# How to schedule a YouTube video, and Premiere vs scheduled

In YouTube Studio, select Create, then Upload videos, add your details, choose Schedule on the Visibility step, set the date, time and time zone, and select Schedule. The video stays private until then and goes public on its own; check Set as Premiere as well if you want a public watch page, a countdown and live chat when it starts.

On YouTube, a scheduled video is a private video with a time attached. When the time comes, YouTube makes it public. A Premiere is a scheduled video with an event around it: a public watch page beforehand, a countdown, and chat while viewers watch together. This guide covers both from YouTube's Help Center, how to change a scheduled video, how Shorts fit in, how scheduling tools upload through YouTube's API, and what to do when a video doesn't go public on time.

## The short answer

Use a plain scheduled upload when you just want the video to go public at a set time. Use a Premiere when you want to build an audience for the moment it goes live, with a shareable page and chat. Use a scheduler when the same vertical video also goes to TikTok and Instagram, or when you upload to several channels at once.

**What do you want to happen at the publish time?**
- The video simply goes public → YouTube Studio: Schedule on the Visibility step. Private until then.
- Viewers watch together with a countdown and chat → Schedule and check Set as Premiere, then set up the countdown.
- It's a Short, or 360, or above 1080p → A plain scheduled upload. Premieres don't support these.
- The same video also goes to TikTok and Reels → A scheduler such as PostMesh, which uploads it as private and lets YouTube make it public on time.

## How do I schedule a video in YouTube Studio?

YouTube's [Schedule video publish time](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/1270709?hl=en) page gives these steps, and notes that you can use the YouTube app for them too:

1. **Start an upload**: Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Create, then Upload videos.
2. **Add the file and details**: Select your video file and fill in the title, description and the other details.
3. **Open Schedule**: On the Visibility step, select the Schedule card.
4. **Set the time**: Choose the date, the time and the time zone you want the video to go public.
5. **Confirm**: Select Schedule. The video stays private until that time.

YouTube Studio: Create › Upload videos › Details › Visibility › Schedule

*You pick the time zone yourself on the Schedule card.*

### What the Visibility step offers

YouTube's [Upload videos](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/57407?hl=en) page describes two choices on that step. Save or publish lets you pick Private, Unlisted or Public now, and a public video can be set as an instant Premiere. Schedule lets you pick a publish date; the page says the video will be private until that date, and it can also be set as a Premiere. Before Visibility, a Checks step screens for copyright issues; checks run in the background and you can publish while they're still running.

### What happens at the publish time?

At the time you set, YouTube switches the video from private to public. Per YouTube's visibility page, a public video can be seen by anyone, shows on your channel, can appear in search and related videos, and appears in the Subscriber feed. Comments open too, since private videos can't take them. Nothing else about the upload changes, so the title, description, thumbnail and audience setting you entered are what viewers get.

### Can I schedule several videos at once?

You can upload up to 15 videos at a time in Studio, then click Edit on each to add its details and its own schedule. Each video gets its own time, so a single upload session can fill a month of slots. Check the time zone on each Schedule card as you go, since every video has its own.

### What if I close the window too early?

YouTube says that if you close the upload window before choosing visibility, the video is saved as private. It won't go public by itself. Open it from Content in Studio, go to Visibility and set the schedule.

### Who can upload and schedule?

Anyone with a channel can upload, with two exceptions on YouTube's upload page. Uploading may not be available on supervised accounts. And the default visibility depends on age: private for creators aged 13 to 17 and public for those 18 or older, though anyone can change it. A teen creator who schedules a video still picks the schedule on the Visibility step like anyone else.

## Can I schedule a YouTube video from my phone?

YouTube's scheduling page says the YouTube app can be used for the same steps, without listing them separately. Its Android upload page describes uploading in the YouTube app: tap Create, then Video, choose the file and tap Next. A video of 3 minutes or less that's square or vertical is uploaded as a Short. In the YouTube Studio app, you tap Create at the top, add the title, privacy and monetization settings, choose whether the video is made for kids, and tap Upload video. Tap Show more for the extra fields. YouTube draws a line between uploading, which imports the file, and publishing, which makes the video available to anyone with access, so an uploaded video isn't necessarily live.

If you can't find a scheduling option in the app, finish the upload as private and set the schedule later in Studio on a computer: Content, the video, then Visibility. YouTube's Premiere page also says you can choose Set as Premiere on the app's Set visibility page when uploading.

## YouTube Premiere vs scheduled: what's the difference?

Both go public at a time you choose. The difference is what viewers see before and during that moment. YouTube's [Premieres](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/9080341?hl=en) page describes a Premiere as a way for you and your viewers to watch and experience a new video together in real time.

| | Scheduled | Premiere |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Watch page before the start | None: the video is private | Public, so you can share the link. It can appear in search, on the homepage and in recommendations. |
| Reminders | No | Viewers can set one and are notified about 30 minutes before and when it starts |
| At the start | The video goes public | A countdown starts at the scheduled time, using the theme and length you picked |
| While it plays | Normal viewing | Viewers watch together and can rewind, but can't skip past what's been shown |
| Chat | Comments | Live chat, and Super Chat if turned on |
| Trailer | No | If you upload one, it plays on the watch page beforehand |
| Afterward | A normal video | A normal video with chat replay; the Premiere's views carry over |
| Not supported | Nothing extra | Shorts, 360 and VR180, and output above 1080p |

- When you schedule it: The watch page goes public and viewers can set a reminder
- About 30 minutes before: Viewers who set a reminder get a notification
- At the scheduled time: The countdown starts, then the video plays for everyone
- While it plays: Live chat runs; viewers can rewind but not skip ahead
- Afterward: It stays on your channel as a normal video, with chat replay

*From YouTube Help's Premieres page.*

### How do I set up a Premiere?

1. **Upload in Studio**: Select Create, then Upload videos, choose the file and enter the details.
2. **Choose Schedule**: On the Visibility step, choose Schedule and enter a date and time.
3. **Check Set as Premiere**: This turns the scheduled upload into a Premiere.
4. **Set up the countdown**: Click Set up Premiere to pick a countdown theme and length.
5. **Finish**: Click Done or Schedule.

For an instant Premiere instead, choose Save or publish, then Public, then Set as instant Premiere. YouTube's Premieres page doesn't cover changing or cancelling a scheduled Premiere, so plan the time carefully before you share the watch page.

### Which should I pick?

**Scheduled**
- Private until the time, then public
- Works for Shorts, 360 and high resolutions
- Nothing for viewers to wait for
- Best for regular uploads

**Premiere**
- Public watch page you can promote
- Reminders, countdown and live chat
- No Shorts, 360 or output above 1080p
- Best for launches and big videos

*From YouTube Help's scheduling and Premieres pages.*

A Premiere only helps if you'll be there to chat and you have a reason for people to show up at once. Its watch page can appear in search, on the homepage and in recommendations before the start, so it gives a launch a few days of visibility that a private scheduled video doesn't get. For a weekly upload, a plain schedule does the job with less to manage.

## How do I change or cancel a scheduled YouTube video?

YouTube's scheduling page covers both changes. Go to Content in Studio, select the video, then Edit and Visibility.

| You want to | What to do |
| --- | --- |
| Move the time | Keep visibility set to Private, click Edit draft, choose a new time under Schedule and select Publish. |
| Publish it now | Set visibility to Public and select Publish. |
| Keep it out of view for now | In Content, open the Visibility menu, choose Private or Unlisted and select Save. |

YouTube's [visibility page](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/157177?hl=en) explains the three settings. Public videos can be seen by anyone and appear on your channel and in search. Private videos are visible only to you and people you choose, and can't take comments. Unlisted videos can be seen by anyone with the link but don't appear on your channel or in search unless added to a public playlist.

## What are the limits of scheduling on YouTube?

| Question | What YouTube Help says |
| --- | --- |
| How far ahead? | YouTube's scheduling page doesn't state a maximum. |
| Which time zone? | The one you choose on the Schedule card. |
| Which date shows on the watch page? | The Published on date uses Pacific Standard Time, so it can differ from Studio. |
| What if I have a strike? | A scheduled video won't publish during the penalty period. It stays private and you reschedule it later. |
| How long can the video be? | 15 minutes, unless your account is verified. |
| How big? | 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. |
| How many a day? | There's a daily upload limit across desktop, mobile and the API; YouTube's page doesn't give the number. |
| Title and description? | Up to 100 characters for the title and 5,000 for the description. |

### Why the Published on date can look wrong

YouTube says the date on the watch page is based on Pacific Standard Time. If you schedule a public video in a time zone ahead of PST, the date viewers see can differ from the one in Studio. For example, a video scheduled for early morning in London, Berlin or Tokyo goes public while it's still the previous day in California, so the watch page shows the earlier date. Nothing is broken; the video went out at the time you chose. If the date itself matters, such as a video tied to an anniversary, pick a time when it's already that date in California as well.

### Strikes freeze schedules

If your channel has a Community Guidelines strike, YouTube says a scheduled video won't publish during the penalty period. It's set to private for that period, and you have to reschedule it after the freeze ends. The same applies to scheduled Premieres. If several videos are queued, check each one once the penalty ends.

### Longer videos need verification

YouTube's page on [longer videos](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/71673?hl=en) says uploads are capped at 15 minutes by default, and verified accounts can upload longer ones. You verify in the YouTube mobile app during an upload, with a text message or an automated voice call. Do this before scheduling a long video, not the night before it's due.

### There's a daily upload limit

YouTube's upload page says every channel has a daily upload limit that counts uploads from desktop, mobile and the API together, and links to a page on increasing it. It doesn't give the number. If you batch a month of videos in one evening and uploads start failing, the limit is a likely cause: finish the rest the next day, and schedule each video's publish time as normal.

## Can you schedule YouTube Shorts?

Yes, through the same Schedule card, because a Short is an upload like any other. YouTube's help pages don't describe a separate scheduler for Shorts. Its page on [three-minute Shorts](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/15424877?hl=en) says videos uploaded on or after October 15, 2024 with a square or vertical aspect ratio, up to three minutes long, are categorized as Shorts, and that you can upload them through the YouTube app and YouTube Studio. A wider ratio such as 16:9 keeps a video long-form.

### Shorts rules worth knowing before you schedule

- Premieres don't support Shorts, so schedule a Short as a plain upload.
- A Short over one minute with an active copyright claim is blocked: not playable, not recommended and not monetizable, until the claim is resolved. Shorts under a minute aren't subject to that rule.
- Most songs can be used for up to 90 seconds in a three-minute Short, and some only for 60 or 30 seconds. Music from the YouTube Audio Library doesn't receive a Content ID claim.
- In the YouTube app, a longer square or vertical video can be trimmed with Edit into a Short.

A Short with a claim scheduled for a launch could go public and still be blocked, so clear the music first. If you're cutting a Short from a longer video, [how to clip a YouTube video](/blog/how-to-clip-a-youtube-video) covers YouTube's own clipping tools.

## How do third-party YouTube schedulers work?

Scheduling tools upload through the YouTube Data API. The [videos resource](https://developers.google.com/youtube/v3/docs/videos) has a publishAt property, the date and time a video is scheduled to publish, and it can be set only when the video's privacy status is private. So a scheduler uploads the video as private with a publish time, and YouTube does the rest. If you open Studio before the time and see the video as private, that's expected.

- The API's title limit is 100 characters and its description limit is 5,000 bytes. In plain English text that's about 5,000 letters, but emoji and accented letters take more than one byte.
- Tags share a single 500-character budget, and the commas between them count.
- The largest file the upload method accepts is 256 GB.
- If an app doesn't set a privacy status, an upload defaults to public, so a scheduler has to set private on purpose.

The API also has a made-for-kids property that lets the channel owner designate a video as child-directed, so a scheduler should ask you about it the way Studio's upload flow does. And custom thumbnails only apply on verified channels, so a tool that offers a thumbnail field can't make YouTube accept one on an unverified channel.

Because uploads are large, check how a tool handles them: whether it uploads in chunks, whether you have to keep a tab open, and whether it shows the result once YouTube has the file. Count a long description in bytes, not characters, with the [YouTube description counter](/tools/youtube-description-character-counter).

## How do I schedule YouTube videos with PostMesh?

[PostMesh](/platform/youtube) uploads videos to your YouTube channels through the official YouTube API, with a title, description, tags, thumbnail and Made for kids setting, right away or scheduled up to 30 days ahead. Scheduling works the way YouTube's own does: the video uploads as private, and YouTube makes it public at the time you pick.

1. **Connect YouTube**: Sign in with Google, choose your channel, and allow both permissions Google asks for: upload videos, and view your channel.
2. **Open New post**: Pick one or more YouTube channels. With several, the video uploads to each.
3. **Add a title and details**: A title up to 100 characters, a description up to 5,000 bytes, up to 15 tags, and Made for kids if it applies.
4. **Add a thumbnail**: Optional: a JPEG or PNG under 2 MB. YouTube only accepts custom thumbnails on verified channels.
5. **Add the video**: MP4, MOV, WebM, MPEG, AVI, WMV, FLV, 3GP or MXF, up to 256 GB, uploaded in chunks. Keep the tab open while it uploads.
6. **Schedule**: Under When, choose Later and pick a time up to 30 days ahead.
7. **Check the result**: Posts shows whether YouTube accepted it, with Retry for any channel that failed.

- While you write: PostMesh checks the title, description bytes, tags and file for YouTube and every other network you picked
- While it uploads: The video goes to YouTube in chunks; keep the tab open
- Until the time you picked: The video sits on YouTube as private
- At the time you picked: YouTube makes it public
- Afterward: Posts shows the result, and views, likes and comments for the video

### What can PostMesh do on YouTube?

| You want to | PostMesh | Use instead |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Schedule a video to go public | Yes, up to 30 days ahead | Not needed |
| Post now as public or private | Yes | Not needed |
| Upload a Short | Yes: a vertical video up to 3 minutes is marked as a Short automatically | Not needed |
| Upload to several channels | Yes, the same video to each | Not needed |
| Upload as unlisted | No | YouTube Studio |
| Schedule a video to stay private | No | Post it now as private instead |
| Set up a Premiere | Not listed among PostMesh's YouTube features | YouTube Studio |
| Playlists, Community posts, live streams | No | YouTube Studio |

PostMesh sees your channel name, handle and picture, the titles of your latest uploads so it doesn't upload the same video twice, and the views, likes and comments on videos you send from it. It never sees your password, watch history, subscriptions or playlists.

To change a video you scheduled in PostMesh, cancel it in Posts or Calendar and schedule the new version. A post that has already started sending can't be cancelled. With several channels picked, the same video uploads to each, and every channel counts toward your plan's connected-account limit.

There's no free plan. Creator is $29 a month with 10 connected accounts, Growth is $49 with 50, and Pro is $99 with unlimited accounts, all with unlimited publishing. Yearly billing brings those to $22, $37 and $75 a month, and every plan starts with a 7-day free trial for new subscribers. See [pricing](/pricing).

## YouTube Studio, PostMesh or publishing by hand?

Publishing by hand means uploading the video as private or unlisted and switching it to public yourself when the time comes. It's free and flexible, but you have to remember and be online.

| | YouTube Studio scheduling | PostMesh | By hand |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Cost | Free | From $29 a month after a 7-day trial | Free |
| How far ahead | Not stated by YouTube | Up to 30 days | Not applicable |
| Premieres | Yes | Not listed | Instant Premiere when you publish |
| Unlisted | Yes | No | Yes |
| Custom thumbnail | Verified channels | Verified channels | Verified channels |
| Several channels at once | One upload per channel | Yes, in one post | One at a time |
| Other networks in the same step | No | TikTok, Instagram, Facebook Pages, Threads and LinkedIn | No |
| You need to be online at the time | No | No, but keep the tab open during upload | Yes |

A common by-hand pattern is to upload a video as unlisted first, share the link with a client or collaborator for a final check, then switch it to public. YouTube's visibility page says an unlisted video can be watched by anyone with the link but doesn't show on your channel or in search unless it's added to a public playlist, which makes it a handy review step before release.

If YouTube is your only channel, Studio covers scheduling, Premieres and unlisted videos. PostMesh earns its place when a vertical video also goes to TikTok and Instagram, or when you upload the same video to several channels, with each network's limits checked before anything is sent.

## Why didn't my scheduled YouTube video go public?

| What you see | Likely reason | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Still private after the time | A Community Guidelines strike froze it | Reschedule it once the penalty period ends |
| Private before the time | That's how scheduling works | Nothing; it goes public at the time you chose |
| Public, but the date looks a day off | The watch page date uses PST | Nothing; it went out at your chosen time |
| Went public at the wrong hour | The time zone on the Schedule card was wrong | Next time, check the zone before selecting Schedule |
| Saved as private with no schedule | The upload window closed before Visibility | Open Visibility in Content and set the schedule |
| Upload stopped or rejected | Over 15 minutes on an unverified account, or too large | Verify your account, or check the 256 GB and 12-hour limits |
| Custom thumbnail missing | The channel isn't verified | Verify the channel; the video still uploads |

### The scheduled video didn't go out

Open Studio, go to Content and check the video's visibility. If it's still private with a past schedule, look for a Community Guidelines strike on the channel: YouTube holds scheduled videos as private during the penalty period, and you need to set a new time after the freeze ends. If there's no schedule at all, the upload was probably closed before the Visibility step, so set one now.

### The time zone was wrong

The Schedule card asks for a time zone, and it's easy to leave it on the one your account or browser picked. If the video already went public at the wrong hour, there's nothing to undo; check the zone next time. If it hasn't gone out yet, use Edit draft under Visibility to set the right time. And remember the watch page date follows PST, which can make a correct schedule look a day off.

### The video was rejected

Check the length first: without verification, YouTube caps uploads at 15 minutes. Then the file: up to 256 GB or 12 hours. Through PostMesh, the video must be one of the nine supported formats, and the tab has to stay open until the upload finishes. If PostMesh says a YouTube channel is required or a permission is missing, create the channel on YouTube first, or connect again and allow both permissions Google asks for. If you've lost access to the channel itself, [how to recover a YouTube account](/blog/how-to-recover-a-youtube-account) covers Google's recovery steps.

### A Short went public but won't play

If a Short over one minute has an active copyright claim, YouTube blocks it: it isn't playable, isn't recommended and can't earn, though YouTube says there's no channel penalty. Once the claim is resolved, it becomes viewable again. Shorts under a minute aren't subject to this, and tracks from the YouTube Audio Library don't get a Content ID claim, so check the music before you schedule.

## What time should I schedule YouTube videos?

Start with the [best time to post on YouTube](/blog/best-time-to-post-on-youtube), which summarizes the published studies, then use your own channel analytics once you have a few weeks of uploads. Choose the time zone on the Schedule card to match your audience rather than yourself. For a Premiere, give viewers enough notice to set a reminder: the watch page goes public once it's scheduled, and reminders go out about 30 minutes before the start.

If you're scheduling with earnings in mind, [how much YouTube pays per 1,000 views](/blog/how-much-does-youtube-pay-per-1000-views) and [when YouTube starts paying you](/blog/when-does-youtube-start-paying-you) explain what YouTube publishes about the Partner Program.

## A worked example: one week on a cooking channel

Say you run a cooking channel with a main video every Saturday and a few Shorts during the week, and your viewers are mostly on the US East Coast. Here's how one week works with the options above.

- The Saturday video is 18 minutes long. Your account is verified, so the length is fine. You upload it on Wednesday, choose Schedule, set 9:00 a.m. with the time zone set to New York, and select Schedule. It stays private until Saturday morning.
- It's your 100th video, so you make it a Premiere instead: on the Visibility step you check Set as Premiere, pick a countdown, and share the public watch page on Thursday so viewers can set reminders. You plan to be in the live chat at 9:00.
- Two 50-second vertical clips cut from it are Shorts. They can't be Premieres, so they're plain scheduled uploads. Because the same clips also go to TikTok and Instagram, you schedule them in PostMesh for all three networks on Monday and Wednesday.
- A third clip runs 70 seconds and uses a popular song. A Short over a minute with an active copyright claim is blocked, so you swap in a track from the YouTube Audio Library before scheduling it.

If a Premiere is in your plans, schedule it a few days ahead. The watch page only helps if people find it before the countdown starts.

## How do I plan a month of YouTube uploads?

1. **Pick your slots**: Choose the days and times, in your audience's time zone.
2. **Verify the account first**: Do it once, in the YouTube app, so videos longer than 15 minutes and custom thumbnails work.
3. **Write titles and descriptions together**: Titles up to 100 characters, descriptions up to 5,000. Check titles with the [YouTube title checker](/tools/youtube-title-checker) and draft tags with the [tag generator](/tools/youtube-tag-generator).
4. **Make the thumbnails**: Size them with the [YouTube thumbnail size guide](/blog/youtube-thumbnail-size) and the free [thumbnail resizer](/tools/youtube-thumbnail-resizer).
5. **Upload in one session**: Up to 15 files at a time in Studio, each with its own Schedule time. Decide which, if any, should be a Premiere.
6. **Check the queue**: Open Content and confirm every video shows its schedule.

**Before you select Schedule on YouTube**
- [ ] The title is 100 characters or fewer and the description fits
- [ ] The time zone on the Schedule card is your audience's
- [ ] Your account is verified if the video is over 15 minutes
- [ ] A Short is square or vertical and 3 minutes or less, with cleared music
- [ ] Set as Premiere is checked only if you want a countdown and chat
- [ ] The upload has finished before you close the window

*Each item matches a rule on a YouTube Help page.*

A vertical video up to 3 minutes can go to YouTube as a Short, to TikTok and to Instagram as a Reel in one PostMesh post. See [how to schedule TikTok videos](/blog/how-to-schedule-tiktok-videos) and [how to post a YouTube video on Instagram](/blog/how-to-post-a-youtube-video-on-instagram) for those networks' rules, [how to post on all social media at once](/blog/how-to-cross-post-to-multiple-platforms) for adapting one post per network, and the [social media character limits](/blog/social-media-character-limits) table for how YouTube's title and description limits compare.

## Questions

### Is a scheduled YouTube video visible before it goes public?

No. It's private, so only you and people you choose can see it. A Premiere is different: its watch page is public before the start.

### What's the difference between a Premiere and a scheduled video?

Both go public at a set time. A Premiere adds a public watch page beforehand, reminders, a countdown and live chat while viewers watch together.

### Can I schedule a YouTube Short?

Yes, with the Schedule card like any upload. Premieres don't support Shorts, so schedule it as a normal upload.

### Why does my video show yesterday's date?

The Published on date uses Pacific Standard Time. A video scheduled in a time zone ahead of PST can show an earlier date than Studio.

### How do I change the time of a scheduled YouTube video?

In Studio, go to Content, select the video, then Edit and Visibility. Keep it Private, click Edit draft, pick a new time and select Publish.

### Why didn't my scheduled video publish?

A Community Guidelines strike stops scheduled videos from publishing during the penalty period. Reschedule them once it ends.

### Can I schedule a YouTube video from my phone?

YouTube's help says the YouTube app can be used for the scheduling steps. If you don't see the option, upload as private and set the time in Studio.

### Why is my PostMesh video private on YouTube?

It's scheduled. PostMesh uploads scheduled videos as private, and YouTube makes them public at the time you picked.

### Can PostMesh upload unlisted videos?

No. Set up unlisted videos in YouTube Studio.

### Why didn't my custom thumbnail apply?

YouTube only accepts custom thumbnails on verified channels. The video still uploads without it.
