# The best time to post on Instagram in 2026, for every day of the week

By PostMesh team. Published 2026-10-26; updated 2026-10-31.

Weekday afternoons are the safest place to start: Sprout Social's 2026 data peaks on Tuesday from 1 to 7 p.m. and Wednesday from 12 to 9 p.m., and Buffer's top slots are Thursday at 9 a.m. and Wednesday at 12 p.m., all in your audience's local time. Later's 2026 study disagrees and favors 3 to 6 a.m., so test two slots for two weeks and keep the one your own Insights favor.

Four companies published large Instagram timing studies in 2026: Sprout Social, Buffer, Hootsuite and Later. Each one studied posts from its own customers, measured engagement its own way and came back with a different answer. This guide puts their numbers side by side for every day of the week, shows where they agree and where they flatly contradict each other, and then walks through the part the studies can't do for you: converting their times to your audience's time zone and finding your own best slot in Instagram Insights.

## The short answer

If you have no data of your own yet, post on a weekday afternoon in your followers' local time. Wednesday is the strongest day in Buffer's study and one of the two peak days in Sprout Social's, and three of the four studies name a time between 12 and 7 p.m. on most weekdays. Saturday is weak in three of the four. After that, stop reading studies and start reading your own numbers: Instagram Insights shows when your followers are most active once you have 100 of them.

**Where should you start?**
- No data yet, followers mostly in one time zone → Wednesday at 12 p.m. or Thursday at 9 a.m. their time. Both sit inside the 2026 peaks of at least two studies.
- 100 or more followers on a public account → Open Insights, note when followers are most active, and test that against one study slot.
- Followers spread across time zones → Pick a time that lands on a weekday afternoon in your two biggest regions, then test it.
- You mostly post Reels → Test an evening slot from Buffer against a midnight slot from Later's Reels data.

## What do the 2026 Instagram studies say?

All four studies use data from their own customers, so each reflects the kind of accounts that use that tool. All four also convert times to the audience's local time, which matters for the time zone section below. Here is what each one measured and what it found.

### Sprout Social, March 2026

[Sprout Social's 2026 analysis](https://sproutsocial.com/insights/best-times-to-post-on-instagram/), published March 31, 2026, covers nearly 2 billion engagements across about 307,000 social profiles from more than 30,000 customers, collected between November 27, 2025 and February 27, 2026. The data spans six networks, of which Instagram is one, and every time is in local time. Its overall best windows are Monday 2 to 4 p.m., Tuesday 1 to 7 p.m., Wednesday 12 to 9 p.m. and Thursday 12 to 2 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday have the highest peaks. It found no significant peak hours on Friday and calls weekends the lowest-engagement days overall and in almost every industry it studied.

### Buffer, September 2026

[Buffer's study](https://buffer.com/resources/when-is-the-best-time-to-post-on-instagram/), updated September 2026, looked at 9.6 million Instagram posts sent through Buffer between January 2024 and December 2025, part of a 52 million post study across 10 networks. It ranks each hour by median engagement rate, which Buffer defines as likes, comments, shares and saves divided by followers, times 100. The three best slots of the week are Thursday at 9 a.m., Wednesday at 12 p.m. and Wednesday at 6 p.m. Wednesday is the best day, followed by Thursday and Tuesday, and Friday and Saturday are the weakest. Buffer also notes that the 6 to 11 p.m. block does best on every weekday except Thursday.

### Hootsuite, July 2026

[Hootsuite's guide](https://blog.hootsuite.com/best-time-to-post-on-instagram/), dated July 14, 2026, draws on what it calls Hootsuite's 2025 social media analysis: more than 1 million posts studied with the data science firm Critical Truth, with times localized across the 118 countries in the sample. By day, it lists Monday 3 to 9 p.m., Tuesday 5 to 8 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m., Wednesday 5 p.m., Thursday 4 to 5 p.m., Friday around 4 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. and around 5 p.m., and Sunday 12 to 3 p.m. Its FAQ names Monday, Tuesday and Thursday as the best days for reach, and early mornings before 8 a.m. and nights after 10 p.m. as the least effective times.

### Later, April 2026

[Later's 2026 guide](https://later.com/blog/best-time-to-post-on-instagram/), published April 21, 2026, analyzed more than 6 million feed posts (images, videos, carousels and Reels) from January to October 2024, plus a separate set of more than 975,000 Reels. Times are adjusted to each audience's local time. It found the best overall time is 5 a.m., the best day is Monday, and Saturday is the worst day. Its worst single slots are Thursday at 3 a.m. and Saturday at 11 p.m. Later is the outlier: where the other three point to afternoons and evenings, its data favors the hours before most people wake up.

**Afternoon camp**
- Sprout Social and Hootsuite
- Peaks between 12 and 9 p.m.
- Weekends weak (Sprout)
- Good first test for most accounts

**Mixed**
- Buffer
- Thursday mornings, Wednesday noon
- Evenings strongest on other weekdays
- Friday and Saturday weakest

**Early-morning camp**
- Later
- 5 a.m. best overall
- 3 to 6 a.m. above average most days
- Saturday weakest

*Where the four 2026 studies land. All times are the audience's local time.*

## What is the best time to post on Instagram each day?

Below, each day lists what every study says, where they agree and where they don't. Times are your followers' local time. Buffer lists three times per day in order, best first, and labels each day's overall engagement; the others give windows.

### Best time to post on Instagram on Monday

Sprout Social says 2 to 4 p.m. Hootsuite says 3 to 9 p.m. and advises against posting after 10 p.m. Buffer's best Monday times are 7 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., and it rates Monday as moderate overall. Later says 5 a.m., and calls 11 p.m. strong too, and it names Monday the best day of the week, with posts between 12 and 6 a.m. getting the highest average engagement.

Three of four studies agree on late afternoon into evening. The 3 to 4 p.m. hour sits inside both Sprout Social's and Hootsuite's windows, and 6 to 8 p.m. is inside both Hootsuite's and Buffer's. Later disagrees completely. A fair Monday test is 3 p.m. against 7 p.m.

### Best time to post on Instagram on Tuesday

Sprout Social says 1 to 7 p.m., one of its two peak days. Buffer's best Tuesday times are 7 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., and it rates Tuesday high. Hootsuite lists two windows, 5 to 8 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m. Later says 5 a.m.

This is one of the best-agreed days: 3 to 7 p.m. is named by Sprout Social, Buffer and Hootsuite. The odd part is Hootsuite's own morning window. Its FAQ calls the hours before 8 a.m. among the least effective, yet its Tuesday list starts at 5 a.m. If you want a morning test, Tuesday is where two studies (Hootsuite and Later) both point early.

### Best time to post on Instagram on Wednesday

Sprout Social's widest window of the week is Wednesday, 12 to 9 p.m., with a further spike at 11 p.m. Buffer calls Wednesday the best day of the week, with 12 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. its best times, and two of Buffer's three top slots for the whole week fall on Wednesday. Hootsuite says 5 p.m. Later says 3 a.m., with engagement staying strong until 5 a.m.

If you only post once a week, Wednesday is the safest bet. Noon, 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. all fall inside Sprout Social's window and match a time named by Buffer or Hootsuite.

### Best time to post on Instagram on Thursday

Buffer's single best slot of the whole week is Thursday at 9 a.m., followed on Thursday by 8 a.m. and 7 a.m., and Thursday is the one weekday where Buffer finds evenings don't lead. Sprout Social says 12 to 2 p.m. Hootsuite says 4 to 5 p.m. Later says 4 to 5 a.m., and oddly its worst slot of the week is Thursday at 3 a.m., one hour earlier.

Thursday is where the studies disagree most: morning, midday, late afternoon and predawn each have one study behind them. That makes it a good day to test your own audience rather than trust any one number. Try 9 a.m. against 12 p.m.

### Best time to post on Instagram on Friday

Sprout Social found no significant peak hours on Friday and warns against a 3 to 7 a.m. dead zone. Buffer's best Friday times are 10 p.m., 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., and it rates Friday low. Hootsuite says around 4 p.m. Later says 3 to 6 a.m. in the body of its guide and 3 to 5 a.m. in its own summary list.

This is a direct contradiction: Later's best Friday window is exactly the window Sprout Social tells you to avoid. Two studies (Sprout Social and Buffer) rate Friday weak overall, so if you can only post a few times a week, Friday is a reasonable day to skip.

### Best time to post on Instagram on Saturday

Sprout Social says Saturday has the lowest engagement of the week. Buffer rates it low, with 9 p.m., 10 p.m. and 8 p.m. its best Saturday times. Later calls Saturday the worst day, says its best Saturday time is 5 a.m., and names Saturday at 11 p.m. one of its two worst slots of the week. Hootsuite is the only one that sounds positive, with 11 a.m. and around 5 p.m.

Three of four studies agree Saturday is weak. They disagree on the hour: Buffer's best Saturday hours run 8 to 10 p.m., while Later's worst is 11 p.m. If you post on Saturdays anyway, Hootsuite's 11 a.m. is the one slot no other study warns against.

### Best time to post on Instagram on Sunday

Sprout Social calls Sunday one of the worst days to post. Buffer rates it moderate, better than Friday or Saturday, with 9 p.m., 10 p.m. and 8 p.m. its best times. Hootsuite says 12 to 3 p.m. and advises avoiding the hours before 8 a.m. and after 9 p.m. Later lists 12 a.m., 5 a.m. and 11 p.m.

Sunday evening is contested: Buffer's best Sunday slot is 9 p.m., the hour Hootsuite tells you to avoid. Midday Sunday, from Hootsuite, is the least contradicted choice, and Buffer's moderate rating makes Sunday a better bet than Saturday.

## Instagram posting times by day and hour: the full table

The first table lists every study's times for each day. The second sorts the same times into windows of the day, so you can see at a glance which windows have the most support. All times are your audience's local time.

| Day | Sprout Social 2026 | Buffer 2026 | Hootsuite 2026 | Later 2026 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Monday | 2–4 p.m. | 7 p.m., 6 p.m., 8 p.m. (moderate) | 3–9 p.m. | 5 a.m.; 11 p.m. also strong |
| Tuesday | 1–7 p.m. (peak day) | 7 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m. (high) | 5–8 a.m. and 3–7 p.m. | 5 a.m. |
| Wednesday | 12–9 p.m., spike at 11 p.m. (peak day) | 12 p.m., 6 p.m., 8 a.m. (best day) | 5 p.m. | 3 a.m., strong to 5 a.m. |
| Thursday | 12–2 p.m. | 9 a.m., 8 a.m., 7 a.m. (highest) | 4–5 p.m. | 4–5 a.m. |
| Friday | No significant peak; avoid 3–7 a.m. | 10 p.m., 9 p.m., 6 a.m. (low) | Around 4 p.m. | 3–6 a.m. |
| Saturday | Lowest of the week | 9 p.m., 10 p.m., 8 p.m. (low) | 11 a.m. and around 5 p.m. | 5 a.m. (worst day) |
| Sunday | One of the worst days | 9 p.m., 10 p.m., 8 p.m. (moderate) | 12–3 p.m. | 12 a.m., 5 a.m., 11 p.m. |

| Day | 12–6 a.m. | 6 a.m.–12 p.m. | 12–6 p.m. | 6 p.m.–12 a.m. |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Monday | Later | None | Sprout Social, Hootsuite | Buffer, Hootsuite, Later |
| Tuesday | Later, Hootsuite | Hootsuite | Sprout Social, Buffer, Hootsuite | Sprout Social, Buffer, Hootsuite |
| Wednesday | Later | Buffer | Sprout Social, Buffer, Hootsuite | Sprout Social, Buffer |

| Sunday | Later | None | Hootsuite | Buffer, Later |

> A study appears in a window when it names a best time inside it. Tuesday afternoon, Wednesday afternoon, Tuesday evening and Monday evening each have three studies behind them. Thursday evening and Monday and Sunday mornings have none.

## What time zone are these Instagram times in?

This is the question most guides skip, and it changes what you should type into a scheduler.

### Whose time zone the studies use

All four studies report your audience's local time, not a fixed zone such as Eastern or Pacific. Sprout Social says all of its times are listed in local time. Buffer says its times already apply to your time zone. Later says its times are normalized to each audience's local time, so 5 a.m. means 5 a.m. wherever the followers are. Hootsuite says its times were localized across the 118 countries in its sample. So Buffer's Wednesday 12 p.m. means noon where your followers live, which may not be noon where you live.

### How to convert a study time for your audience

1. **Find where your followers are**: Instagram Insights lists your followers' top locations once you have at least 100 followers. Note the biggest one or two.
2. **Pick a target time in their zone**: Choose a slot from the tables above, for example Wednesday at 12 p.m. in New York.
3. **Convert it to your own clock**: Work out the gap between their zone and yours on the date you're posting, not today's gap. Daylight saving can change it.
4. **Schedule it**: Enter the converted time in whatever time zone your scheduler uses. If you're not sure which one that is, check its settings before you rely on it.
5. **Check the result**: After scheduling, look at the time shown on the scheduled post and confirm it matches the slot you meant.

### A worked example: a London account with a New York audience

Say you live in London and most of your followers are in New York. You want to try Buffer's top slot, Thursday at 9 a.m. That's 9 a.m. in New York. For most of the year New York is 5 hours behind London, so you'd schedule for 2 p.m. London time.

But the two countries change their clocks on different dates. In 2026 the UK put its clocks back on October 25, per [GOV.UK](https://www.gov.uk/when-do-the-clocks-change), while the US did so on November 1, per [NIST](https://www.nist.gov/pml/time-and-frequency-division/popular-links/daylight-saving-time-dst). For that one week the gap was 4 hours, so 9 a.m. in New York was 1 p.m. in London. The same thing happens in spring: the US moved its clocks forward on March 8, 2026 and the UK on March 29, leaving a 4 hour gap for three weeks.

| Target slot (New York time) | London, usual 5 hour gap | London, 4 hour gap weeks |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Wednesday 12 p.m. (Buffer) | Wednesday 5 p.m. | Wednesday 4 p.m. |
| Thursday 9 a.m. (Buffer) | Thursday 2 p.m. | Thursday 1 p.m. |
| Tuesday 3 p.m. (Sprout Social, Buffer, Hootsuite) | Tuesday 8 p.m. | Tuesday 7 p.m. |
| Monday 7 p.m. (Buffer, Hootsuite) | Tuesday 12 a.m. | Monday 11 p.m. |

> If you schedule a month ahead, a post set in September for a date in early November crosses those clock changes. Check the gap for the posting date, not the day you schedule.

### What if your followers live in several time zones?

Look for a slot that lands in a good window for your two biggest regions at once. Using the London and New York example, Wednesday at 12 p.m. New York time is 5 p.m. in London. That falls inside Sprout Social's Wednesday 12 to 9 p.m. window in both cities, matches Buffer's top Wednesday slot for New York, and matches Hootsuite's Wednesday 5 p.m. for London. One post, four study matches.

When no single slot works, give the bigger region the better slot, or post twice and see which copy does better. Later suggests posting 2 to 3 times a day if you're targeting several time zones, which is a lot for most accounts. Testing the two candidates over two weeks, as described below, usually settles it.

### Which time zone does Instagram Insights use?

Instagram's help pages describe the most active times chart but don't say which time zone it's drawn in. Read it next to your followers' top locations, and if the peaks look shifted by a few hours from what you'd expect, that's a sign the chart and your audience are in different zones. Treat the chart as a guide to test, not a timetable.

## How do I find my own best time to post on Instagram?

Studies average millions of accounts. Your own Insights describe yours. Instagram's [About Instagram insights](https://www.facebook.com/help/instagram/788388387972460) page says any public account can use insights, and that once you have at least 100 followers, the followers insight shows growth, top locations, age range and the times your followers are most active on Instagram.

### In the Instagram app

1. **Go to your profile**: Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
2. **Open your dashboard**: Tap Professional dashboard if you have a professional account, or Your dashboard for a personal account. If you don't see it, tap More to open Settings and activity, then tap Insights below For professionals.
3. **Open the detail**: The overview shows the past 30 days of views, interactions, new followers and content you shared. Tap an insight to see more detailed metrics.
4. **Set the date range**: Tap the dropdown and choose Last 7 days, Last 14 days, Last 30 days, Previous month or Last 90 days, or a custom range within the past 90 days.
5. **Read your followers' habits**: In the followers insight, look at top locations and the times your followers are most active. Write down the two busiest windows.

1. Tap Profile
2. Tap Professional dashboard (or Your dashboard)
3. Tap an insight for detail
4. Choose a date range up to 90 days
5. Note top locations and most active times

*From Instagram Help. Most active times appear once you have at least 100 followers.*

### On a computer

Instagram's page on [viewing account and content insights](https://help.instagram.com/1533933820244654) says that on instagram.com you select Dashboard from the left-hand menu, then Insights below For professionals (or Your dashboard below Your insights and tools for a personal account). From the Insights dropdown, pick Account or Content, then set the date range to the last 7, 14, 30 or 90 days or a custom range.

### Active times in Meta Business Suite

If you schedule from Meta Business Suite, there's a shortcut. Meta's page on [creating posts on desktop](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/942827662903020) says that under Scheduling options you can click Active times to pick recommended times based on when your followers were most active on Facebook and Instagram over the past seven days. Meta's [Insights overview](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/700570830721044) adds that the Audience tab shows when followers are more active on the platform, alongside age, gender and location.

Meta Business Suite: Account menu, top left › Insights › Audience

*From Meta's Business Help Center. You need permission to view insights for the account.*

Seven days is a short window. A holiday week or one viral post can skew it, so compare it with the 30 or 90 day view in Instagram Insights before you rebuild your schedule around it.

### Why "most active" isn't the same as "best"

The most active times chart shows when your followers are on Instagram. The studies measure something else: how posts published at each hour performed. The hour your followers are busiest isn't automatically the hour your posts do best. That's why the best approach is to treat your busiest hour as one candidate and a study slot as another, then let a test decide.

### Why can't I see when my followers are active?

- Your account is private. Instagram says you need a public account, personal or professional, to view insights, and switching back to private removes access.
- You recently went public. Instagram says you may not be able to view past insights if you recently made your account public.
- You have fewer than 100 followers. Follower trends, including most active times, need at least 100.
- You're looking at demographics for a short range. Instagram says audience demographics need a preset timeframe and more than 100 accounts reached or engaged; try Last 30 days or Last 90 days.

If insights aren't switched on at all, the [guide to turning on Instagram Insights](/blog/how-to-turn-on-instagram-insights) covers the account settings.

## How often should you post on Instagram?

Timing and frequency go together: the more you post, the more slots you need. Here is what the same studies say about how often.

| Source | What it says about frequency |
| --- | --- |
| Buffer, 2026 | 3 to 5 posts a week (Reels, carousels or photos), plus 1 to 2 Stories a day. Buffer cites a separate 2025 study and says its 9.6 million post analysis supports the same range. |
| Sprout Social, 2026 | No set number, but 60% of consumers interact with brand content at least multiple times a week, which Sprout reads as a high tolerance for regular posting. |
| Later, 2026 | Consistency matters more than perfection. Its only number is 2 to 3 posts a day, and only for accounts targeting several time zones. |
| Hootsuite, 2026 | Review your posting schedule once or twice a year, or when something major changes. |

A practical reading: start at three feed posts a week in your three best-supported slots (for most accounts that's Tuesday afternoon, Wednesday noon and Thursday morning or midday), and add Stories on the other days. Only add more feed posts once you can keep up three without strain.

## Is the best time different for Reels, carousels and Stories?

Only one study has format-specific data. Later analyzed more than 975,000 Reels separately and found the best Reels time is 12 a.m., the best day is Monday with high engagement between 12 and 6 a.m., and the worst Reels slot is Wednesday at 2 a.m. It doesn't give Reels times for each day.

Buffer suggests evenings from 6 to 11 p.m. for Reels, with Wednesday and Thursday strongest, and lists Wednesday 12 p.m., Wednesday 6 p.m. and Thursday 9 a.m. for carousels. But Buffer's author says all post types were analyzed together, so these aren't Reels-only or carousel-only findings. For Stories, Buffer recommends posting daily, once or twice, rather than chasing a time slot.

If you post mostly Reels, a useful test is Buffer's 7 p.m. against Later's midnight. Before you test, make sure the Reel itself is right: the [Instagram Reel size guide](/blog/instagram-reel-size) covers dimensions and length, and [post vs Story vs Reel](/blog/instagram-post-vs-story-vs-reel) explains how each format behaves.

## Does the best time to post on Instagram change by industry?

Sprout Social and Hootsuite both break their data down by industry. They use different industry groups and different data, so treat matches as encouraging and gaps as unknowns. All times are local.

| Industry | Sprout Social 2026 | Hootsuite 2026 |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Education | Tuesday and Wednesday at 11 a.m.; weekends worst | Not broken out |
| Financial services | Tuesday to Thursday, early morning and late night; avoid Saturday | Wednesday 11 a.m.–2 p.m., Friday 11 a.m.–4 p.m. |
| Food, dining and hospitality | Weekdays 11 a.m.–1 p.m. (food and beverage) | Wednesday 11 a.m.–3 p.m. (dining, hospitality and tourism) |
| Healthcare | Monday 12–9 p.m., Wednesday 11 a.m.–5 p.m. | Monday 1–3 p.m., Thursday 9 a.m.–12 p.m., Saturday 8–11 a.m. |
| Nonprofit | Tuesday to Thursday 11 a.m.–4 p.m.; avoid Sunday | Wednesday 10 a.m.–1 p.m., Thursday 2–5 p.m. |
| Retail | Weekdays around 12–3 p.m. | Monday 7–11 a.m., Tuesday 5–7 p.m., Thursday 9 a.m., Friday 6–10 a.m. and 5–9 p.m. |
| Government | Tuesday to Thursday, about 1–5 p.m. in its summary | Thursday 12–3 p.m. |
| Software and tech | Weekdays 11 a.m.–3 p.m. | Not broken out |
| Travel | Monday to Wednesday 11 a.m.–4 p.m. | Covered under dining, hospitality and tourism |

Hootsuite also lists construction, mining and manufacturing (Tuesday 3 to 6 p.m., Wednesday 2 to 5 p.m., Thursday 4 to 6 p.m.), marketing agencies (Monday 9 to 11 a.m., Friday 8 to 10 a.m.), media and entertainment (Sunday 1 p.m., Tuesday 7 to 8 a.m., Wednesday 5 p.m., Friday 2 to 4 p.m.) and utilities and energy (Tuesday 2 to 5 p.m., Thursday 1 to 3 p.m.).

## Why is there no single best time to post on Instagram?

Because the four studies aren't measuring the same thing, and none of them is measuring you.

- Different accounts. Each study uses its own customers, so its results reflect the kind of accounts that use that tool. Your followers may keep very different hours.
- Different metrics. Buffer ranks median engagement rate including saves and shares. Later uses engagement rates. Sprout Social counts engagements. A slot can win on one and lose on another.
- Different periods. Later's feed data is from January to October 2024. Buffer's runs from January 2024 to December 2025. Sprout Social's covers late November 2025 to late February 2026, a window that includes the winter holidays.
- Averages hide spread. A global average can produce a best hour that's nobody's real peak. Hootsuite shows this: when it splits its data by time zone, the best Instagram time in Eastern time is Saturday at 11 a.m., in Pacific and Mountain time Saturday at 9 a.m., and in Central European time Monday 7 to 8 p.m. and Thursday 4 to 6 p.m. None of those match its global day-by-day list.
- The studies contradict themselves. Hootsuite's Tuesday window starts at 5 a.m. while its FAQ calls pre-8 a.m. posts among the least effective. Later's Friday window is 3 to 6 a.m. in one place and 3 to 5 a.m. in another.

None of this makes the studies useless. They're good at ruling things out (Saturday is weak in three of four) and at suggesting what to test first. They can't tell you which of two good slots works for your followers. Only a test can.

This plan compares two slots fairly with no special tools. It fits the 3 to 5 posts a week Buffer recommends.

1. **Pick two slots**: Slot A is a time with study support, such as 3 p.m., which three studies name on Tuesday. Slot B is your followers' busiest hour from Insights, for example 9 a.m., or a second study time if you don't have 100 followers yet.
2. **Hold everything else steady**: Use the same format for every test post, all Reels or all photos, with similar topics and caption lengths. Change only the time.
3. **Alternate the slots**: Over 14 days, publish 6 posts: 3 in slot A and 3 in slot B, on alternating days so neither slot gets all the good days.
4. **Record the same numbers each time**: 24 hours after each post, write down views, interactions and accounts reached. Check again at 7 days if you can.
5. **Compare medians, not totals**: Take the middle value for each slot. One breakout post can make a slot look better than it is.
6. **Keep the winner, test a new challenger**: Adopt the better slot, then test it against a new candidate in the next two weeks.

- Day 1: Choose slot A from a study and slot B from your Insights
- Days 2 to 14: Publish 6 posts, alternating A and B, same format
- 24 hours after each post: Log views, interactions and accounts reached
- Day 15: Compare the median of each slot
- Day 16 onward: Keep the winner and test it against a new slot

*A simple test anyone can run with Instagram Insights and a notes app.*

| Post | Date | Slot | Local time | Views at 24 h | Interactions at 24 h |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Tue | A | 3 p.m. | | |
| 2 | Thu | B | 9 a.m. | | |
| 3 | Sat | A | 3 p.m. | | |
| 4 | Mon | B | 9 a.m. | | |
| 5 | Wed | A | 3 p.m. | | |
| 6 | Fri | B | 9 a.m. | | |

To compare posts with different reach, turn interactions into a rate. The [engagement rate guide](/blog/social-media-engagement-rate) explains the formulas, and the free [Instagram engagement rate calculator](/tools/instagram-engagement-rate-calculator) does the math. If you're unsure whether to judge by reach or impressions, the glossary entry on [reach vs impressions](/glossary/reach-vs-impressions) explains the difference.

**Before you trust your test**
- [ ] Both slots got the same number of posts
- [ ] Every test post used the same format
- [ ] You logged results at the same delay after posting
- [ ] You compared medians, not totals or averages
- [ ] No holiday, giveaway or paid boost skewed one slot
- [ ] Times were set in your followers' time zone, not yours

*Six posts is a small sample. Repeat the test before making a big change.*

## How do I post at the right time without being online?

Once you've picked a slot, schedule it. Instagram's own app and Meta Business Suite can both schedule posts; the [guide to scheduling Instagram posts](/blog/how-to-schedule-instagram-posts) covers the steps and limits of each.

If the same photo or Reel also goes to TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn or Facebook, [PostMesh](/platform/instagram) schedules it for each network at the time you choose, up to 30 days ahead. Instagram posts go out through Instagram's API from PostMesh's servers, so your computer doesn't need to be on at the time you pick.

Each network has its own peak hours, so cross-posting at one time rarely suits all of them. The guides to the best time to post on [TikTok](/blog/best-time-to-post-on-tiktok), [Facebook](/blog/best-time-to-post-on-facebook), [LinkedIn](/blog/best-time-to-post-on-linkedin) and [YouTube](/blog/best-time-to-post-on-youtube) give each network's studies, and [how to cross-post to multiple platforms](/blog/how-to-cross-post-to-multiple-platforms) covers adapting one post for each.

## Common mistakes and what to do next

- Using a study time in your own time zone when your followers live elsewhere. Convert first.
- Forgetting daylight saving. Two countries can change their clocks a week or more apart.
- Changing the time and the content at once. If both change, you can't tell which one made the difference.
- Judging a slot on one post. Compare at least three posts per slot, by median.
- Rebuilding your week around a 7-day Active times reading. Check it against 30 or 90 days of Insights.
- Treating timing as the whole answer. The studies only measure when posts went out, not what was in them, so keep working on the posts themselves.

Next step: pick Wednesday at 12 p.m. in your followers' time zone as slot A, take slot B from your Insights, and run the two-week test. Before each post, check the caption fits with the [Instagram caption character counter](/tools/instagram-caption-character-counter) and the photo fits Instagram's shapes with the [Instagram post size guide](/blog/instagram-post-size). Afterward, see [who liked each post](/blog/how-to-see-who-liked-your-instagram-post) to learn which followers respond at which hours.

## Questions

### What is the best time to post on Instagram today?

Look up today in the day-by-day table and use a time named by at least two studies, in your followers' local time. On a weekday that's usually an afternoon slot; on Saturday, Hootsuite's 11 a.m. is the least contested.

### What is the best day to post on Instagram?

Wednesday is the best day in Buffer's 2026 study and one of the two peak days in Sprout Social's. Later's 2026 data picks Monday instead.

### What is the worst time to post on Instagram?

Saturday is the weakest or near-weakest day in Sprout Social's, Buffer's and Later's studies. Sprout Social also warns against 3 to 7 a.m. on Fridays.

### Is it better to post on Instagram in the morning or evening?

The studies split. Buffer finds evenings strongest on every weekday except Thursday, when mornings lead, while Later favors 3 to 6 a.m. and Sprout Social favors afternoons, so test one of each.

### What time should I post on Instagram on a Saturday?

Hootsuite suggests 11 a.m. or around 5 p.m., and Buffer's best Saturday hours are 8 to 10 p.m. Three of four studies rate Saturday weak, so skip it if you only post a few times a week.

### What time should I post on Instagram on a Sunday?

Hootsuite's 12 to 3 p.m. is the least contradicted Sunday window. Buffer's best Sunday slot is 9 p.m., but Hootsuite advises against posting after 9 p.m. on Sundays.

### Are the best times in my time zone or my followers'?

Your followers'. Sprout Social, Buffer, Hootsuite and Later all report times in the audience's local time, so convert them if your followers live in another zone.

### How many followers do I need to see my followers' most active times?

Instagram says follower trends, including the times they're most active, appear once you have at least 100 followers on a public account.

### Is the best time different for Reels?

Later's separate study of more than 975,000 Reels found 12 a.m. best and Monday the best day. Buffer suggests evenings for Reels but analyzed all formats together.

### How often should I post on Instagram?

Buffer recommends 3 to 5 feed posts a week plus 1 to 2 Stories a day. Pick a pace you can keep up for months.

### How long should I test a posting time?

Two weeks with three posts in each of two slots is enough for a first read. Compare the median of each slot and repeat the test before a big change.
