# How to turn off active status on Instagram and appear offline

Go to your profile, tap Menu, then Messages and story replies under How others can interact with you, tap Show activity status and turn off the Show Activity Status toggle. Instagram says that once it's off, you also won't see anyone else's activity status.

Instagram shows the people you follow and the people you message when you're online, with a green dot or a line like Active 25m ago. Turning that off takes about 20 seconds. What takes longer is knowing what it does and doesn't hide: it doesn't hide read receipts, it doesn't stop people seeing that you viewed their story, and it doesn't touch your status on Threads, Facebook or Messenger, which each have their own setting. This guide covers all of it, with every tap path and behavior taken from Instagram and Meta help pages checked on October 31, 2026.

## The short answer

The setting is called Show Activity Status, and it lives under Messages and story replies in your Instagram settings. Turn it off and the green dot and last-active timestamp disappear for everyone. The catch, per Instagram's [activity status page](https://help.instagram.com/1164377657035425), is that it works both ways: with your status off, you won't see when anyone else is active either.

Instagram: Profile › Menu › Messages and story replies › Show activity status › Show Activity Status off

*The same steps for the iPhone and Android apps, from Instagram Help.*

| Signal | Hidden when activity status is off? | Setting that controls it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Green dot next to your profile picture | Yes | Show Activity Status |
| Active 25m ago, Active yesterday | Yes | Show Activity Status |
| In the chat, In the camera | Likely, but not stated directly | Show Activity Status |
| Seen on messages you've read | No | Read receipts |
| Your name in someone's story viewers | No | No setting; viewing is always shown |
| Your note at the top of their inbox | No | Note audience, or delete the note |
| Your status on Threads | No | Threads online status |
| Your status on Facebook and Messenger | No | Active Status in each app |

## How do I turn off active status on Instagram?

Instagram's activity status page gives the same steps for the iPhone and Android apps:

1. **Go to your profile**: Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
2. **Open the menu**: Tap Menu in the top right.
3. **Open message settings**: Below How others can interact with you, tap Messages and story replies.
4. **Open the activity setting**: Tap Show activity status.
5. **Turn it off**: Tap the toggle next to Show Activity Status. Tap it again any time to turn it back on.

Instagram, Messages and story replies:
- Message requests: Who can send you requests
- Show activity status: Green dot and last active (tap this)
- Show read receipts: Seen on messages you read

*Rows Instagram's help pages place under Messages and story replies. Your app may show more options.*

### On a computer

On instagram.com, the same page says to click More in the bottom left, then Settings. Below How others can interact with you, click Messages and story replies, click Show Activity Status, and click the toggle to turn it off. If you use Instagram on a laptop a lot, our guide to [using Instagram from a desktop](/blog/can-you-post-on-instagram-from-desktop) covers what the website can and can't do.

### iPhone, Android and Instagram Lite

Instagram's page shows identical steps for iPhone and Android. It also lists help for the Instagram Lite app, the iPad app and mobile browsers. The page doesn't say whether changing the setting on one device changes it everywhere. Meta's Facebook help says Facebook's own active status setting only applies to the device you change it on, so if you use Instagram on several devices, it's worth checking the toggle on each one.

### Turning it back on

Follow the same path and tap the toggle again. Instagram says you can turn your activity status on or off at any time. Once it's back on, your green dot and timestamp return for people you follow and people you message, and you'll see the status of anyone who also has theirs on.

## What happens when you turn off activity status?

Two things happen at once. Other people stop seeing your status, and you stop seeing theirs. Instagram's activity status page spells out the second part: with your status off, you won't see when accounts who follow you, or accounts you have direct conversations with, are active, were recently active or are currently active in the same chat as you, and you won't be able to see anyone else's activity status at all.

### Why it works both ways

Instagram's [page on seeing who's active](https://help.instagram.com/906123729538696) says you can see when someone was last active or is currently active only when you both have Activity Status turned on. So there's no setting that lets you see others while staying hidden yourself. If you only want to hide from one person and keep seeing everyone else, restrict is the documented way to do that, as explained below.

### Does anyone get told?

Instagram's activity status pages don't describe any notification when you turn the setting off or on. From the other side, your green dot and timestamp simply stop appearing. People who know that both of you need the setting on to see each other may guess, but Instagram doesn't announce it, and a missing dot can also mean you haven't been on the app.

### What stays the same

- People can still message you, and you can still message them.
- Read receipts keep working unless you turn them off separately.
- People still see that you viewed their story.
- Your notes, posts and stories are still visible to the audience you chose.
- Your Threads, Facebook and Messenger statuses don't change.

## What does the green dot mean on Instagram?

The green dot means the person is active on Instagram right now. Instagram's activity status page says that when your status is on, a green dot or a timestamp showing when you were last active appears next to your profile picture in messaging. Its page on seeing who's active lists where you'll see these signals for other people.

| Where | What you might see | What it means |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Next to a profile picture | Green dot | They're currently active |
| Next to a profile picture | A timestamp | When they were last active |
| Your inbox | Active 25m ago, Active yesterday | Their most recent activity |
| Your inbox | Seen | They've read your message (read receipts) |
| Your inbox | Typing... | They're writing a message to you |
| Inside a chat | In the chat, In the camera | What they're doing in that chat right now |

### Active now vs Active x ago

What people call active now is the green dot: Instagram describes it as currently active. A line like Active 25m ago or Active yesterday is the most recent time Instagram registered them as active. The examples come straight from Instagram's page. Instagram doesn't say how precise the timestamp is or how it decides someone has gone inactive, so read it as approximate.

### Why can't I see someone's green dot?

- Your own activity status is off. Instagram says you can't see anyone's status while yours is off.
- Their activity status is off. It only shows when you both have it on.
- You don't follow them and haven't messaged them. Instagram shows status for people you follow or have direct conversations with.
- They've restricted you. Instagram says a restricted person can't see when the other person is online.
- They're in sleep mode, which replaces the green dot with a moon icon, as covered below.

### Green dot vs green ring

A green ring around someone's profile photo is a different signal. Instagram's [Close Friends page](https://help.instagram.com/476003390920140) says that people on your Close Friends list may see a green ring around your profile photo, along with a Close friends label on notes, reels or stories you share with them. It tells them you've shared something with your close friends, not that you're online right now. Turning off activity status doesn't affect it.

### Is it the same green dot as on Facebook and LinkedIn?

The idea is the same, but each app runs its own. Meta's [Messenger help page on active status](https://www.facebook.com/help/messenger-app/321774648351848) says a green dot shows when you're active on Facebook and Messenger, and that a green dot on a Facebook Page means something else: the Page has been online recently or replies quickly. LinkedIn has its own version too, explained in our guide to the [LinkedIn green dot](/blog/linkedin-green-dot-meaning).

## How do I appear offline to just one person?

Turning off activity status hides you from everyone. To hide from one account while keeping your status on for everyone else, restrict them. Instagram's [restrict page](https://help.instagram.com/2638385956221960) says a restricted person can't see when you're online or whether you've read their messages. Their chat also moves to Message requests and their new comments on your posts are hidden from others until you approve them, so it changes more than your status. To restrict from a chat, tap their name at the top, tap Options, then Restrict, and confirm. Our guide to [what restrict means on Instagram](/blog/what-does-restrict-mean-on-instagram) covers the rest.

**Who do you want to appear offline to?**
- Everyone → Turn off Show Activity Status. You'll stop seeing others' status too.
- One person → Restrict them. They can't see when you're online or if you've read their messages.
- Everyone, at night → Use sleep mode. Your status shows In sleep mode instead of the green dot.
- One chat, for read receipts → Turn off read receipts in that chat's Privacy & safety.

*From Instagram's help pages on activity status, restrict, sleep mode and read receipts.*

### Muting their chat doesn't hide you

Muting is sometimes mistaken for a privacy setting. Instagram's [mute page](https://help.instagram.com/469042960409432) says you can open a chat, tap the person's name, tap Mute, and turn on Mute messages or Mute calls. That stops their messages and calls from notifying you, and Instagram won't tell them. It doesn't change anything they can see, including your activity status. Use restrict if you want to disappear for them; use mute if you just want quiet.

### Hide your story from them too

A new story is its own sign that you've been on the app. If you're restricting someone to go quiet, consider hiding your story from them as well. Instagram's [hide story page](https://help.instagram.com/1177797265575168) puts it in Menu, then Story, live and location below Who can see your content, then Hide your story and live videos from specific people. They won't see future stories or live videos, though they can still see your profile and posts.

## Does turning off active status hide read receipts?

No. Read receipts are a separate setting. Instagram's [read receipts page](https://help.instagram.com/1586876252167004) says they let others in a chat see when you've viewed their message, and you can turn them off for one chat or for all chats.

1. **For one chat**: Open Messages, tap the conversation, tap the chat name at the top, tap Privacy & safety, and turn off Read receipts.
2. **For all chats**: Go to Menu, then Messages and story replies under How others can interact with you, tap Show read receipts, and turn off Read receipts.

One rule catches people out. Instagram says a setting you change in an individual chat isn't affected by the all-chats setting. If you turned read receipts on in one chat and later turn them off for all chats, that chat still sends read receipts. When you're tidying up, check any chats where you changed the setting before.

## What else shows people I'm on Instagram?

Activity status is the obvious signal, but several other things can tell people you've been on the app. None of them is controlled by the activity status toggle.

### Viewing their story

Instagram's page on [who can tell you've seen a story](https://help.instagram.com/539014856306844) says that when you see someone's story, they'll be able to tell you've seen it. Its [story viewers page](https://help.instagram.com/202055156863605) says the poster can see the usernames of viewers for up to 48 hours after posting. So viewing a story while your status is off still shows that you were around. The story viewers page notes one exception on the poster's side: the viewer list doesn't include the usernames of Instagram Plus subscribers who previewed the story. Instagram's pages don't describe that feature further, and turning off activity status has nothing to do with it. If you're wondering about screenshots too, see our guide on [whether Instagram notifies when you screenshot](/blog/does-instagram-notify-when-you-screenshot).

### Your notes

A note is a short post that sits at the top of the inbox and above your profile picture. Per Instagram's [notes page](https://help.instagram.com/427590629371317), you can share up to one note at a time, of up to 60 characters, and it stays visible for up to 24 hours. You choose the audience when you share it: followers you follow back, or your close friends. A fresh note is a fairly clear sign you've been on the app, so if you want to stay quiet, skip it or delete it by tapping your note, then Delete note.

Two privacy details from the same page: only you can see who liked or replied to your note, and if you add a location, anyone who can see the note can see the location. If someone else's notes are the noise you want gone, Instagram's [mute notes page](https://help.instagram.com/1422263675113408) says to tap and hold their note in Messages and tap Mute notes. They aren't notified.

- 60: Characters allowed in an Instagram note
- 24 hours: How long a note stays visible
- 48 hours: How long a story's viewer list is available

*Sources: Instagram Help pages on sharing notes and on seeing who viewed your story.*

### Typing and Seen

Instagram's page on seeing who's active lists Typing... and Seen among the statuses people see in their inbox. Seen comes from read receipts, which you control separately as described above. Instagram's pages don't say whether turning off activity status also hides Typing..., so assume the person you're writing to may see it.

### Likes you make

Likes aren't a live status, but they do show you've been active. Instagram's [likes visibility page](https://help.instagram.com/963701761845404) says you can choose, under Menu, then Likes you've made, whether everyone, people you follow, your close friends or no one can see what you like. The account that posted always sees your like.

## What does In sleep mode mean on Instagram?

Sleep mode is the in-between option for people who want to look unavailable without hiding their status entirely. Instagram's [sleep mode page](https://help.instagram.com/688407339404755) says that while it's on, your activity status changes to In sleep mode and the green active dot changes to a moon icon. Your notifications pause, people who message you get an auto-reply saying you won't be notified, and you'll see a reminder to close Instagram. You can still use the app and send messages. When sleep mode ends, you get a summary of what came in.

1. **Open Time management**: Go to your profile, tap Menu, and in Settings and activity tap Time management.
2. **Turn on Sleep mode**: Tap Sleep mode, then the toggle.
3. **Set the schedule**: Choose the days and times. Instagram allows up to 24 hours each day.
4. **Save**: Tap the arrow in the top left. Changes save automatically.

> Teen Accounts are in sleep mode from 10PM to 7AM every day by default, according to Instagram's sleep mode and Teen Account pages, and a parent or guardian can choose to block Instagram during that time.

## Does it hide me on Threads, Facebook and Messenger?

No. Each app has its own setting, and Meta's help pages say so directly.

### Threads

Instagram's [Threads online status page](https://help.instagram.com/421238550391759) says your Instagram activity status doesn't affect your Threads online status: if you turn off activity status on Instagram, your Threads status can still be on. To turn it off in the Threads app, go to your profile, tap Menu, tap Privacy, then Online status, and choose No one. As on Instagram, you won't see when others are online once yours is off. For teens aged 13 to 17, Threads sets online status to off by default.

### Messenger

Meta's [Messenger active status page](https://www.facebook.com/help/messenger-app/278118979024443) gives these steps for the iPhone app: tap Menu, then Settings, tap Active status, and turn off Show when you're active, then tap Turn off to confirm. On messenger.com, click your profile picture in the bottom left, click Preferences, click Active status, use the toggle and click Save. Meta's page on how active status works says that turning it off in Messenger hides you everywhere you use Messenger, including messenger.com.

1. Open Messenger and tap Menu
2. Tap Settings
3. Tap Active status
4. Turn off Show when you're active
5. Tap Turn off to confirm

*From Meta's Messenger help page for the iPhone app.*

The same Meta page notes two more things. When your Messenger status is off, you won't see other people's status there either, just like on Instagram. And if you don't want one person to see your status, you can block them to stop sharing your active status with them. Meta also says that if you can't see someone else's status, it may be because they turned theirs off or blocked you.

### Facebook

Meta's [Facebook active status page](https://www.facebook.com/help/215888465102253) gives these steps for the iPhone app: tap Menu in the top left, scroll down to Settings and privacy, tap Settings, then under Audience and visibility tap Active Status and turn off Show when you're active. Facebook behaves differently from Messenger. Meta says turning it off on Facebook only hides you on the device you're using, so you need to do it on each device, and if you reinstall the Facebook app, active status turns back on.

**Threads**
- Separate from Instagram
- Profile, Menu, Privacy, Online status
- Choose No one
- Off by default for ages 13 to 17

**Messenger**
- Separate from Facebook
- Menu, Settings, Active status
- Off applies everywhere you use Messenger
- Includes messenger.com

**Facebook**
- Separate from Messenger
- Settings and privacy, Settings, Active Status
- Off applies only on that device
- Turns back on if you reinstall

## Why am I still showing as active?

### You turned it off in the wrong app

Instagram, Threads, Facebook and Messenger each keep their own setting. If a friend says they saw you online, ask which app. Then turn it off there too, using the steps above.

### You use Instagram on more than one device

Instagram's page doesn't say whether the setting follows your account across devices. Facebook's doesn't, by Meta's own description. Check the toggle on your phone, tablet and computer to be sure.

### It hasn't caught up yet

Meta's Messenger page says there can be a delay before someone's status updates, and suggests closing and reopening the app, updating it and checking your internet connection. Instagram doesn't publish its own troubleshooting for activity status, but those are sensible first steps on any Meta app.

### You can't find Messages and story replies

Look for the How others can interact with you section of the menu. Instagram's help pages put Messages and story replies there, alongside Restricted and Limit interactions. On a computer, open More, then Settings, and the same section appears. Teen Accounts also have a Teen Account settings screen in Settings and activity for the settings that need a parent's approval.

### They're seeing Seen, not your status

If someone knows you read their message, that's a read receipt, not your activity status. Turn read receipts off for that chat or for all chats.

### They saw you in their story viewers

Story views are always shown to the poster. Turning off activity status doesn't change that.

## Which settings should I change? Four setups

Most people don't need every setting in this guide. Here are four common goals and the smallest set of changes that meets each, using only the settings above.

### You want to read messages without pressure to reply

Turn off read receipts for all chats, then turn off Show Activity Status. People won't see Seen on their messages or a green dot next to your name. Check any chat where you changed read receipts individually before, since Instagram keeps that per-chat choice. You'll lose the ability to see when friends are online, which is the trade Instagram requires.

### You want quiet evenings, not invisibility

Leave activity status on and set sleep mode for the hours you're off. People see In sleep mode and a moon icon instead of the green dot, they get an auto-reply, and your notifications pause. You still see your friends' status during the day, and you get a summary when sleep mode ends.

### One person keeps checking whether you're online

Restrict them. They can't see when you're online or whether you've read their messages, and you keep your status for everyone else. Hide your story from them if new stories are also giving you away. If they're among the followers you follow back, they'll see your notes too, so share notes with close friends only for a while.

### You want to be off the grid across Meta's apps

Turn off Show Activity Status and read receipts on Instagram, Online status on Threads, active status in Messenger, and Active Status on Facebook on every device you use. Skip notes and stories for a while, because those still show you've been around. If you want a longer break than that, deactivating is a cleaner option than juggling settings.

## Does it work differently for teens and business accounts?

Instagram's activity status pages don't describe different rules for personal, business or creator accounts, so the setting and steps are the same. Professional accounts do get a different inbox: Instagram's [professional accounts page](https://help.instagram.com/138925576505882) describes Primary, General and Requests folders and the option to sort requests by date or by top accounts. That changes how you organize messages, not whether people see your status. Teens have a few differences nearby. Instagram's [Teen Account settings page](https://help.instagram.com/455298907304715) says Teen Accounts only receive messages from accounts they follow or are connected to by default. Teen Accounts also default to sleep mode at night, which shows In sleep mode instead of the green dot. And on Threads, teens' online status starts off.

## Active status and posts you schedule

Some people turn off active status because they don't want to be seen online at odd hours while they post. Scheduling helps with that, because you can prepare posts once and let them go out later. You can [schedule Instagram posts](/blog/how-to-schedule-instagram-posts) in the Instagram app, in Meta Business Suite or with a scheduler. Instagram's pages don't say whether a scheduled post or a browser session affects your last-active timestamp, so don't count on it either way. PostMesh publishes through Instagram's API, so it doesn't sign in as you or change your active status. The details are on our [Instagram page](/platform/instagram), and if you also post to Threads or Facebook Pages, see our [Threads](/platform/threads) and [Facebook](/platform/facebook) pages. To pick the hours worth posting at, our guide to the [best time to post on Instagram](/blog/best-time-to-post-on-instagram) collects what published studies found.

## Questions

### If I turn off my active status, can I still see others?

No. Instagram says that with your activity status off, you won't be able to see anyone else's activity status.

### Does turning off active status hide when I've read a message?

No. Read receipts are a separate setting under Messages and story replies, and you can also turn them off in a single chat's Privacy & safety.

### Can I hide my active status from just one person?

Yes, by restricting them. Instagram says a restricted person can't see when you're online or whether you've read their messages.

### What does the green dot mean on Instagram?

It means the person is currently active. If they're not, you may see a timestamp such as Active 25m ago instead.

### Does turning off Instagram activity status turn it off on Threads?

No. Instagram says your Instagram activity status doesn't affect your Threads online status, which you change under Privacy, then Online status in Threads.

### Will people know I turned off my activity status?

Instagram's pages don't describe any notification. People simply stop seeing your green dot and last-active time.

### Can people see I viewed their story if my status is off?

Yes. Instagram says that when you see someone's story, they'll be able to tell you've seen it, regardless of your activity status.

### What does the moon icon mean on Instagram?

It means the person is in sleep mode. Instagram says the green dot changes to a moon icon and their status shows In sleep mode.

### Can I turn off active status on instagram.com?

Yes. Click More, then Settings, then Messages and story replies under How others can interact with you, then Show Activity Status, and turn off the toggle.

### Why does Facebook still show me as active?

Facebook and Messenger have their own settings, separate from Instagram. Meta says Facebook's setting only applies to the device you change it on.
