In slang, aura means the cool, confident presence someone gives off without trying. People joke about gaining or losing "aura points" for impressive or embarrassing moments. In ordinary English, an aura is the distinctive feeling or atmosphere that surrounds a person or place.

## What aura means

In everyday English, an aura is the feeling or atmosphere that seems to surround a person, place or thing, as in "the old house had an aura of mystery." Slang keeps that idea and narrows it: aura is the effortless cool that makes someone seem impressive just by being there. A goalkeeper who stays calm in a penalty shootout has aura. So does the friend who walks into a party and instantly seems to belong.

The key word is effortless. Aura is about composure and presence, not about trying hard. The moment you're seen working for it, you lose it, which is why so many aura jokes are about losing it. Know Your Meme describes the slang as often used to compliment men for charisma or presence, but in practice people now say anyone has aura, and things too: a song, a car, an outfit.

Aura also works as a score. Since 2024, people have joked about earning and losing "aura points" as if life were a video game, with a precise number for every win or humiliation. Tripping on stairs in front of your crush might cost you 1,000 aura. Catching your phone mid-fall without looking might earn you 500.

**Gains aura**
- Staying calm under pressure
- Pulling off something without trying
- Walking away from drama
- A perfect comeback

**Loses aura**
- Tripping in public
- Your voice cracking mid-sentence
- Waving back at someone who wasn't waving at you
- Trying too hard to look cool

## Where aura slang comes from

The slang sense grew up in sports commentary and fan accounts. The earliest example Know Your Meme cites is an October 2020 New York Times article about Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, which argued that his rare mistakes could be forgiven because he simply had an aura. Soccer fans on X ran with it: Know Your Meme's earliest X meme, from March 8, 2022, joked that van Dijk used his aura to block a shot, and TikTok edits of him defending with nothing but aura followed.

Through 2023, basketball and wrestling fans picked it up, and by late 2023 it had spread beyond sports. Early 2024 brought a TikTok trend about "the most amount of aura I've used on a level 1," treating aura like a power in a video game, and that framing set up the next step.

### Aura points

Know Your Meme traces the first aura points meme to a TikTok posted on May 1, 2024, in which the creator assigned point values to how much aura he lost in different situations. Within two weeks the format was everywhere: an Instagram meme on May 13, 2024 ended with "(-1000 aura points)," and school-themed TikToks about the worst ways to lose aura collected millions of plays by mid-May. The standard template, "how many aura points did I lose when…," is still the most common way the joke appears.

### Aura farming

Aura farming is the next layer: deliberately doing things to look cool and rack up aura, like a gamer grinding for points. Know Your Meme finds the phrase in a TikTok caption as early as January 28, 2024 and dates its viral spread to mid-September 2024. It exploded again in June 2025 thanks to a clip of a boy in all black dancing coolly on the bow of a racing boat at Pacu Jalur, a traditional boat race in Indonesia. Edits set to "Young Black & Rich" by Melly Mike spread across Instagram and TikTok in late June 2025, and the kid became the face of aura farming. Dictionary.com put aura farming on its shortlist for 2025 Word of the Year, according to ABC's report on the announcement.

## How people use aura on social media

On TikTok, aura is a scoring system. Creators post skits of everyday humiliations with a number on screen, and commenters keep the tally: "-2000 aura for that one." Sports clips of athletes celebrating calmly or staring down an opponent fill up with "aura" comments. On Instagram Reels, the same edits travel with slow-motion footage and a hard-hitting song. On X, fans debate which athlete or anime character has the most aura. In group chats, it's quick commentary on a friend's latest win or fail. On LinkedIn it's rare, though you'll see the occasional joke about a CEO's aura in a keynote.

Some made-up examples:

- A comment under a clip of a goalkeeper saving a penalty without moving: "pure aura"
- A caption on a fail video: "called my teacher mom in front of everyone (-5000 aura)"
- A friend in a group chat: "he paid for everyone's food and didn't say a word, +1000 aura"
- A reply to a selfie: "the aura in this pic is unreal"
- A teasing comment: "bro is aura farming in every single photo"
- A self-roast in DMs: "waved back at someone who was waving at the person behind me, negative aura"

Aura edits live or die on how they look full screen, so it's worth checking the [Instagram Reel size](/blog/instagram-reel-size) before you export, and keeping the caption short with the [Instagram caption character counter](/tools/instagram-caption-character-counter).

## How to reply to aura comments

If someone says you have aura, it's a compliment. A short thanks keeps the aura intact; a long reply explaining how cool you were spends it. If someone docks you aura points for an embarrassing moment, the move is to lean in and score yourself even lower, which, by the logic of the joke, wins some back. If someone accuses you of aura farming, they're teasing you for trying too hard to look cool, and laughing about it is the only answer that doesn't confirm it.

**Someone commented about your aura. What kind?**
- "The aura is crazy" → It's praise. Say thanks and stop there.
- "-1000 aura" → Take the loss with a joke. Docking yourself more points wins some back.
- "Stop aura farming" → They think you're posing. Laugh it off rather than defend the pose.
- Talk of colors and energy → They may mean a spiritual aura, not the slang. Ask if you're unsure.

## When not to use aura slang

Aura is one of the friendlier slang words, but it still has limits. Docking someone aura points for an embarrassing moment is fun between friends and mean when it's aimed at a stranger who went viral for the wrong reasons. Keep the scoring jokes to people who are in on them.

For brands, aura is safer than most slang because the ordinary meaning is already positive. "This jacket has aura" reads fine even to people who don't know the meme. Where it goes wrong is aura points in serious contexts, like a support reply or a product recall, and aura farming jokes about real people. And because aura also has a spiritual meaning, wellness and astrology accounts should be clear about which sense they mean.

**Aura slang works when**
- [ ] You're praising someone's calm or style
- [ ] You're scoring your own embarrassing moment
- [ ] Your friends are in on the aura points joke
- [ ] Nobody could mistake it for a spiritual reading

## The other meanings of aura

If a search for aura brought you here by accident, you may want one of the older senses. In ordinary writing, an aura is simply an atmosphere or quality that seems to surround someone or something: an aura of calm, an aura of danger. In spiritual and New Age practice, an aura is a field of energy, often described in colors, that some people believe surrounds every person. In medicine, an aura is a warning sensation, such as flashing lights or tingling, that some people get shortly before a migraine or a seizure.

Context almost always makes the meaning obvious. A comment that says "-500 aura" under a video of someone slipping on ice is never about a migraine, and a post about aura colors is rarely about a soccer player.
