There's no Insights switch to flip: Instagram's help pages say you need a public account, and public personal accounts find Insights in Your dashboard while business and creator accounts find them in the Professional dashboard. Switching to a professional account adds more tools, and account insights cover any period within the past 90 days.

Older guides say Insights are only for business accounts, and that switching to a professional account turns them on. That used to be the whole story. Instagram's current help pages say any public account can view insights, personal or professional, while professional accounts get a dashboard with more tools. This guide covers both routes with the exact paths from Instagram's help pages, every metric and what it means, how long each kind of data is kept, and what to do when Insights won't show up.

## The short answer

Instagram's page on [viewing account and content insights](https://help.instagram.com/1533933820244654) says you need a public account, personal or professional, to view insights. So turning them on means one of two things. If your account is private, make it public, or switch to a professional account, which makes it public automatically. If it's already public, Insights are already on: tap Profile, then Professional dashboard if you have a professional account or Your dashboard if you have a personal one.

From there, you'll see the past 30 days of Views, Interactions, New followers and Content you shared, and you can pick any timeframe within the past 90 days. Individual posts, Reels and Stories keep their insights for up to two years.

**What kind of Instagram account do you have?**
- Private personal account → Make it public, or switch to a professional account, which makes it public. Insights need a public account.
- Public personal account → Insights are already on. Open Profile, then Your dashboard.
- Business or creator account → Insights are on. Open Profile, then Professional dashboard, or Insights below For professionals in settings.
- Teen account under 16 → Teen accounts are private by default, and teens under 16 need a parent's or guardian's permission to go public.

*Whether Insights show depends on your account being public.*

| Your account | Can you see Insights? | Where to find them |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Private personal | No | Make the account public first |
| Public personal | Yes | Profile › Your dashboard |
| Creator | Yes, plus professional tools | Profile › Professional dashboard |
| Business | Yes, plus professional tools and ads | Profile › Professional dashboard |
| Professional switched back to personal and private | No | Make it public again; past data returns if you do within 90 days |

## Do I need a professional account to see Instagram Insights?

No, not anymore, though you'll see older advice and even an older Instagram page that says otherwise. Instagram's [About Instagram insights page](https://help.instagram.com/788388387972460) says that if you have a public account, you can use free insights to learn about trends across your followers and how your content performs. Its [dashboards page](https://help.instagram.com/257516379077270) says dashboards are available to all public accounts: personal accounts get Your dashboard, professional accounts get the Professional dashboard.

Instagram's [troubleshooting page for business and creator accounts](https://help.instagram.com/684550305010470) still says you can view Insights after converting to a business or creator account. The pages agree on what matters: professional accounts always have Insights, and the newer pages extend them to public personal accounts too. Instagram's [page on switching back to personal](https://help.instagram.com/1717693135113805) settles it: if you have a public account, you'll still have access to Your dashboard and insights after leaving a professional account.

### What a professional account adds

The dashboards page says the Professional dashboard also gives access to additional insights on monetization, and lets professional accounts create and review ads and see ad insights from Ad tools. Instagram's [professional accounts page](https://help.instagram.com/138925576505882) lists more: a Contact button, a category label, a secondary inbox with Primary, General and Requests folders, ranked message requests, tools for spotting spam followers, and posts and Reels that may appear in search engine results. Boosting content, and the ad insights that come with it, is only available to professional accounts.

**Public personal account**
- Your dashboard with insights
- Account and content insights, past 90 days
- Post, Reel and Story insights
- No boosting or ad insights

**Professional account**
- Professional dashboard with insights
- Monetization insights where eligible
- Boosting, ads and ad insights
- Contact button, category, extra inbox tools

*Both account types see core Insights once they're public.*

### What a professional account costs you

The professional accounts page lists the trade-offs. Professional accounts can't be set to private, and all pending follow requests are accepted automatically when you go public. If you link a Facebook Page, you can only share Instagram posts to Facebook through that Page. If those don't suit you, a public personal account still gets Insights.

### Which should you choose just for Insights?

If all you want is to see how your posts perform, a public personal account is enough, and it keeps the option to go private later. Switch to a professional account if you also want any of the extras: boosting posts and the ad insights that come with it, a Contact button and category on your profile, the professional inbox tools, or monetization tools where you're eligible. If you run a business or plan to sell, the professional route is the natural fit. If you're a person sharing your life who occasionally checks reach, staying personal and public costs you nothing on the Insights side.

## How do I turn on Insights by switching to a professional account?

Instagram's [setup page](https://help.instagram.com/502981923235522) gives this path in the Android and iPhone apps:

Instagram app: Profile › More › Account type and tools › Switch to professional account

*Account type and tools sits below For professionals in Settings and activity.*

1. **Open settings**: Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right, then tap More to go to Settings and activity.
2. **Find account type**: Below For professionals, tap Account type and tools, then select Switch to professional account.
3. **Pick a category**: Choose the category that best describes what you do. Instagram notes the category doesn't decide whether you get a business or creator account.
4. **Choose Creator or Business**: Tap Switch to professional account, choose Creator or Business, then tap Next.
5. **Finish setup**: Add contact details or tap Don't use my contact info. Connecting a Facebook Page is optional; tap Skip to leave it.

Instagram says you then have access to the Professional dashboard to see your insights, create ads and check your eligibility for monetization tools. You can choose later whether your category label and contact info show on your profile, from Edit profile.

### On a computer

On instagram.com, click More, then Settings. Below For professionals, select Account type and tools, then click Switch to professional account. Choose Creator or Business, click Next, select a category, click Done and confirm with Continue. Then add contact details or skip them.

### Creator or Business?

Instagram's setup page says business accounts are best for retailers, local businesses, brands, organizations and service providers, and creator accounts are best for public figures, content producers, artists and influencers. Both get the Professional dashboard and Insights. You can change between them, or back to personal, at any time.

> If your personal account is private, switching to a professional account makes it public, and all pending follow requests are accepted automatically. Review pending requests before you switch if that matters to you.

### What to do right after switching

- Decide what shows on your profile. Instagram's setup page says you can hide or display your category label and contact info from Edit profile, under Profile display and Public business information.
- Connect a Facebook Page only if you want it. Instagram says it's optional and makes sharing to Facebook and using ads and shopping tools easier.
- Open the Professional dashboard once to confirm Insights appear, then give it time. Instagram says past insights may not show if you converted recently, so your numbers fill in as you post.
- Post as usual for a few weeks before drawing conclusions. A week of data is too little to compare formats or times.

## How do I see Insights on a personal account?

Make the account public. Instagram's [privacy page](https://help.instagram.com/448523408565555) describes the toggle in the Android and iPhone apps:

Instagram app: Profile › Menu › Account privacy › Private account

*Turn the Private account toggle off to make a personal account public.*

Instagram's page describes the toggle for making an account private; turning it off makes the account public. If you're under 18, your account is private by default. Teens under 16 need a parent's or guardian's permission to switch to public, and teens aged 16 to 17 can switch without permission unless they've set up supervision.

Two things to know before you flip it. The insights page says you may not be able to see past insights if you've only recently made your account public. And if you switch back to private, you lose access to insights, though you can get past data back if you go public again within 90 days.

## Where do I find Instagram Insights?

Once your account is public, here's where Instagram's help page says to look in the app:

Instagram app: Profile › Professional dashboard or Your dashboard › See all insights

*If the dashboard isn't on your profile, it's in Settings and activity.*

- Professional account: tap Profile, then Professional dashboard.
- Personal account: tap Profile, then Your dashboard.
- If you don't see a dashboard on your profile: tap More to open Settings and activity, then tap Insights below For professionals, or Your dashboard below Your insights and tools.
- On instagram.com: select Dashboard in the left-hand menu, then Insights below For professionals or Your dashboard below Your insights and tools. Use the Insights dropdown to switch between Account and Content.

You'll land on the past 30 days of Views, Interactions, New followers and Content you shared. Tap any of them for more detail, and tap the (i) in the top right corner for Instagram's definition of each metric.

## What does Instagram Insights show?

Instagram's About insights page defines the main metrics for public accounts. In plain terms:

| Metric | What Instagram says it counts |
| --- | --- |
| Views | The number of times your content was played or displayed, across Reels, posts, Stories, Live and ads. Being introduced gradually. |
| Viewers | Unique accounts that saw your content on screen at least once, with top countries, cities, age ranges and gender. |
| Interactions | Actions people take on your content, such as likes, comments, saves and shares. |
| Accounts engaged | Unique accounts that interacted with your content, with demographics; split into followers and non-followers for posts, Stories and Live. |
| Total followers | Growth, top locations, age ranges and most active times, once you have at least 100 followers. |
| Content you shared | How many Stories, Reels or posts you posted in the timeframe, with a link to your content library. |

Instagram notes that viewers and accounts engaged are estimated and in development. For Reels, viewers counts unique accounts that saw the Reel on screen whether or not it played, which is why it can differ from views. Instagram also says certain messaging-related metrics are unavailable for businesses and ads delivered to and from Europe and Japan.

### Audience demographics

Demographics such as top cities and age ranges need two things. You have to use a preset timeframe rather than a custom one, and your content has to reach or engage more than 100 accounts in that period. If demographics don't appear for the last 7 days, Instagram suggests a longer preset such as Last 30 days, Previous month or Last 90 days.

### Insights for boosted posts

When you boost a post or Reel, Instagram's About insights page says you also get ad insights: the same metrics for the ad, plus ad goal results, cost per ad goal and spend. Boosting is only available to professional accounts, so this part of Insights only appears once you've switched. If you want to see what ads other accounts in your field are running before you spend, our guide to the [Meta Ads Library](/blog/meta-ads-library) explains Meta's public ad search.

- 90 days: How far back account insights go
- 2 years: How long post, Reel and Story insights last
- 30 days: How long Live insights last after a broadcast
- 100: Followers needed for follower insights

*The data windows and thresholds Instagram publishes for Insights.*

### What Insights can't tell you

- Who specifically viewed your profile or content. Instagram's insights pages describe counts and demographics, not lists of viewers.
- Account-level trends older than 90 days. Individual posts keep their numbers longer, but the account overview stops at 90 days.
- Live performance more than 30 days after a broadcast.
- Anything about Reels posted before May 14, 2021.
- Some messaging metrics for businesses in Europe and Japan, which Instagram says are unavailable.
- Exact figures for everything. Instagram labels several metrics as estimated and in development.

## How long does Instagram keep Insights data?

Different parts of Insights keep data for different lengths of time. Here's each one, from Instagram's help pages:

| Insights for | How long they're available | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Your account overall | Any timeframe within the past 90 days | [Account insights](https://help.instagram.com/1533933820244654) |
| Posts | Up to two years | [Post insights](https://help.instagram.com/553860108359435) |
| Reels | Up to two years after publishing, for Reels posted on or after May 14, 2021 | [Reel insights](https://help.instagram.com/202865988324236) |
| Stories | Up to two years after creation, even though the Story expires after 24 hours | [Story insights](https://help.instagram.com/383939598845756) |
| Live videos | Up to 30 days after the broadcast ends | [Live insights](https://help.instagram.com/148629740583709) |

That makes a habit worth forming: if you want account-level trends over longer than 90 days, write the numbers down or screenshot them each month. Individual posts keep their numbers much longer, so you can always go back and compare one post with another.

### What happens to Insights if you switch account type or privacy

- You switch to personal or private: Access to in-app insights stops, unless a personal account stays public
- Up to 90 days: Instagram preserves your past insights data
- Switch back within 90 days: Access to past insights returns
- Recently public or converted: Past insights may not show at first

*Instagram keeps past data for 90 days after you switch away.*

The troubleshooting page says that if you switch from business or creator back to personal, you lose access to in-app insights but the data is preserved for 90 days. The switching-back page adds that a public personal account keeps Your dashboard and insights. The insights page says the same 90-day rule applies when a public account goes private.

## How do I see Insights for a single post, Reel, Story or Live?

Every piece of content has its own insights, with metrics suited to the format.

### Posts

Tap Profile, tap the post, then tap View Insights. Instagram's post insights page lists Views, Interactions and Profile activity, which counts actions people take on your profile after engaging with the post.

### Reels

Tap Profile, go to Reels, tap the Reel and tap View insights. Reels add watch metrics: Watch time is the total time the Reel was played, including replays, and Average watch time is watch time divided by initial views. Follows counts accounts that followed you after viewing the Reel. For long Reels, average watch time is the number to watch; our guide to [posting a long video on Instagram](/blog/how-to-post-a-long-video-on-instagram) explains how to read it. If you make Reels in Instagram's Edits app, its [export page](https://help.instagram.com/553588510887194) says you can view real-time insights for Reels you post from it.

### Stories

While a Story is live, tap your profile picture to open it, then tap Activity, then Insights. For an expired Story, open your dashboard and tap Content you shared, then the Story. Story insights include Views, Viewers, Interactions such as replies, shares, sticker taps and link taps, Accounts engaged and Profile activity. Instagram notes reported numbers may be delayed as they populate.

### Live videos

Live insights are only in the mobile app. Tap Profile, tap the live video and tap View insights, or go to your dashboard, tap Content you shared and choose the broadcast. You'll see Viewers, Peak concurrent viewers, Comments, Shares and Accounts engaged. Going live needs a public account with at least 1,000 followers.

If you want to know who in particular liked a post rather than how many, that's a different screen; see our guide on [how to see who liked your Instagram post](/blog/how-to-see-who-liked-your-instagram-post).

## How do I change the Insights date range?

Account insights cover any period within the past 90 days. In the app, Instagram's help page says:

1. **Open a metric**: From your dashboard's insights overview, tap the insight you want to see.
2. **Open the dropdown**: Tap the date dropdown at the top.
3. **Pick a preset**: Choose Last 7 days, Last 14 days, Last 30 days, Previous month or Last 90 days. You may need to scroll right to see them all.
4. **Or set custom dates**: Choose a start and end date in the calendar. They must be at least 1 day apart and within the past 90 days.
5. **Apply**: Tap Update.

Instagram's separate [date range page](https://help.instagram.com/1407497629635879), which applies to business and creator accounts in the mobile app, lists the presets as 7, 14, 30, 60 or 90 days, so the exact options you see may differ. On instagram.com, use the dropdown to choose the last 7, 14, 30 or 90 days, or set custom dates. Remember that audience demographics only show with preset timeframes.

## Why can't I see my Instagram Insights?

Most missing-Insights problems come from a short list of rules on Instagram's own pages. Check these in order:

**If Instagram Insights won't show**
- [ ] Your account is public, personal or professional
- [ ] You made it public or converted recently; past data may lag
- [ ] You have 100 or more followers for follower insights
- [ ] You use a preset timeframe for demographics
- [ ] Your content reached or engaged over 100 accounts
- [ ] The Reel was posted on or after May 14, 2021
- [ ] The Live ended within the last 30 days
- [ ] Your Instagram app is updated

*Each item comes from a rule on Instagram's insights help pages.*

### Insights are missing entirely

Your account is private. Make it public or switch to a professional account. If you've just done that, Instagram says past insights may not show at first.

### Follower or audience numbers are blank

Follower insights need at least 100 followers. Audience demographics need a preset timeframe and more than 100 accounts reached or engaged in that period, so try Last 30 days or Last 90 days instead of a custom range.

### A specific piece of content has no insights

Reel insights only exist for Reels posted on or after May 14, 2021. Live insights disappear 30 days after the broadcast, and they're only in the mobile app. Post and Story insights last up to two years, so anything older won't show. Some metrics, such as Views, are being introduced gradually and may not be on your account yet.

### The numbers look wrong

Instagram says some metrics are estimated and in development, and that Story numbers may be delayed as they populate. Give new content a day before judging it. If a feature seems broken rather than delayed, update the app and report it from Menu, then Help, then Report a problem, as Instagram's [technical problem page](https://help.instagram.com/381579045265733) describes. Our guide to [contacting Instagram support](/blog/how-to-contact-instagram-support) lists every other official channel.

### Your reach dropped suddenly

A sharp drop can have many causes, but check Account Status for removed content or features you can't use before anything else. Our guide to an [Instagram account suspended or restricted](/blog/instagram-account-suspended) explains what Account Status shows and how to request a review.

## How do I switch back to a personal account, and what happens to Insights?

You can switch back any time. Instagram's switching-back page gives this path in the Android and iPhone apps: tap Profile, tap Menu (you may also need to tap Settings), tap Account type and tools, tap Account type, tap Switch account type, then tap Switch to personal account and confirm with Switch to personal.

- You lose access to Meta business tools such as Meta Business Suite and Meta Ads Manager.
- If your account stays public, you keep Your dashboard and insights.
- Instagram's setup page says you'll no longer have access to ads, may lose select tools, and any Facebook Page connected to the professional account is disconnected.
- If you go private as well, insights stop; past data comes back if you return to a public or professional account within 90 days.

## How do I read a Reel's Insights? A worked example

Definitions only go so far, so here's how the numbers fit together for one made-up Reel. Say a 45-second Reel shows 4,000 views, 3,000 viewers, an average watch time of 15 seconds, 160 interactions and 25 follows.

- Views versus viewers: 4,000 views from 3,000 viewers means some people watched more than once. Instagram counts every start or replay as a view, and each account only once as a viewer.
- Average watch time: 15 seconds out of 45 means the typical view lasted a third of the Reel. Instagram calculates it as total watch time divided by initial views, so replays don't inflate it. If the key moment is at second 30, most people never saw it, and the fix is to move it earlier.
- Interactions: 160 likes, comments, saves and shares from 3,000 viewers is about 5.3 percent. That's a number to compare against your own other Reels, not against other accounts.
- Follows: 25 new followers from one Reel tells you this topic brings people in. Make more like it.

The pattern matters more than any single number. Open three or four recent Reels and compare the same metrics side by side. The one with the longest average watch time relative to its length, and the most follows, is the one to learn from. The [engagement rate calculator](/tools/engagement-rate-calculator) works for any network if you want to compare Instagram with your other accounts on the same footing.

## What's a simple monthly Insights routine?

Because account insights only look back 90 days, a short monthly check keeps a record you'd otherwise lose. It takes about 15 minutes.

1. **Record the overview**: Open your dashboard, set the timeframe to Previous month, and note Views, Interactions, New followers and Content you shared. Screenshot it; after 90 days Instagram won't show that month at account level.
2. **Check the audience**: With the same preset timeframe, note top cities, age ranges and, once you have 100 followers, the times they're most active.
3. **Rank your content**: Tap Content you shared to open the content library and sort by reach and interactions. Write down your top three and bottom three posts or Reels.
4. **Look at watch time**: For your top Reels, open View insights and note average watch time against each Reel's length.
5. **Decide one change**: Pick one thing to try next month, such as a new posting time, more Reels on your best topic, or shorter edits. Then check whether it moved the numbers.

If you plan your posts a month at a time, do this check just before you plan. It's the moment the data can actually change what goes on your calendar.

## How should I use Instagram Insights?

Insights are only useful if they change what you do. A few ways to put them to work, each tied to a specific metric:

- Find your best time to post. Total followers shows the times your followers are most active once you have 100 or more. Compare it with our guide to the [best time to post on Instagram](/blog/best-time-to-post-on-instagram), then test.
- Compare formats. Content you shared links to your content library, where you can filter everything by media type, reach, interactions and timeframe. Our comparison of [posts, Stories and Reels](/blog/instagram-post-vs-story-vs-reel) explains what each format is good for.
- Check what grows your audience. Reel insights show Follows per Reel, and Accounts engaged splits followers from non-followers for posts and Stories.
- Measure engagement fairly. Divide interactions by reach or followers to compare posts of different sizes; the [Instagram engagement rate calculator](/tools/instagram-engagement-rate-calculator) does the math.
- Track link clicks. Story insights count link taps; add UTM tags with the [UTM builder](/tools/utm-builder) so your website analytics show which Stories sent visitors.
- Watch for changes after big moves, such as a new posting schedule or a [username change](/blog/how-to-check-if-an-instagram-username-is-available).

If you post the same content to several networks, compare Instagram's numbers with each network's own analytics rather than assuming one result carries over; our guide on [whether cross-posting hurts engagement](/blog/does-cross-posting-hurt-engagement) covers what to look for. And if you schedule posts with a tool, check where its numbers come from. [PostMesh](/platform/instagram) shows likes and comments for the Instagram posts it sends; for reach, saves and the rest, Instagram Insights is where you'd read them. Our [Instagram scheduling guide](/blog/how-to-schedule-instagram-posts) compares the options.

## Questions

### Is there a setting to turn on Instagram Insights?

No. Insights appear for public accounts automatically. Make a private account public, or switch to a professional account, which is always public.

### Can a personal Instagram account see Insights?

Yes, if it's public. Instagram's help pages say public personal accounts find insights in Your dashboard.

### Do I need 100 followers to use Instagram Insights?

Not for everything. Instagram lists a 100-follower minimum for follower insights such as growth, locations and active times, and demographics need more than 100 accounts reached or engaged. Its pages don't tie views or interactions to a follower count.

### Is Instagram Insights free?

Yes. Instagram calls them free insights for public accounts. Ad insights appear only when you boost content, which is limited to professional accounts.

### How far back does Instagram Insights go?

Account insights cover any period within the past 90 days. Post, Reel and Story insights last up to two years, and Live insights 30 days.

### Will switching to a professional account make my account public?

Yes. Instagram says a private account becomes public when you switch, and pending follow requests are accepted automatically.

### Do I lose my Insights if I switch back to personal?

If your account stays public, you keep Your dashboard and insights. If it goes private, you lose access, but past data returns if you go public again within 90 days.

### Can I see Instagram Insights on a computer?

Yes. On instagram.com, select Dashboard in the left menu, then Insights or Your dashboard, and switch between Account and Content.

### Why don't my Reels from 2020 have insights?

Instagram says Reel insights are only available for Reels posted on or after May 14, 2021.

### Can I see who viewed my profile in Insights?

Instagram's insights pages describe counts and demographics, such as viewers, accounts engaged and profile activity, not a list of who visited your profile.
