# How to schedule a tweet on X: every way, step by step

Canonical: https://postmesh.app/blog/how-to-schedule-tweets

By PostMesh team. Published 2026-10-26; updated 2026-10-31.

On x.com, write your post, select the calendar icon at the bottom of the compose box, pick a date and time and select Confirm; scheduled posts wait under Unsent posts. X Pro (Premium+) and Media Studio (Premium and Premium+) can schedule too, and a scheduler such as PostMesh sends text and image posts to X up to 30 days ahead.

X has more than one place to schedule a post, and which one you can use depends on where you write and what you pay for. The compose box on x.com has a scheduler. X Pro, the multi-column version of X, has one for Premium+ subscribers. Media Studio, X's media library, has one for Premium and Premium+. And third-party schedulers post through X's API. This guide covers each one from X's own help pages, then the limits that catch people out, how schedulers work, and what to do when a scheduled post doesn't appear.

> Steps and limits below come from X's Help Center and developer docs. Several of X's help pages are cited from dated Wayback Machine copies, listed in the sources at the end. If a button has moved since, the goal of each step stays the same.

## The short answer

For an occasional post from a computer, use the calendar icon in the x.com compose box. If you pay for Premium+ and manage several accounts, X Pro gives you a Scheduled column to see everything queued. If your post is built around a video or image you've uploaded to Media Studio, schedule it from there. If the same update also goes to LinkedIn, Threads, Instagram or other networks, a scheduler saves you posting it four times.

**How do you want to schedule your post?**
- One post now and then, from a computer → x.com: calendar icon in the compose box, then Confirm. Find it later under Unsent posts.
- Several X accounts, with Premium+ → X Pro: connect the accounts and add a Scheduled column to see what's queued.
- A video or image from your library, with Premium → Media Studio: post button under the media, then Schedule. One scheduled post at a time per account.
- The same update on X and other networks → A scheduler such as PostMesh: text or one image to X, checked against the 280-character limit first.

## How do I schedule a tweet on x.com?

X's [How to Post](https://help.x.com/en/using-x/how-to-post) page covers scheduling in its instructions for x.com. You type a post into the compose box at the top of your Home timeline, or select the Post button in the navigation bar. A post can carry up to 280 characters and up to 4 photos, a GIF or a video. Instead of posting right away, you set a time first.

1. **Open the compose box**: Use the box at the top of your Home timeline, or select the Post button in the navigation bar.
2. **Write the post**: Up to 280 characters. Add up to 4 photos, a GIF or a video if you want media.
3. **Select the calendar icon**: It's at the bottom of the compose box.
4. **Pick the date and time**: Make your schedule selections, then select Confirm.
5. **Finish sending it**: Send the post from the compose box. It waits until the time you picked instead of going out now.
6. **Check it's queued**: Select Unsent posts from the compose box. Your drafts and scheduled posts are both there.

X on the web: Compose box › Calendar icon › Date and time › Confirm

*Scheduled posts and drafts are both kept under Unsent posts in the compose box.*

### Where do my scheduled tweets go?

They sit under Unsent posts in the compose box, together with drafts. That's also where you go to change one. X's Media Studio FAQ notes that scheduled posts can be modified on x.com, so the web is the place to fix a typo or move the time before it goes out. If you'd rather not post something at all, open it from Unsent posts and remove it.

### How do I save a draft instead?

On x.com, select the X icon in the top left of the compose box, then select Save. A draft has no time attached. It stays under Unsent posts until you open it and post or schedule it. Use drafts for posts you haven't finished, and scheduling for posts you have.

### Can I schedule tweets from the X app on my phone?

X's How to Post page gives separate steps for iPhone, Android and the web, and only the web steps mention the calendar icon and Unsent posts. If you don't see a scheduling option in the app, that matches X's own instructions. Schedule from x.com in a browser, or from X Pro or Media Studio, which are also web tools.

## How do I schedule posts in X Pro?

X Pro shows several timelines side by side and, in X's words on its [How to use X Pro](https://help.x.com/en/using-x/how-to-use-x-pro) page, lets you manage multiple accounts and schedule posts for the future. X's [Premium page](https://help.x.com/en/using-x/x-premium) lists access to X Pro under Premium+ only, so Basic and Premium subscribers won't have it.

### Connect the accounts you post for

1. **Sign in to X Pro**: Go to pro.x.com and log in with your X account. X recommends an account you don't share with anyone else.
2. **Open Manage accounts**: Click your profile photo in the navigation bar, then Manage accounts.
3. **Add the account**: Click Add an existing account and sign in to it in the new window.
4. **Pick the account when you post**: When you compose, confirm you're logged in to the account you want to post from.

If several people manage one account, X points teams to its Delegate feature rather than sharing a password. That keeps each person on their own login while they post for the shared account.

### See everything that's queued

X Pro works in columns. From the navigation bar, select Add column, then pick the type you want. One of the column types is Scheduled, which X describes simply as your scheduled posts. Keep a Scheduled column next to your Home and Notifications columns and you'll see the week ahead without opening anything. To reorder columns, drag the six-dot icon at the top of a column; to remove one, click the filter icon in its header and choose Delete column.

> X's X Pro page doesn't spell out the click-by-click scheduling steps. The compose box is the one you use to post, so look for the same scheduling control you'd use on x.com.

## How do I schedule a post from Media Studio?

Media Studio, at studio.x.com, is a library of every image, GIF and video you've posted or uploaded. X's Premium page says it's included with Premium and Premium+, and not with Basic. It suits video-first accounts: upload once, add a title and description, and schedule the post from the media itself. X's [Media Studio Library](https://help.x.com/en/using-x/media-studio-faqs) page gives these steps:

1. **Choose the media**: In your Library, click the post button underneath the media thumbnail.
2. **Write the post**: Enter your post text, up to 280 characters.
3. **Open the date picker**: Click the Schedule button at the bottom of the dialog box.
4. **Pick a date and exact time**: The picker shows times in your current time zone.
5. **Save it**: Click the post button to save the scheduled post. Media Studio posts it at the time you chose.

1. Click the post button under the media thumbnail
2. Write up to 280 characters
3. Click Schedule at the bottom of the dialog
4. Pick a date and exact time in your time zone
5. Click the post button to save it

*From X's Media Studio Library help page. Premium and Premium+ only.*

### What Media Studio can and can't do

- One at a time: you can schedule only one post at a time per account.
- Several accounts at once: if you have access to other accounts, you can send the same scheduled post from any or all of them, picked from the dropdown next to your username.
- No threads: Media Studio doesn't support a thread of several posts.
- No editing: a scheduled post can't be edited in Media Studio. Delete it and create a new one. Editing it on x.com instead creates a new, lower-quality copy of the media and loses the metadata you set in Media Studio.
- Ads accounts: if you have an X Ads account, X says you can edit scheduled posts from that dashboard under Creatives, then posts.
- Deleting: click Schedule in the top navigation bar to see every scheduled post, then the delete icon next to the one you want gone.

### Media Studio's file limits

| Media | Limit in Media Studio |
| --- | --- |
| Video | MP4 or MOV, up to 8 GB. Up to about 3 hours for Premium subscribers, at 720p beyond 2 hours. |
| Image | JPG or PNG, up to 20 MB and 8,192 by 8,192 pixels. |
| GIF | Up to 15 MB and 2,048 by 2,048 pixels. |
| Processing | Up to 30 minutes. If a file doesn't finish in that time, the upload fails. |

X says these specs apply to Media Studio only, not to posts made through the developer API or the regular apps. If an upload sticks at 5 percent, X suggests re-exporting a .mov file as .mp4, which usually processes faster.

## Can I schedule tweets for several accounts?

Yes, in three of the four tools, each in its own way. Which one fits depends on whether you want one post on several accounts or different posts on each.

- X Pro: connect each account through Manage accounts, confirm which account you're posting from before you send, and keep a Scheduled column to see what's queued. It needs Premium+.
- Media Studio: if you have access to post for other usernames, the dropdown next to your username lets you pick several, and the same scheduled post goes out from all of them. You still get one scheduled post at a time per account.
- x.com: the compose box posts from the account you're signed in to. Switch accounts to schedule for another one.
- PostMesh: pick every X account you want in New post. Each one counts toward your plan's connected-account limit: 10 on Creator, 50 on Growth and unlimited on Pro.

Be careful with identical text on several accounts. X rejects a post as a duplicate when it's too similar to one already posted on that account. If you run a brand account and a personal one, give each its own wording. The guide to [cross-posting and engagement](/blog/does-cross-posting-hurt-engagement) covers what X's policies say about the same content on several accounts.

## What are the limits of scheduling on X?

Scheduling doesn't change what a post can contain. The same counting rules, media rules and subscription features apply. These are the limits most likely to matter when you set up a post for later.

| Question | What X's pages say |
| --- | --- |
| How far ahead? | None of the X pages used here state a maximum for x.com, X Pro or Media Studio. |
| How many? | Media Studio stops at 1,000 draft or scheduled posts per account, with a rate limit error. |
| Threads? | Not in Media Studio. The x.com and X Pro pages don't describe scheduling threads. |
| Editing before it goes out? | Yes on x.com; not in Media Studio. The X Pro page doesn't say. |
| Editing after it goes out? | Only with X Premium's Edit post: up to 5 edits in the first hour, from the device you sent it from. |
| Time zone? | Media Studio shows your current time zone. The x.com page doesn't say. |
| Duplicates? | A post too similar to one already posted fails with a duplicate error. |

### How X counts the 280 characters

X's developer docs on [counting characters](https://docs.x.com/fundamentals/counting-characters) explain that the count is weighted. Most Latin letters and punctuation count as 1. Every emoji counts as 2, however complex it is. Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as 2, so a post in those scripts tops out around 140 characters. Every link is wrapped in X's t.co shortener and counts as 23 characters, whatever its real length. Media you attach counts as 0, and the @mentions X fills in at the start of a reply don't count.

So a post can look short and still fail. A sentence with four emoji and two links uses 54 characters on those six items alone. Before you schedule, paste it into a [tweet character counter](/tools/twitter-character-counter), or check it against every network at once with the [post checker](/tools/post-checker). The [social media character limits](/blog/social-media-character-limits) guide shows how the other networks count too.

### What about longer posts?

X's Premium page says subscribers can write longer posts, up to 25,000 characters, and everyone can read them. That's a feature of X's own apps. If you schedule through a third-party tool, check its limit, since it may stick to the standard 280. PostMesh checks 280 for every X account, paid or not, because that's the limit on the API endpoint it posts through. Its check counts each character once, which is looser than X's weighting for emoji, so leave a few characters spare when a post uses several.

### Media in a post

X's How to Post page allows up to 4 photos, a GIF or a video in a post, with up to 4 media items in total on mobile. X's developer [media best practices](https://docs.x.com/x-api/media/quickstart/best-practices) set images at 5 MB or less and animated GIFs at 15 MB or less, in JPG, PNG, GIF or WebP. For video, the same page lists up to 20 minutes and 8 GB for default accounts, and up to 125 minutes and 16 GB for Premium or verified accounts. If you're sizing an image, the [social media image sizes](/blog/social-media-image-sizes) guide lists X's shapes next to the other networks.

### Editing a post after it goes out

X's [Edit post](https://help.x.com/en/using-x/edit-post) page says Premium subscribers get a 1-hour window after a post or Quote is sent, with up to 5 edits in that hour. You can only edit from the device you sent the post from: a post sent from x.com is edited on x.com. A post that a scheduling tool sent wasn't sent from your phone or browser, so don't count on Edit post to fix it. Read the post carefully before you schedule it, and if something is wrong once it's live, delete it and post a corrected version.

## How do third-party tweet schedulers work?

A third-party scheduler stores your post and, at the time you picked, publishes it through X's API using the access you granted when you connected. You sign in on X's own authorization screen and approve the app, so a well-built tool never sees your password. X shows where each post came from: its How to Post page explains that a post's details can show a source label such as X for iPhone or X for Web, and that a third-party client name means the post came from a non-X application.

### What to look for in a scheduler

- Sign-in through X itself, not a box asking for your X password.
- A clear statement of what it can post to X: text, images, video, threads, polls. Many tools can't do all of them.
- Its character limit for X, especially if you're used to Premium's longer posts.
- A result for every post afterward, so a failed post doesn't go unnoticed.
- A sensible way to change a scheduled post, and a time zone setting you can see.

If you're comparing tools, [the best free social media schedulers](/blog/best-free-social-media-schedulers) and [free Hootsuite alternatives](/blog/free-hootsuite-alternatives) cover the options, and [how to choose a social media scheduler](/blog/choose-social-media-scheduler) walks through the questions worth asking first.

## How do I schedule tweets with PostMesh?

[PostMesh](/platform/twitter) publishes text and image posts to X through the official X API, right away or at a time you pick up to 30 days ahead. Any X account you can post from works, so you don't need an X Premium tier to schedule. The same post can go to Instagram, Facebook Pages, Threads, Reddit, LinkedIn, YouTube and TikTok at once, with a shorter version just for X.

1. **Connect X**: Sign in with X and approve PostMesh. PostMesh never sees your password and doesn't ask for Direct Message access.
2. **Open New post**: Pick your X accounts, plus any other networks you want the post on.
3. **Write the post**: Up to 280 characters. If your main caption is longer, give X its own shorter version.
4. **Add an image if you want one**: One JPEG, PNG, WebP or GIF. Photos can be up to 5 MB and GIFs up to 15 MB.
5. **Schedule**: Under When, choose Later and pick a time up to 30 days ahead.
6. **Check the result**: Posts shows whether X accepted it. If it failed, Retry sends again only to the accounts that failed.

- While you write: PostMesh checks the 280-character limit and the image's type and size for X and every other network you picked
- When you schedule: The post is held in PostMesh's queue, up to 30 days ahead
- Every minute: PostMesh checks the queue for posts that are due
- At the time you picked: PostMesh sends it to X through the official X API, within a minute
- Afterward: Posts shows each account's result, with Retry for any that failed

### What can PostMesh post to X?

| Content | PostMesh | Details |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Text | Yes | Up to 280 characters. |
| One image | Yes | JPEG, PNG, WebP or GIF. Photos up to 5 MB, GIFs up to 15 MB. |
| Several images in one post | Not yet | One image per post. |
| Video | Not yet | Leave X out of a video post, or use X's own tools. |
| Threads of posts | Not yet | Each PostMesh post becomes one post on X. |
| Polls | Not yet | Use the X app or x.com. |
| Several X accounts | Yes | Pick each one in New post. Each counts toward your plan's account limit. |

For posts PostMesh sends, it shows impressions, likes, replies and reposts. It sees your X handle, name, profile photo and verification badge, and never your password or Direct Messages.

There's no free plan. Creator is $29 a month with 10 connected accounts, Growth is $49 with 50, and Pro is $99 with unlimited accounts, all with unlimited publishing. Yearly billing brings those to $22, $37 and $75 a month. Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial for new subscribers. See [pricing](/pricing) for the full comparison.

## X's scheduler, PostMesh or posting by hand?

Posting by hand means writing the post and sending it yourself at the moment you want, with a reminder in your calendar. It's the only way to use every feature X has, and it costs nothing, but you have to be there. Here's how the three compare on the things you can check.

| | X's own schedulers | PostMesh | By hand |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Cost | x.com: not tied to a tier in X's help. X Pro: Premium+. Media Studio: Premium or Premium+. | From $29 a month after a 7-day trial | Free |
| You need to be online at post time | No | No | Yes |
| Video | Yes | No | Yes |
| Several images | Up to 4 photos on x.com | One image | Up to 4 photos |
| Threads and polls | Threads not in Media Studio; others not described | No | Yes |
| Longer posts | Premium, in X's apps | No, 280 characters | Premium |
| Other networks in the same step | No | 7 other networks | No |
| Change it before it goes out | x.com: yes. Media Studio: no. X Pro: not stated. | Cancel and reschedule | Not applicable |

**X's own schedulers**
- Every post type X's web composer supports
- X Pro needs Premium+, Media Studio needs Premium
- X only
- Queued posts under Unsent posts or in a column

**PostMesh**
- Text or one image, 280 characters
- Any X account, up to 30 days ahead
- X plus 7 other networks in one post
- Results and Retry for each account

**By hand**
- Every feature, including threads and polls
- Free
- You must be there at the time
- Easy to miss when you're busy

*Facts from X's Help Center and PostMesh's X page.*

If X is your only network and you post a few times a week, the x.com scheduler is enough. Threads, polls and video posts are worth doing by hand or in X's own tools. A scheduler earns its place when the same announcement goes to X, LinkedIn, Threads and Facebook every week, and you'd rather write it once and see each network's limit while you type.

## Why didn't my scheduled tweet post?

Work through the likely causes in order. Most come down to the post itself, the account or the clock.

| What you see | Likely reason | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Nothing posted at the time | It was saved as a draft, not scheduled | Open Unsent posts and check it has a time |
| It posted an hour early or late | The time was set in a different time zone | Check the zone the picker uses, then reschedule |
| Media Studio says the post is a duplicate | It's too similar to a post already on the account | Change the wording and schedule it again |
| Media Studio says rate limit exceeded | The account has 1,000 draft or scheduled posts | Delete old drafts or scheduled posts you don't need |
| Media Studio upload failed | File too large, unsupported settings or a dropped connection | Check size and encoding, re-export as MP4, upload again |
| A scheduler says the post failed | Too long, unsupported media, or the connection to X expired | Read the error, fix it, and retry or reconnect |

### It was a draft, not a scheduled post

On x.com, drafts and scheduled posts live in the same place, Unsent posts. A post closed with the X icon and Save is a draft and will never go out on its own. Open Unsent posts and look for the scheduled time. If there isn't one, open the post, set a time with the calendar icon, and confirm.

### The time zone was wrong

Media Studio's date picker uses your current time zone, so a laptop still set to your home zone while you travel will schedule in that zone. X's x.com instructions don't say which zone the calendar uses. After scheduling, check the time shown on the scheduled post, and if your audience is in another zone, convert from their local time. A time zone converter in your calendar app helps when you're scheduling across continents.

### The media was rejected

Check the file against the limits for the tool you used. For posts through X's API, images must be 5 MB or less and GIFs 15 MB or less. In Media Studio, images go up to 20 MB, GIFs to 15 MB and videos to 8 GB, and processing has 30 minutes to finish. In PostMesh, a post to X can carry one JPEG, PNG, WebP or GIF; if a video is attached, give X a separate image post or leave it out of that post.

### X turned it down as a duplicate

X's Media Studio page lists a duplicate error for a post that's too similar to one already posted, and says a slight change to the wording fixes it. This catches recurring posts, like a weekly reminder with the same text. Change a line, add the date, or rotate between a few versions.

### The post went out but didn't get seen

If the post is on your profile but you suspect nobody saw it, that's a reach question, not a scheduling one. Check that your account is public with [how to make your X account public](/blog/how-to-make-your-x-account-public), and see [the X shadowban test](/blog/x-shadowban-test) for what X's own pages say about limited visibility.

## What time should I schedule tweets?

There isn't a time that suits every account, and X doesn't publish one. Your own numbers are the best guide. X's Media Studio page points to post and video analytics dashboards at analytics.x.com, and PostMesh shows impressions, likes, replies and reposts for posts it sends. Pick a few slots, keep them for three or four weeks, then compare.

- Schedule in your audience's time zone, not yours. If most of your followers are in New York and you're in London, a 9 a.m. post for them is 2 p.m. for you for most of the year.
- Spread posts out. Two scheduled posts a minute apart compete with each other in your followers' timelines.
- Keep a slot free for news. A scheduled post that ignores something big happening in your field can read as tone-deaf, so check the queue on busy days.
- Write down when each post went out and how it did. A simple spreadsheet beats memory after a month.

If you also post on other networks, their best-time guides are a useful comparison: [LinkedIn](/blog/best-time-to-post-on-linkedin), [Instagram](/blog/best-time-to-post-on-instagram) and [Facebook](/blog/best-time-to-post-on-facebook). Each summarizes what the published studies found, with their sources.

## How do I plan a week of tweets in one sitting?

Scheduling pays off when you batch the work. This routine uses only the tools above.

1. **Pick the slots**: Decide how many posts and on which days. Use your own post analytics if you have a few weeks of history, and note the time zone your audience lives in.
2. **Write every post at once**: Drafting together keeps the week consistent and stops two posts from saying the same thing. Count each one with the weighted rules: links are 23, emoji are 2.
3. **Sort by tool**: Threads and polls go by hand or in X's tools. Video posts go to x.com or Media Studio. Text and single-image posts can go anywhere, including a scheduler if they also belong on other networks.
4. **Vary recurring posts**: Change the wording of anything you post every week, so X doesn't reject it as a duplicate.
5. **Schedule and read the queue**: Open Unsent posts, X Pro's Scheduled column or your scheduler's calendar, and read the week top to bottom.
6. **Leave time for replies**: A scheduled post still needs you when people reply. Plan a few minutes after each one goes live.

**Before you schedule a tweet**
- [ ] 280 characters or fewer, counting links as 23 and emoji as 2
- [ ] Up to 4 photos, or 1 GIF or 1 video, within the size limits
- [ ] Not a near copy of a post already on the account
- [ ] Scheduled, not saved as a draft
- [ ] The time set in your audience's time zone
- [ ] Threads, polls and video posts kept for X's own tools or posting by hand

*Each item matches a rule in X's Help Center or developer docs.*

If the same posts also go to LinkedIn or Threads, write the X version first. A post that works in 280 characters can be expanded for LinkedIn's 3,000 and trimmed into Threads' 500. [How to post on all social media at once](/blog/how-to-cross-post-to-multiple-platforms) covers adapting one post for each network, and [does cross-posting hurt engagement](/blog/does-cross-posting-hurt-engagement) looks at what the networks say about posting the same thing in several places. For other networks' own schedulers, see the guides to scheduling [LinkedIn posts](/blog/how-to-schedule-linkedin-posts), [Instagram posts](/blog/how-to-schedule-instagram-posts), [TikTok videos](/blog/how-to-schedule-tiktok-videos) and [YouTube videos](/blog/how-to-schedule-youtube-videos).

## Questions

### Can I schedule a tweet for free?

X's How to Post page describes the calendar icon in the x.com compose box without tying it to a subscription. X Pro needs Premium+ and Media Studio needs Premium or Premium+.

### Where do I find my scheduled tweets?

On x.com, select Unsent posts from the compose box. In X Pro, add a Scheduled column. In Media Studio, click Schedule in the top navigation bar.

### Can I edit a scheduled tweet?

On x.com, open it from Unsent posts and change it. Media Studio can't edit a scheduled post, so delete it and make a new one there.

### Can I schedule a thread on X?

Media Studio doesn't support threads, and PostMesh posts each item as a single post. X's x.com and X Pro pages don't describe scheduling a thread, so post threads by hand if your composer doesn't offer it.

### Why can't I see a schedule option in the X app?

X's How to Post page only mentions the calendar icon in its x.com instructions, not in the iPhone or Android steps. Use x.com in a browser instead.

### What time zone do scheduled tweets use?

Media Studio shows times in your current time zone. X's x.com instructions don't say, so check the time shown on the scheduled post after you save it.

### How many tweets can I schedule?

Media Studio returns a rate limit error once an account has 1,000 draft or scheduled posts, and it schedules one post at a time per account. X's other pages don't give a number.

### Can PostMesh schedule tweets with video?

Not yet. PostMesh posts text, or text with one image, to X. Use x.com or Media Studio for video.

### Do I need X Premium to schedule tweets with PostMesh?

No. PostMesh works with any X account you can post from, and checks the standard 280-character limit for all of them.

### Will people know a tweet was scheduled?

X's post details can show a source label, and a third-party client name there means the post came from a non-X app. Posts scheduled in X's own tools show X's labels.
