# Instagram post vs Story vs Reel: what's different and when to use each

Canonical: https://postmesh.app/blog/instagram-post-vs-story-vs-reel

By PostMesh team. Published 2026-10-31; updated 2026-10-31.

A post is a photo or a carousel of up to 20 photos and videos that stays on your profile grid; a Story is a full-screen photo or video that disappears after 24 hours unless you add it to Highlights; a Reel is a video of up to 20 minutes, and most Reels people watch come from accounts they don't follow. Use posts for what you want to keep, Stories for your followers and time-sensitive updates, and Reels to reach new people.

## The short answer

The three formats differ in shape, in how long they last, and above all in who sees them. Instagram's own explanation of ranking, written by Adam Mosseri in 2023, says each part of the app has its own algorithm: people look for their closest friends in Stories, use Explore to discover new things, and go to Reels to be entertained. That's the most useful way to choose between them.

| | Post | Story | Reel |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| What it is | A photo, or a carousel of up to 20 photos and videos | A full-screen photo or video | A video, up to 20 minutes |
| Best shape | 1.91:1 to 3:4, 1,080 px wide | 9:16 recommended | 9:16, accepted from 1.91:1 |
| How long it stays | Until you delete it | 24 hours, unless added to Highlights | Until you delete it |
| Where it lives | Feed and your profile grid | The Story ring and the row at the top of Feed | Reels, and your profile's Reels section |
| Who mostly sees it | Followers, plus some recommended viewers | People who follow you | Mostly people who don't follow you yet |
| Good for | Photos you want to keep, sets, announcements | Everyday updates, links, time-limited news | Reaching new people, tutorials, entertainment |

**What do you want this piece of content to do?**
- Reach people who don't follow me → Make a Reel: vertical, under 3 minutes, no watermark.
- Keep my followers up to date today → Share a Story. Add a link sticker if there's somewhere to send them.
- Stay on my profile for good → Share a post: one photo, or a carousel of up to 20 photos and videos.
- Show several photos together → Share a carousel post. Videos inside it won't count as Reels.

*Choose by the goal first, then make the file fit that format.*

## What's the difference between an Instagram post, Story and Reel?

### Posts

A post is a photo or a carousel that's shared to Feed and stays on your profile grid. Instagram's help article on carousels says one post can hold up to 20 photos and videos, with one caption and location for the whole thing. In your profile, people see the first item with an icon in the corner and swipe through the rest. Likes and comments apply to the whole post, not to individual photos.

One rule surprises people: videos inside a carousel aren't treated as Reels. Instagram's help center says they won't appear in the Reels tab or have Reels features.

### Stories

A Story is a full-screen photo or video. Instagram's help article on Stories says they disappear from your profile, Feed and messages after 24 hours, unless you add them to your profile as Story Highlights. Stories don't appear on your profile grid. Instead, a colored ring appears around your profile picture, and people tap it to watch.

Stories come with creative tools posts don't have: Instagram's help article on Story tips lists Boomerang, Layout for collages, Hands-free recording, music, stickers, drawing and text. You can also add a link sticker, which Meta's business help center says sends people to a website when they tap it.

### Reels

A Reel is a video. Instagram's help article on recording Reels says they can be up to 20 minutes, made of one clip or several, with effects, music or your own audio. If you share a Reel to Explore, it can also appear in the Reels section of your profile. The same article notes that Reels aren't available to every account yet.

The thing that sets Reels apart is the audience. Instagram's ranking explanation says that, as with Explore, most of what people see in Reels is from accounts they don't follow.

## What size should a post, Story and Reel be?

Each format has its own shape. The table combines Instagram's Help Center, which applies when you post in the app or on instagram.com, with Instagram's API reference, which applies when a scheduler posts for you.

| Format | Instagram Help Center | Instagram API (schedulers) | Size to export |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Feed photo | Kept at 320 to 1,080 px wide if the shape is 1.91:1 to 3:4; other shapes cropped | JPEG, 8 MB, 320 to 1,440 px wide, 4:5 to 1.91:1 | 1080 x 1080 square, up to 1080 x 1350 for tall photos that also suit the API |
| Story photo | Not stated | JPEG, 8 MB, 9:16 recommended | 1080 x 1920 |
| Story video | Clips up to 60 seconds; longer videos split into clips | 3 to 60 seconds, 100 MB, 9:16 recommended | 1080 x 1920 |
| Reel | 1.91:1 to 9:16, at least 30 fps and 720 px | MP4 or MOV, 3 seconds to 15 minutes, 300 MB, 23 to 60 fps, 9:16 recommended | 1080 x 1920 at 30 fps |
| Reel cover | 420 x 654 px (about 1:1.55) | Not covered here | 420 x 654 |

For feed photos, Instagram's help article on resolution says a photo between 320 and 1,080 pixels wide keeps its resolution as long as its shape is between 1.91:1 and 3:4, which at 1,080 pixels wide means a height from 566 to 1,440 pixels. A smaller photo is enlarged to 320 pixels wide, a bigger one is sized down to 1,080, and a shape outside that range is cropped. Our guides to [Instagram post size](/blog/instagram-post-size) and [Instagram Reel size](/blog/instagram-reel-size) go deeper, and the free [Instagram photo resizer](/tools/instagram-photo-resizer) crops to square, tall, wide and Story sizes in your browser.

- 20: Photos and videos in one carousel post
- 24 hours: How long a Story stays up
- 20 min: Longest Reel
- 3 min: Longest Reel recommended to new audiences

*From Instagram's Help Center articles on carousels, Stories and Reels.*

> A Reel cover is a different shape from the Reel. Instagram recommends 420 x 654 for covers and says you can't edit a cover after uploading, so keep faces and titles near the middle and choose the cover before you share.

## How long can a post, Story or Reel be?

| Format | In the app (Help Center) | Through the API | What it means for you |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Story video | Up to 60 seconds shows as one clip; longer videos are split into several clips | 3 to 60 seconds | Keep each Story video to 60 seconds, or expect it in parts |
| Reel | Up to 20 minutes | 3 seconds to 15 minutes | Over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences |
| Video in a carousel | Not stated | Not covered here | Treated as part of the post, not as a Reel |

The 3-minute line matters more than the 20-minute limit. Instagram's Reels help article says Reels over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences. A 10-minute Reel still posts and your followers can watch it, but it won't be pushed to people who don't know you. If reaching new viewers is the point, cut it down. Our guide to [posting long videos on Instagram](/blog/how-to-post-a-long-video-on-instagram) covers what to do with longer material.

For Stories, Instagram's help article says a video up to 60 seconds appears as one clip, and a longer video is broken into multiple clips that you can edit with the video trimmer, which it says is currently only on iOS. Through the API, Story videos must be 3 to 60 seconds and 100 MB or less.

## Where does each one appear?

Where a format shows up decides who stumbles on it. Instagram's help article on where your Story appears is the most detailed of the three.

| Place | Post | Story | Reel |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Followers' Feed | Yes | As your picture in the row at the top of Feed | Can appear: Feed mixes videos, photos and carousels |
| Your profile grid | Yes | No | Not stated; Reels shared to Explore appear in your profile's Reels section |
| Ring around your profile picture | No | Yes, on your profile, in Feed and in your Direct inbox | No |
| Explore | Possible, for recommended posts | Public accounts only, possibly in Search and Explore | Yes, if shared to Explore |
| Instagram map | Not stated | If you tagged a location | Not stated |
| After 24 hours | Still there | Gone, unless in Highlights | Still there |

Instagram's help article on Story placement lists a few more spots for public accounts: shared Stories, if you used a sticker tied to a large moment or event such as a holiday or election, and the Instagram map if you tagged a location. It also notes that if you allow others to remix or reshare your content, that content may be indexed and shown in search engine results.

**Post**
- Feed and profile grid
- Stays until deleted
- Followers first, some recommended viewers
- Carousels up to 20 items

**Story**
- Ring on your picture and top of Feed
- Gone after 24 hours unless in Highlights
- People who follow you
- Link stickers, music and questions

**Reel**
- Reels and Explore
- Stays until deleted
- Mostly people who don't follow you
- Up to 20 minutes, 3 for new audiences

*Reels are the only format built mainly for people who don't follow you yet.*

## Who sees posts, Stories and Reels?

Instagram's 2023 ranking explanation is the best official source on this, and it describes each surface separately.

### Feed: followers first, plus recommendations

Feed mixes posts from accounts you follow with recommended posts from accounts you don't follow, plus ads, in a mix of videos, photos and carousels. The most important signals, in rough order, are your activity, information about the post (including how quickly people like, comment, share and save it), information about the person who posted, and your history of interacting with them. Instagram says it also tries not to show too many posts from the same person in a row. Viewers have controls too: posts from accounts they add to Favorites appear higher in their Feed, and the Following view shows the last 30 days of posts from accounts they follow in chronological order.

### Stories: the people closest to you

The Stories you see come from accounts you've chosen to follow, plus ads. Instagram ranks them on viewing history (how often you watch that account's Stories), engagement history (how often you like or message them) and closeness (how likely you are to be friends or family). In practice, Stories reach the followers who already pay attention to you, not strangers.

### Reels: mostly people who don't follow you

Instagram says the majority of Reels people see are from accounts they don't follow. The most important predictions are how likely someone is to reshare a Reel, watch it all the way through, like it, and go to the audio page. The main signals are the viewer's recent activity, their history with you, information about the Reel such as its audio and visuals, and information about you, including popularity.

### Explore: discovery for posts and Reels

Explore is made up of photos and videos from accounts the viewer doesn't follow. Instagram says popularity signals, such as how many people are liking, commenting, sharing and saving a post and how quickly, matter much more in Explore than in Feed or Stories.

## Do Reels get more reach than posts?

Instagram doesn't publish a reach comparison between formats, so be wary of any page quoting a single percentage. What Instagram does say points in one direction: Reels and Explore are where content from accounts people don't follow is shown, while Feed leans on accounts you already follow and Stories on the people closest to you. If your goal is new followers, Reels are the format designed for it.

Reels can also be held back. Instagram's ranking explanation lists Reels it aims to make less visible: low-resolution or watermarked Reels, Reels that are muted or contain borders, Reels that are mostly text, and Reels that have already been posted on Instagram. The last one matters if you're tempted to repost the same video, and the watermark rule matters if you're moving videos over from another app.

> Reels over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences, according to Instagram's help center. That's a second reason a Reel might reach mostly followers.

Posts aren't dead weight, though. They stay on your grid, which is what people see when they visit your profile, and a carousel lets you show up to 20 photos in one place. For timing, our guide to the [best time to post on Instagram](/blog/best-time-to-post-on-instagram) summarizes the published studies by format where they exist.

## When should you use a post, a Story or a Reel?

Most accounts use all three, for different jobs. Here are common situations and the format that fits each, based on what Instagram says about where each one goes.

### You have a set of photos from an event or shoot

Make a carousel post. It holds up to 20 photos and videos, stays on your grid, and people swipe through it. Pick one orientation, since it applies to every item. If you have one wide panorama, the free [Instagram carousel splitter](/tools/instagram-carousel-splitter) cuts it into tiles that swipe as one image.

### You're announcing something time-sensitive

Use a Story with a link sticker for the details and the link, and a post if the news should still be on your profile next month. Stories reach your engaged followers quickly and disappear on their own after 24 hours, which suits a sale ending tonight or a schedule change.

### You want new people to find you

Make a Reel. Keep it vertical, under 3 minutes, and free of another app's watermark. A tutorial, a before-and-after or a quick tip all suit the format, since Instagram predicts whether people will watch to the end and reshare.

### You're sharing everyday, behind-the-scenes moments

Use Stories. Questions, music and link stickers give people something to tap or answer, and Instagram ranks Stories partly on engagement history, such as likes and messages. If a Story deserves a longer life, add it to a Highlight.

### You only have words, no photo

Use a Story. Instagram's help article on Story tools describes a Create option for making a Story without a photo or video to start from: you can type something, add a GIF or ask a question. Feed posts and Reels both need a photo or a video, so a text-only update has nowhere else to go unless you turn it into an image first.

### You want only some followers to see it

Use a Story shared to Close Friends. Instagram's ranking explanation describes Close Friends as a way to share Stories with just the people closest to you. Posts and Reels go to everyone who can see your account.

### You're promoting a product

Use all three: a post for clear product photos on your grid, a Reel showing it in use for reach, and a Story with a link sticker to the product page.

## How long does each one stay up?

- When you share: Posts and Reels go to your profile and Feed; a Story appears in the ring and the row at the top of Feed.
- 24 hours: The Story disappears from your profile, Feed and messages, unless added to a Highlight. It's saved to your Stories archive.
- 48 hours: The Story viewer list is no longer available in your archive.
- Up to 2 years: Insights for posts stay available, according to Instagram.
- Until you remove it: Posts, Reels and Highlights stay on your profile.

*From Instagram's Help Center articles on Stories, Story viewers, Highlights and post insights.*

Instagram's help article on Story Highlights says stories you add as Highlights stay visible until you remove them, even after the original Story has disappeared, and that anyone you've allowed to see your Story can also see your Highlights. Stories are also saved to your Stories archive, which you can turn off in Settings.

> Instagram's help article on Story visibility says Stories shared publicly, including those in your archive, will be used to improve AI at Meta unless you delete them from your archive or make your account private.

## Can you turn a post into a Story or a Reel?

### Share a post to your Story

Yes. Instagram's help article says you can tap Share below a post in Feed, then Add to story. For other people's posts, it only works if their account is public and they allow resharing, and it isn't available to everyone. Anyone who watches the Story can see who originally posted it. If you have a public account and don't want your posts reshared, turn it off under Sharing and reuse in your settings.

Instagram: Share › Add to story › Next › Share

*Works on your own posts, and on others' posts if their account is public and allows resharing.*

### Keep a Story with Highlights

A Story becomes permanent by adding it to a Highlight on your profile. It's the closest thing to turning a Story into a post.

### Turn a carousel video into a Reel

Not after the fact. A video inside a carousel isn't a Reel. If you want a video to reach Reels viewers, share it on its own as a Reel. Avoid posting the identical video again later as a Reel, since Instagram aims to make Reels that have already been posted on Instagram less visible.

## What can you schedule ahead of time?

Not every tool handles every format. Here's what each official route and PostMesh can schedule, from their own documentation.

| Route | Posts | Carousels | Reels | Stories |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Instagram app scheduler | Yes | Yes | Yes | Not listed in its help article |
| Meta Business Suite | Yes | Up to 10 photos | Yes, from video | Yes, up to 10 items |
| Instagram's API (third-party tools) | Yes, JPEG | Yes, up to 20 items | Yes, 3 seconds to 15 minutes | Yes, 3 to 60 second videos |
| PostMesh | Yes, one photo | No | Yes, every video is a Reel shared to your feed | No |

Instagram's help article on scheduling says the in-app scheduler works for Reels, photos and carousel posts on public accounts, up to 25 posts a day and 30 days ahead. Meta Business Suite can schedule posts, Reels and Stories, and the API supports all formats, though each tool decides what it uses.

In PostMesh, each Instagram post is one photo or one video. Photos can be JPEG, PNG, WebP or GIF up to 40 MB, and Instagram gets a JPEG copy sized to fit 4:5 to 1.91:1. Videos can be MP4 or MOV from 3 seconds to 15 minutes and up to 300 MB, and every video is published as a Reel and shared to your feed. Captions can be up to 2,200 characters with 20 mentions, and Instagram's help center now allows 5 hashtags per post. PostMesh publishes through Instagram's API after you connect with Instagram Login. Carousels and Stories aren't supported. See the [Instagram page](/platform/instagram) for details, or [how to schedule Instagram posts](/blog/how-to-schedule-instagram-posts) for every scheduling route.

## How do you measure each format?

Each format gives you different feedback, so don't compare raw numbers across them.

- Posts: Instagram's help article on post insights says a public account, personal or professional, can see views, interactions (likes, comments, saves and shares) and profile activity for up to two years.
- Stories: open your Story and swipe up to see the number and usernames of viewers for each photo or video. Instagram says only you can see this list, it's available for up to 48 hours, and the view count includes replays.
- Reels: you see likes by tapping the view count below the video. Instagram also has a separate insights article for Reels.

Our guides to [turning on Instagram Insights](/blog/how-to-turn-on-instagram-insights) and [seeing who liked your Instagram post](/blog/how-to-see-who-liked-your-instagram-post) walk through each screen.

## What mistakes make each format underperform?

**Avoid these before you post**
- [ ] A horizontal video in a Reel with borders around it
- [ ] Another app's watermark on a Reel
- [ ] A Reel that's mostly text, or muted
- [ ] Reposting a Reel already posted on Instagram
- [ ] Reels over 3 minutes when you want new viewers
- [ ] A Story video over 60 seconds you didn't want split
- [ ] A tall photo cut off because it's taller than 3:4
- [ ] Choosing a Reel cover you can't change later

*The first four come from Instagram's ranking explanation; the rest from its Help Center.*

Quality problems often trace back to the upload, not the format. If Stories look soft, our guide on [why Instagram Stories look blurry](/blog/why-is-my-instagram-story-blurry) covers the settings and file sizes behind it. If you're moving a video from YouTube, see [how to post a YouTube video on Instagram](/blog/how-to-post-a-youtube-video-on-instagram), which covers rights, downloads and avoiding borders.

## What to do next

Pick one goal per piece of content, then export it at the right size. These steps cover the three formats.

1. **Decide the goal**: New viewers: Reel. Followers today: Story. Something to keep on your profile: post.
2. **Export at the right size**: 1,080 px wide photos between 1.91:1 and 3:4 for posts, and 1080 x 1920 for Stories and Reels, at 30 fps or more for video.
3. **Check the length**: Reels under 3 minutes for reach; Story videos at 60 seconds or less per clip.
4. **Write the caption**: Check it with the [Instagram caption counter](/tools/instagram-caption-character-counter) and pick a few hashtags with the [Instagram hashtag generator](/tools/instagram-hashtag-generator).
5. **Post or schedule it**: Use the app, Meta Business Suite or a scheduler. If you're posting from a computer, see [posting on Instagram from a desktop](/blog/can-you-post-on-instagram-from-desktop).
6. **Check the results**: Look at insights after a few days and compare each format with itself, not with the others.

If the same video is going to TikTok and YouTube Shorts too, our guide to [cross-posting to multiple platforms](/blog/how-to-cross-post-to-multiple-platforms) covers adapting it for each network.

## Questions

### Is a Reel the same as a video post?

A video you share on its own goes through Instagram's Reels flow. Videos inside a carousel aren't Reels: Instagram says they don't appear in the Reels tab or get Reels features.

### Do Stories show up on my profile?

Not on your grid. While a Story is live, a colored ring appears around your profile picture. After 24 hours it's gone unless you add it to a Highlight.

### Are Reels better than posts for growth?

Instagram says most Reels people watch come from accounts they don't follow, which makes Reels the format built for reaching new people. Posts mostly reach existing followers and stay on your grid.

### What size is an Instagram Story?

Instagram's API reference recommends 9:16 for Stories to avoid cropping or blank space, which is 1080 x 1920 at full width.

### How long can an Instagram Story video be?

A video up to 60 seconds appears as one Story clip. Longer videos are split into several clips.

### Can I post a carousel as a Reel?

No. A carousel is a post. If you want Reels reach for a video, share it on its own as a Reel.

### Why isn't my long Reel reaching new people?

Instagram says Reels over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences. Trim it to 3 minutes or less.

### Can I reshare someone else's post to my Story?

Only if their account is public and they allow resharing. Viewers of your Story can see who originally posted it.

### Can I schedule Instagram Stories?

Not with Instagram's in-app scheduler, which covers posts, carousels and Reels. Meta Business Suite and some third-party tools can schedule Stories. PostMesh doesn't publish Stories.

### Do Story Highlights expire?

No. Instagram says Highlights stay visible until you remove them, to anyone you've allowed to see your Story.
