# When does YouTube start paying you?

Canonical: https://postmesh.app/blog/when-does-youtube-start-paying-you

By PostMesh team. Published 2026-10-31; updated 2026-10-31.

YouTube starts paying you only after your channel is accepted into the YouTube Partner Program, a review YouTube says typically takes about a month. After that, each month's earnings are paid between the 21st and 26th of the following month, once your balance reaches the payment threshold ($100 in the US) and your address is verified.

How long it takes to make money on YouTube comes down to four waits in a row. The first is reaching the Partner Program thresholds, which depends entirely on your channel and has no typical length. The other three are set by YouTube and Google: the channel review, setting up and verifying AdSense for YouTube, and the monthly payment cycle. This guide covers each one from YouTube's own help pages, with a worked example of a first payment, every hold that can delay it, and the changes YouTube has announced for February 1, 2027.

## The short answer

Once you meet the thresholds and apply, plan on about a month for the review. Then earnings build up month by month. Each month is finalized between the 7th and 12th of the next month and paid between the 21st and 26th, as long as your balance has reached the payment threshold and nothing is on hold. Along the way, Google mails a PIN to verify your address, which YouTube says usually takes 3 to 4 weeks to arrive. Put together, most of the wait after approval is the monthly cycle plus the PIN.

- When you reach a threshold: Apply from the Earn tab in YouTube Studio
- About 1 month: YouTube reviews your channel
- After approval: Earnings start building in YouTube Analytics
- Balance reaches $10 (US): Google mails a PIN, which takes 3 to 4 weeks
- 7th to 12th of next month: Last month's earnings are finalized
- 21st to 26th: Payment issued if your balance is at least $100 (US)

*Dates from YouTube Help. Thresholds shown in US dollars.*

| Stage | How long it takes | Who controls it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Reaching the thresholds | Depends on your channel; there's no typical time | You |
| Partner Program review | Typically about 1 month, sometimes longer | YouTube |
| AdSense for YouTube approval | Can take several days | Google |
| PIN by mail | Usually 3 to 4 weeks; 4 months to enter it | Google and the post |
| Earnings finalized | 7th to 12th of the following month | YouTube |
| Payment issued | 21st to 26th, if your balance meets the threshold by the 20th | YouTube |
| Money arrives | EFT up to 7 business days; check 2 to 4 weeks | Your bank or the post |

## How many subscribers and views do you need to get paid on YouTube?

There are two tiers today, set out in YouTube Help's [Partner Program overview](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/72851) and [expanded Partner Program page](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/13429240). Which one you reach decides what you can earn from.

### The two tiers

| Tier | Requirements | What you can earn from |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Fan funding and Shopping | 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 public watch hours in 12 months or 3 million public Shorts views in 90 days | Channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks, Jewels and gifts, Shopping |
| Full Partner Program | 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 public watch hours in 12 months or 10 million public Shorts views in 90 days | Everything above, plus ad and YouTube Premium revenue sharing |

### What counts as a watch hour or a Shorts view

Qualified watch hours come from public long-form videos. Watch hours from Shorts in the Shorts Feed don't count toward the 4,000, so a channel that posts only Shorts has to qualify through the Shorts views route instead. Those Shorts views have to come from public Shorts in the Shorts Feed. The windows roll: the 4,000 hours are counted over the last 12 months and the Shorts views over the last 90 days, so old views drop off as time passes.

### The other requirements

Meeting the numbers isn't enough on its own. YouTube also requires you to follow its channel monetization policies, live in a country or region where the program is available, have no active Community Guidelines strikes, turn on 2-Step Verification for your Google Account, have access to advanced features on YouTube, and have one active AdSense for YouTube account linked to the channel.

### Where the 500-subscriber tier is offered

The fan funding tier is only available in the countries and regions listed on the expanded program page, which include the US, UK, Canada, Australia, India, Brazil, Japan and most of Europe. YouTube says creators outside those places see no change to the program, so they go straight to the 1,000-subscriber tier.

**Where is your channel right now?**
- Under 500 subscribers → Not eligible yet. Select Get notified in the Earn tab so YouTube emails you when you qualify.
- 500+ subscribers with the uploads and hours or Shorts views → Apply for fan funding and Shopping if you're in an eligible country. Ad revenue comes later.
- 1,000+ subscribers with 4,000 hours or 10M Shorts views → Apply for the full program, including ad and Premium revenue.
- Applying on or after February 1, 2027 → You'll need 8,000 hours in 365 days or 20M Shorts views in 90 days for the full program.

## What changes in the YouTube Partner Program on February 1, 2027?

YouTube announced these changes on its [official blog on August 10, 2026](https://blog.youtube/news-and-events/youtube-partner-program-updates-2027-new-opportunities-earn/), and its [Changes to the YPP](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/12843009) help page lists the details.

- 8,000: Watch hours in 365 days for new applicants
- 20M: Or Shorts views in 90 days for new applicants
- 10M: Shorts views in 90 days to earn from the Creator Pool
- Jan 31, 2027: Deadline to accept the updated terms

*From YouTube Help's Changes to the YPP page.*

### Higher entry thresholds for new creators

New creators will need 1,000 subscribers plus 8,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days, or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. That doubles both routes. YouTube says creators already in the program aren't affected, and the fan funding and Shopping tier keeps its current thresholds: 500 subscribers plus 3,000 watch hours in the last year or 3 million Shorts views in the last 90 days.

> If you're close to 4,000 hours today, timing matters. YouTube says the higher thresholds apply to new creators starting February 1, 2027, but its pages don't say how an application submitted before that date and still in review afterward is handled.

### A floor for Shorts earnings

To earn from the Shorts Creator Pool each month, a channel will need 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. Missing it doesn't remove you from the program or affect long-form earnings. YouTube also describes new incentives for channels below that level, such as bonuses for YouTube Shopping, and a 45% direct share from Shorts ads targeted at groups of five or fewer channels.

### New activity rules

A channel counts as active if it meets any one of these: 1,000 watch hours in the past 365 days, 1 million Shorts views in the last 90 days, or 2 long-form videos or 5 Shorts uploaded every 90 days. Channels that fall below get a 90-day window to meet the watch hours or Shorts views requirement. YouTube says most creators in the program already meet these thresholds.

### Terms you need to accept by January 31, 2027

Creators need to review and accept the updated terms in YouTube Studio by January 31, 2027 to keep fully monetizing. Creators who turned on fan funding before 2023 are on an older addendum and must accept the Commerce Product Module by then too, or they stop earning from those features until they accept. To accept, sign in to YouTube Studio, open the notification or the Earn tab, review each module, check the box, select Next and then Submit.

## How do I get access to advanced features?

Advanced features are a Partner Program requirement that people often miss, because you get them separately from any subscriber count. YouTube's [feature access page](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/9890437) lists applying for monetization among the advanced features, alongside things like clickable links in descriptions, chapters and pinned comments.

### The three levels

| Level | How you get it | Examples of what it includes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Standard | Creating a channel, with no active Community Guidelines strikes | Uploading and basic tools |
| Intermediate | Verifying your phone number | Videos over 15 minutes, live streaming on a computer, custom thumbnails, podcasts |
| Advanced | Enough channel history, or verifying with a valid ID or a video | Applying for monetization, clickable description links, chapters, pinned comments |

YouTube says active creators with enough channel history will likely qualify automatically, and anyone can get advanced features right away by verifying with an ID or video. To keep them, you have to follow the Community Guidelines and keep a positive channel history.

### How to check your status

YouTube Studio: Settings › Channel › Feature eligibility

*Features you can already use show Enabled.*

## How do I apply for the YouTube Partner Program?

1. **Open YouTube Studio**: Sign in to YouTube, click your profile picture, then select YouTube Studio.
2. **Go to Earn**: Select Earn in the left menu, then Apply Now.
3. **Accept the Base terms**: Click Start to review the Base terms, then accept them.
4. **Set up AdSense for YouTube**: Click Start to create an AdSense for YouTube account, or link an active one you already have.
5. **Wait for review**: Once the terms are accepted and AdSense is linked, the Get Reviewed step shows In Progress and your channel joins the review queue.

### Setting up AdSense for YouTube

YouTube's [AdSense setup page](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/9914702) says to create the account from YouTube Studio's Earn tab, not from the AdSense website. If you already use AdSense for a website, sign in with that account's Google Account and link it instead of making a second one: you can only have one AdSense or AdSense for YouTube account under the same payee name, and duplicates are disapproved. Approval can take several days, and you'll get an email when it's done. Once linked, you can change the linked account only once every 32 days.

### If you're not eligible yet

The Earn area has a Get notified option, and YouTube will email you when you reach a threshold. That's more reliable than checking your numbers by hand, since both windows roll forward every day.

## What does YouTube look at when it reviews my channel?

Reviewers check the channel against YouTube's [channel monetization policies](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/1311392), not just the numbers. They can't watch every video, so they may focus on the channel's main theme, the most-viewed videos, the newest videos, the videos with the biggest share of watch time, and metadata such as titles, thumbnails, descriptions and the About section. They can check anything else on the channel too.

### Reused content

This is the policy that catches channels built on other people's material. It covers channels that repurpose content already on YouTube or elsewhere without adding much. Critical reviews, reaction videos with real commentary, and reused footage with new narration or a new storyline are fine. Minimal-change reposts, compilations of clips from other platforms and mostly non-verbal reactions aren't. The policy applies even if the original creator gave you permission, and if some videos break it, monetization can be removed from the whole channel. If you cut clips from your own long videos instead, [how to clip a YouTube video](/blog/how-to-clip-a-youtube-video) covers the tools for that.

### Inauthentic content

Since July 15, 2025, YouTube calls its repetitious content policy the inauthentic content policy. It covers mass-produced or template-like videos that feel interchangeable after watching a few in a row: slideshows or scrolling text with little narrative, the same situation with the same outcome over and over, or AI-generated videos from generic templates with no original perspective. Recurring intros and series with distinct episodes are fine. YouTube says using AI or templates is acceptable when the result shows creative vision.

### Before you apply

Look at your channel the way a reviewer would. Make sure your most-viewed and newest videos represent what the channel is really about, and that titles, thumbnails and descriptions describe the videos accurately. The [YouTube title generator](/tools/youtube-title-generator) and [description generator](/tools/youtube-description-generator) can help you rewrite vague metadata.

## How long does the YouTube Partner Program review take?

YouTube says a decision typically takes about a month after you accept the terms and link AdSense. It can take longer when there's a high volume of applications, when systems have issues, or when your channel needs more than one review.

### If you're rejected

After a first rejection, you can appeal within 21 days, or keep uploading original content and re-apply after 30 days. After a later rejection, or if you've already re-applied, the wait is 90 days. YouTube suggests a rejection usually means reviewers found a significant part of the channel didn't follow its policies, so review your content before trying again.

### How to appeal a rejection

YouTube's [appeal page](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/9564590) says you may be able to appeal with a video or through Creator Support, depending on your channel. Teams respond within 14 days, and if the appeal succeeds, the channel is approved within 30 days. If it fails, you can re-apply 90 days after the rejection. Don't delete videos before you appeal: YouTube reviews the channel as it is when you submit.

1. Record an appeal video under 5 minutes
2. Say your channel URL in the first 30 seconds
3. Explain how the channel follows the policies, with examples
4. Upload it to the same channel as unlisted
5. In Earn, start the appeal and submit the video URL

*Requirements from YouTube Help's appeal page.*

The video should focus on the channel as a whole, show how you make your content, and keep all appeal details in the video rather than the description. It needs to be narrated in a supported language, such as English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese or Japanese, or have English subtitles that aren't auto-generated. The appeal deadline appears next to the Start Appeal button in the Earn area. If you'd rather use Creator Support, look for Appeal if you think we made a mistake in the same area.

## When does YouTube pay you each month?

Once you're earning, YouTube's [AdSense for YouTube payment process](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/14728151) runs on the same dates every month:

- Revenue takes 2 days to show in YouTube Analytics, and the estimate is adjusted about a week later and again in the middle of the next month.
- Between the 7th and 12th, last month's earnings are finalized and added to your AdSense for YouTube balance. June's earnings, for example, appear between July 7 and 12.
- On the 20th, your balance is checked against the payment threshold. If it's short, it rolls over to the next month. Changes such as removing a payment hold must be done by the 20th, or they wait a month.
- Between the 21st and 26th, the payment is issued. If the 21st falls on a weekend or holiday, it may go out the next business day.

YouTube says it can't issue payments outside this schedule for any reason. How quickly the money then reaches you depends on the payment method:

| Payment method | Time after the payment is issued |
| --- | --- |
| EFT (bank transfer) | Up to 7 business days |
| Check | 2 to 4 weeks by mail |
| Hyperwallet | 1 to 2 days |
| Wire transfer | Up to 15 business days |

### A worked example of a first payment

Say a US channel is approved in mid-March and earns $45 in the rest of March and $70 in April. These amounts are made up to show how the rules interact:

- April 7 to 12: March's $45 is finalized; the balance passes $10, so a PIN is mailed
- April 20: $45 is under $100, so it rolls over
- Early to mid May: The PIN arrives after 3 to 4 weeks and is entered
- May 7 to 12: April's $70 is finalized; the balance is now $115
- May 20: Balance is over $100 and nothing is on hold
- May 21 to 26: First payment of $115 is issued

*A hypothetical channel. If the PIN arrived after May 20, payment would slip to June.*

In this example the first payment lands about two months after approval. A channel that earns $100 in its first month could be paid a month sooner, as long as the PIN arrives and is entered before the 20th. A channel earning $20 a month would wait about five months for its balance to reach $100.

### If your channel is part of a multi-channel network

YouTube's earnings overview says that for channels affiliated with a multi-channel network (MCN), YouTube pays the MCN, and the MCN pays its affiliates on the same timeline. The AdSense setup page adds that affiliate channels still have to link their own AdSense for YouTube account. For the 2027 terms, affiliate channels must accept the updated terms themselves by January 31, 2027, while channels the MCN owns and operates depend on the MCN accepting them. Check your MCN agreement for when it pays you, since that sits outside YouTube's schedule.

## What is the YouTube payment threshold?

YouTube's [revenue thresholds page](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/14727140) lists five thresholds. Each one asks you to do something:

| Threshold | US amount | What you need to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Tax info | $0 | Submit US tax info, wherever you live |
| Verification | $10 | Verify your identity and your address |
| Payment method selection | $10 | Choose how you'll be paid |
| Payment | $100 | Nothing, if there are no holds; you're paid in the next cycle |
| Cancelation | $10 | If you close the account above this, you get a final payment within about 90 days |

### Thresholds in other currencies

| Currency | Payment method selection | Payment |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Canadian dollar | C$10 | C$100 |
| Australian dollar | A$15 | A$100 |
| Euro | €10 | €70 |
| British pound | £10 | £60 |
| Japanese yen | ¥1,000 | ¥8,000 |

If you have a separate AdSense account for a website, it and your YouTube payments account each have to reach the threshold on their own. You only verify your identity once.

### Verifying your address with a PIN

YouTube's [PIN verification page](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/14727844) says the 6-digit PIN goes out by standard mail once you reach the verification threshold, and only after any identity check is done. It usually takes 3 to 4 weeks to arrive and can't be tracked, so your payments address has to accept standard mail. You have 4 months from when the PIN is generated to enter it. Missing the deadline demonetizes the channel, and so does entering the PIN wrong 3 times. If it hasn't arrived after 3 weeks, you can request a replacement.

AdSense for YouTube: Payments › Verification check › Enter PIN › Submit

*Enter the PIN exactly as it's printed on the letter.*

### Tax info

YouTube's [US tax requirements page](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/10391362) says every monetizing creator must provide US tax info, wherever they live. If an individual doesn't, Google may withhold up to 24% of total worldwide earnings. With valid tax info, creators outside the US may have 0% to 30% withheld from the part of their earnings that comes from US viewers, depending on tax treaties. The deadline to submit or update tax info for the year is December 10. To submit it, sign in to AdSense for YouTube, go to Payments, then Payments info, select Manage settings, and edit United States tax info. Forms expire after the third full calendar year following the year you signed, so you'll need to resubmit every few years.

## Why haven't I been paid by YouTube yet?

If the 26th has passed and nothing arrived, work through this list. YouTube's [earnings overview](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/72902) says you're paid only when your earnings reach the threshold, there are no holds, your tax info is in, monetization isn't paused, and you follow the monetization policies.

**Before you can be paid**
- [ ] Channel accepted into the Partner Program and the modules accepted
- [ ] AdSense for YouTube account approved and linked
- [ ] Address verified with the mailed PIN
- [ ] US tax info submitted and approved
- [ ] Payment method chosen
- [ ] Balance at or above the threshold by the 20th
- [ ] No payment holds on the account

*Every item has to be true by the 20th for that month's payment.*

### Payment holds and how to clear them

YouTube's [payment holds page](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/14727845) lists these. Check the Payments page in AdSense for YouTube for an alert telling you which one applies.

| Hold | Why it happens | How to clear it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Tax | Tax info is missing or needs rechecking | Submit tax info and confirm the form shows as approved |
| Identity | Your identity or payment address isn't verified | Submit the requested documents, or enter the mailed PIN |
| No payment method | You reached $10 but haven't picked a method | Add a form of payment |
| Self-hold | You paused your own payments | Remove the self-hold |
| Compliance | Your account is being reviewed against AdSense policies | Usually nothing; reply within 5 business days if Google emails you |
| Protection | Google is reviewing the account; payouts are held up to 35 days | Usually nothing; funds are released 5 to 7 days after it clears |
| Bank verification | A bank in the chain needs to confirm your details | Reply to Google's email within 5 business days |

> YouTube says Google will never ask for your bank account details by email, and that messages from addresses such as gmail.com aren't from Google. If an email about a hold asks for passwords, codes or bank logins, it's a scam.

### Finalized earnings live in AdSense, not Studio

YouTube Studio shows estimates. Finalized earnings are only visible in AdSense for YouTube, under Payments, and they can differ from the estimates because of invalid traffic, copyright claims and some ad campaign types. If you have a single channel, you can also see payments in the YouTube Studio mobile app.

## How long does it take to earn from memberships, Super Chat or Shopping?

The same review applies, but you can start at 500 subscribers in eligible countries. Memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers and Super Thanks pay 70% of net revenue under the Commerce Product Module and go into the same AdSense for YouTube balance as ad revenue, so they follow the same monthly cycle. Shopping is different: YouTube's earnings overview says merch sales are paid directly by your retailer or platform. Each feature also has its own conditions. YouTube's [channel memberships page](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/7636690), for example, says your channel can't be set as made for kids or have a significant number of made-for-kids videos, some music channels aren't eligible, and you have to live in an available location. Refunds to members come out of your share.

## Can YouTube stop paying you after you're in?

Yes, and knowing how keeps the payments coming. Under the channel monetization policies, YouTube can withhold, adjust or offset earnings for policy violations, delay payments by up to 90 days, limit ads on individual videos, or suspend monetization on the channel. Creating new channels to get around a restriction can lead to all of them being terminated.

### Inactivity

YouTube's overview says it may turn off monetization on channels that haven't uploaded a video or posted to the Posts tab for 6 months or more. From February 1, 2027, the new activity rules apply on top of that.

### If YouTube schedules a suspension

If you get a notice that monetization will be suspended, the appeal page says to appeal within 7 days before the scheduled date, which pauses the suspension while it's reviewed. If the suspension has already happened, you have 21 days. A successful appeal re-admits you within 30 days. If it's rejected, you can re-apply 90 days after the suspension.

### If you lose access to the channel

A hacked or locked channel can't be paid until you're back in control. [How to recover a YouTube account](/blog/how-to-recover-a-youtube-account) covers the steps, and 2-Step Verification, which the Partner Program already requires, is the best protection.

## What should I do while I wait to get paid?

- Turn on Get notified in the Earn tab if you're not eligible yet, so you can apply the day you qualify.
- Verify your phone number now so you have intermediate features, including custom thumbnails. [YouTube thumbnail size](/blog/youtube-thumbnail-size) covers the dimensions, and [YouTube banner size](/blog/youtube-banner-size) covers channel art.
- Make sure your payments address can receive standard mail before the PIN is sent.
- Submit tax info as soon as you're accepted, and before December 10 each year.
- Keep uploading on a steady schedule. From February 1, 2027, the activity rules count uploads every 90 days.
- Work out what your views could earn with the [YouTube money calculator](/tools/youtube-money-calculator), and read [how much YouTube pays for 1 million views](/blog/how-much-does-youtube-pay-for-1-million-views) and [how much YouTube pays per 1,000 views](/blog/how-much-does-youtube-pay-per-1000-views) for the RPM math.
- Use relevant tags and clear descriptions. The [YouTube tag generator](/tools/youtube-tag-generator) suggests tags from a topic.

If keeping a steady schedule is the hard part, [PostMesh can schedule YouTube uploads](/platform/youtube) up to 30 days ahead through the YouTube API. The video uploads as private and YouTube makes it public at the time you pick. The [YouTube scheduling guide](/blog/how-to-schedule-youtube-videos) covers how that works in YouTube Studio too, and [best time to post on YouTube](/blog/best-time-to-post-on-youtube) covers when to publish.

## Questions

### How long does it take to get monetized on YouTube?

Reaching the thresholds depends on your channel. Once you apply, YouTube says the review typically takes about a month, though it can take longer.

### Does YouTube pay you every month?

Yes, if your balance has reached the payment threshold by the 20th. Payments go out between the 21st and 26th; if you're under the threshold, the balance rolls over.

### How much do you need to earn before YouTube pays you?

$100 in the US. Other currencies have their own amounts, such as £60 or €70.

### Can I get paid by YouTube without AdSense?

Not for Partner Program earnings. YouTube requires one active AdSense for YouTube account linked to the channel, and finalized earnings are paid through it.

### Do I lose monetization when the 2027 thresholds start?

No, if you're already in the program. YouTube says existing partners aren't affected, but you need to accept the updated terms in YouTube Studio by January 31, 2027.

### What happens if my PIN never arrives?

You can request a replacement PIN if it hasn't arrived after 3 weeks. You have 4 months from when the first PIN was generated before the channel is demonetized.

### Can I reapply if YouTube rejects my channel?

Yes. After a first rejection you can appeal within 21 days or reapply after 30 days. Later rejections mean a 90-day wait.

### Do views from before I joined the Partner Program get paid?

No. They count toward the thresholds, but revenue sharing only starts once your channel is accepted and you've accepted the monetization modules.

### Can I ask YouTube to pay me early?

No. YouTube says it can't issue payments outside the standard monthly timeline for any reason.

### Do Shorts count toward the 4,000 watch hours?

No. Watch hours from Shorts in the Shorts Feed don't count. Shorts-focused channels qualify with 10 million Shorts views in 90 days instead.
