To block someone on TikTok, open their profile in the app, tap the Share button at the top, tap Block, then tap Block again to confirm. TikTok doesn't notify them, and from then on neither of you can see the other's posts, find the other's profile in search, or send direct messages.

Blocking is the strongest tool TikTok gives you for cutting one person off. It works from four places: a profile, the comments on your own posts, your inbox and your LIVE. Each route behaves a little differently, and one of them, LIVE, tells the person they've been blocked. This guide covers every route from TikTok's own Help Center, then explains what a block does and doesn't stop, how to undo it, and when muting, removing a follower or reporting is the better fit. Every step and menu name here comes from TikTok's Help Center pages as they read on October 31, 2026.

## The short answer

On a profile, tap Share, then Block, then Block again. In the comments on your own post, select the comments, then tap More › Block accounts. In your inbox, swipe or press and hold the chat, then tap Block. During your own LIVE, tap the viewer, then More › Block. Everyone you've blocked is listed under Settings and privacy › Privacy › Blocked accounts.

TikTok: Their profile › Share › Block › Block again to confirm

*The basic block, from TikTok's Help Center page on blocking.*

| Where you are | How to block | Are they told? |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Their profile | Share › Block, then Block again to confirm | No |
| Comments on your post | Manage multiple comments or Filters, select the comments, then More › Block accounts › Block | No |
| Your inbox | iPhone: swipe the chat, tap More, then Block. Android: press and hold the chat, then Block. Confirm with Block | No |
| Inside a chat | More options at the top, then turn on the Block setting | No |
| A message you're reporting | Report, choose a reason, then Report and block | No |
| Your LIVE | Tap their profile or comment, then More › Block | Yes, TikTok tells them |

> TikTok's blocking page says people you block won't be notified. The LIVE moderation pages are the one exception: a viewer blocked from a LIVE is notified and can't watch any of that creator's LIVE videos until they're unblocked.

## How do I block someone on TikTok from their profile?

This is the route most people need, and it works for anyone: someone who follows you, someone you follow, or a stranger who keeps turning up in your comments. TikTok's [blocking page](https://support.tiktok.com/en/using-tiktok/followers-and-following/blocking-the-users) gives these steps:

1. **Open their profile**: In the TikTok app, go to the person's profile.
2. **Tap Share**: Tap the Share button at the top of their profile.
3. **Tap Block**: Tap Block at the bottom of the menu that opens.
4. **Confirm**: Tap Block again to confirm. The block takes effect straight away.

TikTok, Share menu on a profile:
- Report: Report account
- Mute their posts: For friends
- Remove this follower: If they follow you
- Block: At the bottom (tap this)

*Options TikTok's Help Center lists under Share on a profile. Their order and wording in your app may differ.*

The same Share menu holds the gentler options covered later in this guide, which is useful if you open it and change your mind. Report sends the account to TikTok for review, Mute their posts hides their videos from your feeds, and Remove this follower takes them off your follower list without blocking them.

### Can I block someone from a computer?

TikTok's blocking steps are written for the app only, and the page doesn't describe blocking from a web browser. Reporting is different: the report pages give browser steps too. If you mostly watch on a computer, see [how to watch TikTok without the app](/blog/how-to-watch-tiktok-without-the-app) for what the website does, then use your phone or tablet for the block itself.

### What if they've already blocked me?

Then you probably can't reach their profile to block them back. A block works both ways, so neither account can find the other in search. TikTok's Family Pairing page confirms the effect from the other side: if an account has already blocked you, you can't search for it to block it for your teen. The contact is already cut in both directions, so there's nothing more you need to do unless the account is breaking the rules, in which case you can still report content you come across.

## How do I block several people at once on TikTok?

If one video draws a pile-on, you don't need to visit every profile. TikTok lets you block the authors of several comments in one go, from the comments on one of your own posts:

1. **Go to your post**: In the TikTok app, go to one of your posts.
2. **Open the comments**: Tap the Comments button.
3. **Switch to selection mode**: Press and hold a comment, then select Manage multiple comments. Or tap the Filters button at the top.
4. **Select comments**: Select the comments from the accounts you want to block, then tap More at the bottom.
5. **Block the accounts**: Tap Block accounts.
6. **Confirm**: Tap Block to confirm.

1. Open the comments on your post
2. Press and hold a comment, then Manage multiple comments
3. Select the comments to act on
4. Tap More, then Block accounts
5. Tap Block to confirm

*Bulk blocking starts from your own post's comments.*

The same selection mode does two other jobs. TikTok's [comments page](https://support.tiktok.com/en/using-tiktok/messaging-and-notifications/comments) says you can select up to 100 comments to delete, and its [page on reporting comments](https://support.tiktok.com/en/safety-hc/report-a-problem/report-a-comment) says you can select up to 100 to report. The blocking page doesn't state a limit for blocking. A sensible order on a bad thread is to report the comments that break the Community Guidelines, delete what you don't want visible, then block the accounts behind them.

### Filtering instead of blocking a crowd

When the problem is the volume of comments rather than a few people, filters can do more than blocks. TikTok's [Manage comments page](https://www.tiktok.com/support/faq_detail?id=7636676985892739605) lists four filters, all under Profile › Menu › Settings and privacy › Privacy › Comments:

- Filter all comments: hides every comment on your videos until you approve it. TikTok says this isn't available to everyone yet.
- Filter unwanted comments: hides recent comments that may be offensive or spam until you approve them.
- Filter keywords in comments: hides comments containing words you add, until you approve them.
- Creator Care Mode: hides comments that are inappropriate, offensive or contain profanity, plus comments that were previously reported, deleted or disliked, until you approve them.

Filtered comments wait under Review filtered comments in the same menu, where you can approve or delete each one. Unlike a block, none of this touches the commenters' access to your profile.

## How do I block someone in TikTok messages?

Direct messages have their own block option, so you can act from the conversation that bothered you. TikTok's [Manage direct messages page](https://www.tiktok.com/support/faq_detail?id=7543897461052529158) gives these steps:

1. **Open your inbox**: In the TikTok app, tap Inbox at the bottom.
2. **Find the chat**: On an iPhone, swipe the chat and tap More, then tap Block. On Android, press and hold the chat, then tap Block.
3. **Confirm**: Tap Block again to confirm.

You can also open the chat, tap the More options button at the top and turn the Block setting on. TikTok labels the chat as blocked. Either way, the block is the same account-wide block as the profile route: the person can't message you or view your videos.

### Reporting and blocking in one step

If a message breaks the rules, report it and block at the same time. TikTok's [page on reporting a direct message](https://support.tiktok.com/en/safety-hc/report-a-problem/report-a-direct-message) says to tap Inbox, open the chat, then either press and hold a single message or tap More options at the top to report the whole chat. Tap Report, select a reason, then tap Report and block (or just Report), then Done.

### Message requests and filtered messages

People who aren't your friends (followers you follow back) or accounts you follow usually reach you through message requests. Under Inbox › Message requests you can accept, delete or report each one, and TikTok notes that accounts you've blocked can't send you message requests. With Safe mode on, which is the default, some requests land in Filtered requests instead. Open one and tap Tap here to report the message or block the sender.

### Stopping messages without blocking anyone

If you'd rather not hear from strangers at all, change who can message you instead of blocking people one by one. Go to Profile › Menu › Settings and privacy › Privacy › Direct messages. For Potential connections (your followers) and Others on TikTok, choose Requests to receive their messages as requests, or Don't receive to block them from messaging you. Three details from TikTok's pages matter here:

- Choosing Don't receive doesn't close existing chats. You can still send and receive messages in them unless you block the person.
- With a private account, accounts you follow can't message you until they follow you, and potential connections and others can't send requests unless they follow you.
- Direct messaging is only available to people aged 16 and older, and message requests are set to Don't receive by default for anyone under 18.

You can also mute a single chat (swipe or press and hold it, then Mute) or turn on Mute calls from a chat's More options menu if voice calls are the problem. If you're new to the term, our [glossary entry on DMs](/glossary/dm) explains how direct messages differ from comments.

## How do I block someone during a TikTok LIVE?

If you're hosting a LIVE, or moderating one for another creator, you can block a viewer without stopping the stream. TikTok's [LIVE moderation page](https://support.tiktok.com/en/live-gifts-wallet/tiktok-live/moderating-on-tiktok-live) says creators and moderators can block messages and report, mute, limit or block viewers. Going LIVE requires being 18 or older and having 1,000 followers, and TikTok says the follower number may vary by region. If you're working toward LIVE for Gifts, [how to make money on TikTok](/blog/how-to-make-money-on-tiktok) covers those requirements.

1. **Tap the viewer**: During the LIVE, tap the viewer's profile in the chat, then tap the More button. You can also tap their comment.
2. **Choose Block**: Tap Block. The viewer is removed from your LIVE.

This block reaches further than the stream. TikTok says it also stops the viewer from interacting with you through your posts, profile or direct messages, and they can't watch any of your LIVE videos unless you unblock them. Unlike every other route, the viewer is notified that they've been blocked.

### On a computer

During a LIVE on the web, click the viewer's profile in the chat and then the More button, or click their comment, and choose Block. TikTok notes that moderators don't need LIVE Studio or OBS Studio to moderate from a web browser. Creators going LIVE from a computer do need one of them.

### Seeing who's blocked from your LIVE

In the app, tap More at the bottom of your LIVE, then Settings, then Blocked accounts. On the web, click the Settings button in the LIVE chat panel, then Moderation settings, then Blocked accounts. From there you can review the list and unblock anyone. Moderators you've added can help manage blocked account lists, but only with the permissions you give them.

### Lighter tools for a LIVE

A block is permanent until you undo it. For a viewer who's just being annoying, TikTok's [LIVE comments page](https://support.tiktok.com/en/live-gifts-wallet/tiktok-live/comments-on-tiktok-live) offers softer options:

| Tool | What it does | Is the viewer told? |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Mute | Stops their comments for a time you choose or the whole LIVE | Yes |
| Mute rules | Automatically mutes viewers who comment an exact keyword you add. Set them each LIVE | Not stated |
| Blocked keywords | Hides comments with up to 500 keywords or phrases, 30 characters each, and similar versions by default | Not stated |
| Filter comments | Hides spam, potentially unkind and community-flagged comments. Spam and unkind filters are on by default | Not stated |
| Report | Sends the comment to TikTok for review | TikTok doesn't share your identity |
| Block | Removes them from all your LIVEs and blocks posts, profile and messages | Yes |

### If you're the viewer

TikTok's LIVE pages describe blocking from the host's and moderator's side. If you're watching and want to block the host, use the profile steps above. To flag the stream itself, TikTok's [page on reporting a LIVE](https://support.tiktok.com/en/safety-hc/report-a-problem/report-a-live-video) says to tap Share, tap Report, select a reason and submit.

## What happens when you block someone on TikTok?

TikTok's blocking page sums it up: you can't view each other's posts, find each other's profiles in search, or exchange direct messages. Its comments page adds that a blocked person can't view your videos or engage with you through direct messages, comments, follows or likes. The block is mutual, so you lose access to their content too.

**Neither of you can**
- See the other's posts
- Find the other's profile in search
- Send the other direct messages
- Send the other a message request

**They also can't**
- Comment on your videos
- Follow you
- Like your videos

**You may still cross paths in**
- Multi-host LIVEs
- Duets other people post
- Group chats you share

*From TikTok's blocking, comments and direct message pages.*

### Does TikTok tell someone you blocked them?

No. TikTok says people you've blocked won't be notified, and Family Pairing blocks work the same way. The exception is a block during a LIVE, where TikTok tells the viewer. TikTok's pages don't describe what your profile looks like from the blocked person's side, so we won't guess at it here.

### Do they stay in your followers?

TikTok says any prior connection with the person is removed when you block them, and its comments page says a blocked person can't follow you. Put together, a block ends any follow between you and keeps it from coming back while the block is in place.

### Why can I still see someone I blocked?

TikTok lists three places a blocked person can still appear: multi-host LIVEs, Duets posted by other people, and group chats you share. The Family Pairing page adds the reuse of content by others. None of these mean the block failed. They're spaces where a third person brought you both together. If someone uses those spaces to keep harassing you, report the content.

### Does a block cover their other accounts?

TikTok's pages describe blocking one account at a time, and nothing says a block carries over to other accounts the same person runs. If someone keeps making new accounts to reach you, block each one and report them. TikTok's account reporting covers accounts that create an unsafe environment or impersonate someone.

### Will they know I reported them?

TikTok's [reporting page](https://www.tiktok.com/support/faq_detail?id=7581820702655978040) says it won't disclose your identity to the person you report, though it may share information where the law requires it or where it's needed to review, investigate or respond to your report.

## How do I unblock someone on TikTok?

Unblocking mirrors blocking. From TikTok's blocking page:

1. **Go to their profile**: In the TikTok app, go to the person's profile.
2. **Tap Share**: Tap the Share button at the top.
3. **Tap Unblock**: Tap Unblock at the bottom to confirm.

### Where is my blocked list on TikTok?

Because a blocked account doesn't show up in search, the blocked list is where to look for someone you've blocked. TikTok's [blocked list page](https://support.tiktok.com/en/using-tiktok/followers-and-following/where-to-find-my-block-list) gives this path:

TikTok: Profile › Menu › Settings and privacy › Privacy › Blocked accounts

*You may need to scroll down to find Blocked accounts.*

### What changes after you unblock

Unblocking lets the two of you see each other's posts, find each other in search and message again, subject to your normal privacy settings. TikTok doesn't say unblocking restores a connection the block removed, so check whether you still follow each other and follow again if you want to. TikTok's pages also don't say whether the person is told about an unblock.

### Unblocking someone from your LIVE

Viewers you blocked during a LIVE can be unblocked from your LIVE settings: More › Settings › Blocked accounts in the app, or Settings › Moderation settings › Blocked accounts on the web.

## Should you block, mute, remove a follower or restrict?

A block is often more than you need. If you just want someone out of your feed, or out of your follower count, TikTok has quieter tools. Here's how they compare, based on TikTok's pages for [muting](https://support.tiktok.com/en/using-tiktok/followers-and-following/muting), [removing followers](https://support.tiktok.com/en/using-tiktok/followers-and-following/removing-followers) and [private accounts](https://www.tiktok.com/support/faq_detail?id=7543538137926998533):

| Option | What it does | Are they told? | Can they still see your posts? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Block | Cuts posts, profile search and messages both ways, and removes any connection | No, except on LIVE | No |
| Mute their posts | Hides their posts from your feeds unless you visit their profile | No | Yes |
| Mute a chat | Stops inbox notifications from that chat | Not stated | Yes |
| Mute notifications | Stops push alerts when they post or go LIVE | Not stated | Yes |
| Remove follower | Takes them off your follower list | Not stated | Yes, if your account is public |
| Private account | Only people you approve can follow you and see your content | Not applicable | Only if you approve them |

**What do you want to stop?**
- Seeing their videos in my feeds → Mute their posts. They aren't told and can still watch yours.
- Them seeing my videos or messaging me → Block them from their profile, a chat, your comments or your LIVE.
- Them sitting in my follower list → Remove the follower, and go private if you want to approve new followers.
- Rude comments from many accounts → Turn on comment filters or limit comments to Friends.

*Pick the lightest tool that solves the problem.*

### How to mute someone on TikTok

To mute a friend's posts, go to their profile, tap Share, then Mute their posts. For anyone else, go to one of their posts, press and hold it or tap Share, tap Not interested, then tap Creator and Submit. Muted people aren't notified and still see your posts. After you report content, you can also turn on Mute content from that person on the confirmation screen. To undo a mute, go to Profile › Menu › Settings and privacy › Content preferences › Muted accounts and tap Undo next to the name.

### How to remove a follower

Tap Profile, then Followers, then the More actions button next to the person, and choose Remove this follower. You can also do it from their profile: tap Share, then Remove this follower. TikTok's page doesn't say whether the person is told or whether they can follow you again. If your account is public, assume they can, since anyone can follow a public account. A private account is the way to make every new follower ask first. If you want to keep your follower list itself out of view on Instagram, see [how to hide followers on Instagram](/blog/how-to-hide-followers-on-instagram); on TikTok, a private account limits who sees your followers and following lists.

### Does TikTok have a Restrict option like Instagram?

Not as a per-person setting. TikTok's Help Center doesn't describe a feature like Instagram's Restrict, where you quietly limit one person's interactions without blocking them ([what Restrict means on Instagram](/blog/what-does-restrict-mean-on-instagram) explains that one). The LIVE moderation page mentions limiting viewers but doesn't explain how that works. The nearest tools on TikTok are:

- Allow comments from: choose Everyone (public accounts), Followers (private accounts) or Friends, under Settings and privacy › Privacy › Comments.
- Comment filters and Creator Care Mode, which hide matching comments until you approve them.
- Direct message settings, which let you send strangers to requests or refuse their messages.
- Muting a viewer on LIVE, which stops their comments for a set time.

Don't confuse any of these with Restricted Mode. TikTok's [user safety page](https://support.tiktok.com/en/safety-hc/account-and-user-safety/user-safety) describes Restricted Mode as a filter on what you see: it limits content with mature or complex themes and turns off the Following feed, going LIVE and gifting on LIVE. It doesn't do anything to another person's access to you.

## How do I report someone on TikTok?

Blocking protects you. Reporting asks TikTok to check whether someone broke the Community Guidelines, which can lead to action that protects other people too. You can do both, in either order. Here's where each report option lives, from TikTok's reporting pages:

| What to report | How |
| --- | --- |
| An account (app) | Their profile › Share › Report › Report account, choose a reason, Submit |
| An account (web) | Their profile › More options › Report › Report account, choose a reason, Submit |
| A post | Tap Share or press and hold the post, Report, choose a reason, Submit |
| A comment | Press and hold the comment, Report, choose a reason, Submit |
| Comments in bulk | Manage multiple comments or Filters, select up to 100, More › Report comments › Report |
| A direct message | Inbox › the chat, press and hold a message or tap More options, Report, choose a reason, Report and block or Report |
| A LIVE | In the LIVE, Share › Report, choose a reason, Submit |
| Impersonation | TikTok's online forms, one for accounts in the US and one for accounts elsewhere |
| Bullying of someone under 18 | TikTok's dedicated cyberbullying webform |

TikTok's [account reporting page](https://support.tiktok.com/en/safety-hc/report-a-problem/report-a-user) gives examples of violations: impersonating another account, creating an unsafe environment, and posting sensitive and mature themes. Its [bullying page](https://support.tiktok.com/en/safety-hc/report-a-problem/report-cyberbullying) says the under-18 webform lets TikTok collect more details and send you updates by SMS or email. For problems that don't fit these categories, go to Profile › Menu › Settings and privacy › Help Center, or use TikTok's online reporting form.

## Why can't I block someone on TikTok?

When the block option seems missing, it's usually one of these:

| What's happening | Why | What to try |
| --- | --- | --- |
| You can't find their profile in search | A block hides profiles in both directions, so either they blocked you or you blocked them earlier | Check your Blocked accounts list first |
| You're on a computer | TikTok's blocking steps are for the app | Use the TikTok app on your phone or tablet |
| No bulk block option | Bulk blocking starts from comments on your own post | Press and hold a comment for Manage multiple comments, or tap Filters |
| No Block option for a LIVE viewer | Only the creator, and moderators with permission, can manage viewers | Ask the creator to give you moderator permissions |
| You can't find an account to block for your teen | Family Pairing can't search accounts that have blocked you | Report the account if it's a problem |
| They keep coming back on new accounts | Each block covers one account | Block each new account and report it |

## Can parents block accounts for a teen?

Yes, through Family Pairing, where it's available. TikTok's [Family Pairing page](https://www.tiktok.com/support/faq_detail?id=7543604781667867142) says a linked parent or guardian can block accounts they don't want their teen to interact with and view the teen's blocked list. The effect matches a normal block: the blocked account and the teen can't view each other's posts or send each other direct messages, and the blocked account can't find the teen's profile in search. A few rules from that page:

- The blocked person isn't notified.
- The teen can ask the parent to unblock an account, and can still manage and unblock accounts they blocked themselves.
- If someone has already blocked the parent, the parent can't search for that account to block it for the teen.
- As with any block, the teen may still meet the person in multi-host LIVEs, shared group chats or content others reuse.
- The feature isn't available everywhere.

Family Pairing also lets parents see their teen's following and follower lists, decide whether the account is private, and choose whether the teen's account can be recommended to others.

## How to stop unwanted contact before you need to block

Most of the situations that end in a block start with a setting that was more open than you wanted. Going through these once takes a few minutes:

**TikTok privacy settings worth checking**
- [ ] Allow comments from Everyone, Followers or Friends
- [ ] Turn on Filter unwanted comments
- [ ] Add words under Filter keywords in comments
- [ ] Try Creator Care Mode
- [ ] Set message requests to Requests or Don't receive
- [ ] Keep Safe mode on for direct messages
- [ ] Go private if you want to approve followers
- [ ] Check Profile view history and Activity Status

*All of these live under Profile › Menu › Settings and privacy › Privacy.*

A private account changes the most. TikTok's private account page says only people you approve can follow you and view your content, and others can't Duet, Stitch, download your posts or add them to their Stories. Your name, username and profile photo stay visible to everyone, and people can still search for your account. To switch, go to Profile › Menu › Settings and privacy › Privacy and turn Private account on. On other networks the same idea applies: see [how to make Facebook private](/blog/how-to-make-facebook-private) or [how to make your X account public](/blog/how-to-make-your-x-account-public), which also covers protecting it.

Two settings decide what other people learn about your activity. Activity Status, which is off by default and only available to people 18 and older, shows mutual followers when you're online. Profile view history, also off by default, shows other people with the setting on when you've visited their profile. [How to see who viewed your TikTok](/blog/how-to-see-who-viewed-your-tiktok) explains both, and Instagram's version is covered in [how to turn off active status on Instagram](/blog/how-to-turn-off-active-status-on-instagram).

### Comment settings on a single post

You don't have to change your whole account to protect one video. Before posting, tap More options on the Post screen and turn Allow comments off. For a post that's already up, go to it, tap More options, then Privacy settings, and turn Allow comments off. If you schedule your TikToks, the same per-post choice still applies: [PostMesh](/platform/tiktok) asks who can watch and whether comments, Duet and Stitch are on for every TikTok post it publishes, so a video you expect to draw trouble can go out with comments off from the start. The [TikTok scheduling guide](/blog/how-to-schedule-tiktok-videos) covers the rest of that setup.

### If the trouble is about your reach, not a person

Sometimes the urge to block comes from frustration with how a video is doing. Blocking won't change that. If your views have dropped, [why is my TikTok not getting views](/blog/why-is-my-tiktok-not-getting-views) works through the causes TikTok documents, and [the best time to post on TikTok](/blog/best-time-to-post-on-tiktok) covers timing.

## Questions

### Does TikTok notify someone when you block them?

No. TikTok says people you block aren't notified. The exception is a block during a LIVE, where the viewer is told they've been blocked.

### Can someone I blocked still see my TikTok profile?

They can't find your profile in search or view your posts, and they can't message, follow, comment on or like your videos. You can't see theirs either.

### Where do I find the people I've blocked on TikTok?

Go to Profile, tap the Menu button, then Settings and privacy › Privacy › Blocked accounts. You may need to scroll to find it.

### Does blocking someone on TikTok remove them as a follower?

TikTok says any prior connection with the person is removed when you block them, and a blocked person can't follow you.

### Can I block someone on TikTok from my computer?

TikTok's Help Center only gives blocking steps for the app. Use the TikTok app on a phone or tablet, or block a viewer during a LIVE on the web.

### Can I block lots of accounts at once?

Yes, from the comments on your own post. Press and hold a comment, choose Manage multiple comments, select the comments, then tap More › Block accounts.

### What's the difference between blocking and muting on TikTok?

Muting someone's posts only hides them from your feeds, and they can still see your posts. Blocking cuts posts, profile search and messages in both directions.

### If I unblock someone, do we follow each other again?

TikTok doesn't say unblocking restores a connection the block removed. Check after unblocking and follow again if you want to.

### Can a parent block accounts on a teen's TikTok?

Yes, with Family Pairing where it's available. The parent can block accounts and view the teen's blocked list, and the blocked person isn't notified.

### Is reporting someone on TikTok anonymous?

TikTok says it won't disclose your identity to the person you report, except where the law requires it or it's needed to handle the report.
