# How to delete your Instagram account permanently

To delete your Instagram account, go to your profile, tap Menu (or More, then Settings on instagram.com), open Accounts Center, choose Deactivation or deletion, pick the account and select Delete account. Instagram permanently deletes the profile and its information 30 days after the request, and you can cancel before then by logging back in, though the number of days you have varies by region.

Requesting deletion only takes a few taps. Doing it well takes a little longer: you'll want a copy of your photos first, you should know how long you have to change your mind, and it helps to know what Instagram keeps after the account is gone. This guide covers all of it, using only Instagram's and Meta's own help pages, opened and checked for this article, with steps for the app and the website and for both versions of the Accounts Center menu.

## The short answer

According to Instagram's page on [permanently deleting your profile](https://help.instagram.com/139886812848894), deletion happens in Accounts Center under Deactivation or deletion. When you delete, your profile, photos, videos, comments, likes and followers are permanently removed. For 30 days after your request the content isn't visible to anyone on Instagram, and after those 30 days the profile and all its information are permanently deleted. The full process can take up to 90 days. Instagram can't delete a profile for you: you have to be able to log in to request it.

**Where are you starting from?**
- I can log in and I'm sure I want it gone → Export your data, then delete in Accounts Center under Deactivation or deletion.
- I can log in but might want it back → Deactivate instead. It hides your photos, comments and likes until you log back in.
- I can't log in → Recover the account first. Instagram can't delete a profile for you.
- I already asked to delete and changed my mind → Log back in before the deadline to cancel the request.

*Find your situation, then jump to the matching section below.*

| Question | What Instagram's help center says |
| --- | --- |
| Where do I delete? | Accounts Center (or Meta Account), under Deactivation or deletion, in the app or on the web. |
| What's removed? | Your profile, photos, videos, comments, likes and followers. |
| When is it permanent? | 30 days after the request. |
| Can I cancel? | Yes, by logging back in before the deadline. The number of days varies by region. |
| How long does the whole process take? | Up to 90 days after it begins. |
| Does anything stay? | Copies may remain in backup storage, and some information may be kept for legal or safety reasons. |
| Can I get my data afterwards? | No. Export it before you delete. |
| Can I reuse my username? | Yes, if no one else has taken it, unless the profile was removed for violating the Community Standards. |

## Should you delete or deactivate your Instagram?

Instagram puts both options on the same Deactivation or deletion screen, and its deletion page suggests deactivating if you'd just like to take a break. Instagram's page on [temporarily deactivating](https://help.instagram.com/728869160569983) says deactivation hides your photos, comments and likes until you log back in, and you can do it once a week. Deletion removes them for good.

**Deactivate**
- Photos, comments and likes hidden
- Nothing deleted
- Undo by logging back in
- No published deadline

**Delete**
- Profile, posts, comments, likes and followers removed
- Permanent 30 days after the request
- Cancel by logging in before the deadline
- No export once it's gone

*Deactivation pauses the account. Deletion ends it.*

Delete when you want your content to stop existing, not just to stop being seen. Deactivate when you're tired, busy or unsure. If you go the deactivation route, our guide on [how to deactivate Instagram](/blog/how-to-deactivate-instagram) covers the steps, the weekly limit and what other people see.

## How do I download my Instagram data before deleting?

Do this first, because it can't be done later. Instagram's deletion page says that after your profile is deleted, you won't have access to the Export your information tool. Its [export page](https://help.instagram.com/181231772500920) adds a second catch: you can't export from a profile that's scheduled for deletion. You'd have to cancel the deletion first. So start the export, wait for the file, download it, and only then request deletion.

1. **Go to your profile and open the menu**: Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right, then tap Menu in the top right. On a computer, click More in the bottom left, then Settings.
2. **Open Your information and permissions**: Tap Meta Account (or Accounts Center), then tap Your information and permissions.
3. **Create the export**: Tap Export your information, tap Create export, select the profile, then tap Next.
4. **Choose where it goes**: Select Export to device, or Export to external service to send it to another service.
5. **Customize and start**: Pick the information, date range, format, notification email and media quality, then tap Start export.
6. **Download within 4 days**: When it's ready, find it under Available downloads in the Export your information tool. Instagram gives you 4 days.

1. Open Your information and permissions
2. Tap Export your information, then Create export
3. Choose the profile and a destination
4. Pick what to include and tap Start export
5. Download within 4 days of the email
6. Then request deletion

*Export first. A profile scheduled for deletion can't be exported.*

### How long does the export take?

Instagram says it may take up to 30 days to email you an export link, and once the export is ready you have 4 days to download it. Exporting to a device needs enough free storage, and choosing high-quality video makes the files larger. If space is tight, export one type of information at a time or send it to an external service.

### What's in the file, and what isn't?

Instagram lists what you can export to a device: your Instagram activity, personal information, connections, logged information such as location and search history, security and login information, apps and websites off Instagram, preferences and ad information. Exporting to an external service can include the original photos and videos you shared. The export won't include things other people shared, like someone else's photo you're tagged in. Instagram's page on [deleting a chat](https://help.instagram.com/1467256816910908) adds that messages you've deleted aren't in the download file, and its page on [unsending messages](https://help.instagram.com/491370017690934) says the same for unsent ones.

> If you can't get into the account but still want a copy of your information, Instagram's export page says you can contact Instagram. Our guide to [contacting Instagram support](/blog/how-to-contact-instagram-support) lists the official routes.

## How do I delete my Instagram account on iPhone or Android?

Instagram gives identical steps for the iPhone and Android apps. Its pages note that it's gradually moving people to Meta Accounts, so your menu may say Accounts Center or Meta Account, and there are two versions of the Accounts Center menu. Open Accounts Center and look at the bottom of the screen: Instagram describes one layout that shows Manage accounts there, and an older one that shows Accounts.

### If you see Manage accounts at the bottom of Accounts Center

1. **Go to your profile**: Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
2. **Open the menu**: Tap Menu in the top right.
3. **Open your profiles**: Tap Accounts Center, then tap Profiles and personal details.
4. **Pick the account type**: Tap Manage next to the account type you want to delete, then tap Deactivation or deletion.
5. **Choose the account**: Tap the account you'd like to permanently delete.
6. **Delete**: Tap Delete account, then tap Continue, and follow the prompts to confirm.

Instagram app: Profile › Menu › Accounts Center › Profiles and personal details › Deactivation or deletion › Delete account

*Between Profiles and personal details and Deactivation or deletion, tap Manage next to the account type.*

Instagram, Deactivation or deletion:
- Deactivate account: Hide until you log back in
- Delete account: Permanent after 30 days (tap this)

*The two choices on this screen, as Instagram's help pages describe them. Delete account is the one to tap.*

### If you see Accounts at the bottom of Accounts Center

On the older layout, Instagram's steps are: tap Profile, tap Menu, tap Accounts Center at the top left, tap Personal details under Account Settings, tap Account ownership and control, then Deactivation or deletion. Choose the account or profile you want to delete, select Delete account, tap Continue, and follow the instructions to confirm.

### If your menu says Meta Account

Instagram's page on [deleting Edits](https://help.instagram.com/1236964017529717), which works by deleting the Instagram account, shows the same flow from Accounts Center: Profiles and personal details, Manage next to the account, Deactivation or deletion, the account, then Delete account and Continue. Instagram's other pages use the same Manage account step under Meta Account. If you see Meta Account where these steps say Accounts Center, tap it and look for the same names.

## How do I delete Instagram on a computer or mobile browser?

The website works just as well, and it's the easier route if you've already removed the app. Instagram's computer and mobile browser instructions are the same.

1. **Open Settings**: Log in at instagram.com, click More in the bottom left, then click Settings.
2. **Open Accounts Center**: Click Accounts Center, then click Profiles and personal details.
3. **Pick the account type**: Click Manage next to the account type you want to delete, then click Deactivation or deletion.
4. **Delete**: Click the account you'd like to permanently delete, click Delete account, then click Continue.

instagram.com: More › Settings › Accounts Center › Profiles and personal details › Deactivation or deletion › Delete account

*Instagram's mobile browser help gives the same clicks as the computer version.*

On the older Accounts layout, Instagram's computer steps are: More, Settings, Accounts Center at the top left, Personal details under Account Settings, Account ownership and control, Deactivation or deletion, then choose the account, select Delete account, click Continue and follow the instructions. If you mostly use Instagram in a browser, our guide on [using Instagram on a computer](/blog/can-you-post-on-instagram-from-desktop) covers the rest of the website.

## What happens after you request deletion?

Deletion isn't instant. Instagram's deletion page describes a 30-day period during which your content remains subject to Instagram's Terms of Use and Privacy Policy and isn't accessible to other people on Instagram. After those 30 days, the profile and all its information are permanently deleted and can't be retrieved. Behind the scenes, Instagram says the deletion process can take up to 90 days after it begins.

- Day 0: You request deletion; the profile stops being visible to others
- Days 1 to 30: You can cancel by logging back in; the window varies by region
- Day 30: The profile and all its information are permanently deleted
- Up to day 90: Instagram finishes the deletion process
- After 90 days: Copies may remain in disaster-recovery backups

*Instagram's published timeline for a deletion request.*

- 30 days: Until a deleted profile is permanent
- 90 days: Longest the deletion process can take
- 30 days: Longest wait for an export link
- 4 days: To download an export once it's ready

*The numbers that matter, all from Instagram's deletion and export pages.*

> The 30 days is the standard figure, but Instagram's page says the number of days you can cancel varies by region. If you're relying on the cancel window, don't wait until the last week.

## How do I cancel an Instagram account deletion?

Log back in before the deadline. Instagram's page on deleting Edits states it directly: you can cancel your Instagram account deletion request before the 30-day deadline by logging back into your Instagram account, and after you cancel, your content is visible again on Edits. Logging in is the whole process Instagram describes; there's no separate cancel form.

1. **Open Instagram**: Use the app or instagram.com.
2. **Log in to the account**: Use the same username, email address or phone number and password.
3. **Follow any on-screen prompts**: Instagram describes cancelling simply as logging back in before the deadline.
4. **Check your profile**: Open it and make sure your posts look the way you left them.

### What if I can't remember my password during the 30 days?

Reset it from the login screen with Forgot password? and log in with the new one. Our guide on [how to change or reset your Instagram password](/blog/how-to-change-instagram-password) walks through the email, phone and Facebook routes and what to do if the reset email doesn't arrive. Move quickly, because the deadline doesn't pause while you recover access.

### Can I cancel after the 30 days?

No. Instagram says that after 30 days the profile and all your information are permanently deleted and you won't be able to retrieve it. At that point your only option is to sign up again.

## What gets deleted, and what doesn't?

Here's what Instagram's pages say, item by item, and where they're silent.

| Item | What happens | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Profile, photos and videos | Permanently removed | Deletion page |
| Comments and likes you made | Permanently removed | Deletion page |
| Followers | Permanently removed | Deletion page |
| Information about your use of Edits | Deleted by deleting the Instagram account | Edits deletion page |
| Copies in backup storage | May remain after 90 days | Deletion page |
| Information kept for legal issues or harm prevention | May be kept | Deletion page |
| Messages in other people's inboxes | Not covered on the deletion page | None |
| Your username | Free to reuse if no one takes it | Deletion page |

### Your posts, comments, likes and followers

Instagram's deletion page lists them plainly: your profile, photos, videos, comments, likes and followers are permanently removed. During the 30 days before the deletion is final, the content isn't accessible to other people on Instagram.

### Your direct messages

Instagram's deletion page doesn't say what happens to messages you sent that sit in other people's inboxes, and we won't fill that gap with a guess. What Instagram does document gives you control before you delete. Deleting a conversation only removes it from your own inbox; it still appears for the other people in it. Unsending a message removes it for everyone in the chat, though they may already have seen it. If there are messages you'd rather not leave behind, unsend them before requesting deletion, and remember unsent messages won't be in your export.

### Backups and information Instagram may keep

Instagram's deletion page says copies of your content may remain after the 90 days in backup storage used to recover from a disaster, software error or other data loss. It also says Instagram may keep information for things like legal issues, terms violations or harm prevention, and points to its Privacy Policy for detail. So deletion removes your account from Instagram, but it isn't a promise that every copy everywhere is erased on day 30.

### Your username

After deletion, Instagram says you can sign up again with the same username, or add it to another profile, as long as no one else has taken it. There's a catch: if your profile was removed for violating the Community Standards, you may not be able to sign up again with the same username. Our guide on [checking if an Instagram username is available](/blog/how-to-check-if-an-instagram-username-is-available) explains how to tell if a handle is free.

## How do I delete one Instagram account when I have several?

Deleting one account doesn't delete the others. The Deactivation or deletion screen asks you to choose the account you'd like to delete, so the key is picking the right one. Instagram's page on [adding and switching between profiles](https://help.instagram.com/1696686240613595) says you can have up to 10 accounts logged in at one time, which is why that list can be long.

- Switch to the account you want to delete first, so you can see its profile and confirm it's the right one. Instagram's steps: tap your username at the top of your profile, then tap the account.
- In Accounts Center, tap Manage next to the account you mean, then Deactivation or deletion, then tap that account on the next screen.
- Check the username on the confirmation screen before you tap Delete account.
- If you also want to stop the remaining accounts from being linked to it, remove it from your Accounts Center (steps below).

### Removing an account from Accounts Center instead

Sometimes the goal isn't deletion but separation. Meta's help page on [managing accounts in Accounts Center](https://www.meta.com/help/accounts-center/589288436078759/) says to go to Accounts Center, tap Accounts or Manage accounts, then tap Remove next to the account. When you remove an account, any profiles associated with it are removed from that Accounts Center too. The account itself keeps existing; it just stops sharing connected experiences, like logging in across accounts, with the others.

### Extra profiles under the same account

Instagram now lets you create additional profiles for the same Instagram account, and its deletion steps ask you to choose the account or profile you want to delete, so pick the specific one you want gone. Instagram's page on adding profiles says a new profile can either be added to your Accounts Center or given its own password instead. If you're also removing accounts from Accounts Center as part of a cleanup, make sure every profile you're keeping still has a way to log in.

## Can I delete my Instagram account if I can't log in?

Not directly. Instagram's deletion page says that for security reasons it can't delete a profile for you; you need to be able to log in to request deletion. So the path is: get back in, then delete.

**Why can't you log in?**
- I forgot my password → Tap Forgot password? on the login screen and use the link sent to your email or phone.
- I forgot my username → Log in with your email address or phone number instead.
- Someone changed my details → Use the security email from Instagram or go to instagram.com/hacked.
- I lost the email and phone on the account → Reset through Facebook if the accounts are linked; otherwise Instagram can't restore access.

*Recover access first. Instagram can't process deletion for an account you can't log in to.*

### If you forgot your password or username

Instagram's page on [recovering your password](https://help.instagram.com/409847499070242) says to tap Forgot password? on the login screen, enter your username, email address or phone number, and use the link sent to your email or phone. Its [forgotten username page](https://help.instagram.com/1645522102409931) says you can log in with your email or phone number instead of the username. The full set of reset routes is in our [password reset guide](/blog/how-to-change-instagram-password).

### If someone else took over the account

Instagram's [hacked account page](https://help.instagram.com/149494825257596) says that if you got an email from security@mail.instagram.com saying your email address changed, you may be able to undo it by selecting secure my account in that message. Otherwise, request a login link, and if that fails, request a security code or support from a mobile device using a secure email only you can access. If someone has access or you can't log in, Instagram points to [instagram.com/hacked](https://www.instagram.com/hacked/) in a browser. You may be asked for a video selfie, which Instagram says is never shown on Instagram and is deleted within 30 days.

### If you lost access to the email and phone number

Instagram's page on [losing access to your email or phone](https://help.instagram.com/358911864194456) is blunt: if you can't access the email you registered with and didn't link your Instagram and Facebook accounts, Instagram is unable to give you access to the account. If they are linked, its page on [email addresses that can't be found](https://help.instagram.com/372185676193504) says you can tap Reset using Facebook after Forgot password?. Try your email provider's own recovery too.

### Deleting a teen's or a deceased person's account

Two cases have their own rules. Instagram's page on [deleting a teen's account](https://help.instagram.com/111341082356174) says teens can always delete their own account, and that in most regions neither parents nor Instagram can delete it, though some regions give parents that right through supervision features. For someone who has died, Instagram's page on [reporting a deceased person's profile](https://help.instagram.com/264154560391256) says verified immediate family members can request removal with proof such as a birth or death certificate, or anyone can request that the profile be memorialized with proof of death, such as a link to an obituary. Instagram says it can't provide login information for a memorialized profile.

## What happens to Threads, Edits, Facebook and Accounts Center?

Meta's apps share logins and settings, so it's fair to ask what else goes when Instagram does. Instagram's pages answer some of this clearly.

- Edits goes with Instagram. Instagram's Edits page says that to delete other information about your use of Edits, you have to delete your Instagram account, since Edits is part of Instagram. Your Edits video projects can be deleted on their own at any time.
- Threads is handled separately. Instagram's page on [deleting a Threads profile](https://help.instagram.com/313703828012423) says deleting Threads won't delete your Instagram or Facebook profile, and after a Threads profile is deleted you have to wait 90 days to sign up again with the same Instagram profile. Instagram's pages don't spell out what deleting Instagram does to a Threads profile you created with it, so if you want to keep Threads, check it before you confirm.
- Facebook isn't part of the Instagram steps. The Deactivation or deletion screen has you choose one account. Deleting Facebook is its own process, covered in our guide on [how to delete a Facebook account](/blog/how-to-delete-facebook-account).

### What Accounts Center and Meta Accounts are

Instagram's [Accounts Center page](https://help.instagram.com/1731078377046291) describes it as the place to manage connected experiences, like logging in across your accounts, for Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Meta accounts. Once accounts share an Accounts Center, Meta uses information across them for things like personalized ads and account suggestions. Meta's page on managing accounts in Accounts Center adds that you can only add one Facebook account to an Accounts Center. Instagram's help pages say it's gradually moving people to Meta Accounts, so the same settings may appear under a Meta Account menu instead.

Practically, this means two things for deletion. First, the Deactivation or deletion screen may list several accounts and profiles, so read carefully. Second, if your Threads profile was created through Instagram, Instagram's page on [changing your Threads password](https://help.instagram.com/1012605650899479) says that if you remove the creating Instagram profile from the same Meta Account as Threads, you'll be prompted to create a password for Threads. Set one so you don't lock yourself out of the profile you're keeping.

## Deleting an Instagram business or creator account

The steps are the same as for a personal account. What's different is everything attached to it, and Instagram's deletion page doesn't cover any of that. Work through this list first.

**Before deleting a business or creator account**
- [ ] Export your data and download the file
- [ ] Save your Insights figures somewhere outside Instagram
- [ ] Stop any running ads or promotions
- [ ] Check your Meta Verified subscription
- [ ] Remove people who help manage the account
- [ ] Cancel scheduled posts and disconnect tools
- [ ] Update links to your Instagram on your website and bio pages

*A business account is wired into ads, Pages and tools. Unwire it before deleting.*

Instagram's page on [connecting a professional account to a Facebook Page](https://help.instagram.com/402748553849926) explains what that connection does: ads that run from your Page, Instagram messages handled in Meta Business Suite, and cross-posting. It also notes that an active Meta Verified subscription may be canceled in some cases if you disconnect a subscribed Page and Instagram account. Instagram's pages don't describe what deleting does to an active subscription, so sort that out before you delete. If you track performance, write down your numbers first; our guide to [Instagram Insights](/blog/how-to-turn-on-instagram-insights) shows where they are.

### Scheduled posts and connected tools

Disconnect the account from every scheduler and app before you delete it, so nothing keeps trying to publish to an account that's gone. In PostMesh, cancel any posts scheduled for it in Posts or Calendar, then disconnect the account; each connected account counts toward your plan's limit on the [pricing page](/pricing), so this also frees the slot. [Instagram connections in PostMesh](/platform/instagram) publish through Instagram's API. For apps you logged into with Instagram, Instagram's page on [apps and websites](https://help.instagram.com/1144624522593085) gives the path: Profile, Menu, Website permissions, Apps and websites, Active, then Remove. If you're moving your audience somewhere else, our guide to [cross-posting to several platforms](/blog/how-to-cross-post-to-multiple-platforms) helps you set that up first.

### Switching to personal instead

If you want to stop being a business on Instagram but keep the account, Instagram's page on [switching back to personal](https://help.instagram.com/1717693135113805) gives the path: Profile, Menu, Account type and tools, Account type, Switch account type, Switch to personal account. You'll lose access to some Meta business tools like Meta Business Suite and Meta Ads Manager. The account itself stays; only its type changes.

## Can I get a deleted Instagram account back?

Only during the cancel window. After that, Instagram says the profile and its information are permanently deleted and can't be retrieved. Instagram's [disabled account page](https://help.instagram.com/366993040048856) adds that once an account is deleted there's no way to restore it, but you can create a new account with the same email address you used before. You can use your old username again if no one has taken it. Your old followers won't carry over; they were removed with the account.

### If you're not sure the account was deleted by you

If your account disappeared and you didn't request deletion, the same Instagram page lists the possibilities when there's no disabled message at login: a login issue, someone else gaining access, or deletion by you or someone with your password. If you do see a disabled message, Instagram took action on the account. Our guides to [suspended Instagram accounts](/blog/instagram-account-suspended) and [appealing a disabled account](/blog/instagram-account-disabled-appeal) cover the enforcement case.

### A safe order of operations

1. Make sure you can log in, and update the email and phone number if either is out of date.
2. Start an export and wait for the download email.
3. Download the file within 4 days and check it opens.
4. Unsend any messages you don't want left in other people's inboxes.
5. Cancel scheduled posts and disconnect the account from tools.
6. Request deletion in Accounts Center under Deactivation or deletion.
7. Note the date. Log back in before the deadline only if you change your mind.

Before you go, it's worth a look at what you're leaving: our guide to [seeing who doesn't follow you back](/blog/who-doesnt-follow-you-back-on-instagram) and the [best times to post on Instagram](/blog/best-time-to-post-on-instagram) can help if you decide a fresh start on a cleaner account suits you better than leaving entirely.

## Questions

### How long does it take Instagram to delete an account?

The profile is permanently deleted 30 days after your request. Instagram says the full deletion process can take up to 90 days, and copies may stay in backups after that.

### Can I delete my Instagram account instantly?

No. Every deletion request has a waiting period before it becomes permanent, though the content stops being visible to others as soon as you request it.

### How do I stop my Instagram account from being deleted?

Log back in before the deadline. Instagram says that cancels the deletion request, and your content becomes visible again.

### Can I delete Instagram from a computer?

Yes. Log in at instagram.com, click More, then Settings, then Accounts Center, and find Deactivation or deletion.

### Will deleting Instagram delete my Facebook account?

No. The Deactivation or deletion screen has you choose one account, and Facebook has its own deletion process.

### Can someone else delete my Instagram account?

Only by logging in to it. Instagram says it can't delete a profile for you, so anyone requesting deletion needs access to the account. If that happened without you, secure the account and log in to cancel.

### Can I download my Instagram data after deleting?

No. Instagram says the Export your information tool isn't available once the profile is deleted, and a profile scheduled for deletion can't be exported either.

### Can I use the same username after deleting Instagram?

Yes, if nobody else has claimed it. Profiles removed for violating the Community Standards may not be able to reuse the name.

### Do my messages disappear when I delete Instagram?

Instagram's deletion page doesn't say. If you want a message removed from someone's inbox, unsend it before you delete.

### Can a parent delete a teen's Instagram account?

In most regions, no. Instagram says teens can always delete their own account, and some regions give parents that right through supervision features.
