# How to report a subreddit

Reddit has no button that reports a whole subreddit. Its help center says the best way is to report specific posts or comments from the community that show the problem, because every report carries the community's details with it, and there are separate routes for ban evasion, moderator misconduct and legal issues.

## The short answer

To report a subreddit, report the posts and comments in it that break the rules. Reddit's help page [How do I report a community?](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360058311612-How-do-I-report-a-community) says that reporting specific posts that are good examples of the problem is the best way to flag a community that may violate the Reddit Rules. When you report content, the community it came from, the person who posted it and other details about the post all become part of the report Reddit reviews.

A few problems have their own route, and some aren't for Reddit at all. Find your situation below.

| The problem | Where it goes | How |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Posts or comments in the subreddit break the Reddit Rules | Reddit | Report each example with the overflow menu, then Report |
| A banned or quarantined community has come back under a new name | Reddit | Send Reddit's ban evasion message with links |
| Moderators are breaking the Moderator Code of Conduct | Reddit | Submit Reddit's Code of Conduct report form |
| Moderators are breaking the Reddit Rules themselves | Reddit | Report their posts, comments or chat messages |
| Someone in the subreddit breaks only that community's rules | The moderators | Report the content, which also reaches the mods |
| You disagree with a removal or a ban from the subreddit | The moderators | Send mod mail |
| Content may be illegal where you live, or infringes your copyright or trademark | Reddit | Use the matching legal form |
| You just don't like the subreddit | Nobody | Mute it or leave it |

**What's wrong with the subreddit?**
- Its posts or comments break Reddit's rules → Report several clear examples, one report per post or comment.
- It's a banned community back under a new name → Send Reddit's ban evasion message with links, not screenshots.
- The moderators are abusing their role → Use the Moderator Code of Conduct form, or report their content if it breaks the Reddit Rules.
- I disagree with it or the mods were unfair to me → Message the mods, then mute or leave. Disagreement alone isn't a violation.

*Picking the right route matters more than reporting loudly.*

## Can you report an entire subreddit on Reddit?

Not as one item. There's no Report community button that sends the whole subreddit to Reddit for review. That's by design: Reddit reviews specific content, and the content is what proves a problem. A subreddit with a hostile name but rule-following posts gives reviewers nothing to act on, while a dozen reported posts that break the rules show exactly what's happening and where.

It still works at the community level. Reddit's [overview of content moderation and enforcement](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/23511059871252-Content-Moderation-Enforcement-and-Appeals) says communities that repeatedly violate sitewide rules may be warned or banned, Reddit may add restrictions such as NSFW tags or a quarantine, and moderators who fail to follow the Moderator Code of Conduct can be investigated and lose their moderation privileges. Your reports on individual posts are part of how Reddit sees that pattern.

### Reddit Rules versus community rules

It helps to know whose rules were broken. Reddit's page [What are Reddit's rules?](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360043503951-What-are-Reddit-s-rules) explains that every user and community follows the sitewide Reddit Rules, and each community can add its own rules, which its moderators define and enforce. Reddit's employees, called admins, enforce the sitewide rules. Moderators enforce their own community's rules and are also expected to remove and report content that breaks Reddit's rules.

So a post that's off-topic in r/somehobby breaks a community rule, and the moderators deal with it. A post that harasses someone breaks a Reddit Rule, and Reddit deals with it. Reddit's [post and comment reporting page](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360058309512-How-do-I-report-a-post-or-comment) says the report button covers both: things you think may violate the Reddit Rules or a community's rules.

## How do I report posts and comments in a subreddit?

Reporting works the same way in every community. Find a post or comment that shows the problem, open its menu and choose Report.

### On reddit.com

1. **Open the post**: Go to the post, or find the comment, that breaks the rules.
2. **Open the overflow menu**: Click the overflow menu (the three dots) to the right of the post, or under the comment.
3. **Select Report**: Choose Report, pick the rule it breaks, and submit.

Reddit on the web: Post or comment › Overflow menu › Report

*The same three clicks work for a post or a comment in any community.*

### In the Reddit app on iPhone or Android

Tap the overflow menu at the top right of the post, or underneath a comment, then select Report. Reddit's help center notes the menu icon looks slightly different on Android, but it's in the same place.

### What if none of the report reasons fit?

Reddit's page [What do I do if I don't see the issue I'm trying to report?](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360058314672-What-do-I-do-if-I-don-t-see-the-issue-I-m-trying-to-report) says to pick the issue closest to what you're seeing. It doesn't have to be an exact match. The same page reminds you that people will sometimes say things you disagree with, and that isn't the same as breaking a rule, so read the Reddit Rules if you're unsure.

### How do I add context to a report?

Most of the time you don't need to. Reddit's page on [running out of space](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360058757431-What-do-I-do-if-there-isn-t-enough-space-to-report-everything) says one report tied to a specific post, conversation or piece of content is the best way to flag a possible violation. If more information or links to other violations would help, add them in the Additional Information section before you submit. That's the place to mention that a post is one of many like it in the same subreddit.

### Reporting a user's profile

Sometimes the problem is a person who runs or fills the subreddit, and their profile itself breaks the rules. Reddit's page [How do I report a Reddit user?](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360043479851-How-do-I-report-a-Reddit-user) says you can report a profile's username, display name, avatar or profile image, banner image and bio. Go to their user page, open the overflow menu, select Report Profile, choose what you're reporting and which rule it breaks, then submit.

### Reporting chat and private messages

If members of a subreddit are sending you abusive messages, report the messages themselves. For a chat request you want to report, don't select Ignore, because that makes the message go away. Instead:

- In the app, open the chat, press and hold the message, then select Report.
- On reddit.com, open the full chat, hover over the message, then click the flag icon.
- For a private message in the app, open it in your inbox, tap the overflow menu next to it and select Report. On reddit.com, click Report underneath the message. Reddit says the message is deleted from your inbox once you report it.

After reporting, you can block the account, or turn off chat requests or private messages entirely from your Social interactions setting.

### Reporting an ad shown in a subreddit

Ads that appear in a community's feed aren't run by its moderators, so report them to Reddit directly. Reddit's page [How do I report an ad?](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/12731527501460-How-do-I-report-an-ad) says to open the overflow menu in the top right corner of the ad, select Report, choose a reason and submit, on reddit.com or in the app. Reporting an ad also hides that ad and future ads from the same advertiser account. If an ad doesn't break Reddit's ad policy and you simply don't want it, choose Hide instead, which hides that advertiser's ads for at least a year.

### Reporting an award on a post

Reddit's page [How do I report an award?](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360058311532-How-do-I-report-an-award) explains that you select the award icon on a post or comment, choose View all to open the Award Details page, then use the overflow menu next to the award and select Report. Those reports go to the community's moderators, who decide whether to approve or remove the award. If you think a post shouldn't receive awards at all, report the post itself and choose Contributor Program violation, which goes to Reddit's Safety team.

### For moderators: reporting threats in mod mail

If you moderate a subreddit and receive threatening messages through mod mail, Reddit's page on [reporting messages in mod mail](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/31047385514132-Reporting-messages-in-mod-mail) says to report the specific message. On reddit.com, open the message in mod mail and click Report above it. In the app, open the message and long press it, near the username and time stamp, then tap Report.

## How many posts should I report from a subreddit?

Enough to show the pattern, and no more than the ones that actually break the rules. Reddit asks for examples that are good examples of the issue, so pick the clearest ones: posts that plainly break a rule, recent ones, and ones from different users if the problem is the community as a whole rather than one person.

### Don't mass-report

Reporting has rules too. Reddit's policy on [Disrupting Communities](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360043066412-Disrupting-Communities) lists abuse of reporting channels as a violation, including sending a high volume of reports targeting non-violating content in a specific community or by a specific user, using reports to send abusive messages to moderators or admins, and encouraging others to do either. Organizing a group to report a subreddit you dislike can get your own account actioned.

### Low-quality reports can be hidden from moderators

Moderators can also turn on [Hidden reports](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/38097659478036-Hidden-reports), which moves the lowest quality user reports into a separate queue, judged by both sitewide and community signals. When a post has reports from community members and from outsiders, moderators see only the members' reports in their main queue. Careful, accurate reports are more likely to reach the people who can act on them.

### If someone is abusing reports against you

If you're a moderator, or a member receiving abusive report messages, Reddit's page on [report abuse](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/213099246-How-do-I-report-abuse-of-the-report-system) says to report the post or comment the abuse is tied to: open the overflow menu, select Report, choose Report abuse, add context and submit. Moderators can also stop free-form custom report messages in their community's settings.

## How do I report a subreddit for ban evasion?

This is the one case where you report the community itself. Reddit's page on [reporting suspected ban evasion](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360058315692-How-do-I-report-a-community-I-suspect-of-ban-evasion) says creating a new community, or repurposing an existing one, to serve the same purpose as a banned or quarantined community counts as ban evasion and is against Reddit's rules. Reddit asks you to report it with a message, which the help page links as a pre-addressed message to r/reddit.com with the subject Subreddit Ban Evasion.

1. Open the ban evasion link on Reddit's help page while logged in.
2. Name the suspected community and the banned or quarantined one it replaces.
3. Add links to posts, comments or messages that show the connection.
4. Leave out screenshots, which Reddit doesn't accept for this report.
5. Send the message.

*Links let Reddit check the evidence directly. Screenshots are too easy to fake.*

Reddit says it doesn't accept screenshots because they're too easy to manipulate. Good evidence is a link to a post announcing the new community as the replacement, the same moderators running both, or the same rule-breaking content reposted. Reddit's Disrupting Communities policy also has a [report webform](https://www.reddit.com/report) for potential vote manipulation and ban evasion by accounts.

## How do I report a subreddit's moderators?

Start by deciding which rule the moderators broke. Reddit's page on [disputes with moderators](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/205192355-How-can-I-resolve-a-dispute-with-a-moderator-or-moderator-team) says moderators are free to run their communities as they choose, as long as they don't break the Reddit Rules or the Moderator Code of Conduct. Strict rules, quick removals and bans you think are unfair aren't violations in themselves.

### If a moderator breaks the Reddit Rules

Report the moderator's posts, comments or chat messages the same way you'd report anyone else's. Being a moderator doesn't change how their content is reviewed.

### If moderators break the Moderator Code of Conduct

Reddit's page [Get to know Reddit's Moderator Code of Conduct](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/15484183932564-Get-to-know-Reddit-s-Moderator-Code-of-Conduct) says to submit a report through its linked form if you think a moderator or mod team is violating the Code. Moderators who want to appeal a Code of Conduct action use the same form and pick the appeal option from its menu. The Code has five rules, and Reddit's help center gives examples for each:

| Rule | What it expects | Examples of a violation |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1. Create, facilitate and maintain a stable community | Mods don't create, approve, enable or encourage rule-breaking content | Approving harassment, using styling to share rule-breaking content, adding banned mods back on other accounts |
| 2. Set appropriate and reasonable expectations | Members can predict what's allowed | Mislabeling mature content, falsely calling a fan community official, using mod mail to threaten users |
| 3. Respect your neighbors | The community isn't used to interfere with other communities or target users | Calls to flood another subreddit, a banner harassing another mod team |
| 4. Be active and engaged | Mods review reports and mod mail and keep the community running | Leaving reports unreviewed so rule-breaking posts stay up, sitting on communities without moderating |
| 5. Moderate with integrity | No mod actions in exchange for payment, gifts or favors | Charging to approve a post, selling a mod seat, negotiating the sale of a community |

> Reddit's Rule 3 page lists talking about being banned or having a post removed, such as saying a ban felt unfair, as typically permissible. Complaining about moderators isn't brigading. Telling others to go harass them is.

### When there's no violation

If the moderators aren't breaking either set of rules but you want to raise something, such as appealing your ban, Reddit points you to mod mail. If that doesn't resolve it, Reddit's suggestion is to take part in a similar community instead.

## When should I message the moderators instead of reporting to Reddit?

Message the moderators when the issue is about their community rather than Reddit's rules: a post that breaks a community rule they may have missed, a question about a rule, a removal you think was a mistake, or a ban you want to appeal. Reporting to Reddit is for sitewide rule violations, ban evasion and moderator misconduct.

**Report to Reddit**
- Content breaks the Reddit Rules
- A banned community returns under a new name
- Moderators break the Moderator Code of Conduct
- Illegal content or intellectual property claims

**Message the mods**
- Something breaks a community rule
- You have a question about the rules
- You think your post was removed by mistake
- You want to appeal a ban from the community

*Reddit enforces sitewide rules. Moderators enforce their own.*

### How do I send mod mail?

Reddit's page [How do I contact the moderators of a community?](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360043043792-How-do-I-contact-the-moderators-of-a-community) recommends mod mail over a direct chat with one moderator. On reddit.com, click Message the mods under the moderators section of the community's sidebar. In the app, open the community, tap the overflow menu at the top right and tap Message moderators.

Reddit on the web: Community sidebar › Moderators › Message the mods

*In the app, the same option is called Message moderators in the community's overflow menu.*

### What should I write?

Reddit asks for a clear and concise description, respectful wording and the details moderators need. In practice: link the post or comment, name the rule you think it breaks, and say what you're asking for. Mod replies arrive in your chat inbox with a MOD label. Reddit warns that a large community can take a while to answer, so give it time before following up.

### Appealing a ban from a subreddit

When moderators ban someone, Reddit's [banning and muting page](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/15484464549524-User-Management-banning-and-muting) explains that the user gets a message with the ban note, and a reply to that message lands in the community's Ban Appeals mod mail folder. Reply calmly, say which rule you understand you broke, and what you'll do differently. A community ban is the moderators' decision, so this is the channel that can reverse it. Reddit's page on [banned accounts](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360045734511-My-account-was-banned-for-violating-Reddit-Rules) separates this from a ban by Reddit itself, which comes with its own appeal instructions in your inbox.

### If the moderators never answer

Silence for a few weeks can mean the community has no active moderators. That has its own fixes, covered in the section on unmoderated subreddits below. If posts there break the Reddit Rules, report them anyway: Reddit's admins act on sitewide violations whether or not moderators are active.

## What happens after you report a subreddit?

Reddit's [enforcement overview](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/23511059871252-Content-Moderation-Enforcement-and-Appeals) describes the process. Reports go into a system that combines automated tools and human review. Automated tools help prioritize content flagged by users or by Reddit's own detection. When automated systems find content that likely violates the rules, it goes to safety teams for human review, or, if there's high confidence it breaks the rules, it's removed automatically. Reddit also uses large language models trained in-house to review certain categories of flagged content.

- You report: The post, its community, its author and other details go into the report
- Triage: Automated tools help prioritize what's been flagged
- Review: Safety teams review it, or clear violations are removed automatically
- Action: Reddit may remove the content, warn or ban the account, or restrict the community
- Notice: The account that posted removed content is told why and how to appeal

*Reddit doesn't publish how long each step takes.*

### What Reddit can do to posts and accounts

If content breaks the Reddit Rules, Reddit says it may remove it, warn the person who posted it, temporarily or permanently ban their accounts, restrict them from creating new accounts, or remove privileges and add restrictions. The choice depends on the type and severity of the violation and the user's history. For some violations the steps run from a warning to a 3-day ban, a 7-day ban and then a permanent ban. Other violations lead straight to a permanent ban.

### What Reddit can do to the subreddit

Communities that repeatedly violate sitewide rules may be warned or banned. Reddit may add NSFW tags where they're missing, or quarantine a community. Moderators who don't follow the Code of Conduct may be investigated and lose their moderation privileges.

### Will I find out what happened?

Reddit's enforcement page describes notifying the account that posted removed content, with the reason and instructions for appealing. The help pages I read don't promise that the person who reported will hear the outcome. Check whether the post is still up after a while, and report new examples if the problem continues.

### Can the decision be reversed?

Yes, by the person who posted. Reddit says users may appeal within six months of receiving the notice, and Reddit reverses its decision if it finds the first assessment was wrong. It may limit how often one decision can be appealed and stop processing appeals from people who repeatedly file unfounded ones.

## What does it mean when a subreddit is quarantined or banned?

These are the two community-level outcomes you're most likely to see after a subreddit has a pattern of problems.

### Quarantined communities

Reddit's [Quarantined Communities](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360043069012-Quarantined-Communities) page says admins may quarantine a community that isn't prohibited but that average users may find highly offensive or upsetting, or one dedicated to promoting hoaxes. A quarantined community shows a warning you must explicitly opt in to before viewing. It earns no revenue, doesn't appear in non-subscription feeds such as Popular, and is left out of search and recommendations. Its members still have to follow the Reddit Rules.

Moderators are told through mod mail, and they can appeal. Reddit expects an appeal to describe changes to how the community is moderated, such as more moderators, new rules or stronger automated moderation, with evidence that the changes have been enforced consistently for at least one month.

### Banned communities

Reddit's [Banned Communities](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360043068112-Banned-Communities) page is short: communities can be banned for violating the Reddit Rules, and banned communities are inaccessible to all users. If one reappears under a new name, that's the ban evasion report described above.

**Quarantined**
- Still viewable after a warning you opt in to
- Not in Popular, search or recommendations
- Earns no revenue
- Moderators can appeal with a month of evidence

**Banned**
- Inaccessible to all users
- Banned for violating the Reddit Rules
- Recreating it is ban evasion
- Report any copy with Reddit's ban evasion message

*A quarantine limits a community's reach. A ban removes it.*

## How do I report a subreddit for illegal content or copyright?

Most problems are best handled with the report button under the Reddit Rules. Legal claims, such as a copyright or trademark you own, or content that's illegal in your country, go through separate forms.

### Copyright and trademark

Reddit's [Copyright overview](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360043076292-Copyright-overview) explains its copyright policy, with examples such as posting someone else's photo without permission or sharing a download link to a copyrighted movie, and links a form for copyright owners to report violations. The [Trademark overview](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/25476777729556-Trademark-overview) does the same for trademarks, such as using a brand's logo to suggest an affiliation that doesn't exist. These forms are for the rights owner or someone acting for them. If the same work was also lifted from your accounts on other networks, each one has its own process; for Instagram, start with our guide on [how to contact Instagram support](/blog/how-to-contact-instagram-support).

### Content that's illegal in the EU or the UK

Reddit's [Digital Services Act page](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/23595536875796-Digital-Services-Act-DSA-Information-for-EU-users) links a form for reporting content you believe is illegal, or restricted for minors, in the European Union, and asks for clear information in English where possible. Its [UK Online Safety Act page](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/35409604240020-UK-Online-Safety-Act-Information-for-UK-users) links a matching form for the UK, and notes that most issues can be resolved faster by reporting under the Reddit Rules with the report button. Reddit has similar pages for other countries in its Country specific reporting procedures section.

> If a subreddit's content puts someone in danger, report it right away with the report button. Reddit's reporting pages also point to Crisis Text Line for anyone affected by what they've seen: in the U.S., text CHAT to 741741.

## What if the subreddit is unmoderated or abandoned?

Rule-breaking posts can pile up in a subreddit simply because nobody moderates it. Reddit's page [How do I know if a community is abandoned or unmoderated?](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/29187257932308-How-do-I-know-if-a-community-is-abandoned-or-unmoderated) gives four signs:

- No moderators listed in the sidebar, when you're logged in, not banned, and the community isn't private or restricted.
- No new posts or comments for several weeks or months.
- Posts that break the community's rules or the Reddit Rules staying up.
- No reply from the moderators to mod mail within a few weeks or so.

Report any content that breaks the Reddit Rules. Moderators being absent doesn't stop Reddit's admins from acting on sitewide violations, and Reddit's Code of Conduct expects moderators to be active, so a neglected community is part of the picture Reddit sees.

### Can I take over an abandoned subreddit?

Yes, through r/redditrequest. Reddit's page [How can I take over an inactive community?](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360043478471-How-can-I-take-over-an-inactive-community) sets out the process. Read r/redditrequest's rules and sidebar first.

1. Send mod mail to any listed moderators asking to join the team.
2. Wait five days. Skip this if there are no moderators or the community is banned.
3. Post a link post in r/redditrequest titled only r/ plus the community name, with the right flair.
4. Reply to u/request_bot with your reason and a link to your mod mail message.
5. Wait for a decision. Manual reviews can take up to a week.

*Requests without a reason, or without the mod mail link when there are mods, are denied.*

Reddit says requests without flair are removed, requests without a reason and a link to your mod mail are denied, and u/request_bot may approve or deny some requests automatically. If you do take over a community, the Moderator Code of Conduct applies to you from day one. A neglected subreddit often needs fresh styling too: our [Reddit banner resizer](/tools/reddit-banner-resizer) crops an image to fit, and the [social media image sizes](/blog/social-media-image-sizes) guide lists the dimensions for other networks you may promote it on. If you'll be posting regular announcements or threads there, [PostMesh can schedule Reddit posts](/platform/reddit) to your community through Reddit's official API, with flair, up to 30 days ahead, and our roundup of [free social media schedulers](/blog/best-free-social-media-schedulers) compares other options.

## How do I stop seeing a subreddit without reporting it?

If a subreddit annoys or upsets you but doesn't break any rules, reporting it won't do anything. Reddit's page [What should I do if I see something I don't like on Reddit?](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360043066512-What-should-I-do-if-I-see-something-I-don-t-like-on-Reddit) says users may post potentially objectionable content as long as it doesn't break the Reddit Rules, and suggests moving to a different community. These tools take it out of your view.

### Mute the community

Reddit's [community muting page](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/9810475384084-What-is-community-muting) says muting removes a community from your notifications, Home feed, recommendations and Popular feed. You can mute up to 1,000 communities.

1. **From the community page**: Visit the community, open the overflow menu and select Mute r/ followed by the community name. This works on reddit.com and in the app.
2. **From a recommendation**: Open the overflow menu on a recommended post and select Show fewer posts like this.
3. **From your settings on reddit.com**: Go to your Preferences and scroll to Muted communities to manage the list.
4. **From your settings in the app**: Go to Settings, tap Account settings for your username, then Manage muted communities in the safety section.

Reddit notes that turning notifications back on for a muted community removes it from your muted list. Muting only changes what you see. If the community also breaks Reddit's rules on harassment, threats or hate, Reddit asks you to report that content as well.

### Leave the community

If you joined it, leaving takes it off your list. Reddit's [join or leave page](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/28621027395220-How-to-join-or-leave-a-community) says that on reddit.com you open the community and click Joined at the top right to leave.

### Block the people involved

Reddit's [blocking page](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/4413520308372-How-does-blocking-work) explains that people you block can't see your profile, and your posts and comments look deleted to them. Their content is hidden or collapsed for you, and neither of you can reply, vote or message the other. Group chats you're both already in are an exception. You can block up to 1,000 users.

## How do I stay safe while reporting?

Reporting a hostile community can sometimes lead to messages pretending to be from Reddit. Reddit's page [How do I know if a message from Reddit is official?](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360045734831-How-do-I-know-if-a-message-from-Reddit-is-official) gives the signs of a real one:

- Official notices about your account arrive in your Reddit inbox from u/reddit. Admin usernames show in red with a Snoo icon or a red [A].
- Emails come from @reddit.com, @redditmail.com or @redditforcommunity.com addresses, and their links point back to reddit.com.
- Reddit never asks for your password or two-factor codes, and won't ask you in a private message to change your email address.
- Reddit only contacts you about your account on Reddit or by email. Ignore messages about your Reddit account on any other platform, and report them there.

If you're being harassed by members of a subreddit, Reddit's page [What should I do if I'm being harassed?](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360058754391-What-should-I-do-if-I-m-being-harassed) says reporting the specific post, comment or chat message is the best way to tell Reddit, and you can block the accounts as well.

## Before you submit: a reporting checklist

**Report a subreddit the way Reddit asks**
- [ ] Decide whether a Reddit Rule or only a community rule is broken
- [ ] Pick the clearest examples, not every post
- [ ] Report each example with the overflow menu, then Report
- [ ] Choose the closest reason and add context only if it helps
- [ ] Use links, not screenshots, for ban evasion
- [ ] Use mod mail for removals, bans and community rule questions
- [ ] Mute or leave communities you simply dislike
- [ ] Never organize mass reports

*Accurate reports are the ones that lead somewhere.*

If you're on the other side of this, with posts removed in a community you care about, the fix is usually about that community's rules rather than a report. Our guide to [Reddit karma requirements](/blog/reddit-karma-requirements) explains the hidden karma and account age checks that block new posters, and how to find a community's rules before you post. Posting the same thing to many subreddits at once can also look like spam, so read whether [cross-posting hurts engagement](/blog/does-cross-posting-hurt-engagement) and how to [adapt one post for several places](/blog/how-to-cross-post-to-multiple-platforms). For title and body limits, the [Reddit title counter](/tools/reddit-title-counter) and [Reddit post character counter](/tools/reddit-post-character-counter) check a draft for you, and our [social media character limits](/blog/social-media-character-limits) guide covers every network.

Dealing with a similar problem elsewhere? See how to run an [X shadowban test](/blog/x-shadowban-test) if your posts seem hidden on X, or [why your Facebook post isn't posting](/blog/why-cant-i-post-on-facebook) for Facebook's restrictions and group rules.

## Questions

### Is there a button to report a whole subreddit?

No. Reddit asks you to report specific posts or comments from the community, and each report includes the community's details. Ban evasion is the exception, with its own message to Reddit.

### Does reporting a subreddit get it banned?

Not on its own. Reddit can warn, quarantine or ban a community that repeatedly breaks sitewide rules, and reports of its content are one of the signals Reddit uses.

### How many reports does it take to get a post removed?

Reddit reviews content against its rules rather than counting reports, and mass-reporting non-violating content is itself against the rules. One accurate report is enough to start a review.

### Do subreddit moderators see my reports?

Reports go to moderators' queues as well as to Reddit when relevant. Moderators can hide low-quality reports in a separate queue, so accurate reports matter.

### Can I report a subreddit if I'm not a member?

Yes. You can report posts and comments you can see in any community. Reddit's Hidden reports feature lets moderators separate reports from non-members, so stick to clear violations.

### How do I report a subreddit moderator?

Report their content if it breaks the Reddit Rules. If they break the Moderator Code of Conduct, use the report form linked from Reddit's Code of Conduct help page.

### How long does Reddit take to review a report?

Reddit doesn't publish a time. It says it uses automated tools to prioritize flagged content and acts in a timely manner.

### What can I do if I was banned from a subreddit unfairly?

Reply to the ban message or send mod mail, which reaches the community's Ban Appeals folder. A community ban is the moderators' decision, so Reddit won't overturn it unless the mods broke Reddit's rules.

### Can I report a subreddit for copying a banned one?

Yes. That's ban evasion. Send Reddit the ban evasion message linked from its help page, with links that show the connection rather than screenshots.

### What's the difference between muting and reporting a subreddit?

Muting only hides the community from your feeds and notifications. Reporting asks Reddit or the moderators to review content that breaks the rules.
