Bio stands for Biography. Bio is short for biography. On social media, your bio is the short description at the top of your profile, a line or two saying who you are or what the account is for, often with a link. Instagram allows 150 characters and X allows 160.

## What bio means

Bio is short for biography, but on a social profile it's far shorter than anything you'd find in a library. It's the few words under your name and profile picture that tell a visitor who you are, what you post or what you sell. On most networks it sits at the top of your profile, next to your [handle](/glossary/handle) and your [pfp](/glossary/pfp), and above your posts.

So when someone says "check my bio," they mean read the description on my profile. "It's in my bio" usually means a detail like pronouns, a location, a business email or the website link is written there. And "[link in bio](/glossary/link-in-bio)" means the website link sits on the profile, just below that description.

Networks name it differently. Instagram, X and Threads call it a bio. Facebook calls the spot the Intro section and says it's where you add a bio or brief description. LinkedIn splits it in two: the Headline below your name and a longer About section. YouTube uses a channel description shown in the channel header.

## Where the word bio comes from

Merriam-Webster defines bio as a biography or biographical sketch and dates its first known use to 1947. Its note on the word explains that bio covers both full biographies and the short sketches of a few sentences you'd submit for a conference or a newsletter. A social media bio is the shortest version of that second kind.

The prefix bio- in words like biology or biodegradable is a separate thing. Merriam-Webster traces that combining form to a Greek word meaning life. In casual speech, some people also say bio for biology class, so "I have bio at 9" has nothing to do with profiles.

## How long a bio can be on each network

Here's what each network's help center says about the bio field. Where a page doesn't give a number, we say so instead of guessing.

| Network | What it's called | Limit stated by the network | Good to know |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Instagram | Bio | 150 characters | Anyone can see your bio. Up to 5 links go in a separate Links field. |
| X | Bio | 160 characters | Edited alongside your name, location and one website. |
| Facebook | Intro section | Not stated on the page we checked | Information in the Intro section is always public. |
| LinkedIn | Headline and About | Not stated on the pages we checked | The Headline is the text below your name; About is a longer section further down. |
| YouTube | Channel description | Not stated on the page we checked | Shown in the channel header; edited in YouTube Studio under Customization, then Profile. |
| Threads | Bio | Not stated on the page we checked | Edited from Edit profile, alongside a Link field. |

- 150: characters in an Instagram bio
- 160: characters in an X bio
- 5: links allowed on an Instagram profile

Character counts can surprise you. Emoji and decorative fonts can count as more than one character, so a bio that looks short may hit the limit. Our counters check your text against each network before you save: the [Instagram bio counter](/tools/instagram-bio-character-counter), the [X bio counter](/tools/x-bio-character-counter), the [TikTok bio counter](/tools/tiktok-bio-character-counter) and the [LinkedIn headline counter](/tools/linkedin-headline-character-counter), which also covers the About section.

If you reuse one bio across networks, write it for the tightest limit you know, Instagram's 150 characters, and then add detail where there's more room, like a LinkedIn About section. And remember that a bio is public by design. Instagram says anyone can see your bio, and Facebook says the information in your Intro section is always public, so leave out anything you wouldn't put on a flyer, like a personal phone number or a home address.

## How to edit your bio

## What to put in your bio

A bio has one job: help the right people decide to follow, tap or get in touch. In a sentence or two, say who you are, what you post or offer, and what to do next. Everything else is optional, and a bio that tries to say everything usually says nothing clearly.

**A good social media bio**
- [ ] Says what you do or what the account is about in plain words
- [ ] Gives people a reason to follow, like what you post and how often
- [ ] Includes one clear next step, such as a link or how to reach you
- [ ] Uses the words people would search for, not just clever ones
- [ ] Fits the limit on every network where you reuse it
- [ ] Reads well aloud, so screen readers and new visitors get it

Keep your real or business name in the display name or the bio, even if your handle is something different, so people who search by name still find you. Write as you'd speak; jokes are fine on a personal account, but on a business profile, clarity wins. ### Bios for businesses and creators

A business bio should answer the questions a customer asks first: what you sell, where you are, when you're open and how to order or book. A creator bio should say what you make, how often, and where the newest thing lives. Both should match the tone of the posts below them, since the bio is the first thing a visitor reads and the posts are the second. Each network rewards a slightly different style, so we have bio generators for [TikTok](/tools/tiktok-bio-generator), [X](/tools/x-bio-generator), [YouTube](/tools/youtube-bio-generator) and [Facebook](/tools/facebook-bio-generator), plus a [LinkedIn headline generator](/tools/linkedin-headline-generator) for the line under your name.

## Bio examples

These are illustrative bios written for this page, not real accounts:

- "Hand-thrown mugs from a garage in Austin. New batch every first Friday."
- "Physical therapist. Short videos on fixing desk-job aches. Not medical advice."
- "Weeknight recipes in 30 minutes or less. Full recipes at the link below."
- "Product designer at a fintech startup. Writing about onboarding and forms."
- "Film photos, bad puns, good coffee. She/her."
- "Family bakery since 1987. Order by noon for next-day pickup."

Notice what they share: a clear subject in the first few words, something specific instead of a list of adjectives, and a hint at what to do next. For more ideas on a network with its own culture, see our [Discord bio ideas](/blog/discord-bio-ideas).

## Bio vs caption vs handle

**Bio**
- About the account as a whole
- On your profile, near the top
- Changed now and then

**Caption**
- About one post
- Under that post
- Written fresh every time

**Handle**
- Your unique @name
- Used to find and mention you
- Best kept the same for years

People mix these up all the time. The bio is about the account, a [caption](/glossary/caption) is about one post, and the handle is the name people type to find you. If a detail matters for every visitor, like your hours or your email, it belongs in the bio. If it matters for one post, it goes in the caption.

## Fancy fonts and emoji in bios

Styled letters copied from a font generator are Unicode characters, not real fonts, and they can count as more characters than they look. Screen readers may read them out oddly or skip them, and search may not match them to the plain word. Our guide to [social media fonts](/blog/social-media-fonts-copy-and-paste) explains why. A good rule: keep your name, what you do and how to contact you in plain text, and use styling or emoji only for decoration around them. After saving, look at your profile from a second phone or a logged-out browser, because a character that shows on your device can appear as an empty box on someone else's.
