# Instagram handle checker

Canonical: https://postmesh.app/tools/instagram-handle-checker

Type a username to check it against Instagram’s rules, then open its profile in one click to see whether someone already has it.

## How it works

The checker tests the handle against the username rules Instagram’s app enforces. Whether a handle is taken can only be seen on Instagram itself: this tool does not query Instagram for availability. It opens the profile for manual inspection instead.

Nothing you type is sent to PostMesh.

## Steps

1. Type the username you want.

2. Fix anything the checker flags.

3. Open the profile: a missing profile does not establish availability. Confirm in Instagram’s own username editor.

## Questions

### Why doesn’t it say whether the handle is taken?

This tool validates syntax, not availability. A missing profile may still be reserved or unavailable; confirm in Instagram’s username editor.

### Does a missing profile mean the handle is free?

Usually, but not always: deactivated accounts and recently changed handles can keep a name reserved for a while.
