Huzz is a stylized way of saying h*es, a crude slang word for women, usually in the phrase the huzz. It took off in 2023 through Kai Cenat's streams and spread on TikTok. It's often used jokingly, but the word it stands for is degrading.

## What huzz means

Huzz is a respelling of h*es. [Merriam-Webster](https://www.merriam-webster.com/slang/huzz) lists it as online slang for women and says that, like the word it comes from, it can be a slangy, cheeky way of referring to women broadly. It's a plural noun, and Merriam-Webster notes it usually comes with the in front: the huzz.

It doesn't mean husband, and it has nothing to do with huzzah, a point the [Daily Dot](https://www.dailydot.com/news/huzz-explained-scrolling-in-the-deep/) makes for parents who guessed otherwise. When someone says they're doing something for the huzz, they mean to impress girls or women, usually in a joking, over-the-top way.

The spelling is what makes it feel playful. Changing the vowel sound and adding the buzzy -uzz ending turns a crude word into something that sounds like a cartoon. But the meaning underneath hasn't changed, which is why many people still find it offensive, and why it's worth understanding before you repeat it.

**What it sounds like**
- A silly, made-up word
- A cartoonish -uzz ending
- Harmless meme talk

**What it actually means**
- A respelling of a crude word for women
- Used about women as a group
- Offensive to many people

*The spelling is new. The meaning underneath isn't.*

## Where huzz comes from

Huzz is tied to Twitch streamer Kai Cenat. Merriam-Webster says it has been credited to him, much like rizz, and that a friend reportedly said it in one of his videos in 2023, after which it spread fast. [Know Your Meme](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/huzz) dates the earliest known clip to February 2023, during a livestream where Cenat is teaching an older man to dance and stresses the pronunciation of for the huzz. Accounts differ slightly on who said it first on that stream, but every source points to his community.

Know Your Meme's explainer on the -uzz words describes huzz as coming from African American Vernacular English and popularized by Black creators and streamers. Know Your Meme says an Urban Dictionary definition appeared on February 18, 2023, days after that first clip. Through 2023 it mostly stayed inside Cenat's fan spaces, including his subreddit, where fans proposed a da huzz emote.

TikTok carried it further. Know Your Meme points to a January 31, 2024 video captioned with a line about the huzz that passed 1.6 million plays, and says that's when the word spread beyond Cenat's community. By October 2024, Know Your Meme says, a tweet about the huzz flaking on weekend plans gathered more than 56,000 likes in a week. Explainers for confused parents and teachers followed within weeks.

## Why huzz is considered crude

The word it stands for has long been used to put women down. The Daily Dot notes that h*es has been used to degrade women, especially young women, and that huzz draws disapproval for the same reason. It treats women as a group to be chased or impressed, not as people.

Plenty of people using huzz are kids and teens who see it as a funny sound, and many uses are self-mocking jokes about guys trying too hard. That's real context. It doesn't change what the word refers to, and it's why teachers and parents often object when they find out. The Daily Dot puts it simply: it can be offensive to some people.

There's also an age gap in how the word lands. To a lot of younger users, huzz is mostly a sound from a streamer's clip, and the joke is the sound. To many adults, and to many women of any age, the word underneath is the whole story. Both groups are reacting to something real, which is why arguments about whether huzz is offensive tend to go in circles. If you're the one choosing whether to use it, the safer assumption is that some readers will hear the insult.

## The other -uzz words

Huzz kicked off a pattern. Merriam-Webster lists bruzz, chuzz and gruzz alongside it as rhyming -uzz words, each naming a different group of people. Know Your Meme's explainer from November 2024 calls huzz the original and lists more:

| Word | What it means | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Huzz | A crude word for women | The original, per Know Your Meme |
| Bruzz | Bros, close male friends | Know Your Meme notes an Urban Dictionary entry from 2008 |
| Gruzz | Grandma | A joke word |
| Chuzz | Women considered unattractive | Blends chopped with huzz, so it's crude too |
| Fuzz | Freshmen | A joke word |
| Tuzz, muzz, duzz | Teacher, mom, dad | Joke words |

Most of the later -uzz words are harmless nonsense. The Daily Dot ties the trend to Gen Z's habit of stacking online slang, citing the phrase [skibidi](/glossary/skibidi) Ohio rizz as the same instinct. Know Your Meme describes the stacking of them as slang overload, piling similar words into one post to parody chronically online behavior. Huzz and chuzz are the exceptions, because their roots are insults. Chuzz combines [chopped](/glossary/chopped), slang for ugly, with huzz.

## How people use huzz on social media

Know Your Meme says huzz is mostly used in catchphrases, like anything for the huzz and in front of the huzz. On [TikTok](/platform/tiktok), it shows up in skits and animations about guys showing off, in storytime captions, and in comments. On [X](/platform/twitter) it's common in jokes about dating plans falling through. On Twitch and YouTube, where it started, it lives in chat and in stream clips.

A lot of the humor targets the guys, not the women. Videos about someone doing something ridiculous for the huzz are usually mocking how hard he's trying, the same territory as jokes about [rizz](/glossary/rizz) and [simps](/glossary/simp). Merriam-Webster's examples include posts about trying to impress the huzz and gaining [aura](/glossary/aura) for the huzz.

- Comment on a skit: "he really learned the whole dance for the huzz"
- Caption on a gym video: "day 40 of training for the huzz"
- Reply to a friend's outfit: "dressed up like that in front of the huzz?"
- Post about canceled plans: "the huzz said maybe next weekend, again"
- Slang-overload joke: "bruzz brought gruzz to impress the huzz"

> These examples show how the word is used so you can recognize it. They aren't suggestions to use it.

## What to do if you hear huzz

Your response depends on who you are and who said it. A parent hearing it from a 13-year-old is in a different spot from a woman who just got called it by a stranger.

**Where did you hear huzz?**
- From your kid or a student → Ask what they think it means, then explain what it stands for. Many don't know.
- Aimed at you by a stranger → It's disrespectful. Ignore it, or block if it keeps up.
- In a friend's joke video → It's meme talk. You can laugh, scroll or say you don't love the word.
- From a coworker or brand account → It doesn't belong there. Raise it if you're comfortable.

Parents and teachers often get further by asking than by banning. Many kids repeat huzz as a funny noise from videos without knowing the word underneath. Explaining what it stands for, calmly, tends to work better than a reaction they can turn into another joke. It also helps to separate the sound from the meaning: the -uzz joke itself is fine, and words like bruzz and gruzz are harmless, so the conversation can be about one word rather than about all of their slang.

## When not to use it

Don't use huzz in brand posts, professional profiles, captions for a general audience or anywhere women might reasonably read it as a dig at them. It's a respelled insult, and plenty of people will take it as one. Even ironic uses on a company account will strike many followers as a brand calling women h*es.

If you want the joke without the word, the harmless -uzz words, like bruzz, gruzz or tuzz, carry the same slang-overload humor. And if you need a word for a group of women, women works fine. If a creator you work with uses huzz in a draft for your account, it's reasonable to ask them to swap it out, the same as you would any other insult.
