# How to hide followers on Instagram (and what you can't hide)

By PostMesh team. Published 2026-10-31; updated 2026-10-31.

Instagram has no setting that hides your Followers or Following list on its own. The closest you can get is a private account, which limits the private accounts in your lists to your approved followers, plus removing or blocking specific people, Close Friends and hiding your story from chosen accounts.

Most people who search for this want one of three things: to stop strangers seeing who follows them, to stop a particular person seeing who they follow, or to keep their activity quieter in general. Instagram handles each of those differently, and none of them with a single switch. This guide goes through what Instagram's own help pages say you can control, what stays visible no matter what you do, and how the rules change for public, private, business, creator and teen accounts. Every setting name and tap path below comes from Instagram Help, checked on October 31, 2026.

## The short answer

You can't hide your Followers or Following list while keeping the rest of your account as it is. Instagram's help pages on privacy, public and private accounts, and professional accounts describe no such setting, and none for hiding your follower and following counts either. What you can do is narrow who sees what. A private account limits your posts to approved followers and hides the private accounts in your lists from everyone else. Removing a follower or blocking someone takes them out of your lists. Close Friends and the hide-story setting control who sees what you share. Restrict keeps someone at a distance without them knowing.

**What are you trying to hide?**
- My lists from strangers → Switch to a private account. Public accounts in your lists stay visible to everyone.
- My lists from one person → Remove them as a follower on a private account, or block them.
- My stories from some people → Use Close Friends or hide your story from specific people.
- Contact with someone, quietly → Restrict them. Their comments and messages are hidden without a notification.

*Every option here is an Instagram setting. None of them hides your lists completely.*

| What you want | Tool | Works on | Is the other person notified? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Hide private accounts in your lists from non-followers | Private account | Personal accounts only | Not applicable |
| Take one person out of your Followers | Remove follower | Private accounts | No |
| Cut contact and leave both lists | Block | Any account | No |
| Hide your stories and live videos from someone | Hide your story | Any account | Not stated by Instagram |
| Share stories, notes and reels with a small group | Close Friends | Any account | No |
| Hide someone's comments and move their chats to requests | Restrict | Any account | Not stated by Instagram |
| Hide your follower list entirely | No such setting | Not offered | Not applicable |

## Can you hide your followers list on Instagram?

Not on its own. The Followers and Following lists on your profile are part of how Instagram works, and the only lever that changes who can open them is your account privacy. Even that lever is partial. Instagram's [public and private accounts page](https://help.instagram.com/517073653436611) splits the people in your lists into two groups and treats them differently.

| Who's in your lists | If your account is public | If your account is private |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Public accounts you follow, and public accounts that follow you | Anyone on Instagram and Threads can see them | Anyone on Instagram and Threads can see them |
| Private accounts you follow, and private accounts that follow you | Anyone on Instagram can see them | Only your followers can see them |

Read that table twice, because it answers most of the confusion around this topic. Going private does not hide the public accounts in your lists. If you follow a brand, a celebrity or a friend with a public account, anyone on Instagram and Threads can still see that connection. What going private changes is the private accounts: a non-follower looking at your profile won't see the private accounts you follow or the private accounts that follow you.

### What stays visible on every account

The same page says your profile information, which it lists as your profile photo, name, username and bio, can be seen by anyone on or off Instagram whether your account is public or private. It also notes that, for all accounts, people you follow or who follow you may be recommended to others when they view your account. Instagram's help pages don't describe any way to hide the follower and following counts on your profile.

### What Instagram doesn't offer

- A switch that hides your Followers list or Following list while your posts stay public.
- A way to hide your follower or following count.
- A way to hide the public accounts in your lists, even on a private account.
- A business or creator account that can be set to private.

> Apps and sites that claim to hide your lists, or to show someone else's hidden lists, aren't Instagram features. Instagram's help pages don't describe any tool that does either, so don't give such an app your Instagram login.

**Public account**
- Anyone can follow you
- Anyone on Instagram sees your posts
- Public accounts in your lists: visible on Instagram and Threads
- Private accounts in your lists: visible to anyone on Instagram

**Private account**
- Only people you approve can follow you
- Only followers see your posts
- Public accounts in your lists: still visible on Instagram and Threads
- Private accounts in your lists: visible to your followers only

## How do I make my Instagram account private?

This is the biggest single change you can make. Instagram's [make your account private page](https://help.instagram.com/448523408565555) gives the same steps for the iPhone and Android apps:

1. **Go to your profile**: Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
2. **Open the menu**: Tap Menu in the top right.
3. **Find Account privacy**: Below Who can see your content, tap Account privacy.
4. **Turn on Private account**: Tap the toggle next to Private account.
5. **Confirm**: Tap Switch to private.

Instagram: Profile › Menu › Account privacy › Private account › Switch to private

*Steps from Instagram Help for the iPhone and Android apps.*

On a computer, the same page says to click More in the bottom left, then Settings, then Account Privacy below Who can see your content, then the toggle next to Private account, and confirm with Switch to private. To go public again, turn the same toggle off.

Instagram, Who can see your content:
- Account privacy: Public or private (tap this)
- Close Friends: Who sees close-friends shares
- Blocked: Accounts you've blocked
- Story, live and location: Hide your story from people

*Rows Instagram's help pages place below Who can see your content. Your app may show more rows or a different order.*

### What happens to people who already follow you

Switching to private doesn't remove anyone. Instagram's public and private page says that if someone was already following you before you went private and you don't want them to see your posts, you can remove them from your followers list or block them. From then on, new follow requests appear in Activity, where you can approve or ignore them.

### Auto-confirm for people you follow

Private accounts get one extra setting. Per Instagram's [auto-confirm page](https://help.instagram.com/1765287610702547), you can automatically confirm follow requests from people you already follow: go to Menu, tap Follow and invite friends, and set Automatically confirm anyone you follow to On or Off. Instagram notifies you when a request is auto-confirmed. If you remove a follower and they ask to follow you again, Instagram won't auto-confirm them, so you can follow someone without letting them follow you back.

### Other things that change when you go private

- Your photos and videos stop appearing in search results, Explore, and hashtag and location pages.
- Links to your photos and videos stop appearing in search engine results.
- No one can download your reels, remix your videos or embed your posts off Instagram.
- Your followers can still share your posts in messages unless you change that setting, but only people who follow you can see what's shared.
- If you have a channel, it stays searchable and joinable, but posts you share there from a private profile are visible only to followers.

## How do I hide my following list without a private account?

This is one of the most searched versions of the question, so here's the honest answer: you can't. On a public account, Instagram's public and private page says anyone on Instagram can see the private accounts in your lists, and anyone on Instagram and Threads can see the public ones. There's no partial setting in between. What you can do is reduce what your lists reveal and how often your profile is surfaced to strangers.

### Turn off account suggestions on your profile

When someone taps Follow on your profile, Instagram can show them similar profiles they might want to follow, such as mutual friends. Its [account suggestions page](https://help.instagram.com/530450580417848) says you can turn this off only on a computer or mobile browser, not in the app: click your profile picture, click Edit profile, toggle off Show account suggestions on profiles, then click Submit. The trade-off, per the same page, is that you won't appear as a suggestion on other people's profiles either. This doesn't hide your lists, but it stops your profile from pointing visitors at the accounts around you.

### Hide who can see your likes

If what bothers you is people seeing what you engage with, Instagram has a separate control for that. Its [likes visibility page](https://help.instagram.com/963701761845404) says that under Menu, then Likes you've made, you can allow everyone, only people you follow, only your close friends, or no one to see what you like. The account that posted the content can always see that you liked it. You can also hide like counts on your own posts, as Instagram's [like counts page](https://help.instagram.com/113355287252104) explains, by tapping More options before you share and turning on Hide like counts on this post.

### Prune who you follow

The only sure way to keep an account out of your Following list is not to follow it. Instagram's [unfollow page](https://help.instagram.com/286340048138725) says to go to the profile, tap Following, then Unfollow, and that people aren't notified when you unfollow them. If you want to keep seeing someone without anyone else seeing the connection, there's no setting for that on a public account. If you're cleaning up your lists anyway, our guide to [finding who doesn't follow you back](/blog/who-doesnt-follow-you-back-on-instagram) shows how to compare both lists without risky apps.

> Making a public account private only hides the private accounts in your lists. If most of the accounts you follow are public, a private account won't change much about who can see your Following list.

## How do I remove a follower on Instagram?

Removing a follower takes one person out of your Followers list without blocking them. Instagram's [remove a follower page](https://help.instagram.com/413012278753813) says this works if your account is set to private.

1. Go to your profile
2. Tap Followers at the top
3. Tap X next to the follower
4. Tap Remove to confirm

*Removing followers works on private accounts, per Instagram Help. They aren't notified.*

Instagram says removed followers aren't notified. Once they're gone, they can't see your posts or the private accounts in your lists, because those are only visible to followers on a private account. They can ask to follow you again, and you can ignore the request.

### Removing spam and bot followers in bulk

Instagram filters accounts that are likely to be spam into a separate list. Per its [spam followers page](https://help.instagram.com/340413218365867), open your follower list and tap Potential spam to review them, or tap Remove all spam followers, then Remove, to clear them at once. Instagram says it won't tell them they've been removed. You can turn the filter on or off in Settings and privacy, then Followers, with the Filter spam followers toggle.

### What if my account is public?

Instagram's remove-a-follower page describes the feature for private accounts. On a public account, the option it points to is blocking, which also stops someone following you. Blocking is covered below.

## How do I hide my stories and posts from certain people?

Sometimes the real goal isn't hiding your lists but controlling who sees what you share. Instagram has two tools for this that work on public and private accounts alike.

### Hide your story from specific people

Instagram's [hide your story page](https://help.instagram.com/1177797265575168) says you can stop someone seeing anything you add to your story in future. Go to Menu, then below Who can see your content tap Story, live and location, tap Hide your story and live videos from specific people, select them and tap Done. You can also do it from your viewer list: tap Options next to their name, choose Hide your story, then Hide. The page is clear that this is different from blocking. It doesn't stop them seeing your profile and posts.

### Share with Close Friends only

A Close Friends list lets you share a post, note, reel or story with only the people on it. Instagram's [Close Friends page](https://help.instagram.com/476003390920140) puts it in Menu, below Who can see your content, then Close Friends. Tap Select next to people to add them and Done to save. People aren't notified when you add or remove them, and no one can request to be added. Members see a Close friends label on what you share with them and may see a green ring around your profile photo.

One detail is easy to miss. The Close Friends page says that if someone on your list likes, comments on or shares a reel you shared with close friends, others on the list can see their username and how they interacted. If you're not sure which formats suit a small audience, our guide to [Instagram posts, Stories and Reels](/blog/instagram-post-vs-story-vs-reel) explains how they differ.

### Stop people resharing what you post

On a public account, anyone can share your posts to their story unless you change it. Instagram's public and private page says you can turn this off in privacy settings. And if someone screenshots what you share, that's a separate question: our guide on [whether Instagram notifies people about screenshots](/blog/does-instagram-notify-when-you-screenshot) covers what Instagram does and doesn't tell you.

## Should I block, restrict or mute someone instead?

If one person is the problem, a person-level tool usually works better than changing your whole account. Here's what each one does according to Instagram's help pages.

| Tool | What it changes | Lists | Notified? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Block | They can't see your photos or videos or search for your account; their likes and comments are removed from your posts | The follow ends both ways | No |
| Restrict | Their new comments are visible only to them unless you approve; chats move to Message requests; they can't see when you're online or if you've read their messages | No change | Not stated |
| Mute | You stop seeing their posts, stories or messages | No change | No |
| Remove follower | They stop following you | Leaves your Followers | No |
| Hide story | They stop seeing your stories and live videos | No change | Not stated |

### Block

Blocking is the only tool that hides your account and your lists from a specific person on a public account. Instagram's unfollow page says a blocked person can't see your photos or videos or search for your account. Its [block page](https://help.instagram.com/454180787965921) says that when you block from the app you can also block other existing accounts they may have and new ones they create, except accounts of theirs you already follow, which you block one by one. To block from settings, go to Menu, then below Who can see your content tap Blocked, tap Add, search for the person and tap Block. From their profile, tap Options in the top right, then Block, and confirm.

Instagram's [page on what happens when you block](https://help.instagram.com/447613741984126) adds the details: their likes and comments are removed from your photos and videos and don't come back if you unblock, they can't mention or tag you, your chat stays in your inbox but neither of you can message the other, and messages they send while blocked aren't delivered later. One exception matters for privacy: blocked people can still see your likes and comments on posts shared by public accounts or accounts they follow.

### Restrict

Restrict is the quiet option. Per Instagram's [restrict page](https://help.instagram.com/2638385956221960), a restricted person's new comments on your posts are visible only to them until you approve one, you stop getting notifications about their comments, your chat moves to Message requests, and they can't see when you're online or whether you've read their messages. It doesn't hide your lists or posts from them. Our full guide to [what restrict means on Instagram](/blog/what-does-restrict-mean-on-instagram) covers every case.

### Mute

Muting only changes what you see. Instagram's [mute page](https://help.instagram.com/469042960409432) says it hides someone's posts in your Feed, their stories or their messages, and Instagram won't tell them. It doesn't hide anything of yours from them, so it isn't a privacy tool in this sense.

**Block**
- Hides your account from them
- Ends the follow both ways
- Removes their likes and comments
- Not notified

**Restrict**
- They still see your posts and lists
- Their comments need your approval
- Chats move to requests
- Hides your online status from them

**Mute**
- Hides them from you only
- They still see everything you share
- Follow stays as it is
- Not notified

## Can business and creator accounts hide followers?

No. Instagram's [professional accounts page](https://help.instagram.com/138925576505882) says professional accounts, which are either Business or Creator, can't be set to private. It also says that when you switch a personal account to professional, all pending follow requests are automatically accepted because the account goes public. The public and private page repeats it for business profiles: to make one private, first switch back to a personal account.

### How to switch back to a personal account

Instagram's [switch to personal page](https://help.instagram.com/1717693135113805) gives these steps for the iPhone and Android apps. You may also need to tap Settings after Menu.

1. **Open the menu**: Go to your profile and tap Menu in the top right.
2. **Open account settings**: Tap Account type and tools, then Account type.
3. **Switch**: Tap Switch account type, then Switch to personal account.
4. **Confirm**: Tap Switch to personal. You can then make the account private as described above.

### What you give up

The same page says that switching back means losing access to some Meta business tools, such as Meta Business Suite and Meta Ads Manager. If the account stays public, you keep access to your dashboard and insights. Once it's private, you'd be giving up the reach that professional accounts are built for: the professional accounts page lists features like a Contact button, a category label, Insights and posts that may appear in search engine results. For a creator or brand, that's usually too much to trade for hiding a list. Blocking or restricting the specific people who worry you is the gentler fix. If you rely on insights, our guide on [turning on Instagram Insights](/blog/how-to-turn-on-instagram-insights) explains what you'd keep and lose.

> If you publish with a scheduler, check its requirements before switching. PostMesh's [Instagram page](/platform/instagram) describes publishing photos and Reels to a professional account, so changing your account type could affect scheduled posts.

## What about teen accounts?

Teens get the private setting by default. Instagram's public and private page says accounts for people under 18 are private by default. Teens under 16 need a parent's or guardian's permission to switch to public, and teens aged 16 and 17 can switch without permission unless they've set up supervision. Instagram's [Teen Account settings page](https://help.instagram.com/455298907304715) adds that teens can always make settings more protective, for example going from public to private, without asking.

Parents should know one more thing. If a parent supervises a teen's account, Instagram's [Family Center page](https://help.instagram.com/690672769035051) says they can see which accounts the teen follows and which accounts follow them, and they're notified about new follower or following activity from the past week. So a supervised teen's lists aren't hidden from their parent, even on a private account.

## Why can people still see who I follow?

If you've gone private and someone can still see your lists, one of these usually explains it.

- The accounts they see are public. Instagram shows the public accounts in your lists to anyone on Instagram and Threads, even when your account is private.
- They follow you. On a private account, your followers can see the private accounts in your lists too. Remove them or block them if that's the problem.
- They're looking from Threads. Instagram's page says public accounts in your lists are visible on Threads as well as Instagram.
- They're a parent with supervision. Family Center shows a supervised teen's followers and following.
- They saw your lists before you changed the setting. Privacy settings change what people can see from now on, not what they already saw or saved.

### I can't find the Private account toggle

If Account privacy is missing or the switch won't stay on, you most likely have a business or creator account, which Instagram says can't be private. Switch to a personal account first. If you're a teen under 16 trying to go public, the switch needs a parent's or guardian's approval through supervision, per Instagram's teen pages.

### Removing a follower isn't an option

Instagram's remove-a-follower page describes the feature for private accounts. If your account is public, make it private first or block the person instead.

### Someone I blocked can still see my comments

That's expected. Instagram's blocking page says people you block can still see your likes and comments on posts shared by public accounts or accounts they follow. Blocking hides your account, not your activity on other people's posts.

## Which setting fits my situation?

The same goal can need different tools depending on your account type and who you're worried about. Here are four common situations, worked through with the settings above.

### You don't want an ex to see who you follow

On a public account, the only tool that stops one person seeing your lists is blocking, because a blocked person can't find or see your account. On a personal account you can instead switch to private and remove them as a follower. They then can't see your posts or the private accounts in your lists, but they can still see any public accounts you follow, and they could view your profile from another account. Blocking from the app lets you include their other existing and future accounts, which covers that gap.

### You're a creator and want your personal follows kept quiet

A creator account can't be private, so everyone can see who it follows, including the private accounts. Instagram has no setting that changes that. If you'd rather your friends' accounts weren't listed on a public profile, the option within Instagram's rules is not to follow them from that account. Following them from a separate personal account that you keep private does the job, at the cost of switching between accounts.

### A stranger keeps watching your stories

Start small: hide your story from them in Story, live and location. They won't see future stories or live videos, though they can still see your profile and posts. If you want them gone entirely, make your account private and remove them as a follower, or block them. Instagram's story viewer page says only you can see who's viewed your story, so checking your viewer list is the way to spot them.

### Your boss follows you and you want to post personal things

Removing a boss as a follower can be awkward. Close Friends is the softer tool: Instagram says you can share a post, note, reel or story with only the people on that list, and nobody is notified about who's on it. Anything you share to everyone still reaches every follower, so pick the audience each time you share. Restricting is another option if the concern is comments rather than viewing, since it doesn't change what they see.

**Is your account personal, business or creator?**
- Personal, public → Go private to hide private accounts in your lists, or block specific people.
- Personal, private → Remove followers you don't want and review your Close Friends.
- Business or creator → Can't go private. Block, restrict or hide your story from specific people.
- Teen account → Already private by default. Going public under 16 needs a parent's approval.

*Account rules from Instagram's help pages on public, private, professional and teen accounts.*

## How hiding followers affects scheduled posts

Going private changes who sees your posts, not whether you can post. Anything you publish after the switch, whether you post it yourself or schedule it, goes only to your followers. If you plan to keep a business or creator account public and use person-level tools instead, your publishing doesn't change at all. You can [schedule Instagram posts](/blog/how-to-schedule-instagram-posts) in the Instagram app, in Meta Business Suite or with a scheduler. PostMesh never asks for your Instagram password: you connect on Instagram's own login screen, and PostMesh doesn't read your followers. The details, including the account requirements, are on our [Instagram page](/platform/instagram), and plans are on the [pricing page](/pricing).

## What to do next: a privacy check in five minutes

Here's a short routine that uses only Instagram's own settings. Do it once, then again whenever your circle changes.

**Instagram privacy check**
- [ ] Decide public or private in Account privacy
- [ ] Remove followers you no longer want (private accounts)
- [ ] Clear the Potential spam folder
- [ ] Review your Close Friends list
- [ ] Hide your story from anyone who shouldn't see it
- [ ] Set who can see the likes you've made
- [ ] Turn off account suggestions on instagram.com
- [ ] Block or restrict anyone who worries you

*Every item is a setting from Instagram Help.*

## Questions

### Is there a setting to hide my followers on Instagram?

No. Instagram's help pages describe no switch that hides your Followers or Following list. A private account hides the private accounts in your lists from non-followers, but public accounts stay visible.

### Can I hide who I follow on Instagram without going private?

No. On a public account, anyone on Instagram can see the accounts you follow. You can unfollow accounts, turn off account suggestions on your profile, and hide the likes you make, but not the list itself.

### Does a private account hide my follower count?

Instagram's help pages don't describe any way to hide follower or following counts, on public or private accounts.

### Will someone know if I remove them as a follower?

No. Instagram says removed followers aren't notified. They can ask to follow you again, and you can ignore the request.

### Can I make my business account private?

Not as a business or creator account. Instagram says professional accounts can't be private, so switch back to a personal account first, which removes access to some Meta business tools.

### Can blocked people see my followers list?

Instagram says a blocked person can't see your photos or videos or search for your account, and the follow between you ends. They can still see your likes and comments on posts by public accounts or accounts they follow.

### Does hiding my story from someone hide my profile too?

No. Instagram says hiding your story is different from blocking and doesn't stop them seeing your profile and posts.

### Are teen accounts private automatically?

Yes. Instagram sets accounts for people under 18 to private by default, and teens under 16 need a parent's or guardian's permission to go public.

### Can someone see who I follow on Threads?

Yes, for public accounts. Instagram says the public accounts in your lists are visible to anyone on Instagram and Threads, whether your account is public or private.

### Can an app show me someone's hidden followers?

Instagram's help pages describe no way to see lists that someone's privacy settings hide. Don't give any app that claims to do it your Instagram login.
