# Why is my TikTok not getting views? What TikTok says, and what to check

By PostMesh team. Published 2026-10-31; updated 2026-10-31.

Most TikToks with few views are either limited by a privacy setting, made ineligible for the For You feed under TikTok's Community Guidelines, or simply not being picked by the recommendation system yet. Check the post's privacy setting, then TikTok's analytics and Account check, which show whether a post or your account was restricted.

Low views are frustrating partly because TikTok doesn't send a message saying why. But TikTok does publish a fair amount about how its recommendations work, what it keeps out of the For You feed, and where to check whether something on your account is restricted. This guide pulls that together into a set of checks you can run in a few minutes, in the order most likely to find the problem.

## The short answer

Start with the cheap checks. A wrong privacy setting takes ten seconds to spot. An ineligible video or a restricted account shows up in TikTok's own tools. Only once those are clear is it worth looking at the content itself.

| What you see | Most likely cause | Where to check |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 0 views on a new post | The post is set to Only you, or it's still being reviewed | The post's privacy setting, then wait |
| Views only from people you know | Private account, or the post is set to Friends or Followers | Account privacy and post privacy |
| One video stuck far below your usual | The video was made ineligible for the For You feed | TikTok analytics for that post |
| Every video suddenly low | Your account was made ineligible for recommendation, or restricted | Account check, inbox and profile notices |
| Steady but low views on everything | The recommendation system isn't picking your videos often | Analytics: watch time, traffic, audience |

**Who can see your video right now?**
- Only you → Nobody else can watch it. Change the post's privacy to Everyone.
- Friends or Followers only → It can't reach new people. Switch to Everyone if you want strangers to see it.
- Everyone, but my account is private → Only approved followers can watch. Make the account public to reach For You.
- Everyone, on a public account → Settings aren't the problem. Check analytics and Account check next.

*Settings first. They're the quickest thing to rule out.*

## How does TikTok decide who sees your video?

TikTok's Help Center page on [how TikTok recommends content](https://support.tiktok.com/en/using-tiktok/exploring-videos/how-tiktok-recommends-content) says each feed picks from a large collection of eligible content and ranks it by how likely each person is to be interested. It names three main kinds of signals for the For You feed:

| Signal | Examples TikTok gives for For You |
| --- | --- |
| User interactions | Content people like, share, comment on, and watch in full or skip, plus accounts they follow back |
| Content information | Sounds, hashtags, number of views, and the country the content was published in |
| User information | Device settings, language, location, time zone and day, and device type |

TikTok says that for most users, interactions such as time spent watching a video are generally weighted more heavily than the other signals. Some recommendations also lean on people with similar tastes. TikTok's example: if one person likes videos 1, 2 and 3, and another likes videos 1 through 5, the system may predict the first person will also like videos 4 and 5.

### What new viewers see first

TikTok's Help Center says that when someone signs up, TikTok may ask them to pick categories of interest, like pets or travel. If they don't, TikTok starts them on a feed of recent posts that are popular with others, choosing content that's appropriate for a broad audience and shaped by their location and language settings. That's one more reason broad-audience content has an advantage: it's eligible for the widest set of viewers, including brand-new ones.

### Language and location

Among the signals TikTok lists are the country a video was published in, and each viewer's language, location and time zone. TikTok says these device and account settings get lower weight than interactions, but they still shape who sees what. A video in one language, posted from one country, is easiest to match with viewers who share those settings.

### Do followers matter for views?

Less than most people think. In its 2020 newsroom post [How TikTok recommends videos #ForYou](https://newsroom.tiktok.com/how-tiktok-recommends-videos-for-you?lang=en), TikTok said that a video is likely to get more views from an account with more followers, simply because of the larger follower base, but that neither follower count nor whether an account has had high-performing videos before are direct factors in the recommendation system. The same post says a strong signal, such as someone finishing a longer video, counts for more than a weak one, such as the viewer and creator being in the same country.

### Why TikTok spreads views around

TikTok also deliberately mixes things up. Its Help Center says it typically doesn't recommend content someone has already seen, and tries to show new and diverse creators. The 2020 post adds that the For You feed generally won't show two videos in a row with the same sound or from the same creator, and doesn't recommend duplicated content or spam. So even a viewer who loves your videos won't see all of them back to back.

## Is my TikTok shadowbanned?

"Shadowban" isn't a word TikTok uses on any of the pages we read for this guide. What TikTok describes instead is specific and checkable: content or accounts can be made ineligible for the For You feed, and accounts can be restricted from things like posting or commenting. In both cases TikTok says it tells you, through analytics, notices or Account check.

TikTok's [Community Guidelines](https://www.tiktok.com/community-guidelines/en/fyf-standards) also make a point worth holding on to: if a video isn't getting many views, it doesn't necessarily mean it broke a rule. A video can be fully eligible and still not be picked often by the recommendation system.

If you're checking reach on X as well, our [X shadowban test guide](/blog/x-shadowban-test) covers what X says about its own visibility limits.

## How do I check if my TikTok account is restricted?

TikTok has a tool for exactly this called Account check. Its [account status page](https://support.tiktok.com/en/safety-hc/account-and-user-safety/account-status) says it helps with questions about your account standing or how your posts are performing, and covers restrictions on logging in, posting, commenting, editing your profile and sending direct messages. There are two ways in.

### From TikTok Studio

TikTok: Profile › Menu ☰ › TikTok Studio › More tools › Account check

*Account check sits under More tools in TikTok Studio.*

### From the Safety Center

TikTok: Profile › Menu ☰ › Settings and privacy › Support › Safety Center › Account check

*The same Account check, reached through Settings and privacy.*

TikTok says you'll see a checkmark next to a feature or post if there's no issue, and a warning sign if there is one. If everything shows a checkmark, your account isn't restricted, and the reason for low views lies elsewhere.

## How do I know if a video is ineligible for the For You feed?

Check that video's analytics. TikTok's Community Guidelines say creators can use TikTok's analytics to see how their videos are performing, including whether any were made ineligible for recommendation, and that if content is made ineligible for the For You feed or otherwise restricted, the information appears in the analytics tool.

TikTok's Help Center page for when [posts aren't getting views](https://support.tiktok.com/en/using-tiktok/growing-your-audience/my-videos-arent-getting-views) points to the same place: if views fluctuate, use the analytics dashboard to understand performance, including total views and engagement. TikTok's account types page notes you need at least one public post to access analytics.

Being ineligible for For You doesn't make a video invisible. TikTok's Community Guidelines say people may still find it through search or by going to your profile. TikTok's [For You help page](https://support.tiktok.com/en/getting-started/for-you) adds that content not suitable for a broad audience may be made ineligible for For You and harder to find in search.

### When the whole account is ineligible

TikTok's Help Center page on [why an account isn't being recommended](https://support.tiktok.com/en/safety-hc/account-and-user-safety/why-is-my-account-not-being-recommended) says that if you repeatedly post content that's unsuitable for the For You feed, your account and posts won't appear in For You and will be harder to find in search. TikTok's Community Guidelines say this can happen even when an account doesn't break the rules, if it posts a lot of content that's ineligible for For You.

The same Help Center page says TikTok notifies you in your inbox and on your profile, so you can see which content was flagged and why. It also says TikTok may restore an account to good standing automatically, depending on how much of its content isn't suitable for For You.

## What makes a TikTok ineligible for the For You feed?

TikTok's Community Guidelines say the For You feed is meant for a broad audience, from teenagers to great-grandparents, so some content that's allowed on TikTok is kept out of it. Each section of the guidelines has an "FYF Ineligible" list. These are the parts creators run into most:

| Area | Examples TikTok lists as ineligible for For You |
| --- | --- |
| Unoriginal content | Reused or unoriginal content without creative edits, such as clips with someone else's watermark or logo; low-quality or minimally edited content, such as short clips made only from GIFs |
| Fake engagement | Tricking people into engaging, such as like-for-like promises, false incentives for gifts or follows, or misleading claims to boost views |
| Regulated goods | Showing or promoting gambling, cannabis, adult tobacco or vaping, or firearms; in some regions, adults drinking alcohol |
| Risky activity | Dangerous activity with visible or imminent moderate physical harm |
| Body and sexual content | Significant adult body exposure, intimate kissing, sexually suggestive acts or sexualized framing |
| Graphic or shocking content | Significant bleeding, fights that may cause injury, the build-up to a serious accident, and audio or visual effects meant to shock, such as jump scares |
| Misinformation | Unverified claims about a crisis or civic event, conspiracy theories blaming powerful groups, moderate-harm health misinformation, and out-of-context media |
| Health and body image | Diets or products with exaggerated claims, extended intermittent fasting, and invasive cosmetic surgery content |
| Elections and AI | Unverified election claims, suspected paid political ads, and realistic content not yet confirmed as AI-generated that could mislead on public matters |

Two more rules catch creators out. Commercial content has to be disclosed with TikTok's content disclosure setting, and the guidelines say undisclosed commercial content may be removed from For You. Content allowed under a public interest exception, such as documentary or educational material, may still be made ineligible for For You.

> TikTok's guidelines also say its systems try not to repeatedly recommend some kinds of content that could lead to a negative experience, naming extreme fitness or dieting, sexual suggestiveness, sadness and overgeneralized mental health advice. If you post a lot in those areas, expect fewer repeat recommendations to the same viewers.

## Why do reposts and edited clips get so few views?

Because TikTok treats unoriginal content as ineligible for For You. Reposting a clip from another app with its watermark, or stitching together other people's videos with no edits of your own, is exactly what the guidelines describe. The 2020 newsroom post also says TikTok doesn't recommend duplicated content.

**Likely to stay eligible**
- Filmed and edited by you
- Your own commentary, reaction or lesson on a topic
- Clear disclosure on paid or gifted content
- Engagement earned by the video itself

**Ineligible for For You**
- Clips with another app's watermark or logo
- Minimal edits, such as GIF-only clips
- Like-for-like or follow-for-follow promises
- Undisclosed sponsored content

*The right column comes from TikTok's Community Guidelines.*

If you post the same video on several networks, upload your original file to each one rather than downloading it from one app and reposting it with a watermark. Our guide on [whether cross-posting hurts engagement](/blog/does-cross-posting-hurt-engagement) covers this in more detail, and [how to cross-post to multiple platforms](/blog/how-to-cross-post-to-multiple-platforms) shows how to send the same original file everywhere at once.

## Could my settings be hiding my TikToks?

Yes, and it's more common than it sounds. TikTok has settings at two levels, and either can keep a video from reaching new people.

### Private account

TikTok's page on [public and private accounts](https://support.tiktok.com/en/account-and-privacy/account-privacy-settings/making-your-account-public-or-private) says that with a private account, only people you approve can follow you and watch your videos. To change it: Profile, the Menu button, Settings and privacy, Privacy, then turn Private account off.

### Each post's privacy setting

TikTok's [post visibility page](https://support.tiktok.com/en/account-and-privacy/account-privacy-settings/video-visibility) says every post has its own setting. On a public account you can choose Everyone (people on or off TikTok), Friends (followers you follow back) or Only you. On a private account the choices are Followers, Friends or Only you. To change an existing post, open it from your profile, tap the More options button, then Privacy settings.

Two details from that page matter for views. First, depending on your age and location, posts may be set to Only you by default, and you may not be able to change it until you reach a certain age. Second, changing the setting doesn't reset the view count, so a post that sat on Only you for a day keeps its count when you open it up.

### Audience controls

The same page says content you tag as audience-controlled is inaccessible to people under 18. That's the right choice for mature themes, but it also means a smaller possible audience.

### Business accounts and music

TikTok's account types page says Business Accounts can't use the general music library, only the Commercial Music Library of tracks cleared for commercial use. If you switched to a Business Account and your favorite sounds disappeared, this is why. It doesn't block views by itself, but it changes which sounds you can build videos around.

## Why is my new TikTok stuck at 0 views?

If a video shows 0 views for a while right after posting, check three things in order:

1. Its privacy setting. A post set to Only you will stay at 0 for everyone else.
2. Your account status. If Account check shows a posting restriction, that explains it.
3. Time. TikTok's 2020 newsroom post says videos that have just been uploaded or are under review may not be eligible for recommendation yet.

- Right after upload: Automated review. New or under-review videos may not be recommended yet.
- If flagged: Removed automatically, or sent to moderators for a closer look
- As views grow: More review if the video gets popular or is reported
- If made ineligible: The reason shows in analytics, and you can appeal

*Based on the detection and appeals sections of TikTok's Community Guidelines and its 2020 recommendations post.*

TikTok's Community Guidelines explain the review steps: content first goes through automated review, flagged content is removed automatically or sent to moderators, and more review happens if content gets popular or is reported. TikTok's Help Center adds that its safety team takes extra care with content as it rises in popularity.

## Why did my TikTok views suddenly drop?

A sudden drop across every video points to something at the account level. A drop on one video points to that video. Work through these:

- Check your inbox and profile for an "ineligible for recommendation" notice. TikTok's Help Center says that's where it tells you if your account was made ineligible.
- Run Account check for restrictions on posting or other features.
- Open analytics for your recent posts to see whether any were marked ineligible.
- Look at what changed. A switch to reposted clips, sponsored posts without disclosure, or a lot of content in an FYF-ineligible area can all affect reach under the guidelines.
- Remember the normal swings. TikTok's own Help Center talks about views fluctuating, and its recommendations deliberately mix in different creators and topics.

Account-level problems can also come from enforcement. TikTok's Community Guidelines say breaking the rules can lead to a warning, a temporary feature or account restriction, or a ban, and that in some cases users can complete optional policy training to restore full access.

## How do I appeal if my video was made ineligible?

TikTok's Community Guidelines say that if your content was removed, made ineligible for the For You feed or otherwise restricted, and you believe it was a mistake, you can appeal. You can then follow the appeal's status in the in-app Safety Center.

For an account that's been made ineligible for recommendation, TikTok's Help Center describes two ways to appeal:

1. **From your inbox**: Tap Inbox, tap the notification that your account is ineligible for recommendation, then View more. Review the ineligible videos and tap Appeal at the top.
2. **From your profile**: Tap Profile, tap the Ineligible for recommendation notice below your username, review the videos and tap Appeal at the top.

1. Open the ineligible notice in Inbox or on your profile
2. Review which videos were flagged and why
3. Tap Appeal
4. Follow the status in the Safety Center

*Only appeal videos you think were flagged by mistake. Fix or remove the rest.*

Be honest with yourself before appealing. If a flagged video really is a watermarked repost or an undisclosed ad, an appeal is unlikely to help. TikTok says it may restore an account automatically depending on how much of its content isn't suitable for For You, so fixing or removing the flagged videos and posting eligible ones is the practical way back.

## Does buying views or follow-for-follow help?

No, and it can make things worse. TikTok's Community Guidelines don't allow accounts that try to manipulate the platform, or the trade of services that artificially boost engagement or trick the recommendation system. Tricking people into engaging, such as like-for-like promises or false incentives for following, is listed as ineligible for For You.

If you hope to earn from your views, fake activity is also grounds for removal from TikTok's Creator Rewards Program. Our guide to [how much TikTok pays for 1 million views](/blog/how-much-does-tiktok-pay-for-1-million-views) covers the program's rules.

TikTok's own paid option is Promote, which its account types page describes as an advertising tool to help more people discover your content. Promoted views are ads, not organic reach, and they don't count as qualified views for Creator Rewards.

## How can I get more views on TikTok?

Once you've ruled out settings and eligibility, the rest is about making videos the recommendation system has reasons to show. TikTok's Help Center page on [growing your audience](https://support.tiktok.com/en/using-tiktok/growing-your-audience/how-to-grow-your-audience) gives these tips:

- Engage with viewers through comments, LIVE and other ways.
- Review your analytics to learn which posts trend and how your audience engages.
- Upload high-quality content regularly.
- Create content longer than one minute.
- Use TikTok Studio to edit, upload and manage your content.
- Collaborate with similar creators, including through Duet, Stitch and LIVE.

### Give the system clear signals

Since TikTok lists sounds and hashtags among the content information it uses, a caption and hashtags that describe what's actually in the video help it reach people interested in that topic. The free [TikTok caption generator](/tools/tiktok-caption-generator) and [TikTok hashtag generator](/tools/tiktok-hashtag-generator) give you a first draft, and the [TikTok caption counter](/tools/tiktok-caption-character-counter) checks the length.

Watch time is the signal TikTok says usually counts most. The 2020 post gives finishing a longer video as an example of a strong signal. In practice that means getting to the point quickly and giving people a reason to stay to the end.

### Read your analytics, not just your view count

TikTok's Help Center says TikTok Studio's Analytics section shows an overview of your account, metrics for all your posts, your viewers' key metrics, demographics and activity times, and insights on your followers. Activity times tell you when your audience is on TikTok, which is a better guide to posting times than any general study. Our guide to the [best time to post on TikTok](/blog/best-time-to-post-on-tiktok) covers how to combine the two. To compare posts fairly, the [engagement rate calculator](/tools/engagement-rate-calculator) turns a post's likes, comments, shares and saves into an engagement rate by views, reach or followers.

### Use Why this post as a viewer

TikTok shows viewers why a video landed in their For You feed. Its For You help page says you tap the Share button on a post, then Why this post. The reasons it lists include that you interacted with similar posts, that the post is popular in your country, that it was created recently, that it's a longer video and you seem to enjoy longer videos, and that you follow the creator. Checking this on videos in your niche that do well is a quick way to see which of those signals they're riding.

### Post consistently

Regular posting is one of TikTok's own tips, and the hardest to keep up. PostMesh can schedule TikTok videos up to 30 days ahead and posts them through TikTok's official Content Posting API, with the privacy setting, comments, Duet and Stitch options and disclosure settings TikTok requires on each post. See [how to schedule TikTok videos](/blog/how-to-schedule-tiktok-videos) or [what PostMesh supports on TikTok](/platform/tiktok).

## How do I keep my TikToks eligible for For You?

Most reach problems are easier to prevent than to fix. Run through this before you post:

**Before you post a TikTok**
- [ ] Post privacy is set to Everyone, on a public account
- [ ] The video is yours, with no other app's watermark
- [ ] It has real edits, not just a reused clip or GIF
- [ ] Paid or gifted content uses the disclosure setting
- [ ] No like-for-like or follow-for-follow promises
- [ ] Mature themes are tagged with audience controls
- [ ] Caption and hashtags describe what's in the video
- [ ] Account check shows no restrictions

*Each item comes from TikTok's Help Center or Community Guidelines.*

Your profile matters too. A clear bio helps people who find one video decide to follow, which grows the audience that sees your next one. The [TikTok bio generator](/tools/tiktok-bio-generator) can draft one, and our [social media character limits guide](/blog/social-media-character-limits) lists how much room TikTok gives you. If you check your own videos from a computer, our guide to [watching TikTok without the app](/blog/how-to-watch-tiktok-without-the-app) explains what the website shows.

## Questions

### Why does my TikTok have 0 views?

Check that the post isn't set to Only you and that Account check shows no posting restriction. TikTok also says newly uploaded videos or videos under review may not be recommended yet.

### Does TikTok shadowban accounts?

TikTok's pages don't use that word. They describe making content or accounts ineligible for the For You feed, and they say you'll see this in analytics or in notices on your inbox and profile.

### How long does it take for a TikTok to get views?

TikTok doesn't give a time. It says new videos go through automated review first, and videos still under review may not be recommended until it's done.

### Does deleting and reposting a TikTok help?

TikTok doesn't recommend duplicated content, according to its 2020 post on For You. If a video was made ineligible, fixing the reason matters more than reposting it.

### Do hashtags help TikTok views?

TikTok lists hashtags as one of the content signals its recommendations use, along with sounds. Use ones that describe the video, since watch time and other interactions usually count for more.

### Does follower count affect TikTok views?

Not directly. TikTok says more followers usually means more views from that follower base, but follower count isn't a direct factor in For You recommendations.

### Why do my TikToks only get views from friends?

Your account may be private, or the post set to Friends or Followers. Set the post to Everyone on a public account so it can reach people who don't follow you.

### Can I appeal if my video is ineligible for For You?

Yes. TikTok says you can appeal content made ineligible for the For You feed if you think it's a mistake, and follow the appeal in the Safety Center.

### Will my account recover from being ineligible for recommendation?

TikTok says it may restore an account to good standing automatically, depending on how much of its content isn't suitable for For You. You can also appeal.

### Do longer TikTok videos get more views?

TikTok's growth tips recommend content longer than one minute, and its 2020 post names finishing a longer video as a strong signal. Length only helps if people keep watching.
