Link in bio means the link mentioned in a post is on the account's profile page, in the website or links section near the bio, rather than in the post itself. To find it, tap the account's name or profile picture and look under their bio.

## What link in bio means

When a post says "link in bio," the poster is telling you where to find the website they're talking about: on their profile. Tap their name or profile picture, look at the short description at the top, the [bio](/glossary/bio), and the link sits just below it. Tap it and you're taken to the shop, article, video, sign-up form or whatever the post was promoting.

It's an instruction, not slang with a hidden meaning, the social media version of "details on our website." You'll see it written several ways: link in bio, link in my bio, link in profile, or with a pointing emoji. It shows up most on Instagram, but people use it on any network where the profile has a website field that's easier to tap than anything in a post.

"Link in bio" is also a noun now. People talk about their link in bio as the single page they keep linked from every profile, and "link-in-bio tools" are services that build that page. More on those below.

## Where link in bio comes from

The origin isn't well documented: no first use is recorded, and Merriam-Webster doesn't list the phrase. What's clear is the setup that made it necessary. Instagram's help center describes the Links section of your profile, reached through Edit profile, as the place to add websites, and says anyone, on or off Instagram, can see them. Posts became the place to talk about something and the profile became the place to click, so creators started pointing people from one to the other.

When a profile has room for only one website, people need a way to fit many destinations behind one URL, which is how link-in-bio pages became their own category. Instagram now allows up to 5 links on a profile, other networks set their own limits, and the phrase has stuck either way.

## How many links each network allows in a bio

Here's what each network's own help center says about links on your profile. Where a help page doesn't give a number, we say so rather than guess.

| Network | Where the link goes | How many | What the help page says |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Instagram | Edit profile, then Links | Up to 5 | Anyone, on or off Instagram, can see your websites. You can reorder them. |
| YouTube | YouTube Studio, Customization, Profile, Links | Up to 14 | The first link shows near the Subscribe button; the rest show when people click to see more. |
| LinkedIn | Contact info in your introduction section | Up to 3 | Each website gets a Website type from a dropdown. |
| X | Edit profile, Website field | One website field | X lists Website alongside your name, bio and location. |
| Threads | Edit profile, Link | Not stated | Threads also has a separate Podcast link option. |

- 5: links on an Instagram profile
- 14: links on a YouTube channel
- 3: websites in LinkedIn Contact info

Even with five links available, the first one does most of the work, since it's the one people see without tapping again. On YouTube, Google's help page says the first link is shown prominently near the Subscribe button. On Instagram, if you link your Facebook profile, Instagram says that link becomes the first website people see.

## How to add a link to your Instagram bio

1. Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right
2. Tap Edit profile
3. Tap Links
4. Tap Add external link and paste the URL
5. Tap Done, then Back

To change the order, go back to Edit profile, tap Links, tap Options, then Reorder links, and drag them into place. To remove one, tap it and choose Remove link. Put the link your current posts point to at the top, so a visitor who arrives from "link in bio" sees it first.

### Adding links on YouTube and LinkedIn

On YouTube, links live on your channel rather than in a bio box. Google's steps: sign in to YouTube Studio, choose Customization, then Profile, and under Links click Add link, enter a title and URL, then click Publish. Links have to follow YouTube's external links policy. On LinkedIn, go to your profile, click Contact info in your introduction section, click the Edit icon, then Add website, paste the URL and pick a Website type before saving.

### Write the bio around the link

The words above the link decide whether anyone taps it. Instagram gives you up to 150 characters of bio and X gives you 160, so there's room for one line about who you are and one about what the link is. "New album out now" or "Weekly recipes, newest first" tells a visitor what's waiting. Our [Instagram bio generator](/tools/instagram-bio-generator) can draft options, and the [Instagram bio character counter](/tools/instagram-bio-character-counter) and [X bio character counter](/tools/x-bio-character-counter) check the length before you save.

## What link-in-bio pages are

A link-in-bio page is a simple web page that lists several links, built so you can put one URL in your profile and send people to many places from it. Musicians list streaming services, shops list collections, creators list their latest video, newsletter and merch. Many services offer these pages, and some people build their own on their website.

Whether you need one depends on the network. On Instagram, five links cover a lot. On X, with one website field, a hub page is the only way to offer more than one destination. Either way, add tracking so you know what people click. Our free [UTM builder](/tools/utm-builder) tags each link so your analytics show which profile and which post sent the visit.

**Where should this link go?**
- It's your main site or shop, always relevant → Put it first in your profile links.
- It's for one post or a short campaign → Rotate it to the top of your links while the post is fresh, or use a link sticker in a story.
- You have more destinations than the network allows → Use a link-in-bio page and keep its URL in your profile.
- One person asked for it → Just send it in a DM.

## Other ways to share a link

The profile isn't the only clickable spot. On Instagram, a link sticker in a story sends anyone who taps it to the linked website; Instagram's help center says these stickers work in organic stories, while story ads use a call-to-action sticker instead. Saving that story to a [highlight](/glossary/instagram-highlights) keeps the link on your profile after the story expires. For one person, a [DM](/glossary/dm) with the link is the fastest route.

Where a network lets you paste a working link into the post itself, that's clearer than sending people on a detour through your profile. Write "link in bio" when the network or format makes a direct link awkward, not out of habit.

## How people use link in bio

- "New episode is live, link in bio."
- "Tickets go on sale Friday at 10, link in my bio."
- "Full recipe at the link in bio, it's the first one."
- "Restocked the blue mugs. Shop link in bio."
- "Wrote about the whole trip, link in profile."
- "It says link in bio but the link goes to a page with ten more links, which one?"

The phrase usually sits at the end of a [caption](/glossary/caption), after the hook, so readers know what to do once they're interested. Creators who post the same update across several channels sometimes point to a [broadcast channel](/glossary/broadcast-channel) or a newsletter from the same profile link, so one URL keeps serving every post.

## When link in bio backfires

**Before you write link in bio**
- [ ] The link is actually in your profile, and it works
- [ ] It's the first link, or you say which one to tap
- [ ] The page loads quickly on a phone
- [ ] You'll swap it when the next post needs the spot
- [ ] The network doesn't let you put the link in the post itself

The most common failure is a post that says "link in bio" weeks after the link was replaced. Old posts keep getting views, so if you rotate links, say what the link is for ("recipe link in bio") rather than assuming it's still there. The same goes for scheduled posts: the link has to be on your profile when each post goes live, which may be days after you wrote the caption, so put a reminder next to anything you queue. And keep your [handle](/glossary/handle) and bio clear about who you are, because people who tap through to find a link are also deciding whether to follow.

## Questions

### Is a link in bio the same as a link-in-bio page?

Not quite. Link in bio means whatever link sits on the profile. A link-in-bio page is one specific kind of link: a page that lists several more links.

### How many links can you have in an Instagram bio?

Up to 5, according to Instagram's help center. You add them under Edit profile, then Links, and you can reorder them.

### Why do people say link in bio instead of posting the link?

The profile is the place each network gives you for a website, so it's the reliable spot to put a link people can tap. On networks that allow links in posts, it's often clearer to paste the link directly.

### Where is the link in someone's bio?

Open their profile by tapping their name or picture. The link appears under the bio text, near the top of the profile.

### How many links can you add to a YouTube channel?

Google's YouTube help page says you can showcase up to 14 links on your channel, with the first one shown near the Subscribe button.

### Can you add more than one link on X?

X's profile has a single Website field. To offer several destinations, link a page that lists them.
