To change your name on Facebook, open Settings and privacy, then Settings, then Accounts Center, choose Profiles, pick your profile and select Name. Type the new name, choose Review change, then Save changes. After that you can't change it again for 60 days.

Changing your name on Facebook takes about a minute once you know where the setting lives. The trouble is that it moved. Name changes now happen in Accounts Center, the settings area Meta shares across Facebook and Instagram, so older instructions may not match the menus you see. This guide follows Facebook's own Help Center pages, opened in October 2026, and covers the app and the website, the rules your new name has to follow, how often you can change it, the ID Facebook may ask for, nicknames and other names, Page names, and what to do when the change won't go through.

## The short answer

Your profile name lives in Accounts Center. The route is the same on a computer and in the app: Settings and privacy, Settings, Accounts Center, Profiles, your profile, Name. Facebook checks the new name against its name standards, and once you save it, the 60-day clock starts. A Page name is separate and goes through its own approval flow. Use this table to find the part of the guide you need.

| What you want to do | Where it happens | The catch |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Change your first or last name | Accounts Center, then Profiles, then Name | Only once every 60 days |
| Add a nickname, maiden name or professional name | Your profile's About tab, then Names | It shows in search even if you don't put it at the top of your profile |
| Use a single name with no surname | The Changing your name contact form | Enter the same name in both name fields |
| Add your name in another language's script | Accounts Center, Name, then Manage other names | Only available in some languages |
| Rename a Facebook Page | The Page's settings, then Page setup, then Name | Needs Facebook access to the Page and goes for approval |
| Change the web address of your profile | Accounts Center, then Profiles, then Username | A separate setting from your name |

**Which name are you trying to change?**
- The name on my personal profile → Go to Accounts Center, then Profiles, then Name. Check the name rules first, because you can't change it again for 60 days.
- I want to keep my name and add a nickname → Add it as another name from your profile's About tab. Your main name stays the same and the 60-day limit doesn't come into it.
- The name of a Page I manage → Switch into the Page, open its settings, then Page setup and Name. The request goes to Facebook for approval.
- The option is missing or the change was rejected → Check the 60-day limit and the name standards, then see the troubleshooting section below.

*Your profile name, other names and Page names are three different settings.*

## How do I change my name on Facebook on a computer?

Facebook's [name change help page](https://www.facebook.com/help/173909489329079) gives these steps for a web browser on a computer. Read the name standards section below before you start, because Facebook's page asks you to review them first and a rejected name still costs you time.

1. **Open the menu**: Click your profile picture in the top right of Facebook.
2. **Open Settings**: Select Settings and privacy, then click Settings.
3. **Open Accounts Center**: Click Accounts Center.
4. **Pick your profile**: Click Profiles, then click the Facebook profile you want to rename.
5. **Edit the name**: Click Name, then type your new first, middle or last name.
6. **Review it**: Click Review change and check how the name will appear.
7. **Save**: Click Save changes.

Facebook on a computer: Profile picture › Settings and privacy › Settings › Accounts Center › Profiles › Name

*After Profiles, choose the Facebook profile you want to rename before you click Name.*

> Meta is gradually moving people to Meta Accounts, so Facebook says you may see Meta Account settings instead of Accounts Center. In UK English the menu reads Accounts Centre. The steps inside are the same.

### What the Review change screen is for

Review change is your chance to catch a typo before the 60-day limit applies. Check the spelling, the order of first and last name, and capital letters. If you share a Facebook and Instagram account in the same Accounts Center, the name page also notes that matching first and last names across both can help people find you through suggestions.

### If you have more than one profile

Accounts Center lists every profile connected to it, including an Instagram account if you've added one. The Profiles step is where you pick which one to rename, so check the profile picture and username before you click Name. Renaming one profile doesn't rename the others unless you've chosen to sync your profile information, which is covered later in this guide.

## How do I change my name in the Facebook app?

In the Facebook app for iPhone and Android, the route starts from the Menu tab rather than your profile picture. The rest matches the computer steps, according to the app version of Facebook's help page.

1. **Open Menu**: Tap Menu in the Facebook app.
2. **Open Settings**: Scroll down, tap Settings and privacy, then tap Settings.
3. **Open Accounts Center**: Tap Accounts Center.
4. **Pick your profile**: Tap Profiles, then tap your Facebook profile.
5. **Edit the name**: Tap Name and enter your new name.
6. **Review and save**: Tap Review change, then tap Save changes.

Facebook app, Accounts Center: your profile:
- Name: Your current name (tap this)
- Username: facebook.com/yourname

*Name and Username are separate rows. Changing one doesn't change the other.*

### Can't find the setting in the app?

Facebook's guide to [finding your settings](https://www.facebook.com/help/2127174237420552) says the app's Settings screen has a search box. Search for Name or Accounts Center and tap the result. This is also the quickest fix when your app version arranges the menu differently from the steps above. If the Accounts Center option isn't there at all, look for Meta Account settings instead.

### Mobile browser and Facebook Lite

Facebook's help page has separate tabs for its mobile website and Facebook Lite, but the change itself is the same: find Accounts Center in your settings, open your profile and edit Name. If Lite doesn't show the option, use the full app or a computer, which have the steps given above.

## What names are allowed on Facebook?

Facebook asks you to use the name you go by in everyday life, so people know who they're connecting with. Its page on [names allowed on Facebook](https://www.facebook.com/help/229715077154790) says your profile name should be the name your friends call you and the one that would appear on an ID or document from Facebook's accepted list. That name doesn't have to be your legal name: Facebook's [Names on Facebook](https://www.facebook.com/help/1090831264320592) page says the name you use every day can be different from it.

### What isn't allowed in a profile name

Facebook's name standards and its page on [why you can't change your name](https://www.facebook.com/help/448505685205813) list the same five things a name can't include:

- Symbols, numbers, unusual capitalization, repeated characters or repeated punctuation.
- Characters from more than one language.
- Titles of any kind, such as professional or religious titles.
- Words or phrases in place of a name.
- Offensive or suggestive words of any kind.

Two more rules sit alongside them. Profiles are for personal use, so a business, organization or idea needs a Facebook Page rather than a profile. And you can't pretend to be anything or anyone else.

### Examples of names that pass and fail

These examples are ours, made up to show how each of Facebook's rules applies. They aren't taken from Facebook's pages.

| Example | Likely result | Which rule applies |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Maria Lopez | Allowed | An everyday first and last name |
| Mia Lopez, for someone named Maria | Allowed | A nickname that's a variation of your real name can be your first or middle name |
| Dr. Maria Lopez | Not allowed | No titles, including professional ones |
| MaRiA LoPeZ | Not allowed | No unusual capitalization |
| Maria ~Lopez~ | Not allowed | No symbols or unnecessary punctuation |
| M4ria Lopez | Not allowed | No numbers |
| Lopez Family Bakery | Not allowed on a profile | Businesses need a Page, not a profile |
| Coffee Lover | Not allowed | Words or phrases can't replace a name |

**Fine for a profile name**
- The first and last name you use day to day
- A nickname that's a variation of your real name, as a first or middle name
- A name that differs from your legal name, if it's the one you go by

**Will be rejected**
- Titles such as Dr., Rev. or Officer
- Symbols, numbers or odd capitalization
- Two languages' characters mixed together
- A business, slogan or phrase instead of a name

*Based on Facebook's name standards. Put extra names, such as a maiden name, in Other names instead.*

### What about fancy fonts in a Facebook name?

Copy-and-paste font generators don't change the font. They swap ordinary letters for look-alike Unicode symbols. Because Facebook's standards rule out symbols and characters from more than one language, a name typed in styled letters is likely to be rejected, and Facebook's [What name to use](https://www.facebook.com/help/511512475671884) page asks you to keep your name free of unusual capitals, punctuation and symbols. Save styled text for places that accept it, such as a post or your bio. Our [Facebook font generator](/tools/facebook-font-generator) and [Facebook bio generator](/tools/facebook-bio-generator) are built for those.

### If you only have one name

Some people have a single name, which Facebook calls a mononym. Facebook's [single name help page](https://www.facebook.com/help/1624166354518070) says existing accounts should use the Changing your name contact form, linked from that page, and new accounts whose name was rejected at sign-up should use the My name wasn't accepted form. Both forms ask for a first name and a surname, so enter your one name in both fields. Facebook says it will then work with you to put the single name on your account.

### Writing your name in another script

Mixing two scripts in your main name isn't allowed, but Facebook does let you add a language-specific name. Its [language-specific name page](https://www.facebook.com/help/217868321565724) says people who use Facebook in that language see that version of your name on your profile, in search, posts, comments and photo tags. It's available only in some languages. To add one, go to Accounts Center, select your profile, click Name, then Manage other names, and choose the option to add a nickname or birth name.

## How often can you change your name on Facebook?

Once every 60 days. Facebook's name change page, its Names on Facebook page and its What name to use page all give the same limit: after you change your name, you can't change it again for 60 days. None of them mention a way to skip the wait, so treat every change as one you'll live with for two months.

- Before you start: Check the name against Facebook's name standards and spell it exactly as you want it.
- Day 0: You click Save changes. The new name replaces the old one and the 60-day wait begins.
- Any time after: Facebook may ask you to confirm the name. Some features can be limited until you confirm or edit it.
- Day 60: You can change your profile name again.

*The 60-day limit comes from Facebook's name change and Names on Facebook help pages.*

### Can I change it back if I make a mistake?

Facebook's help pages don't describe a separate undo for a name change. Changing back is just another name change, so plan on the 60-day limit applying. If you're blocked by a genuine error, such as a typo you didn't spot, the page on why you can't change your name offers a link to let Facebook know about the problem. There's no promise in Facebook's pages that it will lift the limit early.

### Do other names count toward the limit?

The 60-day limit is described for your profile name. Facebook's [page on other names](https://www.facebook.com/help/131728300237162) doesn't mention it for nicknames, maiden names or professional names, so adding one of those is a way to show a second name without spending your name change.

## Does Facebook review a name change?

For a personal profile, Facebook's help pages describe the change as something you make yourself: review it, then save it. They don't describe a waiting period for approval. What Facebook does say is that it may ask you to confirm that the name on your account is the name you're known by.

Per Facebook's Names on Facebook page, if a message asks you to confirm your name when you log in, you may lose access to some features while Facebook works with you to confirm or edit it. To respond, log in and follow the on-screen steps. You may be asked to upload an ID, or another document from Facebook's accepted list, that shows the name you use day to day. The page on why you can't change your name also lists not confirming your name when asked as one reason a change fails.

Pages work differently. When you rename a Page in the app, the final button is Submit for approval, and on a computer it's Request change. A Page name is reviewed before it goes live. Facebook's Page help doesn't give a review time.

## What ID does Facebook accept to confirm your name?

If Facebook asks you to confirm your name, its [accepted ID page](https://www.facebook.com/help/159096464162185) gives two routes. You don't need a government ID, as Facebook's What name to use page points out, but it is the simplest route because one document is enough.

| Route | How many | Examples Facebook lists | What it must show |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Government-issued ID | One | Driver's license, passport, national identity card, birth certificate | Your name and date of birth, or your name and photo |
| Non-government ID | Two | Student card, library card, employment verification, diploma, loyalty card, refugee card | Your name on each, matching the name you want; at least one with your date of birth or photo |

- 60 days: between profile name changes
- 1: government ID is enough to confirm your name
- 2: non-government IDs needed if you don't use a government one

*Sources: Facebook's name change page and its page on the types of ID Facebook accepts.*

### How to send ID safely

- You can cover information Facebook doesn't need, such as an ID number, before you take the photo. Facebook says it ignores sensitive details that aren't needed for the review.
- Don't edit the photo to hide details. Facebook doesn't accept photos that have been digitally altered.
- Send only what's asked for. Facebook says extra documents may slow the review down.
- For non-government IDs, the name on them has to match the name you want on your profile.
- After you upload, delete the photo of your ID from your phone's gallery, as Facebook suggests.

### What happens to your ID afterward

Facebook's page on [what happens to your ID](https://www.facebook.com/help/155050237914643) says it's stored securely and won't be visible on your profile or to your friends. Facebook uses it to confirm your identity and to improve its systems for spotting fake IDs, and it may review it with automated systems and trusted service providers. For some checks, such as running ads or Meta Verified, it says it keeps the ID for up to 180 days, or up to a year in some cases. In some cases you can change how long it's kept from your identity confirmation settings.

> Only send ID through Facebook itself, from the prompt in your account or a Facebook help page. Facebook's security guide warns about fake Facebook sites and suspicious links, and nobody else needs a copy of your ID to change your name.

## How do I add a nickname, maiden name or other name?

If people know you by more than one name, you don't have to choose. Facebook lets you add other names, such as a maiden name, a nickname or a professional name, without touching your main name. Facebook's [other names page](https://www.facebook.com/help/131728300237162) says the other name can be different from the name on your ID.

1. **Open your profile**: Click your profile picture in the top right, then click your name.
2. **Open About**: Click About, then Names.
3. **Add the name**: Under Other names, click Add other names.
4. **Choose the type**: Next to Name type, select what kind of name it is, then enter it.
5. **Decide where it shows**: Tick Show at top of profile if you want it next to your full name.
6. **Save**: Click Save.

Facebook profile: Your profile › About › Names › Add other names › Save

*Other names live in your profile's About tab, not in Accounts Center.*

### Who sees your other name

If you tick Show at top of profile, the other name appears beside your full name. If you don't, it still appears in the About section of your profile, and Facebook says it appears in search results either way. So if you're adding an old name for friends to find you, it works without the box ticked. If you'd rather people couldn't search for that name, don't add it.

### How to edit or remove another name

Go back to your profile, click About, then Names, and click Edit next to the name. Click Remove, then Remove again to confirm. Facebook's page describes removing a name rather than rewording it, so to fix a spelling mistake, remove the name and add it again.

### Nicknames in groups

Some Facebook groups let members post, comment and react under a nickname. Facebook's [group nickname page](https://www.facebook.com/help/1997112804420300) says it works only where the feature is offered, the admins allow it and it's available to your account. Your main profile name doesn't change, and admins, moderators and Facebook's systems can still see your main profile. You can change a group nickname only once every two days.

## Why can't I change my name on Facebook?

When the Name option is greyed out, missing or keeps rejecting what you type, the cause is almost always one of the reasons on Facebook's [can't change your name page](https://www.facebook.com/help/448505685205813). Match what you see to the table.

| What happens | Likely reason | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| You changed your name recently and can't edit it | The 60-day limit | Wait until 60 days have passed since the last change |
| Facebook says you've changed it too many times | Your name changes too often | Wait, then make one careful change |
| The new name is rejected when you save | It breaks the name standards | Remove titles, symbols, numbers, extra words and odd capitals |
| The name mixes alphabets | Characters from more than one language | Use one script, and add a language-specific name for the other |
| Facebook asks for ID | The name may not match the name on an ID | Use the name on your documents, or send an accepted ID |
| A confirmation prompt appears at login | You haven't confirmed your name | Follow the on-screen steps to confirm or edit it |
| Accounts Center isn't in your settings | Your account uses Meta Account settings | Look for Meta Account settings, or search Settings for Name |

**What do you see when you try to change your name?**
- The Name option is there but greyed out or won't save → Check when you last changed it. If it's under 60 days, wait. If not, the name probably breaks a standard.
- An error that the name isn't allowed → Strip out titles, symbols, numbers, extra words and unusual capitals, then try again.
- A request to confirm my name or upload ID → Follow the prompt and send one government ID or two non-government IDs that show the name.
- I can't find Name or Accounts Center at all → Search Settings for Name. Some accounts see Meta Account settings instead of Accounts Center.

*Most failed name changes come down to timing, the name standards or a confirmation request.*

### If you're Meta Verified

Meta's [Meta Verified terms](https://www.facebook.com/legal/MV_terms) say that once your account is verified, you may not be able to change your profile name, username, date of birth or photo without going through the subscription application and verification again. If you pay for Meta Verified, expect a name change to send you back through verification.

### If someone else is using your name

If you can't use your name because another account is pretending to be you, that's an impersonation problem rather than a name change problem. The can't change your name page links to Facebook's guidance on impersonation and on blocking someone. Report the fake account rather than changing your own name to get around it.

### When to contact Facebook

If you've waited out the 60 days, your name follows the standards and the change still fails, Facebook's name pages say to let it know through the link on the help page. For a single name, use the Changing your name contact form. It opens once you're logged in to Facebook. Facebook's help pages also offer a chat with the Meta AI support assistant.

## How do I change my Facebook Page name?

A Page's name has its own setting, and it goes to Facebook for approval. You also need the right kind of access. Facebook's [Page name help page](https://www.facebook.com/help/271607792873806) says you need Facebook access to the Page to request a name change. People with task access, who manage the Page only through tools such as Meta Business Suite, can't request one.

### On a computer

1. **Switch into the Page**: Click your profile photo in the top right, click See all profiles and select the Page.
2. **Open the Page's settings**: Click the Page's photo in the top right, click Settings and privacy, then Settings.
3. **Find the name**: Click Page setup, then Name.
4. **Edit it**: Under General Page settings, click Edit next to the Page name and type the new one.
5. **Request the change**: Click Review change, enter your password and click Request change.

### In the Facebook app

1. **Switch into the Page**: Tap Menu, tap the down arrow beside your name and select the Page.
2. **Open Settings**: Tap Menu again, scroll down, tap Settings and privacy, then Settings.
3. **Find the name**: Tap Page setup, then Name.
4. **Submit it**: Enter the new name, tap Review change, then tap Submit for approval.

**Your profile name**
- Changed in Accounts Center
- Saved by you after Review change
- Must be the name you use in everyday life
- Limited to once every 60 days

**A Page name**
- Changed in the Page's settings under Page setup
- Submitted to Facebook for approval
- Must accurately reflect what the Page is
- Needs Facebook access, not task access

*Renaming a Page doesn't touch your personal name, and the reverse is true too.*

### Rules for Page names

Facebook's [Page name guidelines](https://www.facebook.com/help/519912414718764) say a Page name has to accurately reflect the Page. It can't include:

- Abusive terms, or terms that violate someone's rights.
- The word official, unless it really is the official Page for a brand, place, organization or public figure.
- Improper capitalization or all capitals, except for acronyms.
- Symbols such as the registered trademark sign, or unnecessary punctuation.
- Descriptions or slogans, which belong in the Page's About section.
- Any variation of Facebook, Meta or another Meta product name.

A Page name also can't be only one general word or only a general place name. Facebook does allow organizations that represent a place, such as a city's mayor's office, to use the place in their name, and a Page can use a name that differs from the organization's own name if it still describes the Page accurately. If you need ideas that fit those rules, our [Facebook Page name generator](/tools/facebook-page-name-generator) can suggest some to start from.

### Why the Page name option is missing

- You have task access or a role that doesn't allow name changes. Check your access in the Page's settings.
- You or someone else with Facebook access changed the name recently. Facebook doesn't say how long you have to wait.
- The Page has limits or restrictions on it. Our guide to [why you can't post on Facebook](/blog/why-cant-i-post-on-facebook) explains Page Status and how to check it.
- It's a regional Page that belongs to a global Page. Those names can't be changed.

> Changing a Page's name doesn't change its username or web address. Update the username separately if it no longer fits. If you're retiring a Page rather than renaming it, see our guide on [how to delete a Facebook Page](/blog/how-to-delete-a-facebook-page).

## What happens after you change your name?

Your new name shows on your profile and wherever your name appears on Facebook. A few related things don't change on their own, and one might change when you don't expect it.

### Your username stays the same

Your username is the part of your profile's web address after facebook.com/. Facebook's [username page](https://www.facebook.com/help/162586890471598) treats it as a separate setting: in Accounts Center, click Profiles, select the profile, click Username, enter the new one and click Done. Usernames can use only the letters A to Z, numbers and full stops for now. Changing it also changes your Messenger link at m.me, and Facebook warns you may not be able to get your old username back.

### Instagram may change too

If your Facebook and Instagram profiles are in the same Accounts Center and you turned on profile sync, your name is shared between them. Meta's [sync help page](https://www.facebook.com/help/instagram/451345223552070) says synced details are your name, username, profile photo and avatar, that a name has to be synced before the rest, and that synced details match across all synced profiles. If you want different names on Facebook and Instagram, check Sync profile info in Accounts Center before you change anything. Facebook's username page adds that a synced username change also updates your Instagram address. To check whether an Instagram handle is free before you sync, see our guide on [checking if an Instagram username is available](/blog/how-to-check-if-an-instagram-username-is-available).

### Who can see your name

Your name is always public on Facebook, along with your profile picture, cover photo and username, according to Facebook's [public information page](https://www.facebook.com/help/203805466323736). You can't hide it with privacy settings, but you can limit almost everything else on your profile. Our guide on [how to make your Facebook private](/blog/how-to-make-facebook-private) covers every setting. If a name change is part of a fresh start, it's also a good time to [change your Facebook password](/blog/how-to-change-facebook-password).

### Your profile picture and cover photo

Many people change their name and photo together, for example after a marriage or a rebrand. Profile pictures are a separate setting. If you're also updating a Page's look, our [social media image sizes guide](/blog/social-media-image-sizes) lists the dimensions, and the [Facebook cover photo resizer](/tools/facebook-cover-photo-resizer) crops an image to fit.

## Will changing my name affect my Pages or scheduled posts?

Changing your personal name doesn't rename any Page you manage, because a Page name has its own setting and approval. Posts on a Page are published as the Page, so your followers see the Page's name on them, not yours.

This matters if you schedule content. Facebook doesn't let apps post to personal profiles, so schedulers publish to Pages. [PostMesh posts to Facebook Pages](/platform/facebook) you manage through the official Pages API, and what it reads from Facebook is the names and pictures of the Pages you allow, not your personal profile. If you're renaming a Page as part of a rebrand, plan the timing: the new name has to be approved before it appears, so hold back any posts that refer to the new name until it's live. Our guides to the [best time to post on Facebook](/blog/best-time-to-post-on-facebook) and to [cross-posting to multiple platforms](/blog/how-to-cross-post-to-multiple-platforms) help with the announcement itself.

## Before you press Save: a checklist

Because of the 60-day limit, a minute of checking saves two months of living with a typo. Run through this list first.

**Before you change your Facebook name**
- [ ] It's the name you use day to day, spelled the way it appears on your documents
- [ ] No titles, symbols, numbers, extra words or unusual capitals
- [ ] One script only; add another language's version as a language-specific name
- [ ] You haven't changed it in the last 60 days
- [ ] You've checked whether profile sync will change your Instagram name too
- [ ] Any nickname or maiden name goes in Other names instead
- [ ] You're renaming the right profile in Accounts Center

*Each item comes from a Facebook help page cited in this guide.*

If your name change is part of leaving Facebook rather than staying, you have other options. Our guides cover how to [deactivate Facebook](/blog/how-to-deactivate-facebook) for a break and how to [delete your Facebook account](/blog/how-to-delete-facebook-account) for good.

## Questions

### Will my friends be told that I changed my name?

Facebook's name help pages don't say that friends get a notification. Your new name simply appears wherever your name shows on Facebook.

### Can I change my name on Facebook before 60 days are up?

Facebook's help pages don't describe a way to skip the wait. If you think the limit is blocking you by mistake, use the link on Facebook's page about why you can't change your name.

### Do I need to send ID to change my name?

Not to make the change itself. Facebook may later ask you to confirm the name, and then you can send one government ID or two non-government IDs that show it.

### Can I use my nickname as my Facebook name?

Yes, as a first or middle name, if it's a variation of your real name. Any other nickname can go in Other names on your profile's About tab.

### Why does Facebook say my name isn't allowed?

The usual reasons are a title, symbols or numbers, unusual capitals, mixed alphabets or a phrase in place of a name. Remove those and try again.

### Does changing my Facebook name change my Instagram name?

Only if both are in the same Accounts Center and you've turned on profile sync. Check Sync profile info in Accounts Center first if you want them to differ.

### Can I put my business name on my personal profile?

No. Facebook says profiles are for personal use, so a business, organization or brand needs a Facebook Page.

### How long does a Facebook Page name change take?

Facebook submits Page name changes for approval but doesn't publish a review time. Keep using the old name in posts until the new one appears.

### Can a Page editor change the Page's name?

Facebook says you need Facebook access to the Page to request a name change. People with only task access can't do it.

### Can I hide my name on Facebook?

No. Your name is part of the information Facebook always makes public, along with your profile picture, cover photo and username.
