Instagram Notes are short status updates of up to 60 characters that appear at the top of the Instagram inbox and above your profile picture. A note lasts up to 24 hours and is shown only to followers you follow back or to your Close Friends.

## What Instagram Notes are

A note is a tiny post that floats above your profile picture. Instagram's help center describes Notes as a space to share updates and thoughts as short posts with certain people. You get one note at a time, it can hold up to 60 characters, and it appears in two places: at the top of the inbox in Instagram messaging, and above your profile picture on your profile.

Think of it as a status line rather than a post. It doesn't go in your grid, it doesn't show in anyone's feed, and nobody gets a full-screen view of it the way they would a story. People see it when they open their messages or visit your profile. That makes notes good for small, passing things: what you're listening to, a question for friends, where you'll be tonight.

- 60: characters per note
- 24 hours: the longest a note stays visible
- 1: note you can share at a time
- 30 days: a deleted note waits in Recently Deleted

## When Instagram added Notes

Instagram announced Notes on its blog on December 13, 2022, in a post about new ways to connect with friends. The launch version was simple: up to 60 characters of text and emoji, shared with followers you follow back or with your Close Friends list, shown at the top of their inbox for 24 hours, with replies arriving as DMs. Instagram said people in testing liked having a lightweight way to say what was on their mind and start conversations.

The core rules haven't changed since then, but Instagram has added things you can attach. Its current help page lists music, GIFs, a location and mentions, and a separate page covers notes that show what you're playing on Spotify.

## How long Instagram Notes last

A note stays visible for up to 24 hours. After that it disappears from your inbox and profile on its own. You can end it sooner by tapping it and choosing Delete note, or replace it by leaving a new note, since a new one always replaces the current one.

Deleting a note doesn't erase it on the spot. Instagram's page on deleted content lists notes among the things that move to Recently Deleted, where they stay for 30 days before automatic deletion unless you restore or permanently delete them first. Instagram also says a reported note can still be reviewed after the 24 hours are up, so the short life of a note isn't a loophole in its Community Standards.

> Spotify notes work a little differently. While you're playing music, the note updates in real time to show the current song, for up to 24 hours or until 30 minutes after you stop playing. Instagram says this feature isn't available to everyone.

## Who can see your note

When you post a note you choose one of two audiences: Followers you follow back, or Close friends. The first is your [mutuals](/glossary/mutuals), people who follow you and whom you follow in return. Someone who follows you but whom you don't follow back won't see it. The second is your [Close Friends](/glossary/close-friends) list, with one catch Instagram spells out: a Close friends note is seen by people on that list who also follow you back.

**Will this person see my note?**
- You follow each other and you picked Followers you follow back → Yes. It shows at the top of their inbox and on your profile.
- They follow you, but you don't follow them → No. Notes only go to followers you follow back.
- You picked Close friends and they're on the list → Yes, as long as they follow you back.
- You follow them, but they don't follow you → No. They aren't a follower, so neither audience includes them.

Likes and replies are private too. Only you can see who liked or replied to your note. Tapping your own note shows the list of likes, and you can start a chat with anyone on it. A reply starts a one-to-one conversation in your inbox, exactly like a [DM](/glossary/dm), and nobody else sees it. Anyone who can see your note can also see a location if you add one, so think twice before tagging where you are.

## How to post a note on Instagram

Notes work from the inbox or from your profile. These are the iPhone steps from Instagram's help center; on a computer the flow is the same, starting from Messages on the left and choosing Your note.

1. Tap Messages at the bottom to open your inbox
2. Tap your profile picture at the top of the inbox
3. Type a note of up to 60 characters
4. Add music, a GIF, a location or a mention if you like
5. Choose Followers you follow back or Close friends
6. Tap Share

*From your profile, tap your profile picture instead and follow the same steps.*

To change a note, tap it and pick Leave a new note. To remove it, tap it and pick Delete note. One quirk worth knowing: Instagram says notes with GIFs or videos won't appear on your profile, only in the inbox. Notes also aren't available on Meta Quest headsets.

## What you can add to a note

- Music: tap Add music to attach a song. Instagram says music notes aren't available in every country.
- Spotify: link Spotify and your note can show what you're playing live, where the feature is offered.
- A GIF: tap Add GIF. GIF notes stay in the inbox and don't show on your profile.
- A location: tap Add location to add where you are. Anyone who can see the note can see it, and location services must be on.
- A mention: tag someone in your note, if their settings allow mentions.

Sixty characters is short, roughly one line. If you're used to writing a full [caption](/glossary/caption), count before you type. An [Instagram caption counter](/tools/instagram-caption-character-counter) will tell you how much room an idea needs, though the note box itself stops you at the limit.

## How to reply to or like a note

Tap someone's note at the top of your inbox or on their profile. Tap Like, or double-tap the note, to like it; only the person who posted it sees your like. To reply, tap Send message or Reply and type. Your reply goes as a direct message and starts a private conversation that lives in both inboxes. If a note breaks the rules, you can report it from the same screen.

Because a reply is a DM, keep it to what you'd say in a private message. A note asking for a restaurant tip is an open invitation. A note that just says a song title is a mood, and a reply is optional.

## How people use Instagram Notes

Notes lean casual. Friends use them for questions, plans and in-jokes. Creators use them for a quick heads-up to their mutuals without making a full story. A few illustrative notes:

- "Need a good thriller for this weekend, go."
- "Anyone at the game tonight?"
- "New video drops at 6, link in bio."
- "Day 3 of no caffeine. Send help."
- "Who's free for coffee Saturday?"
- "Back from the trip, photo dump soon."

A few habits make notes work better. Lead with the point, because the bubble above a profile picture is small and people glance at it in passing. Ask a question when you want replies, since every answer arrives as a private chat you can pick up later. Change the note when it goes stale; a plan for Friday reads oddly on Saturday morning. And keep anything you'd regret out of it, from your exact location to a complaint about a friend who can see it. Sixty characters is easy to fire off without thinking.

If you run a brand account, remember who sees a note: only followers you follow back. A brand account that follows few people back may reach almost nobody with a note. For announcements to a large audience, a story, a feed post or an Instagram [broadcast channel](/glossary/broadcast-channel) fits better. Our guide to [posts, stories and Reels](/blog/instagram-post-vs-story-vs-reel) covers when each one makes sense.

## Notes vs stories vs community notes

**Notes**
- Up to 60 characters
- Top of inbox and above profile picture
- Followers you follow back or Close friends
- Up to 24 hours

**Stories**
- Full-screen photos and videos
- Story tray at the top of feed
- Your followers, or Close Friends only
- 24 hours, or forever in a highlight

**Community notes**
- Context added to a post
- Written by approved contributors
- Shown when contributors with different views agree
- Not something you post about yourself

*Community notes share the name but are a separate fact-checking feature.*

The name causes some confusion. Community notes, which Instagram also uses, are context that approved contributors attach to posts that might be misleading. Instagram's help center says a community note appears when enough contributors with different views agree it's helpful, and that a note on your post won't change who can see it. That has nothing to do with the status line above your profile picture. Stories you want to keep can be saved as [highlights](/glossary/instagram-highlights); notes can't.

## Questions

### Can everyone see my Instagram note?

No. Instagram only shows notes to followers you follow back, or to Close Friends who follow you back if you choose that audience.

### Does Instagram tell you who saw your note?

Instagram shows you who liked or replied to your note, and only you can see that list. Its help pages don't describe a list of everyone who viewed it.

### Do Instagram Notes notify people?

Instagram's help pages don't describe a notification for new notes. People see your note when they open their inbox or visit your profile.

### Why can't I see the Notes option?

Notes aren't available on Meta Quest devices, and some extras such as music or Spotify notes aren't offered in every country. Updating the app is the usual first step if the option is missing.

### Can I see an old note after it expires?

A note leaves your inbox and profile after 24 hours. If you deleted it yourself, it sits in Recently Deleted for 30 days, where you can restore it.

### Is replying to a note the same as sending a DM?

Yes. Instagram sends your reply as a direct message, and it starts a private conversation between you and the person who posted the note.
