Restricting someone on Instagram hides their new comments on your posts from everyone but them until you approve one, moves their messages to Message requests, stops their comment notifications, and stops them seeing when you're online or have read their messages. Unlike blocking, they can still follow you and see your posts.

Restrict is Instagram's in-between option. It's for the classmate, coworker, relative or commenter you'd like to keep at arm's length without the visible break of a block or an unfollow. Because it's quiet, it's also widely misunderstood: people assume it hides their posts, or that the other person gets told, or that it works on Threads too. This guide goes through exactly what Instagram's help pages say restrict does, every way to turn it on and off on the app and the web, what the restricted person can and can't see, and how it compares with blocking, muting, removing a follower and Limits. Everything here was checked against Instagram Help on October 31, 2026.

## The short answer

When you restrict someone, Instagram changes four things. Their new comments on your posts are visible only to them unless you approve them. You stop getting notifications about their future comments. Your chat with them moves to Message requests, and you can read their messages without them knowing you've seen them. And they can't see when you're online or whether you've read their messages. Nothing else changes: they still follow you, still see your posts and stories, and you still appear in their lists.

**What changes for them**
- New comments visible only to them unless you approve
- Messages go to your Message requests
- Can't see when you're online
- Can't see if you've read their messages

**What stays the same**
- They keep following you
- Instagram's page doesn't say your posts or stories are hidden
- They can still comment and message
- You can still see their content

*From Instagram Help's page on restricting or unrestricting someone.*

| Area | After you restrict someone |
| --- | --- |
| Their new comments on your posts | Visible only to them, until you tap See comment and Approve |
| Comment notifications | You won't receive notifications for their future comments |
| Your existing chat | Moves from your main inbox to Message Requests |
| Their future messages | Go straight to Message Requests |
| Reading their messages | You can see them without the person knowing you've seen them |
| Your online status | They can't see when you're online |
| Your read receipts | They can't see if you've read their messages |
| Follow, posts and lists | Instagram's page lists no change |

## What happens when you restrict someone on Instagram?

Instagram's [restrict page](https://help.instagram.com/2638385956221960) is the source for everything in this section. It describes restrict through three areas: comments, messages and your activity.

### Comments

A restricted person can still comment on your posts, and to them it looks like any other comment. To everyone else, it's hidden. You choose what happens next: tap See comment to read it, then Approve and Approve again if you want others to see it, or delete it, or leave it alone. You also won't get notifications for any future comments from that person, so you don't have to see them unless you go looking.

Note the word new. Instagram's page says restrict applies to their new comments. Comments they left before you restricted them aren't covered by that description, so if an old comment bothers you, delete it from the post. Instagram's page on [managing multiple comments](https://help.instagram.com/289376615404536) says you can select and delete up to 25 comments at a time.

### Messages and message requests

Your chat with the restricted person moves out of your main inbox and into Message Requests, and anything new they send goes there automatically. You can open and read their messages without them knowing you've seen them, then choose to delete a message, block them, or unrestrict them. If you share a group chat with someone you've restricted, Instagram warns you that you'll see a restricted account's messages and lets you stay or leave.

### Online status and read receipts

Restrict also hides two signals from that one person: when you're online and whether you've read their messages. Normally, Instagram's [activity status page](https://help.instagram.com/1164377657035425) says people you follow and anyone you message can see when you were last active or are currently active, and its [read receipts page](https://help.instagram.com/1586876252167004) says read receipts let others in a chat see when you've viewed their message. Restricting is the way to hide both from a single account without changing them for everyone. If you'd rather hide your status from everyone, our guide to [turning off active status on Instagram](/blog/how-to-turn-off-active-status-on-instagram) covers that setting.

### What restrict doesn't change

- The follow. Instagram's page doesn't say restricting removes them as a follower or unfollows them.
- Your posts, stories and profile. The restrict page lists no change to what they can see of your content. Use the hide-story setting or block for that.
- Your lists. They stay in your Followers or Following, and you stay in theirs.
- What you see of them. Restrict is about their access to you. Mute is the tool for hiding their posts from you.

> Instagram's restrict page doesn't mention tags, mentions, story replies or likes. If you need to stop tags and mentions from someone, the block or Limits tools described below cover those.

## What can a restricted person see and do?

Putting the restrict page together with Instagram's other help pages, here is the view from the other side.

| Can they… | Answer | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| See your posts and stories? | Instagram doesn't say restrict hides them | Restrict page lists no change |
| Keep following you? | Yes, the page lists no change to the follow | Restrict page |
| Comment on your posts? | Yes, but only they see the comment unless you approve it | Restrict page |
| Message you? | Yes, it lands in your Message requests | Restrict page |
| See if you read their message? | No | Restrict page |
| See when you're online? | No | Restrict page |
| Find your profile in search? | Not addressed; blocking is what stops search | Unfollow and block pages |

## How do I restrict someone on Instagram?

Instagram's restrict page gives four ways to do it. Pick whichever matches where you are when you decide.

### From their profile

1. **Open their profile**: Tap their username on a Feed post or story, or tap Search and type their username.
2. **Tap Options**: It's in the top right of their profile on iPhone, iPad and Android.
3. **Tap Restrict**: To undo it later, the same menu shows Unrestrict.

Instagram: Their profile › Options › Restrict

*On instagram.com, click Options on their profile, then Restrict.*

On a computer, the page says to click their username from their Feed or story post, or click Search and type their username, then click Options in the top right and click Restrict. If you use the Instagram Lite app for Android, this profile route is the only way to restrict someone.

### From a chat

1. **Open the chat**: Tap Messages at the bottom, then the chat with the person.
2. **Open their details**: Tap the person's name at the top of the chat.
3. **Restrict**: Tap Options in the top right, then Restrict, then Restrict again to confirm.

### From a comment

This is the fastest route when a comment is the problem. Go to your post, tap Comments, tap and hold the comment, then tap Restrict account. Instagram's managing comments page describes the same tap-and-hold route for restricting while you're cleaning up several comments at once.

1. Open your post
2. Tap Comments
3. Tap and hold their comment
4. Tap Restrict account

*Tap Unrestrict account in the same place to undo it.*

### From settings

In the iPhone and Android apps, go to your profile, tap Menu in the top right, and below How others can interact with you, tap Restricted. Tap Next, search for the account, and tap Restrict next to their username. This route is handy when the person hasn't commented or messaged recently.

Instagram, How others can interact with you:
- Messages and story replies: Requests, activity status, read receipts
- Restricted: Restrict or unrestrict accounts (tap this)
- Limit interactions: Limit groups of accounts
- Sharing and reuse: Who can share your content

*Rows Instagram's help pages place below How others can interact with you. Your app may show more rows or a different order.*

## How do I see comments and messages from someone I restricted?

Restrict hides things from other people and from your notifications, not from you. You can always check what a restricted person has sent.

### Their comments

Open the post and its comments. Per Instagram's restrict page, a restricted person's comment shows an option to See comment, which reveals what it says, or Delete. After tapping See comment, you can tap Approve, then Approve again, to make it visible to everyone, or tap Delete. If you leave it, it stays visible only to the person who wrote it.

### Their messages

Look in Message requests, not your main chats. Instagram's [message requests page](https://help.instagram.com/585369912141614) says requests stay in that folder until you accept them, and that you can choose in Menu, then Messages and story replies, then Message requests, whether requests go to the folder or whether to receive them at all. Reading a restricted person's message there doesn't tell them you've seen it, according to the restrict page.

### How restrict fits with your inbox settings

Instagram's message requests page explains how the rest of your inbox behaves, which helps put restrict in context. Messages from people you follow normally go straight to your Chats list, and requests from everyone else wait in the Message Requests folder. Restrict overrides that for one person: even if you follow them, their chat moves to requests. You can also choose who can add you to group chats, either everyone or only people you follow. Blocking goes further than restrict here: the same page says accounts you've blocked can't send you message requests or add you to groups at all.

## How do I unrestrict someone on Instagram?

Every route that restricts also unrestricts. On their profile, tap Options, then Unrestrict. On a comment, tap and hold, then Unrestrict account. In settings, go to Menu, then Restricted below How others can interact with you, and tap Unrestrict next to their name. From a restricted chat in Message requests, Instagram's page says you can choose to unrestrict them directly.

### Where to see everyone you've restricted

On a computer, Instagram's restrict page says to click More in the bottom left, then Settings, then Restricted accounts below How others can interact with you. You'll see the list of accounts you've restricted, with Unrestrict next to each one. In the app, the Restricted screen in settings is the same list.

instagram.com: More › Settings › Restricted accounts › Unrestrict

## Does someone know if you restrict them on Instagram?

Instagram's restrict page for Instagram doesn't say either way whether the person is notified. What it does describe points to a quiet tool: you can read their messages without them knowing you've seen them, and their own comments still appear to them as normal. Instagram's [Threads restrict page](https://help.instagram.com/931579497963593) is more direct about Threads: it says Threads won't let people know if you restricted their profile. Instagram's [Limits page](https://help.instagram.com/4106887762741654) likewise describes limiting groups of accounts without them knowing. For Instagram's own restrict feature, the documented answer is that Instagram doesn't mention any notification.

If you're on the other end and suspect you've been restricted, there's no documented way to check, and we won't offer workarounds. Restrict exists so people can set a boundary without a confrontation. If a conversation matters to you, the direct route is to ask the person.

## Restrict vs block vs mute vs remove follower

These four tools solve different problems. Here's how they compare according to Instagram's help pages.

| | Restrict | Block | Mute | Remove follower |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| What it's for | Quietly limiting someone's interactions | Cutting contact | Seeing less of someone | Taking someone out of your followers |
| Their comments | Hidden from others unless approved | Their existing likes and comments are removed | No change | No change |
| Messages | Go to Message requests | Neither of you can message the other | You can mute their messages | No change |
| Can they see your posts? | Restrict page lists no change | No | Yes | Not on a private account |
| Follow | No change | Ends | No change | They stop following you |
| Your online status | Hidden from them | Not addressed | Not addressed | Not addressed |
| Notified? | Not stated | No | No | No |

### When to block instead

Block when you don't want the person to see you at all. Instagram's [unfollow page](https://help.instagram.com/286340048138725) says a blocked person can't see your photos or videos or search for your account, and isn't notified. Its [blocking page](https://help.instagram.com/447613741984126) adds that their likes and comments are removed from your posts and don't come back if you unblock, they can't mention or tag you, and messages they send while blocked are never delivered. When you block from the app, you can also block other accounts they have or create, except ones you already follow. Instagram's [block page](https://help.instagram.com/454180787965921) also notes that if you don't want to go that far, you can restrict them instead.

### When to unfollow instead

If you simply don't want someone in your Following list, unfollow them. Instagram's unfollow page says to go to their profile, tap Following, then Unfollow, and that people aren't notified. Unfollowing doesn't affect their comments or messages, so pair it with restrict if those are the issue.

### When to mute instead

Mute when the problem is what you see, not what they do. Instagram's [mute page](https://help.instagram.com/469042960409432) says muting hides someone's posts, stories or messages from you, and Instagram won't tell them. It doesn't limit their comments or hide anything of yours from them. You can restrict and mute the same person if you want both effects.

### When to remove a follower instead

Remove a follower when your account is private and you don't want someone seeing your posts. Instagram's [remove a follower page](https://help.instagram.com/413012278753813) says this works on private accounts and the person isn't notified. Our guide to [hiding followers on Instagram](/blog/how-to-hide-followers-on-instagram) explains what a private account hides and what it doesn't.

**What's the problem with this person?**
- Their comments or messages → Restrict. Comments need your approval and chats move to requests.
- I don't want them seeing me at all → Block. They can't see your posts or find your account.
- I just don't want to see their posts → Mute. Nothing changes for them.
- A wave of accounts, not one person → Use Limits for a set period, up to four weeks at a time.

*From Instagram's help pages on restricting, blocking, muting and Limits.*

## Can I restrict lots of accounts at once?

Restrict works one account at a time, but Instagram has two tools for bigger problems.

### Managing many comments

On a post with a pile of unwanted comments, Instagram's managing comments page says to tap Comments, tap Options, then Select multiple comments. You can then hide or delete comments or block the accounts in one go, up to 25 comments at a time. To restrict, you still tap and hold a comment from each account.

### Limits for groups of accounts

If you're being flooded by accounts you don't know, Limits is the tool. Instagram's Limits page says you can temporarily limit interactions from accounts that aren't on your Close Friends list, from recent followers who followed you in the last week, or from accounts that don't follow you. Their new comments are hidden unless you approve them, new chats go to a Hidden requests folder in Message requests, and they can't reply to your stories, tag or mention you, or remix your content. You can set it for up to four weeks at a time and extend it. To turn it on, go to Menu, then Limit interactions below How others can interact with you, choose what and who to limit, and tap Turn on.

- Turn on: Choose what to limit and who: non-Close Friends, recent followers or non-followers
- While on: Their new comments are hidden and new chats go to Hidden requests
- Up to 4 weeks: You pick when to be reminded, and can extend it as long as you like
- Turn off: Comments made while limited stay hidden; new ones show unless you restrict or block

*From Instagram Help's page on temporarily limiting people from interacting with you.*

### Report as well as restrict

Restrict changes what you see; it doesn't put anyone's behavior in front of Instagram. If comments or messages break Instagram's rules, report them too. The bullying and harassment page says that when the problem is in direct messages, you should report the chat rather than the account, because the team that reviews profiles can't see messages. For vanish mode, Instagram's [vanish mode reporting page](https://help.instagram.com/3481837395194926) says you can report messages for up to 14 days after they disappear, and that reporting a single message also offers options to restrict or block the account that sent it.

### Hidden Words and who can reach you

For unwanted comments that come from many directions, filters do more than restricting accounts one by one. Instagram's bullying and harassment page says Hidden Words and Advanced Comment Filtering are on by default and hide comments, and direct messages, that may contain profanity, bullying or spam. You can add your own list of words, emojis or phrases, or search for word lists that already exist. Advanced Comment Filtering doesn't hide comments from people you follow or people who follow you.

The same page describes reachability settings that work alongside restrict. You can leave direct messages open to anyone, allow only people you follow to message you with everyone else going to a separate inbox, or turn direct messages off. There are also settings for who can tag you, who can mention you and who can comment on your posts, and you can turn off comments on a single post from the post itself.

## Does restricting on Instagram restrict them on Threads or Facebook?

Not on Threads. Instagram's Threads restrict page says restricting someone on Instagram doesn't restrict them on Threads, and the reverse, so you have to do it in each app. On Threads, restricting stops notifications when that person interacts with your content, may hide their replies or require your approval, and moves their chat to your Requests folder. The Threads page also says restricted users can still see your Threads content and reply. Instagram's pages don't say anything about restrict carrying over to Facebook, so treat Facebook as separate too. Our guide to [making Facebook private](/blog/how-to-make-facebook-private) covers Facebook's own privacy settings.

## Why can't I restrict someone, or why didn't it work?

### I can't find Restrict

Check which app you're in. Instagram's page says that in Instagram Lite for Android, you can only restrict someone from their profile. On a computer, restricting from a profile and viewing your restricted list work from instagram.com, as described above.

### Their old comments are still showing

Restrict covers new comments. Delete older ones from the post, one at a time or up to 25 at once with Select multiple comments.

### They're still messaging me

That's expected. Restrict doesn't stop messages, it moves them to Message requests. To stop messages entirely, block the person, or change your message request setting so requests aren't received at all.

### I still see their messages in a group chat

Instagram says you'll get a warning that you'll see a restricted account's messages in a group, and you can choose to stay or leave. Restrict doesn't remove them from shared groups.

## When restrict is the right choice

Instagram's [bullying and harassment page](https://help.instagram.com/464473649316860) lists restricting alongside reporting, blocking and hiding or deleting comments as moderation tools. In practice, restrict fits best when a block would cause more trouble than it solves. If someone is threatening you or sharing private images, report them and block instead. Restrict quiets an interaction; it doesn't stop someone seeing you. Here's how it plays out in a few common situations.

### Someone you'll keep seeing offline

A classmate, coworker or relative who comments too much or messages at odd hours is the classic case. A block is visible the moment they look for your profile, because they can't find it. With restrict, their comments wait for your approval, their messages sit in requests until you feel like reading them, and they can't see when you're online or whether you've read anything. If you want a little more distance, hide your story from them too. They can still see your posts, so this works best when the issue is contact, not visibility.

### An ex who keeps messaging

Restrict moves their messages out of your main inbox so they stop appearing next to your friends' chats, and you can read them, or not, without a read receipt. That's often enough for a cooling-off period. If you want the messages to stop entirely, restrict won't do it: block them, which Instagram says keeps any messages they send from being delivered, even later if you unblock. If they follow you and you'd rather they didn't see your posts either, make your account private and remove them as a follower, or block.

### One persistent commenter

Restrict from the comment itself: tap and hold it, then tap Restrict account. Their next comments are visible only to them, so other readers don't see the back-and-forth, and you stop getting notifications about them. Delete the comments they left before you restricted them. If one commenter becomes several accounts, Limits for accounts that don't follow you, or for recent followers, covers the group.

### Creators and businesses

Instagram's [professional accounts page](https://help.instagram.com/138925576505882) says business and creator accounts can't be set to private, so going private isn't an option when something goes wrong. That makes restrict, Hidden Words and Limits the main tools for a public account. Restrict is especially useful for a customer or fan whose comments derail threads, since blocking them is visible and can turn into a public complaint.

### Teens and parents

Teen Accounts start with some of these protections already on. Instagram's [Teen Account settings page](https://help.instagram.com/455298907304715) says they're private by default, only receive messages and group chats from accounts they follow or are connected to, and have tags and mentions set to people they follow. Restrict sits on top of that for the people a teen does follow but wants to keep quieter. Teens under 16 need a parent's or guardian's approval through supervision to make those defaults less protective. Restricting and blocking aren't among the settings Instagram lists as needing that approval.

**After you restrict someone**
- [ ] Delete any older comments of theirs you don't want shown
- [ ] Check Message requests now and then
- [ ] Hide your story from them if you want more distance
- [ ] Restrict them on Threads too, if they're there
- [ ] Report anything threatening, then block

*Each step uses an Instagram setting from its help pages.*

## Restrict and the posts you schedule

Restrict applies to comments on every post on your account, however it was published. If you schedule posts ahead, it's worth a quick check of comments after each one goes live, since a restricted person's comments wait for your approval and won't notify you. You can [schedule Instagram posts](/blog/how-to-schedule-instagram-posts) in the Instagram app, in Meta Business Suite or with a scheduler. PostMesh publishes photos and Reels to Instagram and shows likes and comments only for posts sent through Instagram's API, so comment moderation, including restrict, always happens in Instagram itself. The details are on our [Instagram page](/platform/instagram), and our [Threads page](/platform/threads) covers that network.

## Questions

### Does restricting someone on Instagram unfollow them?

No. Instagram's restrict page lists no change to following. They stay in your lists and you stay in theirs.

### Can a restricted person see my stories?

Instagram's restrict page doesn't say stories are hidden. To stop someone seeing your stories, hide your story from them in Story, live and location, or block them.

### Will they know I read their message if I restrict them?

No. Instagram says you can see a restricted person's message without them knowing you've seen it, and they can't see whether you've read their messages.

### Can a restricted person still comment on my posts?

Yes, but their new comments are visible only to them unless you tap See comment and approve one. You don't get notifications for them.

### Is restrict the same as block on Instagram?

No. Blocking stops someone seeing your posts or finding your account and ends the follow. Restrict only limits their comments and messages and hides your online and read status from them.

### Does Instagram notify someone when you restrict them?

Instagram's restrict page doesn't mention any notification. Its Threads page says Threads won't let people know they've been restricted.

### Where do messages from a restricted account go?

To your Message requests folder. Your existing chat moves there too, and new messages go there automatically.

### Can I restrict someone on Instagram from a computer?

Yes. On instagram.com, open their profile, click Options and click Restrict. You can see and remove restrictions in Settings under Restricted accounts.

### Does restricting on Instagram also restrict on Threads?

No. Instagram says restricting on one app doesn't restrict on the other, so you need to do it in both.

### Can I restrict someone who doesn't follow me?

Instagram's page doesn't require a follow. You can restrict from their profile, a comment, a chat or settings, where you search for any account.
