Yes. On instagram.com, click Create, then Post, then Select from computer to share a photo, a carousel of up to 20 photos and videos, or a Reel up to 20 minutes long. Stories can't be posted from instagram.com, so use Meta Business Suite or a scheduler for Stories and for anything you want to go out at a set time.

## The short answer

You can post to Instagram from a desktop or laptop without installing anything. Instagram's Help Center gives computer instructions for single photos, for posts with several photos and videos, and for Reels, all starting from the Create button on the left of instagram.com. What the website doesn't do is Stories: Instagram's help article on sharing to your story says the feature isn't available on computer and lists only the Android, iPhone, iPad and Instagram Lite apps.

So the right tool depends on what you're posting and when. The table shows the four realistic routes side by side. The rest of this guide walks through each one, with the steps, the limits and what to do when something doesn't work.

| What you want to post | instagram.com | Meta Business Suite (desktop) | Scheduler using Instagram's API | PostMesh |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| One photo | Yes: jpg, png or heic/heif | Yes | Yes, JPEG only | Yes, one photo per post |
| Carousel | Yes, up to 20 photos and videos | Yes, up to 10 photos | Yes, up to 20 items | No |
| Reel or video | Yes, up to 20 minutes | Yes, from a video | Yes, 3 seconds to 15 minutes, 300 MB | Yes, 3 seconds to 15 minutes, 300 MB |
| Story | No | Yes, up to 10 photos or videos | Yes, if the tool supports it | No |
| Schedule for later | Not in the computer instructions | Yes | Yes | Yes, up to 30 days ahead |
| Account you need | Your normal login | Professional account in a business portfolio | Professional account | Professional account, no Facebook Page |

**What do you want to post from your computer?**
- A photo, carousel or Reel, right now → Use instagram.com: Create, then Post, then Select from computer.
- A Story → Use Meta Business Suite with a professional account, or a scheduler that supports Stories.
- Anything at a set time later → Use Meta Business Suite or a scheduler. Instagram's own scheduler is described for the app.
- One post for several networks → Use a scheduler that publishes to each network and checks every network's limits first.

*Pick the route by what you're posting, not by habit. Stories are the case instagram.com can't handle.*

## What can you post on Instagram from a computer?

More than most people expect. The computer version of Instagram's help articles covers three kinds of post, and each has most of the options you'd find on your phone.

### Single photos

Instagram's help article on posting a photo says the supported file formats on a computer are jpg, png and heic/heif. HEIC is the format many iPhones save photos in, so you can usually drag a photo straight from your phone's backup folder without converting it. After you choose the file, you pick its size (the crop), then you can apply Filters or Adjustments, write a caption, add a location, write alternative text under Accessibility, and turn off commenting under Advanced settings.

### Carousels

Instagram's help article on posts with multiple photos says you can share up to 20 photos and videos as a single post, which Instagram also calls a carousel. The orientation you choose (square, portrait or horizontal) applies to every item in the carousel, so you can't mix a tall photo and a wide photo at their own shapes. One caption and one location cover the whole post, and you can tag different people in each photo.

Two details catch people out. Videos inside a carousel aren't treated as Reels, so they won't appear in your Reels tab or get Reels features. And likes and comments apply to the whole carousel, not to individual photos.

### Videos and Reels

Instagram's help article on recording a Reel has computer instructions that start the same way as a photo post: Create, then Post, then Select from computer. It says Reels can be up to 20 minutes long, made from one clip or several. On a computer you can pick a cover from the clip or upload a separate cover image, trim the start and end, write a caption, add a location, tag people, add alternative text, and adjust the post's settings.

The same article notes that Reels over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences, and that Reels aren't available to everyone yet: some accounts can see Reels but can't create them. If you don't see the option, that's the likely reason, not your browser.

- 20: Photos and videos in one carousel
- 20 min: Longest Reel you can share
- 1,080 px: Widest photo width Instagram keeps
- 0: Stories you can post from instagram.com

*From Instagram's Help Center articles on carousels, Reels, photo resolution and Stories.*

### What you can't do on instagram.com

| Task | On instagram.com | Where to do it instead |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Share a Story | Not available on computer | The Instagram app, Meta Business Suite, or a scheduler |
| See who viewed your Story | Not available on computer | The Instagram app: open your Story and swipe up |
| Schedule a post | Not in the computer instructions | The Instagram app, Meta Business Suite, or a scheduler |
| Add photos to a carousel after sharing | Not possible anywhere | Delete and repost, or share a new post |

## How do I post a photo on Instagram from my computer?

These steps follow the computer version of Instagram's help article on posting a photo. You'll need to be logged in at instagram.com.

1. **Click Create on the left**: It's in the menu down the left side of instagram.com.
2. **Click Post, then Select from computer**: Choose a jpg, png or heic/heif file, or drag the file into the window.
3. **Choose the size**: Select how the photo is cropped, then click Next in the top right.
4. **Edit if you want**: Click Filters or Adjustments at the top. Click Next when you're done.
5. **Add the details**: Write a caption, add a location, click Accessibility to write alternative text, and open Advanced settings if you want to turn off commenting.
6. **Click Share**: It's in the top right. The post appears on your profile and in your followers' feeds.

instagram.com: Create › Post › Select from computer › Next › Share

*The same five clicks start a photo, a carousel or a Reel on a computer.*

> Alternative text is easy to skip on a phone and easy to add on a computer, where you have a full keyboard. Describe what's in the photo in a sentence. It helps people who use screen readers.

## How do I post a carousel from a computer?

A carousel starts like a single photo, but you select several files in the upload window. Instagram's help article describes it this way for computers.

1. **Click Create, then Post**: Then click Select from computer.
2. **Switch to selecting several files**: Use the multiple-selection option in the upload window, then pick up to 20 photos and videos.
3. **Set the crop**: Click and hold an item, then drag to adjust how it fits the frame. The orientation you pick applies to all items. Click Next.
4. **Put them in order**: Click and hold an item and drag it to a new spot. Remove one with the icon next to it. Click Next.
5. **Apply filters**: Click a filter to apply it to every item, or click one photo or video to edit it on its own.
6. **Add the caption and tags, then Share**: One caption and one location cover the post. Click a photo to tag someone in it.

After you share, you can still reorder the items, remove photos or videos, edit the caption, and change the location and tagged accounts. Instagram's help article says to open the three-dot menu on the carousel and choose Edit. What you can't do is add new photos or videos to a carousel you've already shared. If you forgot one, your options are to delete the post and share it again, or to post the missing photo separately.

> Instagram says posts with several videos can take longer to upload, and recommends a reliable network connection. On a laptop, plug in or stay near your router for big carousels.

If you have one wide image you want to split into swipeable tiles, the free [Instagram carousel splitter](/tools/instagram-carousel-splitter) cuts it into equal pieces you can then upload as a carousel.

## How do I post a Reel or video from a computer?

The computer version of Instagram's Reels help article uses the same Create button. These are its steps.

1. **Click Create, then Post**: Click Select from computer and choose the video. To add another file, click Media in the bottom right, then Add.
2. **Click Next**: You'll see Cover photo and Trim controls on the right.
3. **Choose a cover**: Use the slider under Cover photo to pick a frame, or click Select from computer to upload a cover image.
4. **Trim the clip**: Use the slider under Trim to cut the beginning or end.
5. **Add the details**: Click Next, then write a caption, add a location, tag people, add alternative text and adjust the settings.
6. **Click Share**: If you share the Reel to Explore, it can also appear in the Reels section of your profile.

Prepare the file before you upload, because the cover can't be fixed later. Instagram's help article on Reel sizes recommends a cover of 420 x 654 pixels and says you can't edit the cover after uploading. The same article says Reels can have an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 9:16, should be at least 30 frames per second, and should have a resolution of at least 720 pixels. A 1080 x 1920 vertical MP4 at 30 fps meets all of that. More detail is in our [Instagram Reel size guide](/blog/instagram-reel-size).

If your video is long, keep the 3-minute line in mind. Instagram accepts Reels up to 20 minutes, but says Reels over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences. Our guide to [posting long videos on Instagram](/blog/how-to-post-a-long-video-on-instagram) covers the trade-offs, and if the video started life on YouTube, see [how to post a YouTube video on Instagram](/blog/how-to-post-a-youtube-video-on-instagram) for the rights and download steps.

## Can you post an Instagram Story from a computer?

Not on instagram.com. Instagram's help article on sharing a photo or video to your story shows a message on its computer tab saying the feature isn't available there, and points you to the Android, iPhone, iPad and Lite apps. The help article on seeing who viewed your story says the same. You have three ways around it.

### Option 1: Meta Business Suite

Meta Business Suite on desktop has a Create story button. Its help article says you can upload up to ten photos or videos, edit each one (crop the aspect ratio, trim a video, add text, mentions or stickers), add a link viewers can visit, and either share now or schedule it. You need a professional Instagram account added to a business portfolio, which the next section explains.

### Option 2: a scheduler that publishes Stories

Instagram's Content Publishing API, which schedulers use, supports Stories as well as photos, videos, Reels and carousels. Instagram's API reference gives these Story limits: images in JPEG up to 8 MB, videos from 3 to 60 seconds and up to 100 MB, and a recommended 9:16 shape to avoid cropping or blank space. Whether a given scheduler supports Stories is up to that tool. PostMesh doesn't publish Instagram Stories.

### Option 3: send it to your phone

If you edited a Story graphic on your computer, saving it to your phone and posting from the app is often the fastest route. Instagram's help article says videos up to 60 seconds appear as one Story clip, and longer videos are split into several clips. For how Stories differ from posts and Reels in size, length and reach, see [Instagram post vs Story vs Reel](/blog/instagram-post-vs-story-vs-reel).

## How do I post to Instagram with Meta Business Suite?

Meta Business Suite is Meta's own tool for managing Facebook and Instagram, and its help article says it's free on desktop and in its mobile app. It's the only Meta tool that lets you create Instagram posts, Reels and Stories from a computer and schedule them. It has setup requirements that instagram.com doesn't.

### What you need first

- A business portfolio. Meta's help article says Meta Business Suite needs one: it's a container for your Facebook Page, Instagram account, ad account and the people who can access them.
- An Instagram professional account. Meta's help article on adding an Instagram account says you may be asked to set up a professional account if yours is personal.
- Full control of the business portfolio to add the account, and either full control or content permission on the Instagram account to post.
- An Instagram account that isn't already in another business portfolio. Each Instagram account can only be added to one.

### Add your Instagram account

1. **Open Settings in Meta Business Suite**: Go to the settings for your business portfolio.
2. **Click Instagram accounts**: It's below Accounts in the left menu. Click Add.
3. **Click Add Instagram account**: A window opens where you log in to Instagram yourself. You may be asked about cookies, two-factor codes, or switching to a professional account.
4. **Click Confirm**: A confirmation message appears when the account is added.

### Create and schedule a post

1. **Click Create post**: From the home page or the Content tab.
2. **Choose where it goes**: Under Post to, pick your Instagram profile, your Facebook Page, or both.
3. **Add photos**: Under Media. Meta's help article says the limit for posting to Instagram is ten photos.
4. **Write the text**: Under Post details. You can customize the text separately for Facebook and Instagram.
5. **Pick a time, or post now**: Under Scheduling options, choose a date and time. Active times suggests times based on when your followers were active over the past seven days.
6. **Click Publish, Schedule or Finish later**: Finish later saves it as a draft.

### Create a Reel or a Story

Create reel works like Create post, with a thumbnail choice and per-network captions. Meta's help article lists two Instagram limits: you can't create a Reel from photos if you're posting to Instagram, and the in-tool editing step (audio, aspect ratio, trimming) only applies when posting to Facebook. So edit the video before you upload it. Create story accepts up to ten photos or videos, with crop, trim, text, mentions, stickers and a link.

### Find and change what you scheduled

Click Content in the left menu. Posts and Reels sit under the Posts and reels tab, sorted into Published, Scheduled, Drafts, Expiring and Expired. Stories have their own Stories tab with Active, Scheduled and Archived. From the three-dot menu you can edit, reschedule, move to drafts or delete.

**instagram.com**
- Photos, carousels up to 20, Reels up to 20 minutes
- No Stories
- No scheduling in the computer instructions
- Works with any account you can log in to

**Meta Business Suite**
- Posts up to 10 photos, Reels from video, Stories up to 10 items
- Schedules posts, Reels and Stories
- Needs a professional account in a business portfolio
- Facebook and Instagram only

**A scheduler**
- Posts through Instagram's API or your browser
- Schedules across several networks
- Checks each network's limits before sending
- What it can post varies by tool

*Meta Business Suite covers Stories and scheduling for Instagram and Facebook. A scheduler covers the other networks too.*

## Can you schedule Instagram posts from a computer?

Yes, but not with instagram.com's own tools. Instagram's help article on scheduled posts describes scheduling from the Instagram app, and lists these rules: you need a public account, you can schedule up to 25 posts a day, and you can schedule up to 30 days in advance. Product tagging, collaborative posts, sponsored posts and fundraisers can't be scheduled. In the app, scheduled items are under Profile, then Menu, then Scheduled content, where you can delete, edit, reschedule or share them now.

From a computer, you have two options: Meta Business Suite, covered above, or a third-party scheduler. The table compares them with the in-app scheduler.

| Method | Where you use it | How far ahead | Limits worth knowing |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Instagram's own scheduler | The Instagram app | Up to 30 days | Public account; 25 posts a day; some features not compatible |
| Meta Business Suite | Desktop or its mobile app | Not stated in its help article | Professional account in a business portfolio; Instagram and Facebook only |
| Scheduler using Instagram's API | Desktop browser | Depends on the tool | 100 API-published posts per account in a moving 24-hour period |
| PostMesh | Any desktop browser | Up to 30 days | One photo or one video per Instagram post |

For a full walkthrough of each scheduling method, including the phone app, see [how to schedule Instagram posts](/blog/how-to-schedule-instagram-posts). To pick the time itself, our guide to the [best time to post on Instagram](/blog/best-time-to-post-on-instagram) summarizes the published studies.

## How do schedulers post to Instagram?

Third-party tools reach Instagram in one of two ways, and the difference affects what they can post and what can go wrong.

### Through Instagram's API

Instagram's Content Publishing guide says the API publishes to Instagram professional accounts and supports single images, videos, Reels, carousels and Stories. The guide also lists limits: JPEG is the only image format, shopping tags and filters aren't supported, carousels are limited to 20 items, and accounts are limited to 100 API-published posts in a moving 24-hour period. The carousel section of the same guide mentions a limit of 50 posts in 24 hours, so if you publish many carousels through a tool, plan around the lower number.

### Through PostMesh

PostMesh publishes through Instagram's API. You connect with Instagram Login, a Business or Creator account is enough, and no Facebook Page is needed. PostMesh never sees your password.

Scheduled posts publish from PostMesh's servers, so your computer can be off at the time you pick. PostMesh shows likes and comments for the Instagram posts it sends.

- When you schedule: PostMesh checks the photo or video and caption against Instagram's limits and saves the post for the time you pick, up to 30 days ahead.
- At the scheduled time: PostMesh publishes the post through Instagram's API. Your computer can be off.
- Afterward: Posts shows the result, and Retry resends if Instagram rejected it.

*PostMesh publishes from its servers, not from your computer.*

### What PostMesh can post to Instagram

| Item | What PostMesh does |
| --- | --- |
| Each post | One photo or one video. Instagram needs media, so text-only posts can't be sent. |
| Photos | JPEG, PNG, WebP or GIF up to 40 MB. Instagram gets a JPEG copy sized to fit 4:5 to 1.91:1. |
| Video | MP4 or MOV, 3 seconds to 15 minutes, up to 300 MB. Published as a Reel and shared to your feed. |
| Caption | Up to 2,200 characters and 20 mentions. Instagram's help center now allows 5 hashtags per post. |
| Scheduling | Up to 30 days ahead. |
| Not supported | Text-only posts, carousels, Stories and direct messages. |

Where PostMesh helps is when the same post also goes to Facebook Pages, Threads, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok, X or Reddit, since it checks each network's limits before sending. More detail is on the [Instagram page](/platform/instagram), and plans with a 7-day free trial for new subscribers are on the [pricing page](/pricing).

## Which way should you post from your computer?

Here are four common situations and the route that fits each, using the limits above.

### You're sharing a set of photos tonight

Use instagram.com. A carousel takes up to 20 photos and videos there, against 10 photos in Meta Business Suite, and you can write alt text for each post with a full keyboard. Choose one orientation that suits most of the set, since it applies to every photo.

### You want a Story with a link to go out at 9 a.m. tomorrow

Use Meta Business Suite's Create story with Add link and a scheduled time. instagram.com can't post Stories at all, and the in-app scheduler covers posts and Reels, not Stories.

### You're posting one vertical video to Instagram, TikTok and YouTube on Friday

Use a scheduler. In PostMesh, the limits are 3 seconds to 15 minutes and 300 MB for an Instagram Reel, 3 seconds to 10 minutes (or your account's limit) and 4 GB for TikTok, and up to 3 minutes vertical for a YouTube Short. A 90-second 1080 x 1920 MP4 under 300 MB fits all three. Our guide to [cross-posting to multiple platforms](/blog/how-to-cross-post-to-multiple-platforms) covers adapting the caption for each.

### You manage a brand's Instagram and Facebook Page together

Meta Business Suite is built for this pairing: one post, separate captions for each network, Active times suggestions, and Stories. If the brand is also on LinkedIn, TikTok or YouTube, a scheduler saves you from posting twice.

## What file sizes and formats work best from a computer?

instagram.com and Instagram's API don't accept exactly the same files. If you post by hand, the Help Center numbers apply. If a tool posts for you through the API, the API numbers apply.

| Setting | instagram.com (Help Center) | Instagram API (schedulers) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Photo formats | jpg, png, heic/heif | JPEG only |
| Photo width | Kept between 320 and 1,080 px; larger photos sized down to 1,080, smaller ones enlarged to 320 | 320 to 1,440 px |
| Photo shape | 1.91:1 to 3:4 kept; other shapes cropped | 4:5 to 1.91:1 |
| Photo file size | Not stated | 8 MB |
| Reel shape | 1.91:1 to 9:16 | 0.01:1 to 10:1, 9:16 recommended |
| Reel quality | At least 30 fps and 720 px | 23 to 60 fps, at most 1,920 px wide |
| Reel length | Up to 20 minutes | 3 seconds to 15 minutes |
| Reel file size | Not stated | 300 MB |
| Reel cover | 420 x 654 px recommended | Not covered here |

For photos, Instagram's help article on resolution says that to make sure a photo is shared at 1,080 pixels wide, you should upload one at least 1,080 pixels wide with an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 3:4. The same article puts that as a width of 1,080 pixels with a height between 566 and 1,440 pixels, so anything from 1080 x 566 (wide) through 1080 x 1080 (square) to 1080 x 1440 (tall) is kept as is. The free [Instagram photo resizer](/tools/instagram-photo-resizer) crops a photo to 1080 x 1080, 1080 x 1350, 1080 x 566 or a 1080 x 1920 Story size in your browser, and our [Instagram post size guide](/blog/instagram-post-size) and [social media image sizes guide](/blog/social-media-image-sizes) list every format.

> If a photo looks soft after posting, it's usually been enlarged or cropped. Our guide on [why Instagram Stories look blurry](/blog/why-is-my-instagram-story-blurry) walks through the causes, and most apply to feed posts too.

## Why can't I post on Instagram from my computer?

Most problems come down to a feature that isn't offered on the web, a file Instagram won't take, or an account setting. Work through these in order.

### You can't find a way to post a Story

That's expected. Stories aren't available on instagram.com. Use Meta Business Suite, a scheduler that supports Stories, or the app.

### You can't create a Reel

Instagram's Reels help article says Reels isn't available to everyone yet, and some accounts can see Reels but can't record them. Try the same account in the app. If the app doesn't offer Reels either, it's an account-level limit, not a computer problem.

### The file won't upload

For photos on instagram.com, check the file is jpg, png or heic/heif. If a scheduler rejects the photo, remember the API takes JPEG only. For videos sent through the API, the length must be 3 seconds to 15 minutes and the file 300 MB or less. A 16-minute video can still be posted by hand, since instagram.com accepts Reels up to 20 minutes.

### Your photo was cropped

Instagram crops photos whose shape falls outside 1.91:1 to 3:4 to fit a supported ratio. A tall phone screenshot at 9:19.5 is outside that range, so it gets cut. Crop it yourself first so you choose what's kept.

### Meta Business Suite won't add your Instagram account

Check three things from Meta's help article: the account is a professional account, you have full control of the business portfolio, and the Instagram account isn't already in another business portfolio. If it is, someone with access to that portfolio can give you access, or remove it so you can add it.

### A scheduled post went out late

In PostMesh, scheduled Instagram posts publish from PostMesh's servers within a minute of the time you pick, whether or not your computer is on. If one is late or missing, open Posts: it shows each account's result, and Retry resends to any that failed.

### Something else isn't working

Instagram's help article on technical problems suggests updating first, then reporting the problem with as much detail as you can, such as the device you were using, what you were doing, and a screenshot. It has separate instructions for instagram.com on a computer. If you need a person, see [how to contact Instagram support](/blog/how-to-contact-instagram-support) for the routes that exist.

## What to do next

Once you know which route you're using, a few habits make posting from a computer faster and the results sharper.

**Before you post from a computer**
- [ ] Export photos at least 1,080 px wide, between 1.91:1 and 3:4
- [ ] Export Reels at 1080 x 1920, 30 fps or more
- [ ] Design the Reel cover at 420 x 654 px, because it can't be changed later
- [ ] Keep Reels at 3 minutes or less if you want new viewers
- [ ] Write alternative text while you have a keyboard
- [ ] Check the caption fits 2,200 characters, 5 hashtags and 20 mentions
- [ ] Use Meta Business Suite or a scheduler for Stories

*Each item comes from Instagram's Help Center or from the limits PostMesh checks.*

Check your caption with the free [Instagram caption counter](/tools/instagram-caption-character-counter) before you paste it in. After the post has been up a few days, look at how it did: our guide to [turning on Instagram Insights](/blog/how-to-turn-on-instagram-insights) explains what you can see on a public account, and [how to see who liked your Instagram post](/blog/how-to-see-who-liked-your-instagram-post) covers likes on posts, Reels and comments.
