Chopped is slang for unattractive or undesirable. People say a person is chopped when they think they look bad, and use it for things too, like an outfit, a haircut or a game. It's blunt, and often aimed at yourself as a joke.

## What chopped means

Chopped means ugly. [Merriam-Webster](https://www.merriam-webster.com/slang/chopped) defines the slang adjective as unattractive or undesirable, and notes that it's used for both people and things. "That guy is chopped" means he isn't good looking. "This update is chopped" means the update is bad.

It's a harsh word, softened only by how casually people throw it around. Plenty of uses are self-deprecating: someone posts a bad selfie and captions it "I'm chopped". Plenty of replies are reassurance: "you're not chopped, stop". Merriam-Webster's own examples include both, which tells you how the word lives online. It's a put-down that people aim at themselves almost as often as at anyone else.

Grammatically, it behaves like any adjective. People stack intensifiers on it (so chopped, lowkey chopped, actually chopped) and use it after look or feel ("I look chopped", "I feel chopped today"). Lowkey softens it into a half-joke. So and actually make it a real verdict. When it's about a thing, people usually mean the design or quality; when it's about a person, they almost always mean their face or overall look rather than their personality.

Don't confuse it with the everyday meaning of chopped, as in cut into pieces. The slang sense is an adjective about looks or quality, and you can tell from context. Nobody calling a celebrity chopped is talking about their cooking.

**About people**
- Means unattractive
- Can hurt if aimed at someone else
- Example: he's chopped without the hat

**About things**
- Means bad or low quality
- Lighter, closer to mid
- Example: that outfit is chopped

**About yourself**
- A self-deprecating joke
- Friends usually reply with reassurance
- Example: I look chopped today

## Where chopped comes from

Merriam-Webster says the slang sense is believed to have roots in African American English and has been around for decades, with some online commentators placing its start in the New York and New Jersey area. What's new is how many young people use it. [Know Your Meme](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/chopped-slang) also traces it to African American Vernacular English and notes Urban Dictionary entries tying it to New Jersey and New York slang.

According to Know Your Meme, the earliest definition on Urban Dictionary was added on December 16, 2014, defining it as a girl or boy who is ugly. An early viral use came on January 31, 2020, when a tweet called the Mona Lisa chopped. The big surge started in August 2024 with a TikTok meme, and by early 2025 the word had spread widely across Instagram, X and TikTok.

It has since moved off the screen. Merriam-Webster says there is evidence more people are using it in everyday conversation, and cites an August 2025 New York Times story about a woman whose TikTok on what she called the chopped man epidemic described her struggle to find men she found attractive. She told the paper the word was chronically online but had crept into how she and her friends actually talk.

## How people use chopped on social media

On [TikTok](/platform/tiktok), chopped is a comment-section staple. It's used to rate glow-ups and glow-downs, to react to dating content, and in self-deprecating videos where someone shows a bad angle. Know Your Meme records it being applied to a cat in February 2025, which shows how fast it stretched past people.

On X and [Threads](/platform/threads), it's often about things rather than people. Merriam-Webster cites a Bluesky post calling a line of outfits in a video game chopped. Fans call album covers, movie posters and redesigned logos chopped. On Instagram, it shows up as a joke caption on a bad photo, in comments between friends roasting each other, and in [DMs](/glossary/dm) where people send each other screenshots of a bad [pfp](/glossary/pfp) for a second opinion. Know Your Meme even notes a January 2025 joke about daily affirmations that simply said I'm not chopped.

- Caption on a blurry selfie: "woke up chopped, posting anyway"
- Comment on a logo redesign: "the old one was better, this is chopped"
- Group chat: "my passport photo is so chopped I can't travel"
- Reply to a friend's post: "you are not chopped, delete this tweet"
- Game review comment: "graphics are fine but the new outfits are chopped"
- Joke post: "daily reminder that you are not chopped"

## How to reply to chopped

What you say depends on who's chopped. If a friend says it about themselves, they usually want a little reassurance. If someone says it about a thing, it's just an opinion you can agree or disagree with. If someone says it about you, you can laugh, ignore it, or block, depending on who they are. Arguing with a stranger about whether you're attractive is a fight nobody wins.

**Who or what was called chopped?**
- Your friend, about themselves → Reassure them. You're not chopped, the lighting is.
- A thing, like an outfit or logo → It's an opinion. Agree, disagree or move on.
- You, by a friend teasing → Laugh it off or roast them back gently.
- You, by a stranger → You owe nothing. Ignore it, or block them if it keeps up.

- To a friend's self-roast: "absolutely not, you look great"
- To a friend's tease: "says the guy with that haircut"
- To a stranger: no reply needed

## Why chopped can sting

The jokey tone hides how blunt the word is. Calling someone chopped is calling them ugly, and a comment section full of it can pile onto one person fast. The reassuring replies that show up so often, the you're-not-chopped messages, exist because people take it to heart.

It also lands differently depending on who's reading. A teenager who already worries about their looks hears it differently from an adult who's roasting a friend, and comment sections don't sort readers by age. A joke written for three friends can be read by thousands of people you've never met. That's worth a second's thought before you post it under someone else's photo.

That's why aiming it at real strangers, especially in their own comments, is a different act from roasting a friend who's in on it. It's also why it should never be used about kids. Calling a child ugly is cruel no matter how trendy the word is, and adults doing it in public comments is worse.

## When not to use it

Keep chopped for friends, for yourself and for things. Skip it in work chats, in replies to customers and anywhere you'd be commenting on a real person's looks without being asked. Brand accounts can get away with calling their own old logo chopped. They can't get away with calling a customer, a competitor's employee or a creator chopped.

It's also worth remembering where the word comes from. Merriam-Webster places its roots in African American English. Brands borrowing slang from a community they aren't part of often come across as trying too hard, and that's worth weighing before you drop it into a campaign.

**Fine to say chopped when**
- [ ] You're talking about yourself or a thing, not a stranger
- [ ] Your friend is in on the joke
- [ ] It isn't about a child
- [ ] It isn't a work chat or a customer reply
- [ ] On a brand account, the target is your own product

## Chopped compared with similar slang

| Term | What it means | How it differs |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Chopped | Unattractive or bad | Blunt judgment of one person or thing |
| Mid | Average, nothing special | Milder; mediocre rather than bad |
| Mogged | Outshone by someone better looking | A comparison; chopped needs none |
| NPC | Someone who seems to act without thought | About behavior, not looks |
| Aura | The impressive presence someone gives off | Roughly the opposite: a compliment |
| The ick | A sudden turn-off about someone | A feeling you get, not a verdict on looks |

Chopped often appears next to [mog](/glossary/mog): the person who gets mogged is sometimes the one called chopped. [The ick](/glossary/ick) is what happens when someone you liked suddenly seems unattractive because of something they did. [Unc](/glossary/unc) is another roast, aimed at someone acting old rather than looking bad. If you want the reverse, someone with [aura](/glossary/aura) is the opposite of chopped, and calling someone an [NPC](/glossary/npc) is about how they act, not how they look. Know Your Meme also records a blend called chuzz, which mixes chopped with the -uzz word [huzz](/glossary/huzz), a crude term covered on its own page.
