# How to deactivate Instagram (and how to come back)

Canonical: https://postmesh.app/blog/how-to-deactivate-instagram

By PostMesh team. Published 2026-10-31; updated 2026-10-31.

To deactivate Instagram, go to your profile, tap Menu, open Accounts Center (or Meta Account), choose Deactivation or deletion, pick the profile and tap Deactivate account; on a computer, start from More, then Settings. Your photos, comments and likes stay hidden until you log back in, and Instagram lets you deactivate once a week.

Deactivating is Instagram's pause button. It hides your photos, comments and likes from other people without deleting anything, and you undo it by logging back in. The steps now live in Accounts Center, and Instagram says it's gradually moving people to a newer Meta Account menu, so the screens you see may not match an older guide. Everything below comes from Instagram's own help center pages, which we opened and checked for this guide, with both menu layouts covered.

## The short answer

Instagram's page on [temporarily deactivating your profile](https://help.instagram.com/728869160569983) says that when you deactivate, your photos, comments and likes are hidden until you reactivate by logging back in. You can deactivate from a computer, a mobile browser or the Instagram app, you need to be able to log in to do it, and you can only deactivate once a week. Nothing is deleted. If you want your data gone for good, that's a different option on the same screen, covered in our guide on [how to delete an Instagram account](/blog/how-to-delete-instagram-account).

**What do you want to happen to your Instagram?**
- I want a break and might come back → Deactivate. Your photos, comments and likes are hidden until you log back in.
- I want to leave and remove my data → Delete. It becomes permanent 30 days after the request.
- I want to stay, but fewer people should see me → Make the account private or block specific people instead.
- I only want it off one phone or computer → Log out on that device. Deactivation hides the whole account everywhere.

*Deactivation is the right tool only when you want the whole account hidden for a while.*

| Question | What Instagram's help center says |
| --- | --- |
| Where can I deactivate? | From a computer, a mobile browser or the Instagram app. |
| Do I need to log in first? | Yes. You need to be able to log in to deactivate. |
| What gets hidden? | Your photos, comments and likes. |
| How long can it stay deactivated? | No limit is published. It stays hidden until you log back in. |
| How often can I do it? | Once a week. |
| How do I undo it? | Log back in. |
| Is anything deleted? | No. Deletion is a separate choice on the same screen. |
| Does it affect Edits? | Yes. Deactivating Instagram also deactivates Edits. |

## What's the difference between deactivating and deleting Instagram?

Both options sit on one screen in Accounts Center called Deactivation or deletion, so it's easy to tap the wrong one. They do very different things.

Deactivation hides your account and keeps everything. When you log back in, it comes back. Deletion, according to Instagram's page on [permanently deleting your profile](https://help.instagram.com/139886812848894), permanently removes your profile, photos, videos, comments, likes and followers. Thirty days after the request, the profile and all its information are permanently deleted and can't be retrieved, and the number of days you have to cancel varies by region. The full process can take up to 90 days, and copies may stay in backup storage after that.

**Deactivate**
- Photos, comments and likes hidden
- Nothing is deleted
- Undo by logging back in
- No published time limit
- Allowed once a week

**Delete**
- Profile, posts, comments, likes and followers removed
- Permanent 30 days after the request
- Cancel window varies by region
- Full process can take up to 90 days
- Export tool unavailable afterwards

*Deactivation is reversible at any time. Deletion has a deadline.*

### Which one should you choose?

If you're unsure, deactivate first. It costs nothing, it has no deadline you can miss, and if you decide later that you're done for good, you can log back in and delete from the same screen. Deletion is the right choice when you want your content removed rather than hidden, for example after a breakup, a career change or a privacy scare where you don't want old posts to exist at all.

One practical difference people forget: once a profile is deleted, Instagram says you lose access to its Export your information tool. If there's any chance you'll want your photos or messages later, download a copy before deleting. With deactivation, your content is still there when you return.

## How do I deactivate Instagram on iPhone or Android?

Instagram's help pages give the same steps for the iPhone and Android apps. They also warn that Instagram is gradually moving people to Meta Accounts, so your menu may say Accounts Center or Meta Account. Both lead to the same Deactivation or deletion screen. Check which one you have, then follow the matching steps.

### If your menu shows Manage account

Instagram describes this as the layout with Manage accounts at the bottom of Accounts Center. Its deactivation page gives the steps for Accounts Center, and its page on [deactivating Edits](https://help.instagram.com/1113534533571142) gives the same path starting from Meta Account, plus the confirmation screens that follow.

1. **Go to your profile**: Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
2. **Open the menu**: Tap Menu in the top right.
3. **Open Accounts Center or Meta Account**: Tap Accounts Center (or Meta Account), then tap Manage account.
4. **Pick the profile**: Tap Manage next to the Instagram profile you want to deactivate, then tap Deactivation or deletion.
5. **Choose deactivation**: Choose the account, tap Deactivate account, then tap Continue.
6. **Confirm**: Re-enter your password and tap Continue, select a reason, then tap Deactivate account to finish.

Instagram app: Profile › Menu › Accounts Center › Manage account › Deactivation or deletion › Deactivate account

*If your menu says Meta Account instead of Accounts Center, the rest of the path is the same.*

Instagram, Deactivation or deletion:
- Deactivate account: Hide until you log back in (tap this)
- Delete account: Remove permanently

*The two choices Instagram's help pages describe on this screen. Pick Deactivate account to pause.*

### If you see Personal details and Account ownership and control

Some accounts still have the older Accounts Center layout, where Instagram says you'll see Accounts at the bottom of Accounts Center. The path is different but ends on the same screen: tap Profile, tap Menu, tap Accounts Center, then Personal details, then Account ownership and control, then Deactivation or deletion. Tap the profile, choose to deactivate rather than delete, tap Continue and follow the on-screen instructions.

> Instagram's own page labels this second set of steps loosely, and the deletion page uses the exact same path to delete. Read the button before you confirm: you want Deactivate account, not Delete account.

### On an iPad

Instagram's iPad steps differ only at the start. Tap your profile picture on the left to go to your profile, tap Menu in the top right, then tap Accounts Center and Manage accounts. From there, tap Manage next to the profile, tap Deactivation or deletion, choose the profile, tap Deactivate account and Continue.

## How do I deactivate Instagram on a computer or in a browser?

You don't need the app at all. Instagram's computer steps work at instagram.com in a desktop browser, which is handy if you've already deleted the app from your phone. Our guide to [using Instagram on a desktop](/blog/can-you-post-on-instagram-from-desktop) covers what else the website can do.

1. **Log in at instagram.com**: Use the account you want to deactivate.
2. **Open Settings**: Click More in the bottom left, then click Settings.
3. **Open Accounts Center**: Click Accounts Center, then click Manage account.
4. **Pick the profile**: Click Manage next to the profile, then click Deactivation or deletion.
5. **Deactivate**: Choose the account, click Deactivate account, then click Continue and follow the instructions to confirm.

instagram.com: More › Settings › Accounts Center › Manage account › Deactivation or deletion › Deactivate account

*The same screen as the app, reached from the More menu in the bottom left.*

On the older layout, Instagram's computer steps are: More, Settings, Accounts Center, Personal details, Account ownership and control, then Deactivation or deletion. Click the profile, click Continue, and follow the instructions, making sure you pick deactivation.

### In a phone's web browser

Instagram's mobile browser help gives exactly the same clicks as the computer version: log in, More, Settings, Accounts Center, Manage account, Manage next to the profile, Deactivation or deletion, Deactivate account, Continue. That's useful if the app keeps crashing or you've removed it.

> Instagram says you can only deactivate from a computer, a mobile browser or the Instagram app. If you mostly use another app, such as Instagram Lite, and can't find the option there, switch to one of those three.

## How long can Instagram stay deactivated, and how often can you do it?

Instagram doesn't publish a maximum. Its deactivation page says your content is hidden until you reactivate by logging back in, and it doesn't mention any point at which a deactivated account is deleted or reactivated automatically. That's the key contrast with deletion, which has a firm 30-day mark after which the account can't be recovered.

- When you confirm: Your photos, comments and likes are hidden; Edits is deactivated too
- While it's off: Nothing is deleted, and Instagram publishes no deadline
- When you log back in: The account is reactivated
- Want to pause again?: Instagram allows one deactivation a week

*A deactivation has a start, but no published end date.*

### Will Instagram delete my account if it stays deactivated too long?

None of Instagram's pages on deactivation say so. Don't confuse deactivation with a disabled account, though. A disabled account is one Instagram has taken action on for breaking its rules, and the rules for getting it back are different. If you see a message about your account being disabled or suspended when you log in, our guides to [suspended Instagram accounts](/blog/instagram-account-suspended) and [appealing a disabled account](/blog/instagram-account-disabled-appeal) explain what to do.

### Can I keep my username while deactivated?

Instagram's deactivation page doesn't discuss usernames. What it does say is that nothing is deleted while you're away, and the account comes back when you log in. The username question matters more for deletion: Instagram says that after a profile is deleted, the same username can be used again by you or anyone else as long as no one has taken it. If you're worried about losing a handle, deactivate rather than delete, and see our guide on [checking if an Instagram username is available](/blog/how-to-check-if-an-instagram-username-is-available).

### How often can you deactivate Instagram?

Once a week. Instagram's deactivation page says you can only deactivate your profile once a week, and its Edits page repeats it. Threads has the same weekly limit for its own profiles, according to Instagram's page on [deactivating a Threads profile](https://help.instagram.com/558007373138554).

This matters if you reactivate by accident. Instagram describes reactivation simply as logging back in, so a login from an app on an old phone, a tablet, or a browser that still remembers you counts. If that happens, you may have to wait before you can deactivate again. Before you deactivate, log out of devices you no longer use (the steps are in the section on alternatives below), so a stray login doesn't undo your break.

### What if I need to hide my account again sooner?

If you're inside the one-week window, you can still make the account private or block specific people while you wait. Neither hides the account the way deactivation does, but both reduce who sees your posts. The steps for a private account are in the alternatives section further down.

## How do I reactivate my Instagram account?

You log back in. Instagram's deactivation page says your content stays hidden until you reactivate it by logging back in, and its Edits page says the same about Edits content. There's no separate reactivation form.

1. **Open Instagram**: Use the app or instagram.com in a browser.
2. **Log in**: Enter your username, email address or phone number and your password, as you normally would.
3. **Complete any security check**: If you use two-factor authentication, enter the login code or a backup code when asked.
4. **Check your profile**: Open your profile and confirm your photos are visible again.

Instagram's [two-factor authentication page](https://help.instagram.com/566810106808145) says a code is required when someone logs in from a device Instagram doesn't recognize. If you've changed phones while your account was off, have your authentication app or phone number ready. Instagram's [backup code page](https://help.instagram.com/1006568999411025) says you must be logged in to see or generate backup codes, so save a copy before you deactivate, not after.

### What if I've forgotten my password?

Tap Forgot password? on the login screen and request a login link by email or text. Our guide on [how to change or reset an Instagram password](/blog/how-to-change-instagram-password) covers every reset route, including resetting through Facebook and what to do when the email never arrives. If you've lost access to the email or phone number on the account, see our guide to [contacting Instagram support](/blog/how-to-contact-instagram-support) for the recovery options Instagram offers.

### What if someone else reactivated it?

If your account comes back on without you logging in, treat it as a security problem. Instagram's [hacked account page](https://help.instagram.com/149494825257596) suggests changing your password, turning on two-factor authentication, checking that the email and phone number on the account are yours, removing linked accounts you don't recognize in Accounts Center, and revoking access for suspicious third-party apps.

## What do other people see when you deactivate Instagram?

Instagram's deactivation page names three things that are hidden while you're away: your photos, your comments and your likes. That covers what most people care about: your grid, the comments you left on other people's posts, and the likes you gave. Here's what Instagram's pages say about each part of your account, and where they say nothing.

| Part of your account | While deactivated |
| --- | --- |
| Your photos | Hidden until you log back in. |
| Comments you left on other posts | Hidden until you log back in. |
| Likes you gave | Hidden until you log back in. |
| Your Edits content | Hidden and not accessible until you reactivate Instagram. |
| Direct messages | Not covered on the deactivation page. |
| Your Threads profile | Not covered; Threads has its own deactivation setting. |
| Your Facebook account | Not affected by the steps, which have you pick one profile. |

### What happens to my messages?

The deactivation page doesn't say what happens to your direct messages, so we won't guess. What Instagram does document is how to control messages yourself. Its page on [deleting a chat](https://help.instagram.com/1467256816910908) says deleting a conversation only removes it from your inbox; it still appears for everyone else in it. Its page on [unsending a message](https://help.instagram.com/491370017690934) says an unsent message is no longer visible to the people in the chat, though they may already have seen it. If there's a message you don't want sitting in someone's inbox while you're away, unsend it before you deactivate.

### Do my followers get notified?

None of the Instagram pages we read mention a notification to followers when you deactivate. In practice, people find out when they look for your profile or notice your comments are gone. If friends rely on Instagram to reach you, tell them another way before you go.

### What happens to my followers and following lists?

Deactivation doesn't delete anything, so your followers and the accounts you follow are still there when you return. If you want to tidy your following list before a break, our guide to [seeing who doesn't follow you back](/blog/who-doesnt-follow-you-back-on-instagram) shows how to do it by hand, without giving your login to an outside app.

## Does deactivating Instagram also deactivate Threads, Edits or Facebook?

Each Meta app handles this differently, and Instagram's pages are specific about some and silent on others.

- Edits: yes. Instagram's Edits page says that because Edits is part of Instagram, deactivating your Instagram account also deactivates Edits, and your content is hidden on both until you reactivate Instagram.
- Threads: deactivated separately. Instagram's Threads page says that if you created your Threads profile with Instagram, deactivating Threads won't affect your Instagram profile. It doesn't say what deactivating Instagram does to Threads, so check your Threads profile after you deactivate if that matters to you.
- Facebook: not part of the steps. Accounts Center connects your Meta accounts for things like logging in across them, but the deactivation steps have you choose one profile on the Deactivation or deletion screen. Our guide on [deactivating Facebook](/blog/how-to-deactivate-facebook) covers that account.

Instagram's [Accounts Center page](https://help.instagram.com/1731078377046291) describes it as the place to manage connected experiences across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Meta accounts. When you deactivate, make sure the profile you tap Manage next to is the Instagram one you mean, especially if you run several accounts from one Accounts Center. Instagram's page on [adding and switching between profiles](https://help.instagram.com/1696686240613595) says you can have up to 10 accounts logged in at one time, so the list on that screen can be longer than you expect.

## Can you deactivate an Instagram business or creator account?

Yes. Instagram's deactivation page doesn't treat professional accounts differently, and the steps are the same. What changes is what you leave behind, because a business account is usually wired into other things.

### Things to check before deactivating a professional account

- A connected Facebook Page. Instagram's page on [connecting a professional account to a Facebook Page](https://help.instagram.com/402748553849926) says the connection lets you run ads, manage Instagram messages from Meta Business Suite and share posts to both. The deactivation page doesn't say how a deactivated account affects these, so pause running ads first rather than finding out.
- Meta Verified. The same page notes that an active Meta Verified subscription may be canceled in some cases if you disconnect a subscribed Facebook Page and Instagram account. Deactivating isn't disconnecting, but if your cleanup includes unlinking the Page, keep that in mind.
- People who help run the account. Tell anyone with access before you go, so a vanished profile doesn't look like a hack.
- Your numbers. If you track Insights, note your current figures first so you have a baseline when you come back. Our guide on [turning on Instagram Insights](/blog/how-to-turn-on-instagram-insights) explains where they live.

### Could switching to a personal account work instead?

Sometimes a business wants less exposure, not zero. Instagram's page on [making an account private](https://help.instagram.com/448523408565555) says business profiles can't be made private, so you'd first switch back to a personal account. Its page on [switching back to personal](https://help.instagram.com/1717693135113805) gives the path: Profile, Menu (you may also need to tap Settings), Account type and tools, Account type, Switch account type, Switch to personal account, then Switch to personal to confirm. You lose access to some Meta business tools like Meta Business Suite and Meta Ads Manager. Instagram's [page for professional accounts with unwanted managers](https://help.instagram.com/588993474002733) adds that your insights data is preserved for 90 days after switching, and you can get it back by switching to a professional account within that time.

## Why can't I find the option to deactivate Instagram?

When the option seems to be missing, the cause is usually one of the conditions on Instagram's own pages. Work through them in order.

**If Deactivate account is missing**
- [ ] Look in Accounts Center or Meta Account, not the old Settings list
- [ ] Check which layout you have: Manage account, or Personal details
- [ ] Make sure you're logged in to the account you want to pause
- [ ] Use the Instagram app, a mobile browser or a computer
- [ ] Check whether you deactivated in the last week
- [ ] Update the Instagram app, then look again
- [ ] Confirm the account isn't disabled rather than active

*Each item matches a condition on Instagram's own help pages.*

### You're looking in the wrong menu

Deactivation now lives inside Accounts Center or Meta Account, reached from Menu on your profile in the app, or from More and then Settings on the website. Instagram's help pages say it's gradually moving people to Meta Accounts, so you may see either name. If you've been scrolling through privacy and notification settings, you won't find it there.

### You deactivated recently

Instagram allows one deactivation a week. If you deactivated a few days ago and logged back in, the option may not work until the week is up. Instagram doesn't publish an error message for this, so if the date fits, wait it out and use a private account in the meantime.

### The app is out of date or misbehaving

Instagram's [technical problem page](https://help.instagram.com/381579045265733) says to update the app first when a feature isn't working. If it still fails, try the website, since the computer and mobile browser steps reach the same screen. If neither works, report it: shake your phone and tap Report a problem, or go to Profile, Menu, Help below More info and support, then Report a Problem. The same page notes that some features aren't available to everyone yet.

### You can't log in

Instagram says you need to be able to log in to deactivate. There's no form to deactivate an account on someone's behalf or without access. Recover the account first with our [password reset guide](/blog/how-to-change-instagram-password), then deactivate.

### The account is disabled, not active

If you see a notice about your account being disabled when you log in, the deactivation menu isn't the issue. Instagram has taken action on the account, and the notice tells you whether you can request a review. Our [suspended account guide](/blog/instagram-account-suspended) covers that case.

## What can I do instead of deactivating Instagram?

Instagram's own deactivation page points out that if you just want to change who can see your profile, you can set your posts to private or block people. Here are the options and what each one actually changes.

| Option | What it changes | How to undo |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Deactivate | Photos, comments and likes hidden from everyone | Log back in |
| Private account | Limits who can see your posts | Turn Private account off |
| Block someone | Applies only to the person you block | Unblock them |
| Delete some posts | Those posts move to Recently Deleted for 30 days | Restore from Recently Deleted |
| Log out of devices | Ends sessions on devices you pick; profile stays visible | Log in again |

### Make your account private

Instagram's private account steps: tap Profile, tap Menu, tap Account privacy below Who can see your content, turn on Private account, then tap Switch to private. Instagram notes that accounts of people under 18 are private by default, and that business profiles can't go private without first switching back to a personal account.

### Hide some posts instead of all of them

If a few posts are the problem, delete them instead of hiding everything. Instagram's page on [what happens to deleted content](https://help.instagram.com/711062676142607) says deleted posts go to Recently Deleted and are removed automatically after 30 days, during which you can restore them from the Android or iPhone app. Stories that aren't in your archive are removed after up to 24 hours.

### Limit specific people

Blocking or restricting one person can solve what a full deactivation is meant to solve. Our guides on [what restrict means on Instagram](/blog/what-does-restrict-mean-on-instagram), [hiding your followers](/blog/how-to-hide-followers-on-instagram) and [turning off your active status](/blog/how-to-turn-off-active-status-on-instagram) cover the quieter options.

### Log out of devices you don't use

Instagram's [login activity page](https://help.instagram.com/2761108904184084) gives this path in the app: Profile, Menu, Password and security, Where you're logged in, tap one of your accounts, then Select devices to log out, pick the devices and tap Log out. Doing this before you deactivate also stops an old device from reactivating your account by accident.

## What should I do before I deactivate?

A few minutes of preparation makes coming back painless. None of these are required by Instagram, but each one heads off a problem its help pages describe.

**Before you deactivate Instagram**
- [ ] Save your two-factor backup codes while you're logged in
- [ ] Check the email and phone number on the account are current
- [ ] Finish any data export, since deactivated profiles can't export
- [ ] Log out of old devices so they can't reactivate you
- [ ] Unsend any messages you don't want left behind
- [ ] Cancel posts scheduled for the account
- [ ] Tell close contacts how else to reach you
- [ ] Note the date, since you can deactivate once a week

*Coming back means logging in. This list keeps that easy.*

The email and phone check matters more than it sounds. Instagram's page on [losing access to your email or phone](https://help.instagram.com/358911864194456) says that if you can't access the email you registered with and didn't link your Instagram and Facebook accounts, Instagram is unable to give you access to the account. A long break is when an old email address can quietly stop working.

If you'd like a copy of your photos anyway, Instagram's [export page](https://help.instagram.com/181231772500920) says you can export from Your information and permissions in Accounts Center, that the link can take up to 30 days to arrive, and that you have 4 days to download it once it's ready. The same page lists deactivated profiles among those you can't export from until you reactivate, so start the export well before you plan to deactivate and wait for the download.

## What happens to scheduled posts and connected apps?

Anything set to publish to your account while it's hidden is worth cancelling first, whatever tool you use. In PostMesh, cancel those posts in Posts or Calendar; a post that has already started sending can't be cancelled. If you'll be away for a while, disconnect the account too, since each connected account counts toward your plan's limit on the [pricing page](/pricing). [Instagram connections in PostMesh](/platform/instagram) publish through Instagram's API.

For other apps you've logged into with Instagram, Instagram's page on [apps and websites](https://help.instagram.com/1144624522593085) gives the path: Profile, Menu, Website permissions below Your app and media, Apps and websites, Active, then Remove next to the app. When you come back, our guide to [scheduling Instagram posts](/blog/how-to-schedule-instagram-posts) helps you restart at a steady pace instead of in a burst.

## When should you delete instead?

Deactivation keeps everything. If what you want is for your photos, comments and followers to stop existing, deactivation won't do it, and deleting is the honest choice. Do it in this order: log in, export a copy of your information, cancel anything scheduled, then request deletion from the same Deactivation or deletion screen. Instagram makes the deletion permanent 30 days after the request, and the number of days you have to cancel varies by region. Our step-by-step guide on [deleting an Instagram account](/blog/how-to-delete-instagram-account) covers the waiting period, what's removed and what isn't, and how to cancel.

## Questions

### Can I deactivate Instagram from the app now?

Yes. Instagram's help page lists the Instagram app alongside a computer and a mobile browser. The option is in Accounts Center or Meta Account, under Deactivation or deletion.

### How long can I keep my Instagram deactivated?

Instagram doesn't publish a limit. It says your content stays hidden until you reactivate by logging back in.

### Why can't I deactivate Instagram again?

Instagram only allows one deactivation a week. If you logged back in after deactivating recently, wait for the week to pass.

### Does logging in reactivate my Instagram?

Yes. Instagram describes reactivation as logging back in, so any login to the account brings it back.

### Can people still see my comments when I'm deactivated?

No. Instagram says your photos, comments and likes are hidden until you reactivate.

### Will my messages disappear if I deactivate?

Instagram's deactivation page doesn't say. If you want a message removed from someone's inbox, unsend it first; deleting a chat only removes it for you.

### Does deactivating Instagram deactivate Threads?

Instagram says deactivating Threads doesn't affect Instagram, but it doesn't spell out the reverse. Threads has its own deactivation setting.

### Can I deactivate someone else's Instagram account?

No. Instagram says you need to be able to log in to the account to deactivate it.

### Is deactivating the same as a disabled account?

No. Deactivation is something you choose and undo by logging in. A disabled account is Instagram's enforcement action, with its own review process.

### Can I deactivate an Instagram business account?

Yes, with the same steps. Pause ads and tell anyone who helps run the account before you do.
