A stitch on TikTok is a video that opens with a short clip from another creator's video and then cuts to your own recording. People use it to answer, react to or continue someone else's video, and each creator decides whether their videos can be stitched.

## What stitch means on TikTok

Stitch is a [TikTok](/platform/tiktok) feature that joins part of someone else's video to the front of yours. TikTok's help center says it lets you combine a video on TikTok with one you're creating, using a part of the other person's video as part of your own. The viewer sees the original clip first, then your response.

That order is what makes stitches useful. The clip sets up the question, the claim or the cliffhanger, and your part delivers the answer, the correction or the next chapter. When TikTok launched the feature, it described Stitch as a way to reinterpret and add to another user's content, building on their stories, tutorials, recipes and math lessons.

Like a duet, a stitch is its own post. TikTok says it appears only on the profile of the person who recorded it, while the original stays on its creator's profile. The word works as a noun and a verb: you can post a stitch, or stitch a video. "Stitch this" in a caption invites people to answer.

## Where Stitch comes from

Stitch is a newer feature than Duet. TikTok's newsroom announced it on September 3, 2020, as a new editing tool for clipping and adding scenes from another user's video into your own. [Know Your Meme](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/sites/tiktok-duets) notes that TikTok's official account posted an explainer video for Stitch a day earlier, on September 2, 2020.

The launch post also set two rules that still shape how stitches work. You could select up to five seconds from the original video, and every stitch credits the original creator in its caption, with a link straight back to the clipped video. TikTok's current help page no longer states a clip length. It says you choose the part of the video you want and then select a maximum length for your own recording.

## How to stitch a video on TikTok

You can only stitch a video whose creator allows it, and TikTok notes that not every video has Stitch turned on. When it's available, TikTok's help center lays out these steps.

1. **Open the video**: In the TikTok app, find the video you want to stitch and tap the Share button on the side.
2. **Tap Stitch and pick the clip**: Choose the part of the video you want to use, then tap Next.
3. **Choose your length**: Select a maximum length for your video.
4. **Record**: Tap Record to create your part of the stitch, then tap the Continue checkmark.
5. **Edit**: Add a filter, voice effect, text, stickers or effects, or open the advanced editing tools.
6. **Add the details**: Tap Next to add a description and hashtags, tag people, add a location or link, and check the privacy settings. Or tap Your Story to share it to your Story.
7. **Post or save**: Tap Post to publish, or Drafts to save it. Drafts are visible only to you on your profile.

Pick the clip with care. The few seconds you choose are all your viewers see of the original before you start talking, so they should carry the whole setup: the question being asked, the claim you're answering, the moment you're reacting to. A good stitch makes sense even to someone who has never seen the original. Keep your own part tight too. The [TikTok caption generator](/tools/tiktok-caption-generator) can help with the description.

## Who can stitch your videos

Stitch shares its settings with Duet. TikTok says you need a public account to let others stitch your videos, and then you choose Everyone or Friends, meaning followers you follow back.

1. **For your whole account**: Tap Profile, then the Menu button at the top. Select Settings and privacy, tap Privacy, then Reuse of content. Tap Allow reuse of content from and choose Everyone or Friends.
2. **Before you post**: On the Post screen, tap More options and turn Allow reuse of content on or off.
3. **For a video you already posted**: Open the video, tap More options on the side, tap Privacy settings and turn Allow reuse of content on or off.

> Turning Stitch off also changes who can Duet your posts, make stickers from them and add them to their Story, according to TikTok. It's one shared switch, not separate ones.

To manage stitches that already exist, go to Settings and privacy, Privacy, Reuse of content, then Reuse of content history, or find the same option in your Activity center. Be careful with Remove all posts. TikTok says it permanently deletes your original video along with every duet and stitch made from it, and that you may need to verify your account if there are more than 10. Download the original first if you want to keep it. For one stitch that breaks TikTok's Community Guidelines or your privacy, report it.

## How people use stitches

Stitches are TikTok's answer format. One creator asks "What's a job that sounds fake but pays well?" and other people stitch the question with their answers. A creator makes a claim and an expert stitches it with a correction. Fans stitch a recipe with their attempt, or a strange story with one of their own. The original clip gives the context, so your part can skip the introduction.

- Answering a prompt: "Stitch this with the worst advice you ever got at work"
- Expert reply: "Stitching this because the second tip is a myth, here's why"
- Same experience: "Stitching this because the exact same thing happened to me last week"
- Trying a recipe: "Stitched her five-minute pasta, here's how mine turned out"
- Comment asking for one: "Someone stitch this with the real answer"
- Caption credit style: "#stitch with my favorite plant creator"

Because a stitch opens with someone else's question or prompt, it's a natural way to join a [TikTok challenge](/glossary/tiktok-challenge) built around one. They can reach the [For You page](/glossary/fyp) like any other post, and a clear caption with relevant [hashtags](/glossary/hashtag) helps them find people. Stitches are made in the app, but for your own original videos, our guide on [how to schedule TikTok videos](/blog/how-to-schedule-tiktok-videos) covers the ways to post them at a set time.

## Stitch compared with duet and repost

| Feature | What viewers see | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Stitch | A clip of the original, then your video | Answering, correcting or continuing a video |
| Duet | Your video beside the original, both playing at once | Reacting live, singing along, side-by-side tries |
| Repost | The original video, labeled with your name as a repost | Sharing a video as is with your followers |
| Credit a video | Your own video with the creator mentioned | Giving credit for an idea without using their footage |

**Stitch, duet or repost?**
- You want to answer or build on what they said → Stitch: their clip sets it up, your video follows.
- You want to react or perform alongside them → Duet: both videos play side by side.
- You just want your followers to see it → Repost: it appears in their For You feed labeled as your repost.
- You were inspired but won't use their footage → Credit the creator in your post or a comment.

A [duet](/glossary/duet) keeps the original on screen the whole time, which is better when your reaction only makes sense next to it. A stitch hands the floor to you after a few seconds, which is better when you have more to say than the original did. TikTok says a repost appears in your friends' For You feeds labeled with your profile photo and name, and lives under the repost tab on your profile.

## When not to stitch

Clipping a few seconds gives you a lot of power over how someone else comes across. A sentence pulled out of context can make a person look foolish or cruel when they weren't. If your stitch is a correction, clip enough to be fair to what they actually said. If the original creator is an ordinary person who posted something personal, think twice before putting them in front of your audience for criticism, because stitches can turn into pile-ons.

Brands carry this further. A brand stitching a customer's complaint to rebut it rarely looks good, even when the brand is right. A brand stitching a fan's praise or a creator's question, with an answer that actually helps, usually does. Either way, the original creator can remove stitches made with their video through their settings, so a stitch that feels like an attack may not last.

And when an idea inspired you but you don't need the footage, skip the stitch. Make your own [short-form video](/glossary/short-form-video) and use TikTok's credit feature or a comment mention to thank the person who sparked it. TikTok says the creator is notified either way.

## Questions

### Why can't I stitch a video on TikTok?

The creator may have turned off Allow reuse of content, limited it to friends, or have a private account. TikTok notes that not every video has Stitch turned on.

### How long can a stitch clip be?

When Stitch launched in 2020 you could take up to five seconds of the original. TikTok's current help page says you choose the part you want and a maximum length for your own video, without stating a clip limit.

### Does the creator know you stitched their video?

Your stitch credits them in its caption with a link to their video, and they can see stitches made from their videos in Reuse of content history.

### What is the difference between a stitch and a duet?

A stitch plays a clip of the original first and then your video. A duet shows your video beside the original, with both playing at the same time.

### Where does my stitch appear?

Only on your profile. The original stays on its creator's profile, and your privacy settings decide who can watch, comment on or download your stitch.

### How do I stop people from stitching my videos?

Go to Settings and privacy, Privacy, Reuse of content and limit Allow reuse of content, or turn it off for one video in its privacy settings. This also affects duets.
