# How to get Discord on PS5: link your accounts and join voice chat

There's no Discord app to download on PS5. Instead, you link your Discord account to your PlayStation account, then join Discord voice chats from the Discord tab in the PS5's Game Base, or start a call in the Discord app on your phone or computer and transfer it to the console.

Discord on PS5 works differently from Discord on a phone or computer. You don't install anything on the console. Once your Discord and PlayStation accounts are linked, the PS5 can join Discord voice channels and direct voice chats, and your Discord friends can see what you're playing. This guide covers every step, using only Discord's [PlayStation Network Connection FAQ](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/4419534960919-Discord-and-PlayStation-Network-Connection-FAQ) and PlayStation's own support pages on [linking Discord](https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/subscriptions/link-psn-status-discord/) and [Discord voice chat on PS5](https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/games/discord-voice-chat/).

## The short answer

1. **Update your PS5**: Both Discord and PlayStation say the console needs the latest system software for Discord voice chat.
2. **Link your accounts**: On the PS5, press the PS button, go to Game Base › Discord and select Link Account. You can also link from the Discord app under User Settings › Connections, or on the PlayStation website.
3. **Join from the console**: Open the control center, select Game Base, then the Discord tab. Pick a server's voice channel or a direct voice chat and select Join.
4. **Or transfer a call**: Join a voice channel in the Discord app on your phone or computer, choose the option to join on PlayStation, pick your PS5 and select Transfer Voice.
5. **Talk**: Use your controller's built-in mic or a headset. The call lives on the voice chat card in the PS5's control center.

**Where are you starting from?**
- On the PS5 itself → Control center › Game Base › Discord tab. Pick a server voice channel or a direct voice chat and select Join.
- In the Discord app on your phone → Join the voice channel, swipe up for audio controls, tap Join on PlayStation, pick your PS5, then Transfer Voice.
- In Discord on a computer or browser → Join the channel, open the ellipsis menu or right-click the channel, then Transfer Voice to PlayStation.
- On a PS4 → Voice chat isn't available. You can still link accounts so friends see what you're playing.

*All three PS5 routes end in the same place: the voice chat card in the control center.*

## Does PS5 have Discord?

Yes and no. Discord's FAQ says plainly that Discord isn't a standalone app on PlayStation, so you won't find it in the PlayStation Store. What the PS5 has instead is a built-in Discord integration with two parts: voice chat, which only works on PS5, and game activity, which works on PS4 and PS5.

Voice chat means the console itself connects to a Discord voice channel or a direct voice chat, and you hear and talk to your Discord friends through your controller or headset. PlayStation's page describes it as a way to voice chat with players on other platforms, so your friends can be on a computer or a phone while you're on the PS5. Game activity means your Discord profile shows the PlayStation game you're playing, and optionally your PlayStation online ID so friends can add you.

| Feature | PS5 | PS4 | Where it's documented |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Join Discord voice channels on the console | Yes | No | Discord FAQ and PlayStation voice chat page |
| Start direct voice chats from the console | Yes | No | PlayStation voice chat page |
| Transfer a call from the Discord app | Yes | No | Discord FAQ: transferring is only available on PS5 |
| Show your current game on your Discord profile | Yes | Yes | Discord FAQ and PlayStation linking page |
| Show your PlayStation online ID on Discord | Yes | Yes | Discord FAQ and PlayStation linking page |
| A Discord app to download | No | No | Discord FAQ: not a standalone app |

So if you searched "is Discord on PS5" because a friend said they talk to you on Discord from their console, they're using this integration. If you were hoping to scroll text channels on your TV, that isn't something either company's pages describe. More on the limits further down.

## What do you need to use Discord on PS5?

The setup is short, but a few requirements catch people out. Check these before you start.

**Before you set up Discord on PS5**
- [ ] A PS5 on the latest system software
- [ ] A Discord account and an account for PlayStation
- [ ] The two accounts linked (or relinked, if you linked them before voice chat arrived)
- [ ] The Discord app on a phone or computer if you want to transfer calls
- [ ] Your age meets Discord's minimum where you live
- [ ] Family manager permission, if you use a child account

*Every item comes from Discord's or PlayStation's own support pages.*

### The latest PS5 system software

Discord's FAQ says your PS5 must be on the latest system version to use Discord voice chat, and PlayStation's voice chat page says the same. There's a second reason this matters now. Discord's article on [minimum client versions for voice chat](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/38025123604631-Minimum-Client-Version-Requirements-for-Voice-Chat) says that since March 2, 2026, every Discord voice and video call needs a client that supports end-to-end encryption, and that consoles generally need the latest system version to get that support. An out-of-date PS5 may simply fail to join.

### A Discord account that's old enough

Discord's [age requirements article](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/360040724612-Why-is-Discord-asking-for-my-birthday) says you must be at least 13 to use Discord, and in some countries as old as 16. If you don't have an account yet, create one on a phone or computer first. The PS5 can't sign you up.

### What you don't need

PlayStation's linking page says a PlayStation Plus membership isn't required to link Discord and share your activity, and its voice chat page doesn't list PlayStation Plus as a requirement either. You don't need Discord Nitro for any of the steps in this guide. PlayStation says the integration is available wherever both PlayStation and Discord services are available.

> Discord's FAQ answer on getting Discord on PlayStation mentions using both the Discord mobile app and the PlayStation App to set it up. The step-by-step sections on both companies' pages also show linking from the PS5 itself, from Discord on a computer, and from the PlayStation website, so use whichever device is in front of you.

## How do I link Discord to my PS5?

Linking connects your Discord account to your account for PlayStation. You only do it once, and it doesn't matter which device you use: the link is between the accounts, not the hardware. Pick one of these methods.

### Link on the PS5

1. **Open the control center**: Press the PS button on your controller.
2. **Go to the Discord tab**: Select Game Base, then Discord.
3. **Select Link Account**: Follow the on-screen instructions to sign in to Discord and approve the link.

PS5: PS button › Control center › Game Base › Discord › Link Account

*PlayStation's page gives this path for linking from the console.*

### Link in the Discord app

Discord says you can link from every version of the app: Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android and the web.

1. **Open Connections**: Go to User Settings › Connections. PlayStation's page adds a step: select Add to see the list of services.
2. **Choose PlayStation**: Select the PlayStation Network logo. A browser window opens so you can authorize the connection.
3. **Sign in to PlayStation**: Enter your PlayStation sign-in ID and password on PlayStation's login page and confirm that you want to connect the accounts.
4. **Look for the confirmation**: Discord shows a message saying your account for PlayStation Network is connected.

Discord app: User Settings › Connections › Add › PlayStation

*Sign in on PlayStation's own page when the browser window opens.*

Discord's [Account Connections FAQ](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/32330173689623-Account-Connections-on-Discord-FAQ) describes the same flow for every connected service. On mobile, it starts from your avatar in the bottom-right corner, then the cogwheel, then Connections and Add. Only sign in on the real PlayStation page that Discord opens, and never type your PlayStation password into a page someone sent you in a message.

### Link on the PlayStation website or the PlayStation App

On the web, sign in to PlayStation's Account Management page, go to Linked Services, select Discord and follow the on-screen instructions. PlayStation's general [linked services page](https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/subscriptions/link-social-streaming-service-playstation/) also describes linking from the PlayStation App: tap the settings icon at the top right of the home screen, select Linked Services, choose the service and select Link.

### Linked before voice chat existed? Relink

This is the most common reason the Discord voice options don't appear. Discord's FAQ says that if you linked your Discord and PlayStation accounts before Discord voice came to PS5, you have to relink them to turn on voice chat. The only exception is people who took part in the PS5 beta for Discord voice, who don't need to relink. To relink, unlink using the steps near the end of this guide, then link again.

### What linking shares, and how to control it

PlayStation's linking page lists what Discord users can see once you link: your PlayStation online ID on your Discord profile, the PlayStation games you're playing, and how long you've been playing. Discord adds two switches in the Connections tab so you decide what shows:

- Display on User Profile: shows your PlayStation Network online ID on your profile, next to any other connections you display.
- Display PlayStation Network as your status: shows the game you're playing on PS4 or PS5 as your activity.

For your game to show up, your PlayStation privacy settings have to allow it. Both companies say your Online Status and Now Playing settings must be set to Anyone. On a PS5, Discord gives this path: Settings › Users and Accounts › Privacy › View and Customize Your Privacy Settings, then set Who can see your online status and what you're currently playing to Anyone. PlayStation adds that if you appear offline, your status doesn't show on Discord either, and games you've hidden stay hidden there too.

PS5: Settings › Users and Accounts › Privacy › View and Customize Your Privacy Settings

*Set Who can see your online status and what you're currently playing to Anyone.*

## How do I join a Discord voice channel on PS5?

Once you're linked, you can join from the console without touching your phone. Discord's FAQ notes that joining Discord directly is only available on PS5.

### Join a server's voice channel

1. **Open Game Base**: Press the PS button to open the control center and select Game Base.
2. **Pick a server**: Go to the Discord tab and select a server. PlayStation says avatars next to a server's name mean someone is in one of its voice channels.
3. **Join the channel**: Select the voice channel you want and select Join.
4. **Manage the call**: Select the voice chat card in the control center whenever you want to see the call or change its settings.

### Start or join a direct voice chat

Direct voice chats are calls with people and groups you've chatted with before, like a DM call on Discord. From the control center, select Game Base, go to the Discord tab and select Direct Voice Chats. Choose the player or group and select Start Voice Chat. If they've already started the call, you'll see Join instead. Discord's FAQ mentions group messages too: from the Discord tab you can join a voice call in a group DM as well as a server channel.

### Join a server you're not in yet

Neither company's pages describe joining a new server or accepting an invite from the console, and the Discord tab lists servers you can select. If a friend sends you an invite, accept it in the Discord app first. Discord's article on [joining a server](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/360034842871-How-do-I-join-a-Server) says to press the plus icon at the bottom of the server list, choose Join a Server, paste the invite link and press Join Server. You can be in up to 100 servers, or 200 with Nitro.

## How do I transfer a Discord call from my phone to PS5?

Transferring is handy when you're already in a call on your phone and want to move it to the console when you sit down to play. Discord's FAQ gives these steps for the mobile app:

1. Join the voice channel in the Discord app
2. Swipe up to open the audio controls
3. Tap Join on PlayStation
4. Choose your PS5 and tap Transfer Voice
5. Open the voice chat card on your PS5

*The pop-up lists PS5 consoles tied to the PlayStation account you linked.*

After you tap Transfer Voice, a notification appears on the PS5 once it connects. PlayStation says you can select View Discord Voice Chat from that notification, or press the PS button and select the voice chat card in the control center. From the card, Discord's FAQ says, you can see everyone in the channel, manage your own audio settings, see other people's PlayStation accounts if they've linked them, and report participants.

If you don't see Join on PlayStation in the app, the accounts usually aren't linked for voice yet. Check the relinking section above, and make sure the console you want is the one signed in to the PlayStation account you linked.

## How do I transfer Discord voice from a computer?

The desktop app and Discord in a browser can send a call to your PS5 too. Discord's FAQ says transferring voice is only available to PS5, and asks you to make sure the console is updated first.

1. **Join the voice channel**: Join the channel you want on your computer as usual.
2. **Open the transfer option**: In the focused voice channel view, press the ellipsis (three dots), or right-click the voice channel name.
3. **Select Transfer Voice to PlayStation**: Discord's FAQ also refers to it as Transfer to PlayStation.
4. **Pick your console**: In the Transfer Voice to PlayStation pop-up, choose your PS5 and press Transfer Voice.

Your friends stay in the same channel the whole time. You're just moving your own audio from the computer to the console, which frees your computer for something else while you play.

## Can Discord turn on my PS5 from rest mode?

Yes, if you allow it. PlayStation's voice chat page explains that you can start a voice chat in the Discord app and wake a PS5 in rest mode at the same time. Turn this setting on first:

PS5: Settings › System › Power Saving › Features Available in Rest Mode › Enable Turning On PS5 from Network

*With this on, choosing to join on PlayStation in the Discord app wakes the console.*

After that, when you choose the option to join on PlayStation in the Discord app, your PS5 turns on. Select View Discord Voice Chat from the notification on the TV, or open the voice chat card in the control center, and you're in.

## How do I control a Discord call on PS5?

Everything about an active Discord call lives on the voice chat card in the control center. PlayStation's voice chat page lists what's on it:

| Control | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| Type of voice chat | Shows that you're in a Discord voice chat |
| Switch voice chats | Moves between your Discord chat and a game's voice chat; the card shows how many chats you're part of |
| Audio Balance | Balances the voice chat against game and other console audio |
| Mute All | Mutes all other members of the call |
| More › Voice Chat Settings | Adjusts your microphone level |
| More › Report | Sends a report about a member to Discord's moderation teams |
| More › Leave | Leaves the call |
| Member list | Shows each person's Discord name and avatar, plus a PlayStation symbol with their real name or online ID if they've linked |

Selecting a person in the member list lets you change their volume, view their PlayStation profile if they've linked accounts, and more. PlayStation lists extra details that appear when they apply: whether the person has PlayStation Plus, what game and console they're on, whether their mic is muted or they're talking, an Add Friend option if they're also on PlayStation, and Join Game if they're in a session you can join.

You talk using your controller's built-in mic or a headset. To mute yourself, PlayStation's [voice chat troubleshooting page](https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/games/ps4-voice-chat-issues/) says to press the mute button on your controller. When you chat on PS5 with Discord voice, Discord's FAQ says Discord's own policies and safety standards apply.

## What can't you do with Discord on PS5?

Knowing the limits saves a lot of searching for settings that don't exist. Based on what Discord's and PlayStation's pages describe:

- No app to install. Discord says it isn't a standalone app on PlayStation.
- No text chat on the console. Both companies describe voice chat and game activity only. Neither describes reading or sending Discord messages on the PS5, so keep the app open on your phone for text.
- No Discord voice on PS4. Discord's FAQ says transferring voice is only available on PS5; PS4 owners get game activity sharing.
- No party chat at the same time. PlayStation says you can't be in a Discord voice chat and a party voice chat at once, and Discord's FAQ says you can't stay in a PlayStation Party after transferring a call.
- No Share Screen or Share Play over Discord. PlayStation lists those as party voice chat features and says Discord voice chat is different.
- No Discord audio in your clips. PlayStation says Discord voice chat audio isn't recorded in PS5 captures or broadcasts.
- Joining new servers isn't described for the console. Accept invites in the Discord app first.

**Discord voice chat on PS5**
- Talk with friends on computers and phones
- Join server voice channels and direct voice chats
- Switch to a game's voice chat from the card
- Audio isn't recorded in captures or broadcasts

**PlayStation party chat**
- Voice chat with PlayStation friends
- Share Screen and Share Play are available
- Can't run at the same time as Discord voice
- Managed from the same voice chat card

*Pick one per session. PlayStation says you can't be in both at once.*

The capture rule matters if you post clips. Your PS5 recordings and broadcasts won't include your Discord call, so a funny moment in voice chat won't be in the video. If you share gameplay on YouTube or TikTok, our guides to [scheduling YouTube videos](/blog/how-to-schedule-youtube-videos) and [scheduling TikTok videos](/blog/how-to-schedule-tiktok-videos) cover getting those clips out on schedule, and [the best time to post on YouTube](/blog/best-time-to-post-on-youtube) helps you pick when.

## Why isn't Discord working on my PS5?

Most problems fall into a handful of patterns. Find yours in the table, then read the matching section below if you need more detail.

| What happens | Likely cause | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| No Join on PlayStation or Transfer Voice option | Accounts not linked, or linked before Discord voice came to PS5 | Link, or unlink and relink, your accounts |
| An error message when you transfer voice | Out-of-date console or a stale link | Update the PS5, reset and reconnect the accounts, then follow the error's instructions |
| Your PS5 isn't in the console list | The console isn't tied to the PlayStation account you linked | Sign in to the PS5 with the same PlayStation account you linked to Discord |
| You can't join calls at all | Old system software without end-to-end encryption support | Install the latest PS5 system software |
| You got dropped from your PlayStation party | Expected: you can't be in a party and Discord voice at once | Choose one chat per session |
| No sound, or friends can't hear you | Audio output, mic level or connection settings | Check Sound settings, the controller's mute button and your network |
| Your game doesn't show on Discord | Privacy settings, appearing offline, hidden games, or other activity taking priority | Set Online Status and Now Playing to Anyone and check the other causes below |
| Discord shows your old online ID | The change hasn't synced yet | Play a session on the console; if it still shows, reconnect the accounts |
| A child account can't use Discord | Family management settings or age and location limits | Ask the family manager to check Communication and User-Generated Content |

### Update the PS5 system software

Discord's FAQ says the first step for transfer errors is making sure the console is up to date. PlayStation's [system software page](https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/hardware/ps5/system-software/) gives the manual method:

1. **Open System Software**: Go to Settings › System, then select System Software › System Software Update and Settings.
2. **Update**: If Update Available appears, select Update System Software.
3. **If the download sticks**: Press the PS button, select Downloads/Uploads, highlight the update, select View Error Info, then Try Again.

If downloads keep failing, PlayStation's page also describes updating from a USB drive prepared on a computer, using only the official update file from PlayStation's site. Don't turn the console off while an update installs; PlayStation warns that interrupting it can damage the console.

### Reset the link and contact support

If you're up to date and the transfer still fails, Discord's FAQ says to reset and reconnect your PlayStation and Discord accounts, which means unlinking and linking again. If the instructions in the error message don't fix it, contact Discord's support team with a screenshot of the error so they can tell you what to do next.

### Fix audio after a transfer

Discord's FAQ points to PlayStation's voice chat troubleshooting page for audio problems after a transfer, and to Discord's own voice articles for problems before it. PlayStation's page suggests these checks on PS5:

- Output device: go to Settings › Sound › Audio Output and pick the right Output Device. Output to Headphones controls what you hear in headphones.
- Microphone: go to Settings › Sound › Microphone to choose your Input Device and use Adjust Microphone Level. Check the controller's mute button isn't on.
- Balance: use the slider on the voice chat card if voices are drowned out by the game.
- Connection: use a wired connection if you can, and if voice keeps dropping, turn the console and your modem and router off for five minutes before turning them back on.
- Router ports: if problems continue, PlayStation lists TCP ports 80, 443, 3478, 3479 and 3480, and UDP ports 3478, 3479 and 49152 to 65535, and suggests asking your internet provider how to open them.

If voice works on your phone but not after the transfer, the problem is on the console side. If it fails everywhere, check the Voice row on [discordstatus.com](https://discordstatus.com/) for an outage. Our guide to [Discord stuck on starting](/blog/discord-stuck-on-starting) covers the app-side fixes when Discord itself won't load on your computer.

### Get your game to show on Discord

If voice works but your Discord profile doesn't show what you're playing, check four things. Your PlayStation privacy settings must let Anyone see your online status and what you're playing. Appearing offline on PlayStation hides your status on Discord too. Games you've hidden on PlayStation stay hidden on Discord. And Discord's FAQ explains that activity on your computer takes priority: if you're streaming, listening to Spotify or have a game with rich presence open on your computer, the PlayStation status won't show.

## How do I unlink Discord from PS5?

Unlinking removes the connection between the accounts. You'd do it to relink for voice chat, to stop sharing your activity, or before restricting a child's account. There are three ways, and any one is enough.

PS5: Settings › Users and Accounts › Linked Services › Discord › Unlink Account

*Confirm with Yes, Unlink. Linked disappears from next to Discord.*

- On the PS5: go to Settings › Users and Accounts › Linked Services, choose Discord, select Unlink Account, then Yes, Unlink.
- In the Discord app: go to User Settings › Connections, select the X next to the PlayStation logo, then press Disconnect.
- On the web: sign in to PlayStation's Account Management, go to Linked Services and select Discord to unlink.

Discord's Account Connections FAQ says Discord Support can't remove a connection for you, so you need to be signed in to do it yourself. You can also unlink from the PlayStation side, on the console or the website.

## Can kids use Discord on PS5?

It depends on the child's age, where they live and what the family manager allows. Discord's minimum age is 13, or up to 16 in some countries. PlayStation's linking page says the feature may not be available to all child accounts, depending on age and location, and Discord's FAQ says game activity status isn't available for PlayStation child accounts. Discord's FAQ also says child accounts can use voice chat transfer, with parents controlling access.

PlayStation's page on [restricting child accounts from Discord](https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/subscriptions/restrict-discord-child-account/) explains the controls:

1. **Watch for the email**: If a child links an existing Discord account to PlayStation, the family manager receives an email notification.
2. **Unlink Discord**: In family management, unlink Discord in the child's Linked Services setting.
3. **Select Restrict**: Set the Communication and User-Generated Content setting to Restrict. This blocks Discord and other linked social features on the console.

PlayStation notes that only players with linked Discord accounts can use Discord on PlayStation, and that these settings don't affect Discord on other devices such as laptops, phones or tablets, so those need managing separately.

## What should you set up next?

Once voice works, a few small things make sessions smoother:

- Turn on Enable Turning On PS5 from Network, so joining a call from the Discord app on your phone wakes the console.
- Decide on party chat or Discord before a session starts, since you can't use both at once.
- Set your PlayStation privacy so friends see what you're playing, if you want them to join you.
- Keep the Discord app on your phone for text, links and invites, since the PS5 handles voice only.

If you run a gaming server, the PS5 crowd will mostly see your server through voice channels, so clear channel names help. Our free [Discord page name generator](/tools/discord-page-name-generator) brainstorms names for your server, and the [Discord banner resizer](/tools/discord-banner-resizer) sizes a server banner. For your own profile, the [Discord name generator](/tools/discord-name-generator), [Discord font generator](/tools/discord-font-generator) and [Discord bio generator](/tools/discord-bio-generator) give you a starting point, and [Discord bio ideas](/blog/discord-bio-ideas) has examples by style.

Posting a game night or tournament for members on every device? The [Discord announcement generator](/tools/discord-announcement-generator) or [Discord post generator](/tools/discord-post-generator) drafts it, the [Discord character counter](/tools/discord-character-counter) checks the length, and our guide to [Discord text formatting](/blog/discord-text-formatting) shows how to add headers, bold dates and timestamps that show up in each member's own time zone.

## Questions

### Can you download Discord on PS5?

No. Discord says it isn't a standalone app on PlayStation. You link your Discord account to your PlayStation account and use the voice chat built into the PS5 instead.

### Can you text chat on Discord with a PS5?

Neither Discord nor PlayStation describes text chat on the console. The PS5 integration covers voice chat and game activity, so use the Discord app on your phone for messages.

### Does Discord work on PS4?

Only for game activity. You can link accounts so Discord shows what you're playing on a PS4, but Discord says voice chat transfer is only available on PS5.

### Do I need PlayStation Plus for Discord on PS5?

PlayStation says a PlayStation Plus membership isn't required to link Discord and share your activity, and its voice chat page doesn't list it as a requirement.

### Why don't I see the option to join on PlayStation?

Usually because the accounts aren't linked, or were linked before Discord voice came to PS5. Discord says to relink in that case, and to keep the console on the latest system software.

### Can I be in a PlayStation party and a Discord call at the same time?

No. PlayStation says you can't be in a Discord voice chat and a party voice chat at once. Discord's FAQ says the same about PlayStation Parties after you transfer a call.

### Is Discord voice recorded in my PS5 clips?

No. PlayStation says Discord voice chat audio isn't recorded on PS5 captures or broadcasts.

### Can I use a headset for Discord on PS5?

Yes. PlayStation says you can talk with your controller's built-in mic or a headset, and you can pick the input device under Settings › Sound › Microphone.

### Can my child use Discord on PS5?

It depends on age, location and family settings. Discord requires users to be at least 13, and PlayStation lets family managers restrict Discord through the Communication and User-Generated Content setting.

### Does unlinking Discord delete anything?

Unlinking removes the connection between the accounts, so your PlayStation activity stops showing and PS5 voice stops working until you link again. Neither company's pages describe it deleting your Discord or PlayStation account.
