Gyat (also gyatt) is a clipped, emphatic version of goddamn, usually shouted in reaction to someone with a curvy body, especially a large butt. It can also mean the butt itself. It's popular with younger gamers and Gen Alpha, and it isn't G-rated.

## What gyat means

Gyat is an exclamation. It's a squeezed-down way of saying goddamn, and people blurt it out when they see someone they find physically attractive, most often someone with a big butt. [Know Your Meme](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/gyat) describes it as usually said quickly and emphatically when such a person walks by, and notes it can also be used as a noun for the butt itself.

It has a broader sense too. A [TODAY](https://www.today.com/today/amp/rcna129527) explainer for parents reports that Dictionary.com defines it as an expression of strong excitement, surprise or admiration. In practice, kids sometimes shout it at things that have nothing to do with bodies, just because the word is loud and funny. But the body-focused meaning is the one most people mean, and the one adults react to.

You'll see it spelled gyat, gyatt or GYAAATT, with extra letters for extra volume. TODAY notes a backronym that monitoring company Bark has reported, girl, your a*s is thick, but the experts it quotes trace the word to goddamn, not to an acronym.

**Main sense**
- An exclamation at someone's body
- Also a noun for a butt
- Not G-rated

**Broader sense**
- Surprise or excitement in general
- Shouted because it sounds funny
- Common in kids' meme jokes

*Kids often use the second sense. Adults usually hear the first.*

## Where gyat comes from

The word grew out of goddamn. TODAY quotes Columbia linguist John McWhorter, who says gyat evolved from a heightened pronunciation along the lines of GOT-damn. University of Wisconsin-Madison professor Kelly Elizabeth Wright tells TODAY there are competing theories about its roots, including Black Southern, Jamaican and broader Black origins, and that it's used most by younger online gamers.

Online, the full phrase came first. Know Your Meme finds gyat damn on Twitter as early as January 2009, and records Nicki Minaj using it in a tweet on January 18, 2012. Know Your Meme cites a 2015 reply on Twitter pointing to her as the likely source of its early popularity. There was also an unrelated use: Know Your Meme notes that fans of the band The 1975 used GYAT as an abbreviation for one of the songs on their 2018 album A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships. That GYAT has nothing to do with the slang, so if you see it in an old music thread, it's about the song.

The short, shouted version took off on Twitch. Know Your Meme says that in June 2021 streamer YourRAGE began yelling GYATT whenever he spotted a woman with a large butt, pausing the video while his chat spammed the word, and calls that the main reason the term became a meme. By early 2022 it was common in TikTok captions and text overlays. TODAY credits Gen Alpha, kids born after 2012, with bringing it to wide attention, and notes it was among the hundreds of nominees for the American Dialect Society's 2023 Word of the Year.

## How to pronounce gyat

TODAY says it rhymes with squat, bought or Fiat, depending on how you say the g. That's why you'll hear it both as a single quick syllable and as something closer to two. Either way, the delivery matters more than the vowels: it's meant to be loud, sudden and drawn out, which is why it so often gets extra letters in writing. The written GYAAATT is trying to capture the sound of someone shouting it on stream.

The pronunciation also explains the spelling. Because the word started as a sound rather than an acronym, there was never one correct way to write it. Gyat and gyatt are both common, and neither is more correct. If you see GYAT in all caps, it doesn't mean it's an abbreviation. It usually just means someone is yelling.

## How people use gyat on social media

Gyat is at home in streaming and gaming spaces. On Twitch, it's a chat reaction. On [TikTok](/platform/tiktok) and [YouTube](/platform/youtube), it appears in captions, overlays and comments, and TODAY reports teens also use it on Discord and in messages, partly to save characters. Know Your Meme catalogs spinoff jokes like Level 1 Gyatt and Gyatterson High School, part of a wave of Gen Alpha meme humor that stacks words like gyat, [rizz](/glossary/rizz) and Ohio into absurd sentences.

A lot of kid usage is closer to nonsense than to commentary. Shouting gyat in class or in a game lobby is often about getting a laugh with a forbidden-sounding word, much like [skibidi](/glossary/skibidi). Know Your Meme even records a January 2024 tweet punning on The Great Gatsby with great gyatts, which passed 2.1 million views.

- Twitch chat, spammed: "GYATTTT"
- Kid in a game lobby, about a surprise win: "GYAT, we actually did it"
- Meme caption mixing slang: "rizz level 100, gyat level 1"
- Parent texting a teen: "what does gyat mean and should I be worried"

> These examples show how the word appears so you can recognize it. They aren't suggestions to use it, especially about real people.

## Is gyat offensive?

It's crude rather than a slur. TODAY calls it not a G-rated word. Slang expert David Burke tells TODAY it isn't an insult, since it's essentially admiring someone's body. Titania Jordan of Bark adds that using it in front of a group of kids will embarrass most of them.

Whether it's offensive depends on who it's aimed at. Shouted at a stranger, especially a woman walking by, it's a comment on her body she didn't ask for, the online version of a catcall. Said about a meme or a game, it's mostly harmless noise. Aimed at a kid or teen, by anyone, it's not okay.

## How to reply to gyat

If you're a parent, the experts in TODAY's piece suggest not overreacting. Burke points out that teen slang is age-stamped and that teens tend to drop a word once parents start using it. Jordan suggests raising it privately, for example by texting your teen to ask about it, or turning slang into a game where they quiz you.

**Who said gyat?**
- Your kid or a student, as a joke → Ask privately what they think it means, and explain why it isn't for school.
- A stranger, about your body → You owe nothing. Ignore it, or block if it continues.
- Chat on a stream you're watching → It's stream culture. Mute or leave if it bothers you.
- A friend, about a meme → It's meme noise. Laugh or roll your eyes.

## When not to use it

Keep gyat out of brand posts, work chats and anything with a broad audience. It's a sexual comment at heart, and a brand using it, even ironically, is a brand commenting on bodies. Never use it about a real person who didn't invite it, and never about anyone under 18. Adults dropping it into conversation to sound young usually just embarrass the kids around them, which is exactly what Jordan warns about.

If you're a creator with a young audience, think about how your comments read to parents too. A comment section full of gyat under a video of a person is easy for parents and brands to take the wrong way, even if your intent was a joke about something else. You can't control every comment, but you can avoid prompting them with your own captions.

## Gyat compared with related slang

| Term | What it means | How it compares |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Gyat | Goddamn, at someone's curvy body; also a butt | Crude, body-focused |
| Rizz | Charm or flirting skill | About personality, not bodies |
| Huzz | A respelling of a crude word for women | Also crude, also from streaming culture |
| Skibidi | A nonsense word from a viral video series | Silly rather than sexual |
| Sigma | A lone-wolf ideal, mostly used as a joke | A self-image word, not about bodies |

Gyat travels with the same pack of streamer and Gen Alpha slang. [Huzz](/glossary/huzz) came out of streaming culture too and is also crude. [Sigma](/glossary/sigma) and [aura](/glossary/aura) are the self-image words in the same memes. And [mog](/glossary/mog), from looksmaxxing forums, is another word built around judging appearance.
