# Does Instagram notify when you screenshot? Stories, posts and DMs

Instagram's help pages describe screenshot notifications only for messages that disappear: vanish mode and disappearing messages notify the sender if Instagram detects a screenshot, and disappearing photos and videos either report it or block it. For stories, posts, Reels and regular chats, Instagram doesn't document any screenshot notification.

This question gets a lot of confident answers online, many of them based on how Instagram worked years ago. This guide sticks to what Instagram's own help center says as of October 31, 2026, case by case: stories, feed posts, Reels, ordinary chats, disappearing photos and videos, vanish mode and timed disappearing messages. Where Instagram's pages are silent, we say so instead of guessing, because a silence isn't the same as a promise. The second half covers what you can control on your own account if you're worried about other people capturing what you share.

## The short answer

In the help pages we checked, Instagram mentions screenshot alerts in only three places, all inside messages, and all for content that's meant to disappear. Vanish mode and timed disappearing messages tell the other person if Instagram detects a screenshot or screen recording. Disappearing photos and videos sent in a chat are the odd one out: one Instagram page says the sender can see if a screenshot was detected, and a newer one says screenshots of them are now disabled. Everything else, including stories, is undocumented.

**What did you screenshot?**
- A story, post or Reel → Instagram's help pages don't describe any screenshot notification.
- A regular chat message → Not documented. Read receipts may still show you've seen it.
- A disappearing photo or video → Instagram says screenshots are now disabled, or detected ones are shown to the sender.
- Vanish mode or a disappearing message → The sender is notified if Instagram detects the screenshot.

*Based on Instagram Help pages checked on October 31, 2026.*

| Content | Screenshot notification? | What Instagram's help pages say |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Story | Not documented | Story pages cover viewer lists and hiding stories, not screenshots |
| Feed post | Not documented | No mention on the sharing and privacy pages |
| Reel | Not documented | Downloads are a separate, documented setting |
| Regular chat message | Not documented | Read receipts show when a message was seen |
| Disappearing photo or video in a chat | Disabled, or shown if detected | Two pages give different answers |
| Vanish mode message | Yes, if detected | The sender is notified when Instagram detects a screenshot |
| Timed disappearing message | Yes, if detected | Covers screenshots and screen recordings |

## Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a story?

Instagram doesn't document one. Its story help pages explain who can see your story, how long it lasts, how to see who viewed it and how to hide it from people. None of them mentions a screenshot alert in either direction. Instagram's own page on [how to take a screenshot](https://help.instagram.com/1104435079731325) on iPhone, Android, Samsung and iPad explains the button combinations and where the image is saved, and it doesn't mention a notification either. That's as far as the evidence goes: Instagram doesn't say it notifies, and it doesn't promise that it never will.

### What a story's owner can see

What Instagram does document is the viewer list. Its [story viewers page](https://help.instagram.com/202055156863605) says the person who posted can open their story and swipe up to see the number and the usernames of everyone who viewed each photo or video. Only they can see that list. They can still check it for up to 48 hours after posting, through Archive. The view number counts replays, so it can be higher than the number of usernames if someone watched more than once. One exception is spelled out on the same page: the viewer list and view number don't include the usernames of Instagram Plus subscribers who previewed your story. So the list shows most of your audience, not necessarily every person who saw the story.

So while a screenshot isn't documented as visible, your view is. Instagram's page on [who can tell you've seen a story](https://help.instagram.com/539014856306844) is a single sentence: when you see someone's story, they'll be able to tell that you've seen it. Apart from the Instagram Plus preview exception above, which Instagram's pages don't explain further, Instagram documents no way to view a story and stay out of the viewer list, and we won't suggest workarounds for someone else's privacy settings.

- 48 hours: How long you can see who viewed it
- 14 days: How long you can report a vanish mode message after it disappears

### How long a story is available to screenshot

Instagram's [story visibility page](https://help.instagram.com/1729008150678239) says stories disappear from Feed, your profile and Direct after 24 hours, unless you add them to a highlight. Stories are saved to your Stories Archive, which you can turn off in Settings. The same page notes that publicly shared stories, including those in the archive, are used to improve AI at Meta unless you delete them from your archive or make your account private.

### Hiding a story from someone who already viewed it

If you spot someone in your viewer list you'd rather not share with, you can act from the list itself. Instagram's [hide story page](https://help.instagram.com/1177797265575168) says to tap Options to the right of their name, choose Hide your story, then Hide. From then on they won't see anything you add to your story or your live videos. It doesn't undo a view that already happened, and it doesn't hide your profile or posts from them.

### Close Friends stories

A story shared only with Close Friends has a smaller audience, but Instagram's [Close Friends page](https://help.instagram.com/476003390920140) doesn't describe any extra protection against screenshots. It says members see a Close friends label and may see a green ring around your profile photo. Treat a close-friends story as private to the people on the list, and assume any of them could capture it.

## Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a post or Reel?

Not that Instagram documents. Its pages on sharing posts, privacy and Reels don't mention screenshot alerts for feed posts or Reels. What they do describe are the ways people can share or save your content through Instagram itself, and those you can control.

### Reel downloads are a separate setting

Downloading a Reel isn't a screenshot. It's a feature. Instagram's [Reel downloads page](https://help.instagram.com/520831036611383) says that on a public account anyone on Instagram can download your Reels unless you change the setting, and that for users under 18 with public accounts the default is off. On a private account, no one can download your Reels. Downloaded Reels carry an Instagram watermark, your username and audio attribution. Instagram is candid about the limits: copies already downloaded aren't affected if you change the setting later, downloaded Reels aren't allowed to be used for commercial purposes, and Instagram can't control what people do with Reels after they download them.

To turn downloads off for a new Reel, the same page says to tap Next after editing, tap More options, and toggle off Allow people to download your reels, choosing whether that applies to all Reels or only this one.

### Resharing posts and stories

Resharing is the other documented route. On a public account, Instagram's [post sharing page](https://help.instagram.com/620106782759015) says you can stop people reposting your posts and Reels to their story: go to Menu, then below How others can interact with you tap Sharing and reuse, and toggle off Posts and reels to stories. Its [story sharing page](https://help.instagram.com/306110088532606) covers people you mention: under Sharing and reuse, below Allow others to share your content, toggle off Stories in messages. That page adds a detail worth knowing: if you let people reshare your story, their followers can see it, even if your account is private.

Instagram, Sharing and reuse:
- Stories in messages: Let people share your story (tap this)
- Posts and reels to stories: Let people repost to their story

### Notes

Notes are short posts at the top of the inbox and on your profile. Instagram's [notes page](https://help.instagram.com/427590629371317) says they're visible for up to 24 hours, that you can share them with followers you follow back or with your close friends, and that only you can see who liked or replied. It doesn't mention screenshots. It does warn that a location you add to a note can be seen by anyone who can see the note, which is worth remembering before you share one.

## Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a DM?

For ordinary messages, the ones that don't disappear, Instagram's messaging pages don't describe a screenshot notification. Instagram's page on [sending disappearing photos and videos](https://help.instagram.com/1310346208996329) draws the line itself: when you send other message types in Instagram Direct, such as posts from feed, text and hashtags, those messages don't disappear and remain visible in the conversation. Nothing on that page or the other chat pages suggests a screenshot of them is reported.

### What the other person can see instead

Read receipts are the documented signal in a normal chat. Instagram's [read receipts page](https://help.instagram.com/1586876252167004) says they let others in a chat see when you've viewed their message. You can turn them off for one chat, from the chat name, then Privacy & safety, or for all chats from Menu, then Messages and story replies, then Show read receipts. A setting you change in one chat isn't overridden by the all-chats setting. Your activity status is the other signal, and our guide to [turning off active status on Instagram](/blog/how-to-turn-off-active-status-on-instagram) covers it.

### Locking a chat on your own phone

If your worry is someone picking up your phone and capturing a conversation, Instagram's [chat lock page](https://help.instagram.com/1719149968895799) describes a feature for that. Locking a chat moves it to a hidden folder in your inbox and hides its content from notifications and search, and you need your phone's passcode, fingerprint or face to see it. It only locks the chat for you, not for the other people in it.

## Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a disappearing photo?

This is where Instagram's own pages disagree, so here is exactly what each says. Disappearing photos and videos are the ones you send from the camera in a chat. Instagram's sending page says the recipient can't see them again after viewing, unless you've allowed a replay, and you can only send them to people who follow you or have already approved messages from you.

### The three view options

Before you send, Instagram's sending page says you tap the icon in the bottom left and choose one of three options. Instagram's replay page still describes the middle option as allowing a replay.

**View once**
- Recipient can open it one time
- Then it disappears

**View twice**
- Loops the photo or video
- Recipient can open and replay it one more time

**Unlimited views**
- Keeps a preview image in the chat
- Stays visible in the thread

*Option names from Instagram Help's page on sending disappearing photos or videos.*

### What the sender can see

Instagram's sending page says you can't view your disappearing photos or videos after sending them, but you can see if they were seen or if Instagram detects someone took a screenshot. Its [replay page](https://help.instagram.com/640455899468439) says the same from the other side: the sender will be able to tell that you replayed the photo or video or took a screenshot, if detected. You can only replay right after receiving it, and only if the sender allowed it.

### Two pages, two answers

Instagram's newer [disappearing photo status page](https://help.instagram.com/272077316522642) says something different: taking a screenshot is now disabled for a disappearing photo and video you've sent in a chat. The steps on that page show only whether the content was seen: open Messages, open the conversation, and the status appears below what you sent. Read together, the safest reading is that Instagram has moved from reporting screenshots of these photos to blocking them, but its help center hasn't caught up everywhere. Either way, the sender is protected more here than anywhere else on Instagram.

> Instagram's help pages don't say whether the screenshot block applies on every device or app version. If you're sending something sensitive, don't rely on it.

### How to view a disappearing photo you received

Instagram's [viewing page](https://help.instagram.com/1093679830751299) says to open Messages and either tap the blue play button beside the chat name, or open the chat and tap View Photo or Play Video. You can only reply to it while it's playing.

### How to send a disappearing photo or video

If you want the strongest protection Instagram documents for a photo, send it this way rather than from your camera roll as a normal message. These steps are from Instagram's sending page for the iPhone and Android apps.

1. **Open the chat**: Tap Messages at the bottom, then tap a chat or start a new one.
2. **Open the camera**: Tap the camera icon in the bottom left of the chat.
3. **Take or choose the photo or video**: Tap the circle to take a photo, or hold it to record. Or tap the image icon to pick something from your device. You can add text, a drawing or a GIF.
4. **Choose how it can be viewed**: Tap the icon in the bottom left and select View once, View twice or Unlimited views.
5. **Send**: Tap Send in the bottom right. You'll see its status below it in the chat.

1. Open the chat in Messages
2. Tap the camera icon in the bottom left
3. Take or choose a photo or video
4. Pick View once, View twice or Unlimited views
5. Tap Send

*From Instagram Help's page on sending disappearing photos or videos.*

### Why can't I replay a disappearing photo?

Instagram's replay page gives two reasons. You can only replay one right after you've received it, and the sender has to have allowed a replay, which today means choosing View twice. If they chose View once, there's no second look.

## Does vanish mode notify when you screenshot?

Yes, if Instagram detects it. Instagram's [vanish mode page](https://help.instagram.com/888592124998543) describes vanish mode as a way to send messages, photos, videos and other content in a chat that disappears when someone leaves the chat or turns vanish mode off. Its safety section says someone could take a screenshot or screen recording of a message before it disappears, and that you'll receive a notification if Instagram detects they take a screenshot.

Instagram: Messages › Open a chat › Swipe up

*From Instagram Help. Swipe up again to turn vanish mode off.*

### What else vanish mode does

- You can't copy, save or forward disappearing messages.
- You get a notification when someone sends you a vanish mode message, and you're notified if they send a new message outside vanish mode.
- Accounts you haven't connected with before can't send you message requests in vanish mode.
- It only works in a chat with another Instagram account, and certain professional accounts can't receive vanish mode messages.
- Instagram says the feature may be unavailable in Japan and in countries in Europe.

### Can you report a vanish mode message after it's gone?

Yes, for a while. Instagram's [vanish mode reporting page](https://help.instagram.com/3481837395194926) says you can report a message or chat for up to 14 days after the messages disappear, even if you can't see them anymore. Tap and hold a message to report it, or tap the username at the top, then Options, then Report, for the whole chat. Reported messages are decrypted and sent from your device to Instagram for review, and the person you report won't see who reported them. In a group chat, you can't report the whole chat, only individual messages, photos, videos and people. When you report a single message, Instagram also offers to restrict or block the account that sent it.

## What about timed disappearing messages?

Instagram also has a separate disappearing messages feature that's only available in certain locations. Per its [disappearing messages page](https://help.instagram.com/708011878194232), you swipe up in a chat to turn it on, and messages then disappear after a set time. You can tap and hold a message to see how long it has left, or tap Change timer below a message to change the default.

The safety note matches vanish mode: someone could take a screenshot or screen recording before the message disappears, and you'll receive a notification if Instagram detects it. A few more rules from the same page: you can only forward or save disappearing messages that you sent, reactions can change when a message disappears, and the feature doesn't work in group chats or in chats with a Messenger or Facebook account.

## What does "if we detect" mean?

Every Instagram page that mentions a screenshot alert uses the same qualifier: you're notified if Instagram detects it. Instagram doesn't explain how detection works or when it fails, so the honest takeaway is that a notification is likely but not guaranteed. The vanish mode and disappearing messages pages both spell out the gap that no app can close: someone can take a photo of a disappearing message with a camera or another device before it disappears. That's why both pages tell you to use those features only with people you trust.

| Way of capturing | Covered by a notification? |
| --- | --- |
| Screenshot of a vanish mode or disappearing message | Yes, if detected |
| Screen recording of a disappearing message | Yes, if detected, per the disappearing messages page |
| Screenshot of a disappearing photo or video | Now disabled, per Instagram's status page |
| Photo of the screen with another device | No, and Instagram says this is possible |
| Screenshot of a story, post, Reel or regular chat | Not documented |

## Why can't I find vanish mode or View once?

The protected message types have more conditions than ordinary chats. If an option is missing, one of these is usually why.

### You're on a computer

Instagram's pages for sending disappearing photos and for vanish mode only offer instructions for the Android, iPhone and iPad apps. If you're on instagram.com, use the app on your phone instead. The timed disappearing messages page also lists mobile browser help, but it says the feature is only available in certain locations.

### The other person doesn't follow you

Instagram's sending page says you can only send disappearing photos or videos to people who follow you or who have already approved messages from you. For vanish mode and disappearing messages, accounts you haven't connected with before can't send you requests that way.

### It's a group chat or a Facebook contact

Vanish mode works only in a chat with another Instagram account. Timed disappearing messages don't work in group chats or in chats with a Messenger or Facebook account. Disappearing photos and videos can go to a person or a group, per Instagram's sending page.

### Your region or their account type

Instagram says vanish mode may be unavailable in Japan and in countries in Europe, and that timed disappearing messages are only in certain locations. Both pages say certain professional accounts can't receive those messages, so if you're messaging a brand or a creator, the option may simply not be offered for that chat.

## How do I stop people screenshotting what I share?

You can't stop a screenshot of anything that appears on someone's screen, outside the disappearing photos Instagram now blocks. You can control who sees your content in the first place, and that's where your effort pays off.

1. **Choose who can see your account**: A private account limits your posts to approved followers. Our guide to [hiding followers on Instagram](/blog/how-to-hide-followers-on-instagram) explains what a private account does and doesn't hide.
2. **Shrink the audience for personal stories**: Share to Close Friends, or hide your story from specific people under Story, live and location. Instagram's [hide story page](https://help.instagram.com/1177797265575168) says this stops them seeing future stories and live videos but doesn't hide your profile and posts.
3. **Turn off resharing and downloads**: Toggle off Posts and reels to stories and Stories in messages under Sharing and reuse, and turn off Reel downloads if you're public.
4. **Send sensitive photos as View once**: Instagram says screenshots of disappearing photos and videos are now disabled. It's the strongest protection Instagram documents.
5. **Use vanish mode only with people you trust**: You'll be notified of detected screenshots, but not of photos taken with another device.

**Before you share something personal**
- [ ] Is the audience right: public, followers or Close Friends?
- [ ] Is anyone on the list who shouldn't see it?
- [ ] Is resharing off for this kind of post?
- [ ] Are Reel downloads off, if you're public?
- [ ] For a photo in a chat, is it set to View once?
- [ ] Would it be a problem if someone photographed the screen?

*Every control here is an Instagram setting from its help pages.*

## What if someone screenshotted and shared my content?

A screenshot itself isn't something Instagram's pages treat as a violation, but what someone does with it can be. If a screenshot of your messages or photos is being used to bully or harass you, or someone is threatening to share private images, report it. Instagram's [bullying and harassment page](https://help.instagram.com/464473649316860) recommends reporting the chat rather than the account when the problem is in direct messages, because the team that reviews profiles doesn't have access to messages. It then suggests blocking the account, and says blocking now lets you include new and existing accounts the person may have.

- For a vanish mode chat, report within 14 days of the messages disappearing.
- Block the account if you don't want any further contact. Instagram says people aren't notified when you block them.
- Restrict the account if blocking would escalate things. Our guide to [what restrict means on Instagram](/blog/what-does-restrict-mean-on-instagram) explains what the other person can and can't see.
- If you need help beyond the in-app tools, our guide to [contacting Instagram support](/blog/how-to-contact-instagram-support) lists the channels that exist.

## Does it work differently for teens and business accounts?

Instagram's pages don't describe different screenshot rules by account type. A few related differences do apply. Instagram's [Teen Account settings page](https://help.instagram.com/455298907304715) says Teen Accounts only receive messages and group chats from accounts they follow or are connected to by default, with teens under 16 needing a parent's or guardian's approval to change that, and that images detected as containing nudity are blurred in teens' messages by default. The Reel downloads page says public accounts belonging to users under 18 have downloads off by default. On the business side, Instagram's vanish mode and disappearing messages pages both say certain professional accounts can't receive those messages at all.

## What this means for posts you publish or schedule

Anything you post to your feed, a Reel or a public story can be captured by anyone who can see it, and Instagram doesn't document telling you when that happens. The practical rule is to only publish what you'd be comfortable seeing reshared. That's easier to stick to when you write and check posts ahead of time instead of in the moment. You can [schedule Instagram posts](/blog/how-to-schedule-instagram-posts) in the Instagram app, in Meta Business Suite, or with a scheduler like PostMesh, which checks each post against the network's limits before it goes out. PostMesh publishes photos and Reels to Instagram, not stories or messages, and the details are on our [Instagram page](/platform/instagram).
