Close Friends is a private list on Instagram that lets you share a story, reel, post or note with only the people you've added. People on it see a green ring or a Close Friends label on that content, but they aren't notified when you add or remove them.

## What Close Friends means on Instagram

Close Friends is a smaller audience you choose yourself. You make a list of accounts, and when you share something you can pick Close Friends instead of all your followers. Only the people on that list will see it. Everyone else sees your normal posts and stories as if nothing else exists.

When someone says they're on your close friends, or asks to be added to your CF, they mean this list. When they post a story "for close friends only," they mean it went to that inner circle. The feature started with stories, and Instagram's help center now says you can choose Close Friends when you share things like a post, a note, a reel or a story.

It isn't a separate account. That's the key difference from a [finsta](/glossary/finsta), a second private account some people run for a smaller audience. Close Friends works inside your main account, with one list you manage from your profile.

You'll see a few versions of the phrase. CF is the casual shorthand, as in "posting the real pics on CF." A close friends story, or a CF story, is a story shared to the list. Being "added to close friends" is treated as a small compliment, and being taken off can sting, which is why it helps that Instagram stays silent about both. Instagram itself writes the feature name both as Close Friends and as close friends list in its help pages.

## When Instagram launched Close Friends

Instagram announced Close Friends on its blog on November 30, 2018, as a way to share stories with just the people you've added. The announcement said that as Instagram's community grew, what you want to share isn't always for everyone, and that only you can see your list and no one can request to be added. It also introduced the color cue still used today: a green badge on stories and a green ring around the profile photo in the stories tray.

Since then the list has spread beyond stories. Instagram's help center has separate pages for sharing reels with your close friends list, and [Instagram Notes](/glossary/instagram-notes), added in 2022, offer Close friends as one of their two audiences.

## How to make a Close Friends list

You build and edit the list from your profile menu. Instagram's iPhone steps:

Instagram: Profile › Menu › Who can see your content › Close Friends

*From Instagram's Create a Close Friends list help page.*

1. Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
2. Tap Menu in the top right.
3. Below Who can see your content, tap Close Friends.
4. Tap Select next to each person you want to add, or tap Search to find someone.
5. To take someone off, tap Done next to their name.
6. Tap Done at the bottom to save.

Instagram says people won't be notified when you add or remove them, and you can change the list whenever you like. Nobody can request to be added. That last point matters: if someone asks you to put them on your close friends, they're asking you directly, because the app has no button for it.

## How to share with Close Friends

For a story, make it as usual: tap Create at the top or swipe right in Feed, tap Story, take or pick a photo or video, then tap Close Friends at the bottom when you're ready to share. Stories shared with close friends disappear after 24 hours, just like regular stories.

For a [reel](/glossary/reel), tap Create, then Reel, record or pick your clips and tap Next. On the share screen, tap Audience, select Close Friends, tap Back, then Share. For a note, pick Close friends instead of Followers you follow back when you post it.

> Reels shared with Close Friends have one quirk Instagram spells out: if someone on your list likes, comments on or shares the reel, other people on your list can see their username and how they interacted. Your close friends can see each other's activity on it.

## What the green ring and Close Friends label mean

If someone has added you to their list, you'll see a Close Friends label when you view their close friends stories, reels or notes, and a green ring around their profile photo. The ring is the giveaway most people notice: a green ring instead of the usual colorful one means the story waiting for you was shared with a small list, and you're on it.

**What does it mean when you see a green ring?**
- Green ring around someone's profile photo → They shared a story to their Close Friends list, and you're on it.
- Close Friends label on a story, reel or note → That piece of content went only to their list.
- The usual colorful ring → A regular story shared with all their followers.
- No ring at all → No current story you can see. It doesn't tell you whether you're on their list.

So people on your list do find out they're on it, but only when you share something to the list. Instagram's help page says it directly: people on your close friends list will know they're on it. If you add someone and never post to Close Friends, they have no reason to know. If you remove them, they won't get a notification, though they may notice the green ring stops appearing.

## How people use Close Friends

Most people use it for the stuff that's too personal, too silly or too frequent for everyone. A few illustrative captions on close friends stories:

- "CF only because my mom follows my main."
- "Unfiltered vacation dump, you've been warned."
- "Voting on outfits for Saturday, help."
- "Real update on the job hunt, not for the timeline."
- "Early look at the new collection before it goes public Friday."
- "Who wants leftovers? Come by after 7."

Keep the list current. A Close Friends list made three years ago may include people you've drifted from, and each new story goes to all of them. Your [mutuals](/glossary/mutuals) aren't automatically your close friends either; the list only contains people you've added.

**Before you add someone to Close Friends**
- [ ] You'd be fine with them seeing every close friends story you post
- [ ] You'd be fine with the others on the list seeing how they react to your reels
- [ ] You're adding them because you want to, not because they asked
- [ ] You'll remember they're on it when you post something personal next month
- [ ] You're comfortable that they'll know they're on your list

*The list is easy to edit, and Instagram doesn't notify people when you add or remove them.*

A good habit is to open the list every few months and read it top to bottom. Because Instagram never tells anyone they were removed, pruning it is quiet. The harder part is remembering who's on it in the moment you post. If you hesitate before sharing something to Close Friends, that's usually a sign the list has grown past the people you meant it for.

## When not to rely on Close Friends

- Don't treat it as a vault. Anyone on the list can screenshot or record what they see and pass it on.
- Check the audience button before you share. Tapping the regular share option instead of Close Friends is an easy slip, and the story goes to everyone.
- Brand accounts should think twice. Instagram's help center says people on your list know they're on it, so a brand list can feel like favoritism to anyone who isn't.
- For a large group of fans, a [broadcast channel](/glossary/broadcast-channel) is built for one-to-many updates, while Close Friends is designed for a smaller circle.
- For one person, just send a [DM](/glossary/dm).

Close friends stories you want to keep can go into [highlights](/glossary/instagram-highlights), but Instagram says highlights are visible to the people you've allowed to see your story, so think about which audience a highlight is for before adding personal stories to it. For the difference between stories, reels and feed posts in general, see our [post vs story vs reel guide](/blog/instagram-post-vs-story-vs-reel).

## Close Friends vs other ways to limit an audience

| Option | Who sees it | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Close Friends | Only people on your list | Personal stories, reels and notes for an inner circle |
| Second account (finsta) | Whoever follows that account | A separate identity with its own followers |
| Broadcast channel | People who join | One-to-many updates from creators |
| Group chat or DM | People in the conversation | Talking with a few specific people |

## Questions

### Does someone know if you add them to Close Friends?

Not when you add them. Instagram doesn't notify people, but they'll see a Close Friends label and a green ring the next time you share something to the list.

### Does someone know if you remove them from Close Friends?

Instagram says people aren't notified when you remove them. They may notice that your green-ring stories stop appearing.

### What does a green circle on Instagram mean?

A green ring around someone's profile photo means they shared a story to their Close Friends list and you're on it.

### Can I see whose Close Friends list I'm on?

Only indirectly. You'll know you're on someone's list when you see a Close Friends label or a green ring on something they shared.

### Can you request to be on someone's Close Friends?

No. Instagram says no one can request to be added, so the only way in is for the account owner to add you.

### Is there a limit to how many people can be on Close Friends?

Instagram's help pages don't state a limit for the list.
