SMH stands for Shaking my head. SMH stands for shaking my head. People type it to show disappointment, disapproval or disbelief, the way you'd slowly shake your head at something in person. SMDH, shaking my damn head, is a stronger version.

## What SMH means

SMH is short for shaking my head. It describes a gesture, not a sentence. When someone types smh, they're asking you to picture them slowly shaking their head at whatever they just read, saw or heard. Merriam-Webster defines it as an expression of disapproval, dismay or disbelief, and labels it informal.

The feeling behind it ranges from mild to sharp. A friend who writes smh under a photo of your burnt toast is teasing. Someone who writes it under a news story is usually frustrated. Merriam-Webster's slang page says it can carry "a sense of bemused incredulity" as easily as real annoyance. Context tells you which one you're getting.

You'll occasionally see two other readings. Merriam-Webster says smh is sometimes glossed as scratching my head, which signals confusion rather than disapproval. An archived Dictionary.com entry adds so much hate, used for disdain. Both are rare. If you see smh with no other clue, read it as shaking my head.

> SMH is also the common abbreviation for The Sydney Morning Herald, the Australian newspaper. In a link, a headline or a news credit, that's almost always what it means.

## Where SMH comes from

SMH is older than most people assume. The Oxford English Dictionary, which added the interjection in 2016, has its earliest evidence from 1994, in a document titled FAQ: Symbols & Abbrev. Merriam-Webster also points to 1994: its slang page cites a list posted to the news.newusers.questions newsgroup on July 15, 1994, where SMH sits between SLG (silly little grin) and SOSO (same old, same old). That was the era of Usenet newsgroups, long before social media.

Merriam-Webster also points out what makes smh different from shorthand like brb or FWIW. Like LOL, it gives the reader a gesture to picture instead of a phrase to read. That's part of why it lasted. It's quicker than describing your reaction, and everyone knows what a head shake looks like.

The term picked up a wider audience in the 2000s. Know Your Meme records an Urban Dictionary definition submitted on February 14, 2004, and a definition for smdh, shaking my damn head, on June 22, 2007. The archived Dictionary.com entry notes that smh is used especially often in Black internet communities, and that it's now familiar enough that some people say it out loud, the way they might say LOL or OMG.

## How people use SMH on social media

SMH works almost anywhere people react to things. It usually goes at the start or end of a message, sometimes alone. A few patterns by network:

- On X and Threads, smh often closes a reply or quote post, as a one-word verdict. It's a favorite in [ratio](/glossary/ratio) fights and replies to bad takes.
- On TikTok and Instagram, it shows up in comments under videos of fails, bad decisions and relatable chaos, often with a laughing emoji to soften it.
- In group chats and DMs, smh is mostly playful. It's how friends call each other out for a bad joke or a late reply.
- On Reddit, it's common in casual subreddits, but longer threads tend to spell out the reaction instead.
- On LinkedIn, you'll rarely see it. People there usually write out what they mean.

Some example messages, written for this page:

- You left the oat milk out overnight again smh
- smh I really bought tickets for the wrong date
- They raised the price and made the portions smaller. smh
- Three alarms and I still slept through all of them smh
- Not my team blowing a 20 point lead. smdh
- smh at myself for replying all to that email

Notice the last two. SMH is often aimed at yourself, which makes it lighter. The archived Dictionary.com entry also mentions head-shake GIFs captioned smh, which are easy to find on GIF keyboards and work as a reply on their own.

## How to reply to SMH

How you answer depends on who the head shake is aimed at. Most of the time, smh is a reaction to a shared situation, and it doesn't need a reply at all. A like or a matching emoji is enough.

**Who is the SMH aimed at?**
- At themselves → Commiserate or laugh with them: "we've all done it" or "at least you noticed".
- At something you both saw → Agree and add to it: "right, it's unreal" or "ikr". No deeper reply needed.
- At you, as a joke → Own it with humor: "in my defense..." or a sheepish emoji.
- At you, seriously → Ask what went wrong, then answer the actual problem in plain words.

*A head shake aimed at you is the only case that usually needs a real answer.*

If you're unsure, ask. "Wait, smh at me or at them?" is a perfectly normal reply in a chat. For more ways to agree in two or three letters, see [IKR](/glossary/ikr) and [FR](/glossary/fr).

One thing to avoid: answering a serious smh with another smh. If a coworker or client shakes their head at something you did, a matching head shake reads as dismissive. Treat it as feedback instead. A plain "What went wrong? I'll fix it" ends the exchange faster than any abbreviation, and it shows you took the reaction seriously rather than bouncing it back.

## When not to use SMH

SMH is not rude in itself, but it is judgmental. It tells someone you disapprove without telling them why. That's fine among friends. It lands badly in a few places.

- Replying to a customer. A brand account writing smh under a complaint reads as mocking, even if you meant sympathy.
- Work email and Slack messages to people senior to you, or anyone you don't know well.
- Under someone's personal news, such as a lost job or a breakup, where it can look like you're judging them rather than the situation.
- Anywhere your audience may not know the abbreviation. Older readers and people reading in a second language may not, and screen readers will read it as letters.

**SMH is usually fine when**
- [ ] You're talking to friends or followers who use it too
- [ ] The head shake is at a situation, not a person
- [ ] Your tone is clearly light, or aimed at yourself
- [ ] You'd say the same thing out loud with a sigh
- [ ] It's a personal account, not a brand replying to a customer

If you run a brand account and want to show the same feeling, write a short sentence instead. "That's not the experience we want you to have" says what smh can't. A tool like the [AI comment generator](/tools/ai-comment-generator) can help you draft replies that keep a human tone without the shorthand.

## SMH vs SMDH, SMFH and other look-alikes

SMH has a family of stronger versions. Each extra letter adds a swear word for emphasis. The archived Dictionary.com entry lists smdh as the most common, then smfh and smmfh.

| Term | Stands for | Strength | Safe for work? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| SMH | Shaking my head | Mild to medium | Mostly, in casual settings |
| SMDH | Shaking my damn head | Stronger | Not in formal settings |
| SMFH | Shaking my f*cking head | Strong, explicit | No |
| SMMFH | Shaking my motherf*cking head | Very strong, explicit | No |
| Facepalm (gesture or emoji) | A hand pressed to the face | Similar feeling | Mostly |

**SMH**
- Disappointment or disbelief
- Works in most casual chats
- Can be playful or self-aimed

**SMDH**
- Same feeling, turned up
- Adds a mild swear
- Best kept to friends

**SMFH**
- Same feeling, angrier
- Contains the f-word
- Never on brand or work accounts

*The extra letters add emphasis, and swearing, not a new meaning.*

SMH also often travels with other reactions. LOL smh means you find something funny and silly at once. You'll see it next to [LMAO](/glossary/lmao) in comment sections and before [NGL](/glossary/ngl) when someone is about to admit something. It is not the same as [IMO](/glossary/imo), which offers an opinion. SMH just reacts.

## Capitals, punctuation and where it goes

Merriam-Webster lists both smh and SMH. Lowercase reads softer and more casual, which is why it's more common in texts. All caps can read as louder, especially when the rest of the message is lowercase. Neither changes the meaning.

Know Your Meme's guide notes that smh usually sits at the beginning or end of a sentence, and sometimes in the middle as a kind of pause. You can also use it as part of a sentence, as in "I'm smh at this", which the archived Dictionary.com entry mentions. Punctuation is optional. People rarely put a period after it, and adding one can make it read colder.

SMH is three characters, so it rarely matters for length, but it's one of the shortcuts that help a reply fit on X. The [social media character limits](/blog/social-media-character-limits) guide lists every network's caps if you're trimming a post to fit.

## Questions

### Is SMH rude?

Not usually. It shows disapproval, so aiming it at a person can sting, but among friends it's mostly playful or self-directed.

### What does SMH mean from a girl or a guy?

The same thing for anyone: shaking my head. From a crush, it's usually teasing, like a fond eye roll at something silly you said.

### What is the difference between SMH and SMDH?

SMDH means shaking my damn head. It's the same reaction with a mild swear added for emphasis, so it reads as more exasperated.

### What does SMH LOL mean?

It means something is both funny and ridiculous. The sender is laughing and shaking their head at once, often at their own mistake.

### Is SMH an acronym or an initialism?

It's an initialism. People say the letters, S-M-H, rather than pronouncing it as one word.

### How old is SMH?

Older than social media. The Oxford English Dictionary's earliest evidence is from 1994, from the Usenet newsgroup era.
