A finsta, short for fake Instagram, is a second Instagram account, usually private, that someone shares only with close friends. It's where people post the silly, messy or personal things they'd never put on their main account.

## What finsta means

A finsta is a secondary Instagram account. Merriam-Webster defines it as a secret or incognito account, and Dictionary.com describes it as a usually private account where people are more relaxed about what they post and share it with close friends.

The fake part is a little misleading. A finsta isn't a bot or an impersonation. It's run by a real person under their own control. It's fake only in contrast to the main account, which people call their rinsta, for real Instagram. The rinsta is polished and public. The finsta is where the blurry photos, inside jokes and honest rants go.

The word works as a noun (my finsta, her finsta) and, Dictionary.com notes, sometimes as a verb for posting to one. The plural is finstas. The full form, finstagram, is rarer now, and the short version has won.

## Where finsta comes from

Finsta blends fake and Insta, the common nickname for Instagram. Dictionary.com traces finstagram back to late July 2011, when it meant something else: a few Twitter users called the photos they posted in tweets finstagrams, a joke about using Twitter like the then-new Instagram app. Around the same time, people used it as a fish pun.

The current meaning came a little later. Dictionary.com says it probably took hold around 2013, which matches Merriam-Webster's first known use date for finsta. It got more attention from 2014 and reached mainstream media coverage in mid to late 2015, including a New York Times piece that year.

- 2013: The secret second account meaning takes hold; Merriam-Webster's first known use of finsta
- 2014: The term gets more attention, according to Dictionary.com
- 2015: Mainstream media coverage, including The New York Times

## How people use a finsta

A typical finsta has a small, hand-picked audience: best friends, a sibling, maybe a partner. The posts are the opposite of a curated grid. Unflattering selfies, screenshots of group chats, long captions about a bad day, ten photos of the same dog. Dictionary.com points out people often post more often on a finsta precisely because there's no pressure to look good.

Not every second account is about privacy, though. Some people keep one for a hobby, like film photography or baking, so their main followers aren't flooded with it. Others use one to follow accounts quietly. Those are closer to alt accounts than to a true finsta, but the word gets stretched to cover them.

- "posting this on my finsta because my aunt follows my main"
- "if I let you follow my finsta, we're friends for life"
- "finsta is for the 47 photos of my cat"
- "just found out my coworker has a finsta and it's mostly bread"
- "requesting your finsta, accept me"
- "rinsta: beach sunset. finsta: me crying at the airport"

> These are made-up examples of typical phrasing, not quotes from real accounts.

## How to make a finsta

Instagram lets you add more than one profile and switch between them without logging out. In the app, its help center says to go to your profile, tap your profile name at the top, tap Add Instagram account, then Create new account, and follow the steps. You can also choose to give the new profile its own password instead of adding it to Accounts Center. Instagram allows up to 10 accounts logged in at once.

Then make it private, which is the step that turns a second account into a finsta. Pick a [handle](/glossary/handle) that doesn't scream your name if you want it to stay low-key. If you're stuck, an [Instagram username generator](/tools/instagram-username-generator) can suggest ideas, and our guide on [checking if an Instagram username is available](/blog/how-to-check-if-an-instagram-username-is-available) covers the rest. You might also pick a different [PFP](/glossary/pfp) and a vague [bio](/glossary/bio), since both stay visible even on a private account.

## How private is a finsta, really?

Less private than people assume. Instagram's help center lays out what a private account hides and what it doesn't. Only people you approve can follow you, and only your followers can see your photos and videos. Your posts stay out of search results, Explore and hashtag pages, and off search engines.

But your profile photo, name, username and bio are visible to anyone, on or off Instagram, even when the account is private. And your followers can share your posts with other people on Instagram unless you change that setting. Nothing stops a follower from taking a screenshot, either.

**What a private account hides**
- Photos and videos, from non-followers
- Posts in Explore, search and hashtags
- Links in search engine results

**What it doesn't hide**
- Profile photo, name and username
- Your bio
- Anything a follower screenshots or shares

So treat a finsta as semi-private, not secret. Write every post as if a follower might show it to someone else. If the stakes are high, a smaller circle beats a hidden account.

### Keeping it separate from your main

A few habits keep a finsta from being traced back to your rinsta. Don't link it in your main bio or tag it from your main posts. Watch what you sync, too: Instagram's help center notes that accounts in the same Accounts Center can sync details such as your name and profile picture, so check those settings if you want the two to look unrelated. Creating the finsta with its own password, outside Accounts Center, is an option Instagram offers when you add the profile.

Finally, review your follower requests rather than approving them in bulk. On a private account, the follower list is the privacy setting. Every approval is a decision about who gets to see the unfiltered version of you.

## Finsta vs rinsta, alts and Close Friends

| Option | What it is | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Finsta | A second, usually private account for a small circle | Unfiltered posts you'd never put on your main |
| Rinsta | Your main, real Instagram account | Public, polished posts |
| Alt or side account | A second account for a topic or hobby | Keeping a niche separate from your main feed |
| Close Friends | A list of people on your main account | Sharing a single story with a few people |

If you only want to share the occasional story with a few people, [Close Friends](/glossary/close-friends) on your main account might be simpler than running two accounts. If you want a place for a whole different side of yourself, a finsta does that better. People who dump dozens of casual photos at once often do it on a finsta, but a [photo dump](/glossary/photo-dump) can live on a main account too.

## How to reply when someone mentions their finsta

Being invited to follow someone's finsta is a mark of trust. A follow request and a short "accepted me yet?" is all it takes. Once you're in, the unspoken rule is discretion: don't screenshot posts into other chats, and don't bring finsta content up in front of people who aren't on it.

If someone declines your request, take it in stride. Finsta audiences are deliberately small, and being left out usually says more about the size of the circle than about you. The same goes for [mutuals](/glossary/mutuals) on a main account who keep their finsta to a few people.

## When not to use a finsta

Don't run a brand or business from a finsta. Instagram notes that business profiles can't be made private at all, so a business that wants to be found should use a public professional account and post openly. A finsta for a company makes no sense.

For teens, Instagram says accounts for people under 18 start private by default, and younger teens need a parent's or guardian's permission to switch to public. That makes a main account more private than it used to be, which reduces some of the reasons for a finsta in the first place. And for anyone, a finsta isn't a safe place for anything you'd regret seeing in public, since the people on it can still share what you post.

## Questions

### What does finsta stand for?

Fake Instagram. It's a blend of fake and Insta, and Merriam-Webster gives its etymology as fake Instagram account.

### What is a rinsta?

Your real Instagram, the main public account. It's the counterpart to a finsta.

### Is having a finsta against Instagram's rules?

A second account is a normal feature: Instagram's help center explains how to add multiple profiles and switch between them. A finsta is simply one you keep private.

### Can people see who follows my finsta?

If the account is private, Instagram says only your followers can see the private accounts that follow you. Your profile photo, name, username and bio stay visible to anyone.

### How many Instagram accounts can I have?

Instagram's help center says you can have up to 10 accounts logged in at one time.

### Why is it called fake if it's a real account?

Fake only sets it apart from your main account. A finsta is run by a real person, not a bot; it's just the unofficial, private version of you.
