Flair on Reddit is a small label created by a community's moderators. Post flair tags a post with a category, such as Question or Discussion, and user flair appears next to your username in that community. Some communities won't accept a post without flair.

## What flair means on Reddit

On [Reddit](/platform/reddit), flair is a tagging system that each community can turn on for itself. It comes in two kinds. Post flair is a label on a post that says what kind of post it is or what it's about. User flair is a label next to a member's username, shown only inside that community. Reddit's help center describes both as a visual flag: one on the content, the other on the person.

Flair belongs to the community, not to Reddit as a whole. The mods of each [subreddit](/glossary/subreddit) decide whether to use it, write the labels, pick the colors and choose whether members can apply flair themselves. Reddit lets a community create up to 350 custom templates each for post flair and user flair, so one community might offer three simple tags while another runs dozens.

**Post flair**
- A label on a post
- Sorts posts by type or subtopic
- Tap it to see every post with that flair
- Some communities require it to post

**User flair**
- A label next to your username
- Shows a role, expertise or a fun detail
- Only appears in that one community
- You can choose whether it shows

## How post flair works

Post flair is how a busy community stays organized. Reddit says mods use it to sort posts by content type, to mark posts about a particular subtopic, and even to tag a post with the reason it was removed. Clicking a post flair in a listing opens a search page showing every post with that same flair, so a flair like Guide or Meme doubles as a filter.

Some communities go further. In the Reddit app, mods can turn on a setting that puts a horizontal flair menu below the community info, letting members filter the feed by flair. Reddit says that menu is sorted by the most-used flair, with the posts inside each one sorted by new.

The setting that matters most to posters is the requirement. In a community's settings, mods can switch on Require post flair, and Reddit's help center says posts without flair then can't be submitted at all, as long as the community has flair set up. That's why you'll sometimes write a post, press Post and get stopped: the community wants you to pick a label first.

Not every flair is yours to choose. Mods can mark a template as mod-only, for labels such as a removal reason that members shouldn't apply themselves. Reddit says members can't edit mod-only flair even when it's on their own post, though in communities where members assign their own flair, they can remove a mod-only one.

## How to add flair to your post

Reddit's posting guide tells you to check a community's rules before you post, and to add any tags or flair the post needs before you press Post. In practice, that looks like this.

1. **Read the community's rules**: On reddit.com they're in the right-hand sidebar. In the app, tap See more under the description, then the About tab. Look for any mention of required flair.
2. **Start your post in that community**: Tap Create, or use the Create a post button on the community page, so the right community is already selected.
3. **Choose a flair**: If the community uses flair, pick the label that fits your post from its list. Choose the closest honest match rather than the one you think gets more views.
4. **Post, then check**: If the post won't submit, flair is the first thing to check. If it posts but disappears, look at its flair and your inbox for a removal reason.

If you schedule Reddit posts, flair is easy to forget because you aren't looking at the community when the post goes out. PostMesh shows each community's flairs when you write a Reddit post and checks the community's rules, such as required flair and allowed post types, before it publishes, so a missing flair is caught while you can still fix it. The [Reddit title counter](/tools/reddit-title-counter) is handy for the other part of the post people get wrong, the title, which can't be edited after you submit.

## How user flair works

User flair is the icon or text next to your name inside one community. Reddit says mods use it to distinguish trusted or verified members, highlight specialized knowledge or roles, or add a playful touch that suits the community. A cooking community might let you show your home country; a medical community might reserve a flair for verified professionals, which mods grant by hand.

Setting your own user flair depends on whether the community allows it. If it does, Reddit's help center gives these routes. If you don't see the option, only the mods can set flair for you, so message them.

1. **On reddit.com**: On the community page, find USER FLAIR on the right-hand side and click the edit icon.
2. **In the iOS or Android app**: Tap the overflow menu in the upper right of the community page, choose Change user flair, select a flair and tap APPLY.
3. **On old Reddit**: Look under the reader count for Show my flair on this subreddit and click edit next to it.

If the app says No user flair assigned, the community hasn't set user flair up. Reddit also says members can choose whether their flair appears in a community, and some communities use their Community Guide, a welcome panel for new members, to prompt you to pick one when you join. Reddit is also removing separate color settings for user flair, which now uses the community's own background and text colors so it's easier to read.

## Where the word flair comes from

Flair is an old word with a new job. Merriam-Webster defines it as a natural talent, as in a flair for color, or a distinctive stylish quality, and dates its first known use in English to 1881. Its history is stranger than that: Merriam-Webster notes that the Middle English flayre meant an odor, from an Old French verb meaning to give off a smell.

How the word came to mean a label on Reddit isn't well documented. None of the dictionaries or Reddit help pages we checked explains why Reddit chose it, so we won't guess. What Reddit's own pages make clear is how it's used now: as the standard name for both post labels and username labels across the site.

## How people talk about flair

Flair works as a noun and a verb on Reddit. You add a flair, and you flair a post. Mods and regulars use it constantly, often in pinned posts and removal messages.

- Mod comment: "Please flair your post as Question or Discussion so it isn't removed"
- Poster asking for help: "Which flair should I use for a build review?"
- Member noticing a credential: "Their flair says verified electrician, so I'd trust that answer"
- Thread update: "Changed the flair to Solved, thanks everyone"
- Suggestion to the mods: "Could we get a Spoilers flair for the new season?"
- Newcomer confused: "My post keeps getting blocked, turns out I forgot the flair"

> Don't confuse flair with flare. Merriam-Webster defines flare as a blaze of light used to signal, a sudden outburst, or a spreading outward, which is where flares, the pants, get their name. On Reddit it's always flair, and Merriam-Webster links its flair entry to an article on telling the two apart.

## Flair compared with other labels on Reddit

| Label | Who sets it | What it does |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Post flair | Mods create it, members or mods apply it | Categorizes a post and can be required to post |
| User flair | Mods create it, members or mods apply it | Shows a role, expertise or detail next to a username in one community |
| OP marker | Reddit, automatically | Shows OP or a mic icon next to the post's author in comments |
| MOD marker | Reddit, when a mod distinguishes a comment | Shows MOD or a shield icon next to a moderator |
| NSFW and spoiler tags | The poster, when creating a post | Warn readers before they open mature content or spoilers |
| Brand Affiliate tag | The poster | Marks a post or comment as incentivized or commercial |

The automatic markers aren't flair, even though they sit in the same spot. The [OP](/glossary/op) label simply tells you who made the post, and a MOD label means a moderator is speaking officially. Flair is the only label a community designs for itself. Flair also doesn't change how a post is voted on: [upvotes](/glossary/upvote) still decide where it lands in Hot and Top, while flair decides which filter it appears under.

**Before posting in a community that uses flair**
- [ ] Read the rules for a flair requirement
- [ ] Check which flairs exist and what each one is for
- [ ] Pick the flair that honestly matches the post
- [ ] Make sure the post type is allowed there
- [ ] Write a clear title, since titles can't be edited later
- [ ] Ask the mods if no flair fits

Because tapping a flair lists every post that carries it, communities that run recurring events, from weekly threads to an [AMA](/glossary/ama), can use flair to keep them easy to find. Communities with strict entry rules may also pair a flair requirement with a karma threshold, which our guide to [Reddit karma requirements](/blog/reddit-karma-requirements) explains.

## Questions

### What does flair mean on a Reddit post?

It's a label the community's mods created to categorize posts, such as Question, News or Solved. Tapping it shows every post in that community with the same flair.

### Why can't I post without flair?

The community has turned on its Require post flair setting. Reddit blocks posts without flair in those communities until you pick one.

### How do I change my user flair?

On reddit.com, click the edit icon next to USER FLAIR on the community page. In the app, open the community's overflow menu and choose Change user flair. If neither appears, ask the mods.

### Does user flair show everywhere on Reddit?

No. User flair is set per community and only appears next to your name inside that community.

### Who decides what flairs a subreddit has?

Its moderators. They create the templates, up to 350 each for post and user flair, and choose whether members can apply them.

### Is it flair or flare on Reddit?

Flair. Flare means a signal light, a sudden outburst or a spreading outward, and it isn't the Reddit term.
