A caption is the text that accompanies a photo or video. On social media it's the words you write under a post, which can include hashtags and mentions; on video, captions can also mean on-screen text that shows what's being said.

## What a caption is

A caption is the writing that goes with a picture. In a newspaper it's the line under a photo naming who's in it. On social media it's the text you add when you share a post: a sentence, a story, a question, a list, plus any [hashtags](/glossary/hashtag) and @mentions. It shows under the photo or video on Instagram and TikTok, and on text-first networks like X, LinkedIn and Threads, the post text plays the same role.

Merriam-Webster lists the senses you'd expect: a heading or title, the explanatory comment accompanying an illustration, and a subtitle in a movie or TV show. The social media caption is the second one, stretched far beyond a single line. Instagram's own help pages call it a caption, and Instagram's developer documentation says a caption can include hashtags and usernames, and that people you @mention get a notification.

## Captions vs closed captions

The word does double duty. A post caption is what you write. A closed caption is text on the video itself that shows what's being said, for people watching with the sound off or who are deaf or hard of hearing. They're different features, and on video-heavy apps you'll often use both.

Instagram can generate closed captions for reels automatically. Its help page says that when automatic closed captions are on, the speech in a reel is written out as text at the bottom using speech recognition. You switch it on in More options when you share a reel, with the toggle Enable closed captions, and a second toggle, Translate closed captions, controls translations. For reels you've already posted, open the reel, tap Options, then Edit, then More options. Closed captions are worth the extra tap: anyone watching with the sound off can still follow along, and for viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing they're the difference between following a video and guessing. Check the automatic text for mistakes, especially names and numbers, before you share.

## Where the word caption comes from

The word is older than photography. Merriam-Webster dates the noun to around 1670, in a legal sense: the part of a legal document showing where, when and by what authority it was taken or executed. It says the word is probably short for certificate of caption, with caption meaning a taking or seizure. The verb, to caption something, dates to 1848. Its later senses in Merriam-Webster cover headings, the text under pictures and film subtitles, and the social media caption grew out of the picture sense.

## Caption limits on each network

Each network caps how much you can write. These are the limits from each network's own help pages or developer documentation:

| Network | Limit | Source and notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Instagram | 2,200 characters and 20 @ tags; hashtags capped at 5 in the app | Developer documentation for the caption and tags; Instagram's help center says up to 5 hashtags per post |
| X | 280 characters | X's developer docs; emoji count as 2 characters each |
| Threads | 500 characters | Threads API overview for text posts |
| LinkedIn | 3,000 characters | LinkedIn Help; articles can run to 125,000 characters |
| YouTube | 100-character title, 5,000-character description | YouTube Help on editing video settings |

- 2,200: characters in an Instagram caption
- 280: characters in an X post
- 500: characters in a Threads post
- 3,000: characters in a LinkedIn post

*From each network's help or developer documentation.*

Counting isn't always one character per letter. X's documentation says every emoji counts as 2, so a caption full of emoji runs out of room faster. Our full [social media character limits guide](/blog/social-media-character-limits) covers every network, and the counters check a draft for you: the [Instagram caption counter](/tools/instagram-caption-character-counter), the [X character counter](/tools/twitter-character-counter), the [TikTok caption counter](/tools/tiktok-caption-character-counter) and the [LinkedIn character counter](/tools/linkedin-character-counter). The [post checker](/tools/post-checker) tests one caption against eight networks at once.

If you post the same caption everywhere, write for the shortest limit or give each network its own version. When you schedule through PostMesh, it checks each network's caption and hashtag limits before posting and warns you if a caption is too long, so a 2,200-character Instagram caption doesn't fail silently on X.

### What a caption looks like on each network

- Instagram: the text under a photo, video, carousel or reel, with room for 2,200 characters. Carousels can carry one caption or a caption per slide.
- X: there's no separate caption. The post text is the caption, capped at 280 characters, with emoji counting double.
- Threads: also text-first, with 500 characters for a text post.
- LinkedIn: the post text, up to 3,000 characters. Longer pieces belong in an article, which can run to 125,000.
- YouTube: the title and description do a caption's job. The title gets 100 characters and the description 5,000.
- TikTok: the text under a video. Our TikTok caption counter checks it against TikTok's limit.

Mentions deserve care. Instagram's developer documentation says people you @mention in a caption get a notification when the post is published, and a caption can hold up to 20 @ tags. Tag people who are genuinely in or behind the post; a pile of unrelated tags reads as spam to the people you've pinged.

## How to write a good caption

Treat the first line as the one that has to earn the rest. Say the interesting part first, then add detail. Write the way you'd talk to the person you want to reach, and end with something to do: a question, a link, a save, a tag.

**Before you post a caption**
- [ ] The first line works on its own
- [ ] It adds something the photo or video doesn't already show
- [ ] It ends with one clear next step
- [ ] Hashtags are few, relevant and at the end
- [ ] It fits the shortest limit of every network you're posting to
- [ ] Mentions and links are spelled correctly

Line breaks help long captions breathe. On Instagram, the [line break generator](/tools/instagram-line-break-generator) keeps the spacing you intended. If you're stuck, the [caption generator](/tools/caption-generator) drafts options to edit, though your own voice will always read better than a template.

A few habits to drop: opening with "So..." or a long preamble, repeating what the photo already shows, hiding the one important detail at the very end, and pasting the same block of hashtags under every post whatever it's about. If a caption only makes sense to people who saw your last three posts, add the missing context.

## Caption examples

Illustrative captions written for this page:

- "Three years, two moves and one very patient landlord later, the studio is finally open. Come say hi Saturday."
- "Swipe for the before. I still can't believe this was the same room."
- "The trick to crispy edges is a hot pan and patience. Full recipe in bio."
- "We're hiring a part-time barista. DM us or drop by with a resume."
- "Golden hour, no filter, zero regrets."
- "What should we test next? Most-liked comment wins."

The short ones work when the image does the talking and a long caption would only get in the way. The long ones work when the story is the point. A [carousel post](/glossary/carousel-post) can also have a separate caption on each slide if you choose Multiple captions, which suits step-by-step posts.

## Editing a caption after posting

On Instagram you can add, change or delete a caption after a post is live: tap Options above the photo or video, tap Edit, make your change and tap Done. That's handy for fixing a typo, adding a missed tag or updating a detail like a date or a price that changed after you posted. Other networks have their own rules about editing, so check before relying on it, and get the caption right before you share when you can.

## Caption vs bio vs hashtag

**Caption**
- Text for one post
- Written fresh every time
- Can hold hashtags and mentions

**Bio**
- Text for the whole account
- On your profile
- Changed now and then

**Hashtag**
- A # tag inside a caption
- Groups posts by topic
- Instagram's help center says up to 5 per post

Your [bio](/glossary/bio) describes the account; a caption describes one post. Hashtags live inside the caption, and on a [reel](/glossary/reel) or post, a few relevant tags usually say more about the content than a long generic block.
