# What does FYP mean?

FYP stands for For You page. FYP stands for For You page, the personalized feed you see first when you open TikTok. TikTok fills it with videos its recommendation system predicts you'll like, so "it's all over my FYP" means TikTok keeps showing it to you.

## What FYP means

FYP is short for For You page. It's TikTok's main feed, the endless stream of videos that starts playing when you open the app. TikTok's help center describes it as the first feed you see, built from your interests and the way you engage, and it notes that the feed reflects you more the longer you use the app.

TikTok itself says For You feed rather than page. Its Community Guidelines even shorten it to FYF. Users settled on FYP years ago, though, and that's the version you'll see in comments, captions and hashtags.

People use the term in three ways. "On my FYP" means a video or trend keeps showing up for you. "Made it to the FYP" means a video reached people who don't follow the creator. And #fyp is a hashtag creators add in the hope that TikTok will push their video wider. More on whether that works below.

Because every feed is built for one person, your FYP is a bit of a mirror. When someone says their FYP knows them too well, they mean the app has picked up on their habits, sometimes ones they never said out loud.

## Where FYP comes from

The term comes straight from TikTok's For You feed. Merriam-Webster lists FYP as an abbreviation and a noun meaning a personalized social media feed, and dates its first known use to 2019. The dictionary's definition isn't tied to TikTok alone, which reflects how people now use it for any app's recommendation feed, but TikTok is where it started and where it's still used most.

In June 2020 TikTok published a newsroom post, How TikTok recommends videos #ForYou, explaining the system behind the feed. It called the For You feed central to the app and the place where most users spend their time. That post, and TikTok's later help page on how it recommends content, are the best first-hand sources on how the FYP works.

## How TikTok says it picks videos for your FYP

TikTok's help center groups the signals into three kinds. User interactions are what you do: videos you like, share, comment on, watch to the end or skip, and accounts you follow back. Content information is about the video: its sounds, hashtags, number of views and the country it was posted in. User information covers your device settings, language, location, time zone and device type.

Those signals aren't equal. TikTok says that for most users, interactions, including how long you watch, count more than the rest. Its 2020 post gave an example: finishing a longer video from start to end is a strong sign of interest, while you and the creator being in the same country is a weak one. Device and account settings get lower weight because they aren't preferences you actively express.

**User interactions**
- Likes, shares, comments
- Watching to the end or skipping
- Weighted most, per TikTok

**Content information**
- Sounds and hashtags
- Number of views
- Country it was posted in

A few other details from TikTok are worth knowing. Follower count isn't a direct factor, the 2020 post says, even though bigger accounts tend to get more views because more people follow them. The feed generally won't show two videos in a row with the same sound or from the same creator, and it skips duplicates, videos you've already seen and spam. It also mixes in videos that don't match your interests on purpose, so you can find new things and the system can learn what wider audiences like.

New accounts start in one of two ways. TikTok may ask you to pick interests such as pets or travel. If you skip that, it shows popular recent videos suited to a broad audience and adjusts from your first likes, comments and replays.

## Does the #fyp hashtag work?

Here's the honest answer: nothing TikTok has published says #fyp, #foryou or #foryoupage gets special treatment. TikTok does list hashtags among the content information that may influence recommendations. But in its own descriptions, hashtags are clues about what a video is about, matched against what each viewer engages with. A tag added to millions of unrelated videos says almost nothing about yours.

So #fyp is best treated as harmless and probably useless. It won't get a video banned, and it won't put it in front of everyone either. A specific [hashtag](/glossary/hashtag) that names your topic, a hook in the first seconds, and a video people watch to the end all line up much better with the signals TikTok says it weighs most. If you're writing captions, a [TikTok hashtag generator](/tools/tiktok-hashtag-generator) can suggest tags that match the subject instead of the feed.

> TikTok doesn't publish a full list of signals or their exact weights, and it says it keeps adjusting both. Anyone claiming a secret formula for the FYP is guessing.

## How people use FYP on social media

On TikTok, FYP shows up mostly in comments, where people react to how they found a video or how oddly well it fits them. Creators use it in captions and in videos about their own reach. Off TikTok, on X, Instagram or in group chats, it's become shorthand for whatever an algorithm keeps serving you, even outside TikTok.

- "how did this end up on my fyp, I've never even owned a cat"
- "my fyp is just people restoring old furniture now and I'm not complaining"
- "this is my third video and it made it to the fyp somehow"
- "the fyp knows me better than my friends do"
- "if this is on your fyp, you're the target audience"
- "praying this one hits the fyp #fyp"

> These are made-up examples of typical phrasing, not quotes from real accounts.

## How to change what's on your FYP

If your feed has drifted somewhere you don't like, TikTok gives you a few tools. Its help center lists Not interested, which shows you fewer videos like the one you flagged, Refresh your feed, which resets recommendations with some popular videos, Filter keywords, which removes videos with certain words or hashtags, and Manage topics, which lets you adjust how much you see of different subjects.

To find out why a specific video appeared, tap the Share button on the side of the post, then Why this post. TikTok lists reasons such as you engaged with similar posts, the post is popular in your country, it was created recently, or you follow the creator.

## Getting your own videos onto the FYP

There's no switch, but TikTok's rules tell you what keeps a video out. Its Community Guidelines say some content that may not suit a broad audience is ineligible for the For You feed, even if it stays up. Videos that were just uploaded or are under review, and spam aimed at inflating traffic, may also be left out, according to the 2020 post. TikTok adds that a video with few views hasn't necessarily broken a rule, and that creators can check TikTok's analytics to see if a video was made ineligible.

Beyond that, the signals above point the way: make videos people watch through, rewatch and share. Our guide on [why a TikTok isn't getting views](/blog/why-is-my-tiktok-not-getting-views) walks through the common causes, and [the best time to post on TikTok](/blog/best-time-to-post-on-tiktok) covers timing. If you plan videos ahead, PostMesh can [schedule TikTok videos](/blog/how-to-schedule-tiktok-videos) to go out at the time you pick, since TikTok has no scheduling of its own.

Features like [Duet](/glossary/duet) and [Stitch](/glossary/stitch) also give your video a way to be seen alongside someone else's. And if views drop suddenly, read up on [shadowbans](/glossary/shadowban) before assuming the worst. TikTok's own guidelines note that videos kept off the feed can still be found through search and your profile.

## FYP vs the Following and Friends feeds

| Feed | What it shows | What TikTok says weighs most |
| --- | --- | --- |
| For You | Recommended videos from anyone, picked for you | Your interactions, including watch time |
| Following | Videos from creators you follow, ranked for you | Your interactions, including watch time |
| Friends | Followers you follow back, accounts you follow and suggested accounts | Your interactions, including likes and comments |

The FYP is the only one of the three that regularly shows strangers, which is why creators care about it most. It's also why a single video can reach far more people than a creator's follower count. ## Questions

### What does FYP stand for?

For You page. It's TikTok's personalized home feed, which TikTok officially calls the For You feed.

### Does putting #fyp in a caption help?

TikTok has never said it does. Hashtags are one input among many, and a tag used on millions of unrelated videos tells the system little about yours.

### Why is my FYP showing me random videos?

TikTok mixes in videos outside your usual interests on purpose, to help you find new things. If you've just refreshed your feed, you'll also see popular videos while it relearns your taste.

### How do I reset my FYP?

Use TikTok's Refresh your feed option for a fresh start, then like and watch what you actually enjoy. Not interested and keyword filters help trim what you don't want.

### Does follower count affect getting on the FYP?

Not directly, according to TikTok. Larger accounts tend to get more views because more people follow them, but follower count isn't itself a ranking factor.

### What does "this is on my FYP" mean?

That TikTok keeps recommending that video or trend to the person saying it.

### Is FYP only a TikTok term?

It started there, but people now use it for any app's recommendation feed. Merriam-Webster defines it as a personalized social media feed.
