WYD stands for What (are) you doing. WYD stands for what (are) you doing. It's a casual text that asks what someone is up to, usually to start a conversation. It can also mean what would you do, in a hypothetical or a teasing challenge.

## What WYD means

WYD is short for what are you doing, typed the way people say it out loud: what you doing. [Merriam-Webster](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/WYD) lists wyd as an informal abbreviation with two expansions, what (are) you doing and what (will or would) you do. Lowercase wyd is the main form. All caps WYD is a variant.

Most of the time it's the first sense, and most of the time it isn't really a request for a report. A wyd text is an opener. It says I'm thinking about you and I'm free to talk, without the effort of a full sentence. The honest answer to "wyd" is often "nothing much", and that's fine. The point was to start talking.

[Dictionary.com](https://www.dictionary.com/culture/acronyms/wyd) describes three jobs for it. It can be a literal question about what you're doing. It can be a greeting that works like what's up. And it can be a rhetorical jab at someone's choices, the way "what are you doing?" sounds when you watch a friend do something unwise. The second meaning, what would you do, shows up in hypotheticals: "wyd if your ex texted you right now?"

**A real question**
- Wants to know your plans
- Often leads to an invite
- Example: wyd tonight?

**A greeting**
- Works like what's up
- Nothing much is a fine answer
- Example: heyy wyd

**A jab or a hypothetical**
- What would you do, or why would you
- Usually rhetorical
- Example: you skipped the finale?? wyd

*Same three letters, three different jobs. The rest of the message tells you which one you got.*

## Where WYD comes from

WYD is a written version of a spoken question, so nobody can point to the first person who typed it. [Know Your Meme](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/wyd) says it has been used in chats, forums and text messages since at least the mid-2000s, and dates the earliest Urban Dictionary definition it found to April 10, 2006.

Twitter helped. Know Your Meme points out that the site's 140-character limit, which lasted until 2017, rewarded short forms like this one. Memes did the rest. Dictionary.com notes that the "WYD after smoking this" joke took off in early 2017, and that another meme built around the hypothetical "what do you do?" also used the abbreviation. Both pushed wyd in front of people who didn't already text that way.

By May 2017, wyd was familiar enough to be complained about. Know Your Meme traces the template "it's always wyd and never [hyd](/glossary/hyd)" to a Facebook group post on May 7, 2017, with the first known tweet four days later. The joke is that people ask what you're doing far more often than how you're doing. In August 2026, Merriam-Webster gave wyd its own dictionary entry.

## How people use WYD on social media

WYD lives in private messages. It's a [DM](/glossary/dm) word: Instagram and Snapchat chats, iMessage, WhatsApp, Discord. It sits at the very start of a conversation, often right after hey, and it often arrives in the evening, when plans are still open.

In public, it turns into a punchline. On [TikTok](/platform/tiktok) and X, "wyd" in a comment usually means the hypothetical or the jab: a reply under a video of someone doing something strange, or a caption that asks what you would do in a situation. On [Instagram](/platform/instagram), you'll see it in captions and story text that invite replies, such as a photo of a rainy window with "wyd tonight". On LinkedIn it barely exists, and in a work chat it reads as personal.

Some example messages, written for this page:

- Opener to a friend: "hey wyd"
- Making plans: "wyd saturday? there's a market downtown"
- Checking in: "wyd, still at work?"
- Hypothetical in a group chat: "wyd if you found $100 in an old jacket"
- Teasing a friend: "you bought another plant?? wyd"
- Story caption: "rainy sunday. wyd"
- Late-night text: "wyd rn"

Dictionary.com lists wud as a less common spelling, with u standing in for you. You'll also see it stretched out ("wyddd") for a softer, more playful tone, or paired with [rn](/glossary/rn) when the question is about this exact moment.

## What WYD means from a crush, a friend or a stranger

From a friend, wyd is usually exactly what it looks like: they're bored, they want to talk, or they're about to invite you somewhere. If plans follow, it was a real question. If small talk follows, it was a greeting.

From a crush, it's a low-risk way to open a chat. Sending wyd costs nothing and doesn't commit to anything, which is part of its appeal. That cuts both ways. A steady stream of bare wyd texts with no follow-up can feel like the sender wants your attention without putting in much of their own.

Timing changes the meaning. Dictionary.com notes the stereotype of wyd as a late-night booty-call text, and Know Your Meme says it often starts conversations with sometimes romantic intent. A wyd at 2 p.m. is a check-in. A wyd at 1 a.m. from someone you barely talk to is often a different question.

From a stranger, especially in message requests, it's an attempt to start a conversation you didn't ask for. You can ignore it. If it keeps happening on Instagram, [restricting the account](/blog/what-does-restrict-mean-on-instagram) is a quieter option than blocking.

## How to reply to WYD

Answer the question, then give the conversation somewhere to go. "Nothing" on its own is a dead end. "Nothing, just got home. You?" keeps it alive. If you'd rather not talk, a short answer with no question back does that politely.

**Who sent the wyd, and do you want to talk?**
- A friend, and yes → Say what you're up to and ask back: "just watching a show, wbu?"
- A crush, and yes → Give a real detail and a hook: "making pasta, badly. what about you?"
- A coworker → Answer plainly and steer to the point: "Finishing the report. What's up?"
- Anyone, and not now → Short and closed: "busy tonight, talk tomorrow"

Some replies for different situations:

- To a friend, keeping it going: "nm just ate, [wbu](/glossary/wbu)"
- To a friend, hinting you're free: "literally nothing, entertain me"
- To a crush, warm: "just thinking about getting dessert. you?"
- To a crush, playful: "waiting for someone interesting to text me. oh hi"
- To a coworker on Slack: "Wrapping up the deck. Need something?"
- To a late-night wyd you don't want: "going to sleep, night"
- To a hypothetical wyd: answer the scenario, then ask theirs: "I'd keep it. you?"

Match the platform, too. In Snapchat and Instagram chats, lowercase and no punctuation feel normal, and "[nm](/glossary/nm) hbu" is a full answer. Over text with an older relative, a full sentence lands better. In a work tool, reply in your normal work voice even if the coworker wrote wyd. If you need to step away mid-chat, [BRB](/glossary/brb) and [TTYL](/glossary/ttyl) are the polite short forms.

## When not to use WYD

WYD is personal and a little lazy by design. That makes it a poor fit anywhere you need to sound clear or professional. Don't open a message to a manager, a client or a customer with it. "Do you have a minute?" says what you mean. Wyd makes the other person guess.

It can also read as presumptuous with people you don't know well. A wyd to someone you met once, especially late at night, can come across as an invitation they didn't ask for. If you want to talk, say why: "hey, I saw your post about the concert, are you going?"

For brand accounts, wyd works in a playful caption or a story prompt aimed at fans. It doesn't work as a reply to a customer. And remember that not everyone knows the abbreviation. People reading in a second language, or older followers, may stall on it.

**WYD is fine when**
- [ ] You know the person and text casually already
- [ ] It's a private chat, not a work tool or a support inbox
- [ ] The time of day won't make it read as a late-night invite
- [ ] You're ready to keep the chat going after they answer
- [ ] On a brand account, it's a playful prompt, not a reply to a complaint

## WYD compared with similar texts

| Text | Stands for | What it asks |
| --- | --- | --- |
| WYD | What (are) you doing | What you're up to right now |
| HYD | How (are) you doing | How you feel, not what you're doing |
| WSG | What's good | A greeting, like what's up |
| WYA | Where (are) you at | Where you are |
| WBU / HBU | What about you / How about you | Turns the question back to the other person |

The difference between WYD and [HYD](/glossary/hyd) is the whole joke behind the "always wyd, never hyd" meme. One asks about your plans. The other asks about you. If you mean to check on someone, send the second one. [WSG](/glossary/wsg) is a pure greeting and expects even less of an answer. [WYA](/glossary/wya) usually means the sender is trying to meet up or find you in a crowd.

One more meaning to know: Dictionary.com notes that WYD can also stand for World Youth Day, a Catholic Church event held every three years. In a news story or a church newsletter, that's almost certainly what it means.

## Questions

### Is WYD flirty?

It can be. From a crush it's a common way to start a chat, and late at night it can carry more intent, but from a friend it's usually just an opener.

### What should I say back to WYD?

Say what you're doing and add a question so the chat can continue, like "just got home, wbu?" If you don't want to talk, a short answer without a question back closes it politely.

### Is it rude to reply nothing to WYD?

Not rude, just a dead end. Adding a detail or asking back shows you want to keep talking.

### What does WYD mean on TikTok?

In TikTok comments it's often the jab or the hypothetical: what are you doing, said to someone doing something odd, or what would you do in the situation shown.

### What's the difference between WYD and HYD?

WYD asks what you're doing. HYD asks how you're doing, which is about your mood and well-being rather than your plans.

### What does WYD mean from a guy late at night?

Often that he wants to talk or meet up right now. Read it alongside how you usually talk, since the same text can be a simple check-in from someone you're close to.
